I've noticed that the Europeans seem to prefer the V tails but the
Americans seem to prefer the plus tails for thermal duration. Why the
difference?

Hi all,

Does anyone have a DAT, COR, PRO, or KOO file of the SD7036 section?
I'm getting a little frustrated trying to find it on the web.

Even a list of co-ordinates would be fine if that's all I can get.

Thanks for the bandwidth

Dan,

Here is the .dat file you need (attached).

The reason you are having trouble finding it is that it is an SA foil, and
not an SD foil.

2005-08-02 Thread Justin Ammon
I know I won't drive 2000 miles for a funfly at the National Flying Site. A
week long set of real soaring contests, you bet!

The Fall Fest...Hmm what can I say about the task for this year without
getting flamed??? Likely nothing, so I'll get dressed in several layers of
asbestos undies reinforced with multi-layered Kevlar and prepare.

Currently open to one class...Ok, not much new here (fingers and toes
crossed for a second class option later this month, must fly 2M too)...Only
37 minutes of task time over 2 days (7 rounds)...Bummer!

Oh well. Entries been sent anyway.

In the majority of flying clubs in our area, only a very few are seriously
interested in competition. Out of 20 club members, last year, I was the
only one who showed up for our ESL contest on the second day. Lancaster
has the same problem. I would venture to say, if there was a National Fun
Fly for a week, there might be a good turn out. It doesn't even have to
be on the same schedule as the NATS.

Now there is an idea, basically what I was getting at, contests and fun
every year. De-emphasize the contest aspect as the die hards know who
they are, and will always show up, we need to attract the rest, the guys
who don't always come, who care less about rigorous competition, who
will support the National Flying site with their presence if it is
relevant to their interests, not the minority of top level competition
pilots.

Would probably be the end of NOS. Just not that many flying it. It

won't

be long and NOS will be 30 year old planes. It is so limited. If

they

set
the category for 20 year old planes (more like it was when it

started), it

would open up the field for more fliers.

I would come an extra couple days early if they had XC and Scale every
year.
It doesn't even have to be a contest, just two days set aside at the
beginning of the schedule.

Edgar is 100% correct!

To drop a day of 2M would be a REAL SHAME! I Love my 2M's (I just hate
V-tails)
RES...I could take it or leave it...But a National Champ title after only ~4
rounds is a bit pathetic. Add a 2nd day into the schedule for RES, but
don't drop the 2nd largest group of Nats contestants down to a single day.

Soaring is about the challenge...It just so happens that this soaring
challenge should be about how to get an additional day in the schedule for
RES, and not about how to punish those that fly 2M just because a few very
vocal individuals do not like the 2M class.

Thank you...And now back to your regularly scheduled useless drivel...I have
scheming and treachery currently on the boards for next years 2M, Unlimited,
F3B, XC and HL (and yes, even a boring RES ship that ain't your granddads
Ava...yawn).

Guys-guys;

Drop one day of 2M for a full day of RES, come on... I have
more money invested in 2M to let one day of flying go. We
all need our fix to fly our toys and meet up with our
soaring friends, right!?!?! Hey, simple solution... take a
vote as to what order each class should be flown on what
days and make every class fly 2-days! I attended the NATS
to fly a full week and get my soaring fix!

It's just a matter of putting our heads together to make
this work, we have a bunch of 2-day contest through out the
year for one type of class, why not make it work so we can
have 2-Days of flying for each class, sure maybe the HLG
guys don't have the number of pilots as other classes do to
justify such a thing, but they love their planes and they
want to fly as much as possible as well with pilots from
all over the country to complete against. Let's work out
the details for next year, plenty of time to work out the
logistics and the Muncie field is too awesome to just fly
Soaring for 1 week, hell... make it a Month of Soaring!
People will attend what classes they want and that's that.

To fly a few rounds and then to be called a "National
Champ" does not seem right, sure we can sit behind our
computers back home and come up with ideas to drop a day
here to add a day there for this class over that class...
drop nothing, add more days. I know it might become a
thing about getting enough people to volunteer to help run
the contest... We have enough retired to and we can all
pitch in to help out, it's like that back home are our home
fields, right!

LET'S JUST GET OUT AND SOAR!! Looking forward to next
year!

my 2 cents,

Edgar

I had no idea what I was doing and simply glued the wing halves together.

Lynn,
The RF module is exactly that...The RF portion of the system. If the xtal
module is being replaced with a synth module, and is compliant with the FCC
regs, than there is no problem... That is assuming that the JR module is
used with a JR tx. The same goes for the Hitec module. It is only to be
used with Hitec transmitters. The same goes for all brands. I think the
problems that existed in the past, were those related to unapproved (read
modified or off brand) modules being used in transmitters.

Re: [RCSE] Continuous Loop Winch?

2005-03-22 Thread Justin Ammon
I guess the first problems that come to mind are:
-The tow lines getting tangled in the turnaround and the winch each time it
passes those points.
-Fixing line breaks...The length of the line is critical. I guess a strap
of some kind could be used from winch to turnaround and back that is far
stronger than the tow line. I don't know, just a thought.
-Line drag??? Is it an issue? Could guide rings be placed along the length
of the returning line to keep it off the ground?
I don't know. I may be w off base.

Just my first thoughts.

Has anyone here ever heard of a continuous loop sailplane winch? The setup
would look something like this:
http://www.vvsss.com/ezone/clwinch.gif
Continuous loops are used with dog lure machines, which are virtually
identical to sailplane winches, and pulleys made for the purpose are
available from Injoy.
(See "S/S Continuous Loop Wheel" at http://www.injoy-1.com/catal_1.htm )
This is an obvious idea and it seems certain that someone must have tried
it,
but so far I haven't found anything on the web.

Subject: [RCSE] Funny RC Blimp story

This appeared on another list I belong to and was completely off-topic
there. However, I think it fits nicely here.

If you ever needed to hurt yourself laughing, this is for you:
Last week while travelling I stopped at a Zany Brainy store and saw
that they had a blimp for sale. It's called Airship Earth, and it's a
great big balloon with a map of the Earth on it, and two propellors
hanging from the bottom. You blow up the balloon with helium put
batteries in it, and you have a radio controll indoor blimp.
I'd seen these things for sale in Sharper Image catalogs for $60-$75.
At Zany Brainy it was on clearance for $15. What a deal!
Last night my wife was playing tennis and it was just my daughter and
I at home. I bought a small helium tank from a party store, and last
night we put the blimp together.
Let me tell you, it's quite a blimp. It's huge. The balloon has like
a 3 ft diameter.
We blew it up with the tank attacched the gondola with the
propellors, and put in batteries.
Then we balanced the blimp for neutral bouyancy with this putty that
came with it, so it hangs in the air by itself neither rising nor
falling.
It was easy and fun, and then I blew up another balloon and made
Mickey Mouse helium voices for my daughter.
My three year old girl loved it. We flew the blimp all over the
house, terrorized the dog, attacked the fish tank, and the controls
were so easy my daughter could fly.
Let's face it, blimps are fun.
Alas, the fun had to end and my daughter had to go to sleep. I left
the blimp floating in my office downstairs, my wife came home, and we
went to bed, and slept the sleep of the righteous.
At this point it is important to know that my house has central
heating. I have it configured to blow hot air out on the ground floor
and take it in at the second floor to take advantage of the fact that
heat rises.
The blimp which was up until this moment a fun toy here embarked on a
career of evil. Using the artificial convection of my central
heating, the blimp stealthily departed my office. It moved silently
through the living and drifted to the staircase. Gliding wraithlike
over the staircase it then entered the bedroom where my wife and I
lay sleeping peacefully.
Running silently, and gliding six feet or so above the ground on
invisible and tiny air currects it approached the bed.
In spite of it's noiseless passage, or perhaps because of it, I
awoke. That doesn't really say it properly. Let me try again.
I awoke, the way you awake at 2:00 AM when your sleeping senses
suddenly tell you without reason that the forces of evil on
converging on you.
That still doesn't do it. Let me try one more time.
I awoke the way you awake when you suddenly know that there is a
large levitating sinister presence hovering towards you with menacing
intent through the maligant darkness.
Now sometimes I do wake up in the middle of the night thinking that
there are large sinister and menacing things floating out of the
darkness to do me and mine evil. Usually I open my eyes, look and
listen carefully, decide it was a false alarm, and go back to sleep.
So, the fact that I awoke in such a manner was not all that unusual.
On this occasion I awoke to the sense that there was a large menacing
presence approaching me silently out of the gloom, so I opened my
eyes, and there it was! A LARGE SILENT MENACING PRESENCE WAS
APPROACHING ME OUT OF THE GLOOM, AND IT COULD FLY!!!
Somewhere in the control room of my mind a fat little dwarf in a
security outfit was paging through a Penthouse while smoking a cigar
with his feet up on the table, watching the security monitors of my
brain with his peripheral vision. Suddenly he saw the LARGE SILENT
SINSITER MENACING FLOATING PRESENCE coming at me, and he pulled every
panic switch and hit every alarm that my body has. A full decade's
allotment of adrenaline was dumped into my bloodstream all at once.
My metabolism went from "restful sleep mode" to HOLY [censored]!
FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE OR DIE mode" in a nanosecond. My heart went
from twenty something beats per minute to about 240 even faster.
I always knew this was going to happen. I always knew that skepticism
and science were mere psychological decorations and vanities. Deep in
our alligator brains we all know that the world is just chock full of
evil and monsters and sinister forces aligned against us, and it is
only a matter of time until they show up. Evolution know this, too.
It knows what to do when the silent terror comes at you from out of
the dark.

Re: [RCSE] 2 meter and how it fits

What Mike said!!!
My new custom 2M is on the board.
I love my Open Class ships, but I really enjoy the challenge of 2M. A high
placing finish with a 2M means much more to me than the same finish with an
open class ship. I'll keep both spans and be very happy flying both (and
RES too).

After lurking and reading the many comments re 2 meter at the NATS I
figured it was time to submit my dime's worth..

Let's first look at how 2 meter differs from the only other TD class
(unlimited).. Because there really are just 2 true model classes for
soaring for the major TD classes at the NATS (based on wing-span of
course)... Again, these are based on wing-span, just like our full-scale
counterparts...

With the span limited to 2-meters as compared to unlimited planes we're
working with the following span-based performance limitations

less aspect ratio, limited visual profile at a distance, shorter glide
ratio, & generally higher wing loadings.

This creates an entirely different flying environment and potential
strategy for dealing with a given task. As I've read from a couple
contributors, the limitation of size makes the 2 meter a bit more
difficult to achieve a given task at times. This is something that makes 2
meter unique as compared to unl. span planes, whether full-house or
limited function (the RES class)...

One of the tenets laid out by Dan Pruss was that a soaring champion should
show abilities in multiple disciplines and various aspects of Soaring..
Within the practical realm of the Soaring NATS in which we deal, 2 Meter
is the other discipline.. There is no other.

If you take a look at our recent NATS Champs, the Dan Pruss Award has
required excellence in both disciplines.. This should not change..

There have been other numerous comments referring to 2 meter as an entry
level class. While it's true that many of us started with 2 meter planes
like the Gentle Lady, in fact they were RES planes. At the NATS level, the
competitive end of 2 meter can't be viewed as such.

The entry level category (and throw-back class) is RES. It was before it
became a rule-book category.

Those that were involved in the early years of the present NATS structure
might remember that we added RES/NOS at the end of the NATS week as sort
of a laid back way to finish the week, replacing Sportsman's F3B (which
occasionally was anything but). It was an easy day of relaxed competition
before we all went home.

If we want more RES rounds, maybe we should fly just RES on the last day.
There is a fair amount of cross-over/redundancy on RES/NOS day anyway.
Maybe another event (like one of the "Woody Majors") could host a
Nostalgia Championship for those so inclined.

Justin, why don't you attend and see if you have the same opinion. Anyone
that wins at Nats is the Champion, there is always representative skills
and talent there. It's a very challenging set of contests over the week.

So I encourage you and others to attend, you will have fun, you will meet
and fly with some very special people day after day. You will learn, and
you will be challenged, and get to fly on the AMA grounds, very nice.

It really is a good time, it wears me out and rejuvenates me
simultaneously. 8-)

Edgar,
I agree with you. More major soaring events are needed.
As I understand it, Sacramento is interested in becoming the 3rd leg of the
triad. I think this is a valid way to keep it going. I would also like to
be able to attend a soaring championship. We do have the Nat's, but the
numbers seem to be a little low on turnout to really call it a championship.
Maybe some encouragement to attend the Nat's could make it the event it's

How about restructuring some sort of TD Championship that
might involve flying in different States, East Coast,

Well, since I did not place in the wood it really doesn't matter, but I
flew a 2M Sagitta 600 (24 year old woody) in RES to a 6th place finish.
Should have entered it in 2M for first place, but I thought it would be fun to
fly in the larger class.  It was nice to be battling in the top 2-3 in RES
with this wonderful, if not classic, ship and still be competitive.  In
typical Justin (JustOn) form I blew the last RES round to take a drop of 4-5
places.  No one to blame but myself.

Just thought I'd give myself a pat on the back.

would never have stayed to work that area of lift, but when Gordy kicked me
in the foot repeatedly for attempting to bug out, I figured I had little to
loose. I got my time.

PS. Bill... You are welcome to slap me around, and even time for me. Just
don't kick me in the foot (it still hurts).

Just so I am straight here, Gordy was kicking and shaking you during your
flight and you STILL defend him??
Man, I don't know what to say!!.
I'd be happy to time for you this weekend. I'll even slap you around a bit
if that will get you to say nice things about me!!

Larry,
Yes, it is an HM Genie. It has seen more than its share of contests over
its years, and is being retired to sport/rough-field/landing practice after
Visalia. It will be replaced with a new HM Genie-Pro shortly.

My current Genie is not 100% stock with a balsa over foam wing (yes, it
takes a full pedal launch), a composite fuselage, and a very modified
vertical tail. It is not a looker at the moment. I count a minimum of 8
different colors of covering on the wings alone.

Guys,
All of the Gordy bashing is getting quite old...
If you don't like Gordy that's fine, but running a campaign to demean and
discredit him like a presidential race (and Gordy is the opposing party)
is
not serving anyone's best interest. I can understand some jabs at each
other from time to time, but the harsh and sometimes downright vitriolic
attitudes are truly uncalled for. Lets try to be a little higher quality
citizen and get ourselves out of the trenches.

Actually Darwin... I do know Gordy. I had the pleasure of having him time
for me on my very last round of 2M on day one of Visalia last year.
Although I did get kicked, and shaken during the flight, he did help me to
get my time when I thought the lift had abandoned me and my Saggita 600. I
do understand that it is somewhat of a sport to take shots at Gordy, but
some of the comments are really a little over the top.

Common Justin, you just haven't met Gordy yet. I'll personally introduce
you
to him at Visalia. Then, you will be on the bashing wagon too. Gordy is
bashed because everybody LIKES Gordy.

Gordy wouldn't be abused nearly as much if Karlton and Sal were still
active
on the list. Until someone else steps forward through a conspicuous lack
of
sophistication Gordy is just gonna have to be it.

Gordy is the Icon, the downwind turn, the Skeeter, the skeg and contest
landings of soaring. Each is controversial, as is Gordy. Doesn't mean he
isn't a nice guy, just means it is our RCSE responsibility to keep him on
his toes!!!

Re: [RCSE] ICON musing

Nope, can't see beating an ICON because it had a handicap imposed as being
any fun!
Same rules for all so no one can claim 'But I would have won if...'
My Genie finds the taste of a handicapped ICON to be less than pleasing.

I loved the video! What a sweet sloper!

I guess I jump in with a little plug for one on the kits on my site.
Viewing it you will see a chain link fence and steel poles that lose or at
least come up in a full-fledged stalemate with the PCW!!!
Keep in mind that the plane in the video is electric, but makes a GREAT
Sloper too.

18+Mb video:

or a less than half length video at 7+Mb:
