[RCSE] Launch technique
It does seem like launch technique is a dying art Time after time no mater what the conditions are, you see most pilots go up the winch, put their foot on the peddle, and and not let off tell they zoom off... They even do this to light weight RES ships. Crazy Crazy Crazy.. All you are doing is sucking in line! And lowering your ultimate launch height. If U tap your plane up the first 1/2 to 3/5 of the launch.. Using the wind (if present) as your friend..Then put your foot into it for the last bit to pick up speed you will get a much higher launch... In the good old days we had no choice but to tap our planes up and fly them like a kite...Sometimes letting out more line than we took in. But the same principles apply today... But with a zoom at the end :-) Down wind launches are a whole other matter :-) If you saw any of my Super Esprit's 200' launches at Visalia you know what I'm talking about :- Craig

[RCSE] Icon2, its all about the wingspan...
Your right Gordy.. Dam I hate saying that :-) LoL. Its all about the wingspan. When I went searching for my first TD plane in over 20 years, I searched the internet for the biggest plane I could find... A German friend mentioned this new plane... Strange, It had a woman's name.. After doing some more searching I discovered the German team was using this funny named plane and doing quite well... I looked and looked for an American distributor and found none so I had my German friend buy one for me and ship it over in a very sturdy plywood box. Cost me a fortune :-) When I showed up at the local field everyone asked what my big V tailed plane was called... Sharon I said :-) Everyone looked puzzled and said they had never heard of it.. But I was afraid to fly the dam thing for over a year... It was just too Perdy. Then I meet Tom Hoops at Visalia the next year and he helped me maiden the dam thing Been flying it ever since without a crash :-) Craig.. PS... So yes I would love an Icon2, but I know my bank account won't :-(

If someone has a winch set up, it takes me longer that that to get from my van to the winch. If Brian Smith is there, he often has my model assembled by the time I get out of the van. :) Chuck Chuck, add the price of the van required to haul the plane, add the price of the winch or at least a histart and the time to lay it out or set it up plus retrieve it and put it away. When I first went to electrics in an all-gas club, one of the things I loved about it was the rest of the guys had to sit there after flights with squirt bottles of soap and baby diapers or paper towels, cleaning all the goo off their planes before they could even put them in the trunk. Me, I'd turn off the TX and RX, pop the wing off, toss them in the trunk of my compact car and head out the gate, whistling. The DLG guys have the same freedom plus more possible (smaller) sites to fly from. DGMW: I like the big planes. I am working on one myself. [RCSE] Aero Tow Sep 16- 17 Nor Cal. First ever All Electric Tugs
Hay all you Aero Towing guys out there :-) Don't forget this next Sunday 9/17 we will be having the first ever All Electric Tug Aero Towing event... For directions to our field see www.svss.org We will be having some practice tows on Saturday after 11am and then a full day of aero-towing on Sunday... Weather should be perfect for this event.. We will have tugs for any size glider, so don't miss your chance to participate in this history breaking event. Any questions please contact Craig Allen 916 519 7368 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[RCSE] Electric Tug info
I have received a lot of request for info on the Tugs we will be using for our event so I am posting to the group. Here is info on two of the tugs that will be at our event. At this time I do not have info on the third one. First off this is not a cheap endeavor. Brian Chan is currently building a 1/4 scale Wilga using a monster motor provided by Steve Nue that will turn a 27 inch prop pulling over 100amps using 12s4p thunder power batteries. It should have no problem pulling up a 30 pound glider at a cost of around $3,500 or so. My Tug is a Hanger 9 1/4 scale Super Cub ARF ( No longer Avalible) that easily pulls up my brothers 20 pound very draggy scale gliders. I'm using an Axi 5330/24 Spinning a 22/12 prop with a Jetti 90 amp controller. Batteries are Thunder Power. I use 3 packs of 3s4p wired in series giving me 8000ma. I do this for several reasons. 1. It is much easier to fit and balance the plane with three packs then one or two. 2. I can easily use the packs in other planes of various sizes so they are not just siting around when we are not aero-towing. But the real advantage is I have 3 Astro Flight chargers, I can charge all three batteries at once at 6 amps. It only takes about an hour to have all three of them ready to go again. So by having two sets of 3 packs... Yep.. 6 batteries total. You can tow all day without interruption with this set up. The only Mods I made to the Super Cub were using the largest Balloon tires I could find and for safety reason I did the following. I cut the counter balance part of the rudder off and fixed it in place to prevent the tow line from snagging. I might of gone a little overboard with the tow line release, I installed a HS-6985 HB digital servo with 172oz of torque on a 2 to1 bell-crank system so in affect I have 344oz of pulling power on the pin. I lost my first tug to what I believe was a receiver battery coming loose while doing some acrobatics. So on my latest one I installed a duel 5 cell flight pack system with separate on-off switches and connections to the receiver, and I don't do acrobatics any more :-) I will be happy to answer any questions you might have. Sincerely Craig

I had heard of that event. The person who recalled it to me (he was certainly there) said that Brian knew the risks a took his chances. Perhaps a club that caters to this niche of our hobby. It could be promoted as an exclusive private club, lacking any accomplished pilots or pristine planes. A re-kitters retreat so to speak. I have heard that some have found that a sharp little tap on the head with a tire iron usually has the desired effect on these individuals. Re: [RCSE] Signal strength switch?
I've actually seen this function on a transmitter. I don't recall whether it was a factory item or the user added it, nor the brand but it was not a modern radio. Maybe Proline or Kraft. Seemed like a good thing to have but it ended up costing the owner an airplane when the button/switch was inadvertently activated and it stayed on, sucking the life from the battery at a great rate. Too much power can be a bad thing too... This was not in the US so spare the FCC stuff... This is an idea I've had myself. A push button Signal Boost function. I like it. But no, I've not heard of it ever being mentioned. Besides it'd be illegal so no licensed tech could do it without risking his license. And I don't know how difficult it'd be to do without risking frying your transmitter. How much power boost would be needed to have a reasonable chance of combating an offending signal? I don't know. Plus, our radio systems are licensed as must accept outside interference. So I don't think even the concept would be agreed upon. Maybe if we turned it into a life safety issue... Bill Swingle RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] 2005 IHLGF June 5 & 6
Hello, As the "Official International Pilot Committee Chairman" of the 2005 IHLGF. I would like to personally invite any and all pilots no matter were you live, to please consider coming to beautiful San Diego Ca. June 5 & 6 to participate in the 12th annual International Hand Launch Glider Festival. Here is your chance to fly with the best pilots in the world.. I will be setting up shade structures with plenty of chairs and refreshments for all that want them. All you have to do is show up with your plane and have a great time. The IHLGF it is the best-run contest period! Even if you come in last like I did my first year, you will have a great time. With the dollar at all time lows against most major currencies a trip to the U.S. is so cheap we are almost giving the country away. I would love to see the New Zealand gang ( Team Z) come out in force again this year and maybe drag a few Australians with them. I challenge you Europeans to come and show us what you got. It would be wonderful to have an international fly off this year. I am willing to help out in anyway I can to entice you come participate in this amazing event. How about some slope soaring at world famous Torrey Pines or DSing at Parker Mountain Maybe a trip to the San Diego Zoo or Sea World.. Bring the whole family and make it a once in the lifetime vacation. If you have any questions or need any help setting up your trip please feel free to contact me. Craig D. RE: [RCSE] Blaster and Other DLG Opinions, XP-4 is the one
Hello Jered, You do not want a moldie DLG, I went through this when I first started hand launch. Just bite the bullet and buy a XP-4 from Denny at Polecat. yes it's a little more money but money well spent. The moldies wing will slowly delaminate at the spar over time and they are always heavier than they say. I just ordered two XP-4 for this next years flying season. I have also had a Taboo and an Oncore both great planes but the XP-4 is cheaper. Just my two cents worth. Craig Allen LSF111Jared <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Thanks for the reply. RE: [RCSE] Glass Work Surfaces Vs. Steel Vs. Softer Material
I like the theory behind a glass work surface: flat, smooth, etc. But I'm having a hard time imagining how I would attempt assembly of, say, a fuselage with triangle stock from nose to tail. Two planes that I've built come to mind: the Sagitta and the Silhouette. The curvature of the first 5 inches of the nose required a substantial number of pins in both the fuselage sides and the triangle stock. How could this be accomplished with weights and/or clamps? -Original Message- From: Andrew E. Mileski [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, February 14, 2003 8:03 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [RCSE] Glass Work Surfaces Vs. Steel Vs. Can > anyone succintly list the advantages of a glass work surface as opposed to > a steel or "pinable" surface? and how the heck do you hold parts in place > on a glass surface? I mostly build woodies. I never pin. I weight things down and use clamps. Old non-leaking flourescent light ballasts make great weights (free - as your building/office maintenance people for burnt ones), as do bags filled with lead shot or sand. My favorite clamps are 3/4" C-clamps with a pefectly smooth clamping surface that doesn't damamge Balsa (other do so check before you buy). If I could find 'em anymore (was Sears) I'd buy 16 more. I also have an assortment of various larger sizes of C and F clamps, and a couple huge bar clamps. I prefer glass since glue doesn't stick, it's easy to clean, you can cut on it, you can cut covering patterns on it, and it is very flat (float glass). -- Andrew E. He lives in (or near) Minden (near Reno), NV. He's a very successful and competitive soaring pilot and been on the US Soaring team several times. Many of your current full scale competition soaring pilots were modelers in the 70's (me included. I just never gave up the models). Gary Ittner is another US Soaring team member who flew R/C sailplanes in the 70's. In fact he showed up at the last Int'l Hand Launch Glider Fest (Poway, CA) just to see what was going on in the R/C world these days. Other R/Cers that you probably know and also fly full scale sailplane competitions are Larry Jolly, Paul Trist, Mike Reagan. We're trying to get Joe Wurts to join the club, but he's under some weird impression that he doesn't have enough time. Daryll Perkins is almost there, too. He recently earned his pilots license, but the plane he flies has a prop on the nose. He sat in my ASW-28 this last summer and I know he's hooked. Where else can you go after winning the worlds 4 times? www.planes-wings-things.com has links to our club (full scale) at California City (near Mojave, CA). If you're in the So Calif area, come out and see what it's all about. The club is great way to get started in full scale soaring. Dues are $50 per month and no hourly charge for the planes. Yeah, you heard right. All the flying you can stand for 50 bucks per month (tows are about $25, but you usually only need one per day in the summer). Our club is unique in that it is geared towards X/C, competition, and even wave soaring in the winter the club fleet includes a Discus). Re: [RCSE] Triathalon
I disagree. I'd like to at least see what would happen if skegs were not allowed. Sure you'd still have guys overflying occasionally, but I don't think you have the carnage some envisage. Guys would learn how to fly an approach, and not having the skeg as a crutch would force better energy management. An overshoot without a skeg is perhaps safer than one with. Limiting the number of people in the landing zone to just those necessary would help also. It's not always possible to do but there's no need to have all the pilots halfway through the time stacked up behind the tapes. Someone mentioned a few weeks ago about pilots not being able to enter landing zone until a certain time before landing (2 min.?), sounds like a good idea if you have the space to do it. Something's not right when you have a crowd of guys watching the landing of a pilot who just launched for his final round of four minutes or so, to see it determine the outcome of the contest. It's a contest alright, but it isn't thermal duration. [RCSE] Stolen stuff
I experienced some losses in Phoenix this weekend, would appreciate it if anybody could maybe let me know if it should happen to turn up for sale somewhere. I'll be checking the more usual places. There was a ton of generic stuff, but among the more unique stuff was a Wind Dancer, an electric LMR 2M sailplane. Three piece wing, pod and boom fuse, transparent red and yellow covering. One of probably only two flying in the country so difficult to hide. Also a JR XP8103 Tx., different in that it's Mode 1, flap/throttle stick is on the right. Requires a visit to a service center/Horizon to be made 'normal' for most US flyers. Seiko stopwatch. Tons of those around but it has my full name and AMA number engraved on the back. I really don't expect to get any of it back but you never know. Any help greatly appreciated. On a lighter note the F5J event that CASL put on in Phoenix this weekend was a blast, I had a great time as did everybody there. MoM format is where it's at. Thanks, Craig. PS. [RCSE] IHLGF thoughts
Having decompressed after a great weekend here's a few of my thoughts on being part of the IHLGF experience. Nothing like going back to work to bring you back to earth. Firstly congrats to Joe for the win, I think that makes five straight and seven overall. To watch Joe fly hand launch is something else, he's almost superhuman and was unquestionably the best pilot on the field all weekend. When he's carrying a perfect 9,000 plus a 987 throwout into the finals you know it's going to take something out of the ordinary to stop him winning. It was all I could do to snag a few points from him in the first flyoff heat and stop a perfect 12,000 point win. Thanks also to the TPG crew who did an excellent job. The impound crew ran a tight ship and kept things moving well. The variety of models was interesting. The top ten shows a broader range of types than last year, and mostly flaperon or flapped airplanes. Weights have gone up if anything, my models weigh between 10.5 and 11.5 ounces, I believe this to be typical for four and six servo airplanes now. Certainly the weight is no disadvantage and many people carried ballast on top of this. There was a large number of built up poly DLG's, mainly Photons and on the whole they were impressive. They seem to be plenty strong enough to handle big launches though by their nature lose a little to a straight wing airplane. On the whole pilot skill seems to have noticeably inproved, I only have last year to judge this from but in every heat there were several people to look out for. I have to say a huge thanks to Denny Maize at Polecat Aero who got me a couple of great airplanes to fly, also to Mark Drela and Phil Barnes who had no small part in their creation. And of course to my Team Polecat partner Bruce Davidson (reigning National Champ for those that don't know. :-), for great timing and calling throughout the weekend. Because Bruce made the flyoff also I asked Tim Cone to call for me in the finals and he did a superb job, thanks a million Tim. Looking forward to next year, CG. Re: [RCSE] Re: 8103 landing mode
I'm an in-flight switch flipper (camber, rudder mix on/off, reflex) and have not had a problem. One can learn to remember, enabling landing mode and confirming rudder mix on is part of my check at the abeam point of my approach. Re: [RCSE] Frequency Control / safety
Al, I wasn't aware that 50MHz at least was exclusive. I could be wrong but understood that ham operators stay clear of it by understanding rather than legal requirement. It's a small detail and your point stands, it is considerably safer in basically all environments. [RCSE] Hades Parts?
I'm looking for Hades parts. I have one in flying condition, but getting replacement parts quickly is a big challenge - if not impossible. I really don't care about color, just condition. Re: [RCSE] IHLGF results, Curious
Chris, Your comments are valid though on the two occasions I saw people launch before the buzzer, they both took the penalty as individuals and the group flew on. Both realized the error immediately and came down as quickly as possible for a relaunch, losing perhaps ten seconds. Notable pilots too, Phil Barnes and Paul Anderson being the offenders I witnessed. In Phil's case Dave Condon (CD) came out to verify that the release was early. No one ever mentions the real story, just the interesting things. No one mentioned that Yes, the person hit by a plane was during launch. It was a timer that got hit. No one mentioned that pilots walked in front of you while you were launching and you had to scamble to avoid hitting them, or yell at them to stop walking so you could launch. No one mentioned that timing errors occurred and separate timers are needed. No one mentioned that when people launched before the buzzer, they brought the whole group down when they stated in the rules that the pilots had to come down and relaunch as individuals, JUST like sailboat racing, and restart without the window restarting. Yes, a great contest, just the new launches are creating new issues which have to be resolved. I agree with John Erickson, a VERY good contest. In all, the contest is NOW a landing and groundtime contest rather than all flying. NOW the flying is becoming more a qualifier, much like the the TD contests. BTW, If you don't throw to 100' plus, you are sacraficing alot. Thermals, Chris Adams RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] right turns?Left turns?
As a right handed mode 1 flyer a left turn is what occurs most naturally though I have no difficulty thermaling in either direction. Enough brain power is comsumed trying to stay in the thermal that little natural instinct remains, this may or may not be the secret to those missed times Craig. - Original Message - From: Mark Wales To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2001 4:48 AM Subject: Fwd: [RCSE] right turns?Left turns? That's a hard one... I'm right handed, play guitar and shout rifles left handed. I also prefer left handed turns over right ones. Maybe its just easier for us as humans and RCers to push the stick than pull it. Wonder what the MODE 1 flyers prefer? Re: [RCSE] Dive Brakes!!!.are they Spoilers??
There's nothing to say that dive brakes are required to have two 'doors' Charlie. Many aircraft had them on the lower surface of the wing only, located well aft and sometimes perforated. Others have them on either side of the aft fuselage. I don't see why a dual surface spoiler should be a disqualifying item on an RES ship. As long as they are of reaosnable size and not located on the trailing edge it would pose no great advantage other than to reduce or eliminate the usual elevator compensation. Re: [RCSE] Gas Powered Winches?
A small gas-powered generator couldn't deliver the 400+ amps (even more stalled) that winch motors pull, and a 12v generator large enough to deliver the current would weigh more than a deep-cycle battery. I do recall seeing plans in one of the model mags for a gas engine powered winch. I've never seen one in the field, though, and suspect most glider guiders would not like its noise contribution, nor its operational quirks. An optimum solution for many is to mount winch, retriever, and batteries on a small 4x4 ft. utility trailer. Good luck with the knee. - Craig Logan --- "David A. [RCSE] V-tail realignment
I would like to know of the techniques used to realign a v-tail with symetric foils after a fuse break This would be a quality break with pieces missing so that the fuse does'nt index completely. Mike: The best thing I never did with my Skeeter was to expect it to be a good HLG. Instead, I built a slightly fatter fuse, stuck a Dymond Max48 motor and 6 SCR1000 cells in it and fly it as a power plane. It's a lousy glider but a fun power plane that I use as my "travel plane". It does OK rolls on rudder, and a beautiful snap roll/tumble thing. 10 minute flights at full power, too. _ Craig Logan = Craig Logan KF4LKR [EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED] Coffee Airfoilers - Tullahoma, Tennessee __ Do You Yahoo!? [RCSE] NorCal Slope Soaring Update
Getting the flu has motivated me to do a fairly comprehesive update to the site. Three new projects; a "Bullet Proof ie. Hewett Proof" Rodent, a four servo tail-less wing (this time I've overcome the elevator stall), and "Circle Jerk" - a DS project in the works. DS is #$%?ing addicting. I've also added follow-ups to previous projects, more DS observations learned from the Parker Mtn locals and even updated the "contact" e-mail incase you would like to get more info on suppliers of kits, materials, CNC cores etc. If you have a link, events/dates or some photos that you think would enhance the site and inform others ...send them along. Foamies and RES need not apply (I'm with ya on that one Randy). If you need detailed info on any of the material on the site drop me a line. I think you'll find the information if not amusing (its a sickness I tell ya).
