[RCSE] Duel Solenoids Save Planes

2005-09-16 Thread Cal Posthuma
I just saw a $1000 bird bite the dust a couple weeks ago. The solenoid
stuck and ripped the plane out of the pilots hand and cart wheeled
toward
the turn around.

Two solenoids are not the full answer though. You will need a device
to
detect a bad solenoid before it will bite you.

I have two sound led boxes in stock ready to send you one. At $35 +
insurance $1.60 it is a small price compared to the plane it saves.
The
sound is real sensitive and will warn you of intermittent solenoids as
well.
The bright LEDs tell you which solenoid.

I take paypal, checks, and MO

Yep, I admit it. I go to the Nats for one reason. I'm there to have fun.
Flying toy gliders at contests is fun, hanging out with my many friends is
fun, drinking the occasional beer is fun. Sitting in a chair while flying
RES at the Nats is fun. Winning trophies is fun too, near as I recall
(it's been a while, but Cheesy Woman says I have enough anyway).

Fun fly? I laugh at the concept.

Intensity? I gave up on being a stress puppy a while back. There have
been times in my life when "intensity" was appropriate, but toy airplane
contests don't seem to be a good reason to get "intense" to me. If you want
intensity join the Army and go to Iraq. If you're lucky they might even
let you play with toy planes, in a very intense and competitive way.

Re: [RCSE] One full day of RES

2005-08-02 Thread Cal Posthuma
Two Meter does not need to drop a day. Nostalgia will die or co-exist with
F3B or HL, probably HL.

Two Meter is very different from RES but both contribute to new aircraft
that provide a starting place for the new fliers.

When I wrote the first rules to start the RES class at the Nats the concept
was to cause new planes to be made for the class so new flyers have choices.
To diminish Two Meter as a result is back stepping.

Dan Pruss award is up to SOAR. If they want to advance RES to competition
level they write the rules. AMA sets Hi Johnson and Lee Renaud awards and
they should remain as they are.

Hi Guys,
I wasn't trying to take a day from 2m, just suggesting we add a full day
of RES. RES is fun, and it is clearly growing in popularity.

It seems to me there might be a way for HLG and NOS to share the day with
frequencies and field space much like we do when F3B runs along side of
X/C, using the same fields.

I like and support the idea about the Dan Pruss award (as a member of the
first SOAR team to ever win it in 2004), but that is a different
discussion independent of getting RES a full day. Lets take that as a
next step if possible, down the road.

This is a great idea and a easy one to implement, drop a day of 2M,
numbers are about the same for 2M and RES, mostly me thinks, because
the guys that come to play for the week bring the requisite toys.

Here's one idea, start AMA TD with one day of 2m, then 2 days of
unlimited, one day of RES and end with a day of NOS. If NOS numbers
are low, the event could wind up earlier in the day to get guys on
their way.

RES has evolved into a fun event with sailplanes that are a blast to
fly, I love my Topaz. A day of RES is a good way for the contest to
wind down. NOS numbers might go up with a full day as some may come
to just fly that event on a Friday.

Mark's idea below to make the Dan Pruss award based on unlimited, 2M
and RES is a good one, and one that I believe would enjoy good support.

What say all of you??

On Aug 1, 2005, at 9:37 PM, Mark Miller wrote:

I'm all for a full day of RES. The way it was
explained to me regarding the reason for keeping 2
days of 2 meter was that it was a "premier" event like
Unlimited and RES was not. I would say that over the
past 4 or 5 years RES had advanced and grown in
popularity around the country. The technology has
advanced to the point where RES designs are winning
unlimited contests these days. 2 meter is declining
around the country and technology and market share is
stagnant or declining.

The number of people flying RES at the NATS is not
what it could be because, in my opinion it is
essentially a half day of flying for a full price
entry. It is also placed badly where folks are trying
to get home after a long week of flying. I feel it is
the class that has actually been growing over the
years nation wide.

The way it can become a "premier" event is by treating
it that way. I would not mind even seeing the Dan
Pruss award be based on the point total for 2 meter,
Unlimited and RES. It is 3 different ways of flying
and would reward the versitility of the team. This
will, in my mind, be as the award was intended which
was based on 3 classes, 2 meter, standard and
unlimited.

Seeing a full day for DLG with 20 entries is kind of
weird.

Also, who would like to see a Hobie Hawk sub class in
Nostalgia? I would love to see a bunch of Hobies
mixing it up. The Isthmus Models Hobie Hawk Challenge.
I'll provide a trophy.

Miami" Mike has oked me to produce kits of his LED and sound system.

I am currently building a prototype of his
design.

I will be using my LED's + his sound
circuit.

If I go into production the prices will like
this:  Sound add on module to existing LED's will be $20 for kit and $30
assembled.  A stand alone LED's and sound system will be $25 for a kit and
$35 for an assembled one.

The finished product is only about 1 1/2 "
by  3".

It can be easily mounted with Velcro.

The sound will alert you immediately and then you
can look at LED's to verify and find out which solenoid has
malfunctioned.

I am not taking orders yet but am asking if you are
interested, email me so I can get a feel for the volume I will
need.

My LED kits are still available on my web

WMSS (formerly the GVRC) has had a Two Meter Championships for over 25
years. This Summer it is on August 20-21 near Grand Rapids Michigan. It
has always been a MON on Man event. It inspired the Nats MOM format. Just
ask Jim Thomas or Mike Stump.

By the way Jim Thomas email me as I lost your email address in a computer

Cool??!?!? Well some do

Les and Craig get my vote on 2M flying. THEY MAKE YOU A
BETTER TD PILOT for the bigger stuff!!! Too bad you don't
see many contest with 2M class these days, just like the
standard class that has come and gone... flying the shorter
wingspan stuff does sharpen your skills, another reason why
I've improved very slightly over the past years. Practice
and Practice is still the key as we all know it but you
should learn to be some what a "Jack of all trades"... is
that the saying???
2M pilots do need more friends! Hey, you don't have to
listen to me, but it would be nice to see more pilots
compete in this class. Okay, what is the 2M to get???
Which ever one you feel comfortable flying and feel it will
give you an edge! There's still many models out there to
fill your needs, I fly an Organic only because it's cool
looking, not because it floats like a feather or penetrates
in windy conditions or because it lands on a dime! I would
never fly a glider that does all that! I fly the ORGANIC
just because of it's looks!!! :-)

But now, our national champ comes out and says 2-meter's
suck?? Ow, oW OW!!!
How many of you got started with a 2-meter? When a new
pilot finally
shows up at our flying field, more often than not they
are flying a
2-meter. They only move on because everyone wants the to
look good by
max'ing every flight (more easily, as skill requirements
to do so with
2-meter are much higher), thus off to open they float.
I find 2-meter great fun! Hot rods of the sky, able to
leap tall buildings
in a single bound (if there's lift). And yea, as I grow
old(er) any my
eyes become a problem and reflexes slow, I'll slowly
leave 2-m behind and
move to a bigger RES (along with open). 2-meter is not
for the faint of
heart. But I'll always have a soft spot for a good,
full-house
work-it-across-the-sky hot rod of a 2-meter. I think
2-m;s provide a much
better test of your flying skills than open or res planes
do. And yea,
they suck when there's no lift! But hey, they provide a
good separation of
the "pilots" from the flyers. It IS easier to fly a
bigger plane. That's
part of what makes it so interesting. I guess you have
to put me into that
die-hard 2-meter camp.
This is all said with the utmost respect to Daryl. No
attack on his
opinion is intended. He is the champ, afterall! But
hey, I (and you)
don't HAVE to agree with him. Hell, here in Washington,
that would imply
I'd have to listen to the guidance of governor Gregoire
... no, make that
governor Rossi ... no, Gregoire ... oops, no make that
Rossi again ...
sigh, now Gregoire ... now HUH? (think I'll move to
Idaho!)
2-meter friends just need more friends! :-)

[RCSE] Sailplane Insurance? I have 16 kits ready for immediate shipping

2005-02-01 Thread Cal Posthuma

If you have been thinking about it, now is the time to
act.

If you are using dual solenoids on your winch now the LED kit
is a must as it will tell you if one is bad.

If you are still using a single solenoid your plane is at
risk in a winch runaway.

You can get another solenoid for 20-30 dollars at NAPA or Ebay.

Kits are $9.95 shipped anywhere in USA.

They include 2 high power LED, 2 holders, 2 resistors, and 3
connectors.  Assembled kits are $19.95.  $1 off for each kit in
orders up to 5 kits.

See the web page:

http://www.altelco.net/~calplsf/solenoid_led.htm

It is finished with pictures and reports from users.

Dealer inquiries invited.

[RCSE] dual solenoid led insurance kits IV

2005-01-02 Thread Cal Posthuma

Demand was so high last time yet that I thought I would make offer one more
time.  I have 3 kits ready to ship and another 10 in parts coming this
week.  If you have or are changing to dual solenoids to keep from having
winch runaways due to stuck solenoids, these kits are a great way to monitor if
either solenoid is locked engaged (means you are really running on one
solenoid)

They are $9.95 shipped anywhere in USA.  I take one dollar off each
kit for every additional kit bought.  Assembled kits ready to bolt on
are $19.95.

They include 2 special bright LED's, 2 LED holders, 2 resistors to
match 12 volts, and 3 solenoid connectors.

[RCSE] 5 sailplane insurance kits left

2004-12-05 Thread Cal Posthuma

I have parts for 5 more kits in the pipeline.  These kits mount
on dual solenoids to let you know if one of the solenoids is bad.  If one
is bad that means at anytime without warning your winch can lock full
on. If the kit is in place the LED will go out when a solenoid is locked
on.  If you are only using one solenoid I can't help you as you are on
borrowed time anyway. I put dual solenoids on my winch after
seeing it take a newbie's riser through the turnaround.  The LED's are
added so I know they are both working.

Kit price $9.95, for extra kits in the same order minus $1 per extra
kit 2-$18.95 3-$27.95 etc.

Assembled Kit is $19.95 ready to bolt on your solenoids with LED's mounted
on wood plate and tested.

Kit includes 2-Flashlight LED's, 2-5mm LED holders, 2-Resistors, 3-lugs to
attach to solenoids, instructions and picture of installation.

Assembled kit also includes hookup wire, heatshrink, and wood mounting
plate.

Only 5 more orders will be taken at this time unless I can make the jump to
15.  I can't afford having bunch of extra parts around and make the kit
price reasonable.

Re: [RCSE] Plane insurance How they work

2004-11-30 Thread Cal Posthuma
It is a pair of red diodes. each has a resistor so it will work on 12 volt
battery. They go across each solenoid. IF solenoids are ok they both are
lit when power is on. If one is stuck closed (bad condition) the its diode
does not light. Therefore the solenoid needs be replaced.

Any more questions feel free to ask.

Does anyone remember the article or can direct me to bright diodes.

Re: [RCSE] Club Newsletter Editors/Webmasters Only

2004-03-23 Thread Cal Posthuma
I have had similar experience and have been doing email Newsletters for 5
years. Whether the member reads them is always a question but hard
quantify. I then did a short stint of web page only but that was obviously
not enough. Have you read the LSF Newsletter lately? I have even suggested
to members to make the web site their home page but that did not seem to
help.

Now I email and do the web page. I am still not sure it is being read.
Newsletters have important information but our lives are busy. A mailed
Newsletter does get opened and read I do believe.

I have asked members did you read the newsletter and some even months after
finally told me they did not have the software to read the download or
didn't know how to do it.

Mailing costs stamps, ink, time, and that is hard to give up easily.

League newsletters seem to be read more. I think the people I send to are
more involved with soaring in the league.

Ray is essentially correct. I do not remember the western club part. I did
incorporate the concept from Ray Hayes original idea with some modification.
It is a good program no matter who takes credit and I sure don't mean this

[RCSE] If you are an AMA CD read this

2002-10-04 Thread Cal Posthuma

You just had $30 removed from your
pocket.

AMA now is only offering 50% dues instead of 100%
for your work as a CD.  This was a unanimous vote by the council.
Check last council minutes on AMA web page.

Problem here is you probably put sanctions in early
this year thinking you would be earning dues for 2003.

This sounds like a breach of contract to
me.

If they want to do this it should apply to
2004.  This is like contracting for a certain wage and when the job is done
reduce wage by 50%.

If you care, send email to your council
member.  Email addresses are on AMA web page.
