Whew, I'm so glad you guys weren't around in the 60s when I was flying 400 sq. in. pylon & pattern with Orions & Taurus's. We used reeds, by pulsing spring loaded switches with our thumbs, Bonner servos were about 22 inoz of torque, and about 4" long. Elevator trim was the only trim, a 4th servo slid the elevator servo arm forward and back for trim. My point is, when Pro Line & Kraft came out with proportional radios, everyone said it was unfair to just move a stick, and the surface moved an equivalent amount, and trim was on all channels and no extra servo. People tried to kill propo for competition, but lucky for us, they didn't. That was a huge jump in technology. I laid away a Pro Line two stick right away ($650.00), and I made $500.00 per month with a wife & two kids to feed. If the screamers would have prevailed, we would not have any of this. I'm 68 now, and I mostly fly relaxed woody events , because of arguments like this. I have two JR 9303s 40 or 50 planes, and two Pics, plus lots of OFBs. So there. Jim's is the "American Way". If it meets the rules, use it all. If it doesn't, then don't ! I like to fly in Woody events. There are rules for the sailplane construction, and for the TD tasks. I fly within the rules, and feel I can use anything I come up with for an advantage if it meets with the rules. I design & build my own plane combinations to be within the "rules" . Ray Hayes & others allow the pic, so if I CHOOSE to use it, I can. Jim B. fly's the other end of the TD spectrum, in that he CHOOSES to fly big molded planes, but he is still flying & building within the rules set up for the contests he goes to. Less is Best, when it comes to rules. I can afford Icons & Supras too, but I CHOOSE to build & fly the woody's, not against the molded planes, but within their own set of specifications, against other woody's, and occasionally against the molded TD planes, the woody's just don't win in a mid-air with a moldie Bill G.. Even if they are allowed, as they usually are these days, I may or may not use one. Sometimes I like the quiet, sometimes I like to hear the chirp I became so accustomed to in full size sailplanes . Nice to hear the "up" beep when you are 500' high over unfriendly terrain flying XC in a full size. :-) Most of the time I don't turn on the receiver on a pic, if it's in my model, until I find good lift, then I check altitude, climb, & battery mostly. We seem to have two types of sailplane fliers. Those who only want to fly MOM and those who want nothing to do with contests. How about a contest somewhere in between MOM and fun flying. Used to be a lot of them but not any more. :-(Chuck Anderson Chuck, I have to agree. Lots of us have gone to flying "woody" events with competition on a lighter side, putting the fun back into contests. We draw flyers from 500+ miles away, and those flyers won't drive across town to fly MOM. Those of us who still have some molded planes, only fly them on the slopes. It has put the fun back into flying for a bunch of us. Ray Hayes holds the Woodcrafters at Muncie each year, and the 60-70 flyers who go there have nothing but fun, along with competition plus scale,on a different lighter format based on a good time. We are slowly pulling the non-competition fun flyers out to fly with us at our events. More and more clubs are turning to more relaxed types of event formats. At most of our local events, for $5 during the events, we let you fly off our winches with us, and help/teach you to use them, while the rest are "competing" . Our PA gang, typically drives over PA, and to MD,VA, WV, OH, IN, MI, to fly these events, and it's well worth it. Bill G. Bill GrenobleLSF 7558 IVHawksnest SoaringShermans Dale, PA

[RCSE] ARF problems
After hearing about all the ARF BOT planes breaking on the winch, I have also heard about the AVA RES planes at the nats breaking on the launch. Today at a contest, I watched first hand, a brand new AVA, first launch ever, blow the tips off on a mild launch, and mild zoom, by an experienced flyer. The wing tips failed at the factory built outer joint, where there is a tiny short joiner, (not robust like the BOT :-) splitting the wood and carbon out. I am so glad I saved my $700.00 I was going to spend on one, until they are fixed correctly. At least with the BOT ARF, the cost is $135.00 with discount certificate. The AVA evidently has a problem too. The structure where the tips are factory attached is way too weak. IMHO (and others) . Bill G. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. The bikes were pretty much available to dealers, but back up parts were not available for quite a while. With the antenna collapsed, I was getting only ten feet of glitch-free range, not a real confidence builder. >> Tom, after reading your bad report on the JR 610R at the IHLGF last week, you have confirmed my findings, that this receiver is not safe to use in a crowd. Alone on my own field, I get glitches and don't have the range of my regular Hitec receivers, but they are usable. At a contest, or flying with ANY other transmitter turned on, (not on my channel :-)they will at some time or other, even at less than 100' range, violently glitch and send the plane into the ground, as experienced on three of my HLGs at the two day BASS contest. On electric's, I found they won't tolerate the electrical noise very well. I know there are some who swear by them, I swear AT them. This morning I called JR Service to see what had been done in the last five weeks since I first contacted them, and quit using the receivers. They never called me back, nor did they keep my name or phone number on file after my complaint. I was politely told that after JR Service checked the receivers out, they HAVE no problem with the 610 receiver. I then told them that a bunch would be coming back from all of us for a refund, and they could use them themselves since they see no problem. In all my years of loyalty defending JR (12 years), I have never been told to go away, you have no problem. That's it !! My four 610 receivers are going back for a refund. The Feather receivers are OK for slow fly electric, but for HLG and anything that ranges out, I would stick with the Hitec 555, they are bulletproof.
