That whole deal was chump change anyway. Can you believe that in the
last 5 weeks I've been the grand prize winner in four different European
lotteries??!! It's so amazing. The incredible part is that I never even
entered any of them!! I've got something like 35 million euros coming to

(Please don't tell anyone I sent this post. All the lottery people who
contacted me said I should keep my winnings secret until after they
process all of my personal info and my funds get released)

[RCSE] need futaba 9Z 4 servo wing programming help

2005-11-16 Thread Brian Courtice
I'm hoping someone might be able to send me their program setup for a
four servo wing sailplane using the 9Z. My radio is the older, pre-WC
version, and the plane I'm trying to set up is an Opus.

I'm pretty close but I have a couple of problems that are stumping me.
Aileron differential (ADF) only affects the ailerons and not the flaps
that work along with the ailerons. If I use ATV (adjustable travel
volume) to limit the range of the flap motion, I end up with limited
down flap available in butterfly mode.

I need full 140% down flap range with crow (butterfly) deployed for
maximum down flap on landing approach. However I don't need anywhere
near 140% down flap travel when the flaps are working as ailerons.
Unfortunately, limiting the flap range outside of crow programming seems
to have the effect of reducing the available flap range within crow.

Thanks in advance for any help!

[RCSE] D9pin assignments

2005-11-09 Thread Brian Courtice
I just happened to have wired my first ever D9 connector for a four
servo wing earlier today.

Here’s how I did it. “S” equals signal. “O” stands for an unused pin.
Each + and – pin on the bottom row has two wires attached. (Both left
servos on one side, both right servos on the other.) It worked just fine
for me. After I got all the wiring done, I splooged epoxy mixed with
micro balloons around the terminals to seal them and strengthen the
connection.

RE: [RCSE] How to mount a v tail

2005-09-19 Thread Brian Courtice
Try making a block that will sit on top of the v-tail at the root. (Angle
the bottom of the block to match the v-tail angle.) Now you can set a small
bubble level on the block to measure the v-tail incidence. Raise the tail
until the bubble is perfectly centered, and then use a meter to set the wing
incidence.

I’ve never flown a Snipe, but I doubt you’ll need that much positive
incidence. I’d start around 1 degree I think. (Enough to be sure it isn’t
negative.)
My own fast wingerons are set up at 0-0, or very close to it.

RE: [RCSE] Death to RCR

2005-08-24 Thread Brian Courtice
Thirty two years ago, when I was twelve, my older brother brought an
issue of RCM into my parent's home. I have no idea who gave it to him or
why he brought it home, because he never even read it. I, however, read
and re-read that issue until I wore it out. It was another six years
before I could afford to get started in R/C, but in the meantime, I
haunted the newsstands every month, eagerly waiting for the next issue
of RCM to arrive.

After all these years, model airplanes are still the joy of my life.

These days, I get most of my model airplane related news and information
from the internet, and I only buy model aviation magazines on occasion.
Still, for me, it is a sad thing to realize that RCM will be no more. My
RCM magazines were the treasures of my youth, and the source of many of
my hopes and dreams.

Aloha to all. I’ve noticed quite a few organized competitions, meets, and fun
flys over the past several months posted here on RCSE. I’ve “never been” to
the mainland but if I did go, I would want to setup my itinerary to include one
of these R/C competitions, meets, or fun flys. From people’s experience and
unbiased opinions☺, what would be the best organized competitions, meets, or
fun flys have they encountered? I’m also concerned about local accommodations
(hotels, camping sites if I decide to camp out, etc.). I would like to hang
out with the local flyers and see their flying sites also before and after the
organized meet if possible. I would rather go to something that is soaring
related, but I would consider other R/C meets like TOC and R/C shows and
exhibitions just as long it is worthwhile to check out.

Aloha to all on RCSE,

[RCSE] The Gordy rule

2005-07-29 Thread Brian Courtice
Gordy's post about a model hydoplane meets the Gordy rule, which is the
only allowable exception to the "all posts must be soaring related"
rule.

According to the Gordy rule, if a post interests Gordy, it should
interest everyone else too, and therefore does not need to be soaring
related.

Conversely, if a post does not interest Gordy, the post is spam and
should never have been posted. This part of the Gordy rule may be freely
applied to posts that are indeed soaring related.

RE: [RCSE] Math anyone?

2005-04-16 Thread Brian Courtice
It's quite simple. Weight divided by area. (Number of ounces divided by
number of square feet.)

Let's say you have 325 sq in of wing area and your plane weights 28 oz.
There is 144 sq inches in a square foot, so that means you have 2.257 sq
ft of area. (325/144).

Now divide 28 oz by 2.257 and you have your wing loading in oz per
square foot. (12.4 oz/ft).

One thing I’ve learned is that if Gordy
ever finds a post on RCSE that has nothing to do with soaring, we all hear
about it.

The second thing I’ve learned is
that if Gordy thinks it’s interesting, he
thinks everyone else should be interested too. Conversely, if it doesn’t interest

I've read where several folks are using Gast pumps. I went to the Gast
pump web page and I'll be darned if they don't make more than one model
of
pump. In fact they make lots and lots and lots of different types of
pumps.

For those who are using Gast pumps, which model?

Are folks using diaphragm pumps successfully for continuous duty
applications?

Does anyone have a pump they want to part with for a reasonable
price?? Contact me off line on that one.

Thanks,

My own primary soaring interest is slope. The slope forum on R/C Groups
is hands down the best on the net. Lot's of new posts everyday, with
detailed build threads, construction techniques, photos, videos, site
information, etc.

There are more pictures and fresh slope related content posted on R/C
Groups in a few days than there is in all of the combined R/C printed
magazines in a year.

The HLG forum is also very good, as is the composites forum. For those
into electrics, there are also some very nice electric's forums.

It's a terrific resource. It's also been down for two days, and I'm
jonesing!

These gliding ants are very cool, though it would appear that their
glide
ratio is pretty bad. Interesting that a bad glide ratio actually serves
them
pretty well in this case. When they want to get away from a predator, a
quick (efficient) glide back to the tree wouldn't be all that great a
tool,
while a poor (very near falling) glide back to the tree that gets them
further out of harms way, but still with a good shot at returning home,
is
just the ticket. The one in the video looks like about 1:30, (NOT 30:1)
so a
scale-sloper-RC-model-gliding-ant would need to be reserved for those
really
ballistic slope days.

[RCSE] lawyers and kits: Off topic? Not!

2005-02-03 Thread Brian Courtice
Let’s try to explain this so you are no longer so mystified Gordy.

For some of us, our favorite soaring airplanes are scale models of
military and civilian aircraft. If the producers of our favorite slope
soaring airplanes must cease production due to lawsuits over copyrights
and licensing issues, than a large part of our enjoyment of this hobby
(RC Soaring) is directly affected.

Maybe PSS Slope planes have nothing to do with your own soaring
interests Gordy, but they are very important to some of us. Am I a
“spammer” because I am interested in discussing topics that don’t
interest you? Why not be whacky and cease berating those of us who do
not have exactly the same interests as your own.

Once more, your elitist, condescending, and self righteous attitude has
polluted this forum. Why must you constantly attempt to dictate the
content of this exchange? This exchange is ours, not yours!

had it going up even after the motor had faded away... got little Rays

And then uncle Jim hit something he shouldn't have and lost the only

This Condor guy has been all over the internet for the last few days
making multiple posts about AMD products. He claims to have owned,

dozens of posts and every one of them has been wildly supportive of all

His motives are suspect in my own humble opinion.

I have both the Vertus and Discus. Both fly great. I had no issues
with any of the parts, but maybe I got lucky with the batch that I
received.

I got them both for around $200 each, and $45 shipping. I don't know
what happened or what went wrong, but I have no issues.

Also, you might want to point your browser at thier ebay feedback. If
there kits are such, dare I use profanity, CRAP, then why aren't people
making this clear in the least bit via the feedback mechanism. One
could leave feedback along the lines, 'Kit delivered, but it sucks" or
SOMETHING that indicates WARPED WINGS, cracked body, gaps in the wing
tip ... SOMETHING along the lines of what has been
so over reported here. Why don't we see this
feedback from the people who actually BUY the kit?!?

I know why :)

Yes I see one customer complaining about missing parts, and another
complaining about a dead car radion, but I CAN'T for the life of me see
ANY feedback about warped wings, low quality, seperating wing layers
... where please someone show me the light! PLEASE!

Man I seached back serveral months just now, and evern looked at the
auctions for the Vertus and the Discus ... ALL POSITIVE
FEEDBACK!?!?!?!?! WHY I say feedback for over 30 Vertus sales ...
not a single complaint ... what am I missing here?!?

I am looking and not a single serperation layer. Not a single
complaint ... ah I know ... the winning bids are really ALL employees
of AMD. No wonder they have over 2100 positive feeback on thier
products ... NOT! I have thier products and love them.

RE: [RCSE] zipper skin, 1/32 too thick?

2002-12-10 Thread Brian Courtice
I don't think you will have any problem at all with the thicker wing skins.
The wing will be stiff and stronger and may even fly better. The little bit
of extra weight wont hurt, it will just make your plane a little faster.
Most slopers end up flying with extra ballast anyway. The extra airfoil
thickness is pretty negligible too. I doubt you would see a difference in
airfoil performance.

I like to use Dave Brown's Southern Sourgum for sheeting foam cores. It
makes a very strong bond that will never delaminate. I have also used wing
sheeting tape quite a few times. Its kinda like double sided tape, except
there is no film, just the glue. I've never had a delam with sheeting tape
either.

I did try 3m77 once. (Old type.) I noticed the sheeting lifting off the
cores a little around the edges after I took the wing out from under the
weights I used to press on the sheeting. When using weights, and not vacuum,
there tends to be less pressure out at the edge of the wing. Using vacuum,
that probably wont happen. In my case I put a little carpenters glue under
the edges and the wing was fine. I flew that wing for years without a
problem.

Weldwood contact cement works well too. It's a lot like the Sourgum. Brush
it onto the core and the sheeting and let it dry, then attach the wing
sheeting. Very aggressive bond.

Good luck!!

I'm building a Zipper that I purchased from one of our fine members. It
calls for 1/64 ply skin, I have some 1/32 ply. I'm thinking that the
thicker skin will make it more Martin proof... Will the extra weight and
thicker foil make it too much of a hog? Also, will 3M 77 (old version) be
strong enough for the skins if I use a vac/bag?

[RCSE] 2002 F3J WC flyoffs...re: Joe Wurts

2002-08-11 Thread Brian Courtice

I just wanted to put in my two cents and say that I
thought Joe Wurts comments about the WC's showed some real class. Joe
essentially said that he flew his best but came up short, and got narrowly
defeated by a pilot who deserved to win. It would be so easy for someone who has
been a world champion several times, and who was beaten this time by less than a
point, to say that he had been robbed or that he lost only because of some bad
luck. You are still a champ as far as I am concerned Joe!

  flyoffs
  Hi all,
Turned out to be a landing contest today, as the air was pretty good.
Arend Borst flew very well, and is now the deserving F3J world champion.
It came down to a fraction of a second in the end.  Arend finally had
some good luck in the end, as two pilots mid-aired in the fourth round, so it
was reflown.  He got a 1000 point flight in the reflight which secured
his win, by all of 0.7 of a point!  I ended up in second place, and Pasi
Vaisanen of Sweden came in third.
As to the juniors, they had to deal with the really tough air in the early
morning.  Chris Jolly flew very well to get a second place.  Toby
Lammlein (sp?) of Germany placed first, and Thomas Fischer of Germany placed
third.  David McCarthy had some difficulties, as did Paul Griebenow, and
finished 9th and 10th respectively.  The US juniors can hold their heads
high, they flew very well in some difficult conditions in the flyoffs.
There has been some discussions on what rules modifications can be made to
make the event more of a soaring event, and less of landing contest.  Iäm
not sure what can be done to emphasize the soaring aspect more.  The only
thing that I can think of offhand is to possibly deemphasize the importance of
the landings.  Maybe make the landings worth only 10 points as opposed to
100 points.  Also, in the flyoffs, why have a throwout?  The first
round of the flyoffs this time was the only round that showed the thermal
skills of the pilots in the scores, at least for the seniors.  The rest
of the rounds were landing contests.  Unfortunately, I fell short of the
mark this time.  Still, I feel proud to have represented the US, and feel
that I flew the best that I could have.
Thanks for all of the support that the US team has received from
  everyone.

RE: [RCSE] Soaring Sites on Maui?

2001-11-25 Thread Brian Courtice

Aloha!

I live on Maui, and would be happy to hook up with you and show you where to
fly.
There has been little or no wind in the last 10 days, hopefully that will
end before you get here!! There is good lift here probably 300 days out of a
year.

I live in the Lahaina area, and there are a few of us that fly a slope close
to here. It provides awesome lift, but it is a rough and rocky area, so you
will want a good foamie there.

On weekends we go to a much larger slope that is a longer drive. Nice big
grass landing area and monster lift. One of the best slopes on the planet.
ANYTHING will fly there. Glass planes will scream.

There is another group of guys that fly an inland slope that works well for
thermal type planes. Everything from gentle ladies to 1/3 scale glass can be
found flying there. That spot also has a DS groove.

So the answer is that there is a suitible place to fly anything you own and
can get on an airplane!!

You can call me at 1-808-665-0529.
I am home from work usualy by 2:00pm. I am off on Tuesday and Wednesday. I
will look forward to flying with you if you look me up.

[RCSE] NINJA: was Built-up Balsa slope kits?

2001-11-19 Thread Brian Courtice

Years ago, the Sig Ninja was my first ever slope plane. Epp foam had not yet
made the scene.
The plane flew well and looked good, but the fuselage was extremely weak.
Anything less than a perfect landing resulted in structural damage every
time. A couple of years later there was even an article in RCM magazine
about how to build your own fuselage to replace the inadequate one the kit
comes with.

I live in Hawaii, and fly slope in high winds a lot. Most of my planes are
foamies. I do supplement the stock wing spars with a layer of heavy glass
top and bottom, I use lots of filament tape barrel wrapping on the fuse for
extra stiffness, and sometimes I replace the tail parts with wood, again to
stiffen up the plane and reduce drag.

Currently I like the Patton Aircraft planes and the SR Hobbies BD5. They
have a better look and higher performance than the Dave's planes.

Put a little ballast on a well built example of one of these planes, and it
will rock. Huge, huge consecutive loops, multiple rolls at about one and a
half per second roll rate, very respectable speed, and unlimited inverted
flight. Lots of fun, and absolutely no "pucker factor" when landing time
comes.

I also fly original designs with ply sheeted foam wings and heavy duty wood
fuselages, similar in layout and performance to the Slope Scale type planes.
Those planes are definitely faster and retain more energy. They also require
a lot more concentration to fly and can be a handful to land.

If I had to choose between a Ninja and a good foamie, I'd take the foamy. If
your home slope has a lot of wind and you have a lot of confidence in your
piloting skills, try a Slope Scale type built up plane.
Good Luck

Bruce and Keith... you both recommended the SIG Ninja. It looks right along
the lines of what I'm looking for. I live in Oregon and the slope winds
here can be strong a lot of the time. With some extra ballast, how does
this plane handle strong winds? What about in times of light lift? Also,
how durable is it compared to an all EPP ship? Thanks in advance!!

[RCSE] DS Maui?? Uh HUh Uh Huh. :)

2001-05-03 Thread Brian Courtice

The place was Mulahia. The pilot was some guy named Joe something or other.
He's supposedly some big shot; I guess he has won a lot of model airplane
contests. He was kind of a quiet dude. The first I saw him he was preparing
my friend Gerald's very heavy F3b type plane for a flight. He flew it around
for few minutes and then brought it in for a landing. He caught it. It was
Joe's first ever flight on a borrowed airplane at a site he had never flown
before.

A few minutes later Joe launched the airplane again. This time he started
doing this weird circular pattern. Up above the horizon away from the slope,
back around behind the hill, down into the shallow gully, back up into the
wind again. Over and over. Faster and faster. And faster. There is a strand
of trees right behind where he was flying. I mean RIGHT behind. You could
see the shadow of his airplane on the leaves of the trees. He was coming
close. Very close. Gerald's airplane started to make a sound nobody had ever
heard it make before.

We all learned something that day. Some of us have been following the goings
on in this hobby for 20 years or more. This was new. something we have never
seen before.

We may have to find a new place to park our cars now. The DS grove that Joe
Wurts pioneered at Camp Mulahia on the island of Maui a few days ago is
small. There are a bunch of trees at the high side. Big trees. There is
usually a bunch of cars parked at the low side. Big cars. Some of them are
trucks even.

A while later I went down to the coast to fly my Patton Mustang. Joe and Ted
stopped by. Joe flew my airplane for a few minutes. "Thanks," he said, "Nice
airplane, it flies well." I may bronze that airplane and hang it on my shop
wall. Not. It's my best sloper. Well, my best foamie sloper at least. I will
fly it until I pulverize it. In the meantime I think I need something new.
Something that will fly well in that narrow grove at Mulahia...
