Here's something to consider when "migrating" to a replacement for RCSE.
One of the strengths of RCSE was that we all used our real names, not
cutesy-poo nam de plumes. Let's continue that practice in what ever forum

Bill,
Sounds Great! Are We allowed to modify the Skeeter? :-) LJ

I think it is abundantly clear the path that is needed to be taken in
soaring to restore it to all its glory. Yes, I am talking about the
complete prohibition of all but one aircraft from soaring competition.

The one and only aircraft that shall be used is the venerable Skeeter,
and it MUST be built by the pilot. This will restore the need for
building skills and also positively determine who the best pilot is.
Anyone who can keep a Skeeter aloft from more than a few minutes truly
is a a soaring God!!

So there it is, the salvation of soaring is the Skeeter. Who'd a thunk it??

[RCSE] Another reason not to Fly 2.4 GHz

2008-08-01 Thread LJolly
I am sure this is just one of those things that can happen when New
technologies are quickly accepted and infrastructure has just not reacted
quickly
enough to keep pace. What I am speaking about is the lack of accommodation to
Spread Spectrum contestants and their timers at Soaring Competitions. As I am
sure you know back in the old 72 MHz days if you wanted to have your own
caller timer at a contest you just entered on the same frequency so that you
would
be available to help each other. This was the method in particular used at
the Nats and the Masters. Because of the lack of identification of a unique SS
frequency the SS guys are just piled in to the Matrix. This has caused some
major headaches at the Nats where contestants have been held up waiting for
Timers. My suggestion to those clubs that are having Contests with called
flight order is to accept SS entries and either ask for team affiliation or
Timer, Helper particulars. I am thinking you could identify SS flight groups
as
say SS1 SS2 SS3 and use the same 3-4 contetstants as is now offered to 72
MHz
contestants. I believe that this will be fairer and help the contest run
smoother. Larry

Re: [RCSE] f3j multiplex cup

2008-07-08 Thread LJolly

Just got back from 3 weeks in Turkey and have a lot of good memories from
the F3J Worlds.
The Multiplex Cup was the brain storm of Philip Kolb and Murat Esibatir
while at Nuremberg last spring. The top 7 seniors and 3 Juniors as of Thursday
afternoon were given prebuilt EZ Gliders and sent off for an hours trimming
with the competitors own transmitter. There is a very popular 2meter in class
flown in Turkey that uses hi-starts for launching. This contest was modeled
after that category. With this type of equipment I am guessing a good launch
will get you 250 feet, about 3 minutes height for a 2 meter, less with an EZ
Glider. This proved to be an extremely popular spectator event and appeared to
be great fun for the flyers. Dave was way off the field in the second flight,
just a speck and managed to get home. Poor Cody learned you have to turn the
radio on :-) This type of event will prove to be a popular addition at
future large events where manufacturers will be given the opportunity to show
case
their products. Kudos to Philip and the Turkish Organizers for having the
for site to offer this kind of promotion during the contest. And a big Hand to
Multiplex for supplying the Gliders! Best Regards Larry

Re: [RCSE] WAG contest.. The real Story :-)

2008-06-14 Thread LJolly

Craig,
At the risk of getting to mushy over the Stahl man here. I mean he has
taken some interesting positions over the years. But, he is also a very good
timer caller. Yea it is amazing how much more Gordy knows now that I have
spent
some time getting to know him. LJ

Gordy only told part of the Story

I talked Gordy into flying in the WAG contest the Friday before the IHLGF...
I brought 3 planes with me, so I figured what's the worst that could
happen...He could destroy one of my backups... No big deal :-) Well on the
way to
the field my brakes failed and I had to take a turn really fast... Like a
40mph U turn :-) Well that shifted everything in the van and broke my #2
planes
boom... So now I'm down to 2 planes. Still no big deal if Gordy destroys one..
Right... So I show up at the field and Gordy is itching to fly..

I pull out the plane check that everything works and give it a toss..
Straight up.. No control.. Straight down.. Well kind of... Through the
telephone
lines and into Bruce Davidson's rental car... Someone was on my frequency!!!
:-(((

So now I'm down to ONE plane If U have ever flown in the IHLGF its
almost impossible to go all weekend with just one plane... Shit happens :-
hehe

So now I'm like... Crap.. But oh well who cares? Not me :-)

I gave Gordy my word and that's more important to me... So I hand Gordy my
ONLY plane and let him go at it... For not being " A Hand-launch Guy" he had a
decent launch.. He flies the crap out of it.. Like he's been flying it for
years... He even new how to handle a Futaba 9C transmitter...H???

In the back of my mind I'm figuring something is going to happen..

Well it did..

Gordy using a plane he had only 20-30 min of flying time on kicked some
serious ass... He was 5th going into the fly-offs...The only reason he didn't
do
well in the fly-offs was the weather conditions really deteriorated, the sun
was almost down, and lift was non-existent.. It became a who can launch the
highest and cover contest...

How did I do with the very same plane? Not so good... All these years I
thought I lived in the State of California.. But now I realize I live in the
State of Denial!!!

My flying sucks :-))

I know some of you who have never meet Gordy probably think he really lives
is in his mothers basement or a Mental Institution making up stories on the
Internet about flying all over the world... Well as much as I hate to say
it... Gordy really is a good stick and a good ambassador for our hobby

Craig.. Gun to my head :-)

Bill and Darwin,
You know I love both you guys even though you wear those Orange shirts, and
I have to concede that it is possible to do more with 14 than 12. I want to
point out that the discussion was 2.4 and sailplanes, and I still feel IMHO
that JR offers more flexibility and better RX's for our competition sailplanes
and large scale models with multiple servos and high power requirements. I
also don't often venture in to the large aerobatic arena so it would be unfair
for me to comment on that phase of the hobby. I do know something about
Helicopters, and have always found that JR has had the best flexibility and
options for programming. Even with all the limitations of the 12X over the 14,
that
guy Quique somehow manages to get the 12X to do enough that he is not
embarrassed to show up at a contest. Enough said I hope the Futaba is always
good
to you. Larry

Re: [RCSE] 2.4

2008-05-29 Thread LJolly

I'm a little biased being on Team Futaba. Despite the brand loyalty, I've
looked at all of them and find the Futaba 2.4 receivers the most practical for
the soaring application.

Darwin,
I can't fault you for being a little biased being a team flyer and all. But
in all fairness it is obvious that the new JR 12X is the ultimate radio for
all our applications. Granted I plan to keep my 9303's for my HLG's and
Helicopters. But when it comes to the expensive big stuff there is just one
choice, the 12X. By the way you might want to go over to the Horizon website
and
check out all the new Rx's made especially for the power usage's required in
the
IMAC models and large scale ships where a RX with real beef in the power
department will keep you from getting those embarrassing expensive brownouts
when you can least tolerate them. And for all of you guys running non DSM 2.4
systems and think you have the optimal RX installation, you are dreaming.
Additional Auxiliary RX's are not a sign of a deficient system but a feature of
 a
well thought out system that allows for fine tuning the RF paths in the
model. I do fly quite a few 6 channel DSM RX's and have to fine tune the RX
install because they small Rx's don't have data logger capability. I always
check
a new install with the 7 and 9 channel RX's with the data logger. It is quick
and easy, and offers a serious peace of mind when you have you 2K moldy a
mile and a half down wind. I believe that you will see 2.4 become the norm
much
quicker than predicted here, won't it be nice to run the SWC with NO TX
impound?? Think about the cattle chute at Visalia disappearing? Oh Yea 2.4 is
the ticket and the train has left the station.

I went to the site and donated $20.00, super easy and quick using paypal.

I would have loved to buy a hat, but the artwork has the crescent/star
symbol incorporated in the design, and I would no sooner wear that than
I would walk around sporting a swastika or a hammer and sickle.

It might be a good idea to re-work the design, I think a lot more stuff
might be sold...

Good luck team USA!

Re: [RCSE] Painting moulded fiberglass fuse

2008-05-02 Thread LJolly
Rich, It sounds not like paint but instead surface prep, that is causing the
beading.
Fiberglass fuselages especially those not painted in the mold will have some
sort of release agent
used in the molding process to get the part out and not damage the mold.
Prior to doing any work on a new Fiberglass fuselage the part must be washed
with detergent and water, and then wiped with a rag that has a mild solvent
on
it. Use gloves especially if you might have kids in the future. Now get one
of those flexible sanding pads and scuff the surface of the fuselage. Medium
and Fine grades should do the trick. Make sure and pay particular attention
where you might tape the wings or canopy. You are done when the shine is gone
on the fuselage. If you see small imperfections this is a good time to use a
polyester putty like Evercoat to fill and fair them. Now wipe the fuselage
with Solvent again, and mask off any areas that need to be protected. If an
excellent finish is required use a polyester spray primer, needs touchup gun
and
compressor, wetsand with 240 and then hit with auto paint, poly urethane
finishes or epoxy are tougher and heavier. If you have none of the above use a
spray can Primer misted on in several coats. Resist the urge to spray it in
one
coat. Spray outside where you can see the work and not breathe the fumes.
Preferably the next day wet sand the fuselage with 320 wet and dry to take the
fuzz off. Suspend the fuselage long ways horizontal nose to tail and mist on a
color coat. Start the spray before the fuselage and release the nozzle when
you are off the end of the fuselage, this gives even coats with no runs. 2-3
light coats will prove superior to one coat blasted on. Good luck Larry

He told me that I couldn't expect to get top dollar for an out dated

Re: [RCSE] The Stylus, Airtronics, and Houdini

2008-04-30 Thread LJolly

Friends in Soaring,
As you know I flew Airtronics systems for years and years. I remember when
I got my first Stylus in the early 90's, it was and is, a classic Radio.
However radio design did not stop in 1991. I was involved in discussions for
at
least 3 new radio designs for Sanwa, that were always canceled. It took 4
years to get the 94761 Servo in to our hands, this drove Ron nuts because he
knew
We all had JR servos in our Gliders. I can remember many meetings with Sanwa
Engineers where they patiently listened to what We wanted, and nodded in
agreement. Then 6 months down the road, it was like We had never had the
discussion. We were crying for a new Glider Card, but it wasn't possible. Did
you
ever stop to wonder Why there is not Stylus replacement from Sanwa? The truth
is the Stylus was designed here in America as a project for Airtronics. I
think it was by the same Team that did the software for the Vision. Sanwa has
never designed a radio with all the features of the Stylus. I am not saying
they can't do it, I'm just looking back at my experience with Sanwa, where
they
chose not to do it. If you guys are waiting for Sanwa to come up with your
Stylus replacement, you might get tired of waiting, I know I did. I jumped to
JR and have never been happier. They have a full line of cutting edge Radio
gear, Great Service, Incredible Support for Soaring, and more important,
People willing to listen to us. Team Red is growing, while you are waiting,
We'll
be flying.

[RCSE] Ben Clerx on TV tonight

2008-04-15 Thread LJolly
So, I get home from going to a contest and I am a little tired because it
was way out of town, actually about 8500 miles out of town. My body isn't sure
where it is so I wake up and flip the TV on. Honestly who is walking straight
towards me out of the TV is my flying buddy Ben Clerx. And I am confused
because he doesn't have a chute in his hand. Apparently Our Friend Ben, is not
only a World Recognized Intentional F3J Pilot, but in his spare time he is a
well known UFO Hunter. Apparently Ben will do just about anything to raise
those funds to go to Istanbul. So if you want to see Ben doing his other
thing,
he will be on the History Channels UFO Hunters tonight Wednesday. Apparently
there is a side of Ben that his friends don't see where he isn't wearing that
Floppy Gardening hat. If everything goes well and he gets a spin off sitcom,
we may all see TV cameras at all of our large contests. Way to go Ben! LJ

Re: [RCSE] How long will 72Mhz remain open?

2008-03-10 Thread LJolly

Bill,
I wouldn't expect any dire consequences for the 72 MHZ band. I could see in
the near future where 2.4 will become the choice, and expectation for
contest flying. However, I can tell you that the folks at Horizon will
continue to
support their 72mhz range of equipment, and they have no plans to discontinue
72 Mhz gear at this time. I just ordered a 790 RX this morning because I am
finishing an all carbon F3B model that I don't want to mess around poking
holes in the Nose for. I looked at the flyer for the New JR 12 channel and it
will be offered on 72 Mhz. My own thoughts will be that most of the companies
will maintain 72 Mhz gear as long as it is a viable business option. My
inclination would be to keep selling product as long as people want it. So I
guess, We will decide how long 72 Mhz holds on. Best Regards Larry

So now that 2.4 Ghz is emerging in force; how long will we continue to have
FCC approved access to the 72MHz band?

Paul,
In the case of the Spread Spektrum systems you are absolutely correct. You
will also not be able to take advantage of the Global Unique Identifier that
the allows the dedicated 2.4 systems to recognize a dedicated binded model
setup. Larry

Re: [RCSE] " What's the big deal about 2.4? - Lag...okay now we are getting ...

2008-03-07 Thread LJolly
I understand that some of you will have skepticism in regard to the increase
in performance from the 2.4 Spread Spektrum Systems. The first time that I
flew a my 9303X 2.4 system in a glider I got the feeling I was better
connected to the glider. I did some high speed dives and pulled the elevator in
 a
pylon turn. I definitely could sense a faster response. Remember this effect
is
amplified because I fly a pretty aft CG. In November I was doing some
Helicopter prep for a movie, and installed the 9303X and with 921RX in a
previously
flown machine. This particular Heli features a 3 servo CCPM mixing system to
steer the head. In this case there was no doubt about the improvement in
response and lack of slop in the system. I got the feeling that I was really
hooked up, kind of like flying with tight strings instead of loose ones. So, I
know there is an improvement available with the SS 2.4 systems. But too be
honest with you, I would be more intrigued with 2.4 because of the lack of
frequency conflicts, and great range of equipment available from Horizon. I
know
some of you will not try 2.4 for any number of reasons. But I can list several
friends who have tried it, seen the advantage and now are switching entire
fleets over to Spread Spektrum 2.4 systems. All my best Larry

[RCSE] The new Jr 12X

2008-02-28 Thread LJolly
Guys,
I just wanted to get the word out that the new JR 12X has reached the stage
of Team Field Testing and that it should be available to you soon. I was lucky
enough to snag one of the Test units and can tell you that this is going to
be a very Good Sailplane system.
Basic features are a full 12 channels, 6- 3 position switches on the TX, 5
Flight Modes and 8 programmable Mixes. The system is designed for 4 or 6
servo wings with easy adjustment for all surfaces, 50 model memory, and
Aero,Heli, and Glider software. The 12 channel Rx 's are going to be awesome
for the
Scale sailplane flyers, while most of us will fly our TD ships with a
921Thats right it is on 2.4.
I will fly it this weekend, and report more as testing continues. So for
those of you waiting for the PCM 10 replacement or want a little more than 9303

be patient a little longer it is happening. Larry

[RCSE] 2.4 and Soaring

2008-02-28 Thread LJolly
Gordy,
I am glad to see that you are now discovering 2.4 and the wonderful
advantages it brings to us.
I would like to comment on a couple of points that you brought forth in the
article penned by Dale.
Before I start I want you to know that I think it is great that there is
more than one approach to the integration of 2.4 for RC. Kind of reminds me of
VHS and Beta Max. Was one better than the other? From a technical point of
view, Beta Max was probably better, but in the end the consumer made the
choice
and VHS won out. I started flying for Horizon Team JR last July. I tried 2.4
in August and have flown very few models on 72 since then. I was the one that
requested that Samba and Lubos make glass nosed models for their competition
models. I saw this as an easy way for the average modeler to get a clean, no
hassle installation.
I can remember when the Sailplane Manufacturers started making fuses with
the Hybrid Carbon Kevlar fabrics. Some worked fine with 72mhz others defied
explanation and required antenna extensions and careful antenna placement. I
read Dales article and noted that his requirements for a better system are
different from mine. The first point I would like to make is that from the
reading
I have done multiple Rx's for 2.4 in a system is an advantage. Because of
the potential for blocking and orientation issues as the model is maneuvered
around the sky, multiple Rx's allow for the system to maintain optimal signal
quality. Using a Data Logger is not a crutch for a poorly designed system. It
is a tool that is easily used by a modeler to optimize his Rx installation,
and give him real data so he knows how good, good is. In the old days with 72,
I installed the antenna extension, and test flew the model. I would test the
installation by flying the model at various distances and then aiming the
tip of the antenna and watch for the Airtronics right flap drop. I then
started
collapsing the TX antenna and checking aircraft response..not very
scientific, but in the end I had a good idea how far away I could fly my model.
So now with the Data Logger I know how well my Rx is working and if the
install is optimized. I use and recommend the JR 9303 2.4 system with the 921
Rx.
I have the system installed in My Pike Perfect SL and have had flawless
performance from this combo. Note that it is a very clean and easy installation

with all radio components in the nose and no antennas exposed from the vehicle.
By the way JR does sell several Rx's on 2.4 that don't use a remote Rx. We
fly these in Park flyers and other Aircraft that don't have the complication
of Materials and Range requirements of our Sailplanes.
For me the Spread Spektrum Systems offers excellent performance, and a
complete line of systems and components to best fit my requirements.
For those of you using the FASST system that doesn't have the Data Logger
capability how do you know how well your system is working?
Which is the Better System? Time will tell us but I know where I am putting
my money.
Best Regards Larry Jolly Team JR Air-Heli Pilot

Re: [RCSE] "As the Current Reigning World Champion Woody Pilot..." PT 1 1/2 S...

2008-02-20 Thread LJolly

Gordy,
I am Glad you are finally getting around to accepting the 2.4 revolution. I
have flown nothing but 2.4 since October and never intend to look back.
Besides the increase in model performance through better response time, there
is
nothing that comes close to knowing that if you turn on your tranny and the
model hooks up then you are good to go. I do fly the Spektrum Systems and have
had nothing but excellent performance from them. Thinking back at the SWC
those of use flying after the contest could have fun knowing that WE DON"T
NEED
NO STINKIN CLOTHES PIN cause our Radio lets us know if it is safe to go. YOU
can have that one Gordy, how about a new button. PIN!!! NO Thanks, I am on
2.4
Look forward to hangin with you soon. Larry

And finally...well not finally cuz its still early in this game...2.4 news.
I flew 2.4 in my Marauder and a handful of guys flew various brands in their
2.4 friendly RES and Open ships. It does work if you apply those little
gray cells when installing.

I had a really good chat with Peter Goldsmith (Horizon Hobby) during a lull
in the action and I threw a couple of what-if's at him concerning concern for
2.4 limitations...and well, he was ready for them!

Yep, its about 40 Spectrum TX's that can be on at once, and it while it
would be possible for a situation to arise in some fictional situation where
someone would be inconvenienced...all indications in actual contest conditions
so
faras in real world versus hypotheticalall indications are that its
a case of don't worry...be REAL happy!

This was my first opportunity to experience the out right feeling of freedom
of having a 2.4 system at a contest. Each time they'd call me up to fly my
woody, hand me the 16 clip I had registered for my other classes, I'd just
smile, knowing that it no longer applied...none of 'it'. And flying that
woody
that took the MMGliderTech boys a lot of hours of meticulous building to
create...knowing that it was safe from at least one threat of undeserved
destruction. Each timeit sunk in a little deeper, that feeling of first
freedom, then real realization of what it meant to not even consider the
possibilities, responsibilities and liabilities of having to have a 'channel'.
It
really made me understand how worth it is would be to do the 'work' of getting
those RX's installed correctly.

My chat with Peter G also enlightened me about why they decided on the two
RX system...its pretty logical actually. The 2.4 signal is no more or less
affected by the carbon fuses we use in all of our molded ships today than
72mhz is. But we figured out how to overcome the carbon problem...by
extending
the antenna and allowing it to dangle free of RF signal shading caused by
wings and fuses.

Spectrum's dual RX's provide actual triangulation system for the signals
that pass back and forth, from TX to RXs', a wider 'backstop' of sorts for the
TX signal to be caught with...two hands instead of one to get a good grip on
the information your thumb is trying to get to the servos. A bit of over kill
for most RC applications but just enough for RC sailplanes...that fly wa
off, in sometimes foggy weather, sometimes blocked or deflected by tree
tops, antenna and power towers..and of course timer's bellies :-).

This kind of thinking comes from a company with two top RC sailplane guys in
positions to offer up the 'what-ifs' to designers and engineers at the
manufacturer levels.

Okay does that mean none of the other systems won't or don't work? Nope,
but it does give you all some insight I know I didn't have until I had a
chance
to ask about...after I had some personal experience with 2.4.

Currently I don't have non carbon fuselages for my World's Heaviest Carbon
Supra Lite, or my Perfect, or Pike Giant, or even my Super AVA...but I have
some ideas to try in order to use 2.4 in those airframes successfully. I'll
keep you guys posted on my experiments :-).

Gordy

Re: [RCSE] Contest Format

2008-01-11 Thread LJolly

A note in support of Tom's comments, I noticed that the Munich F3k Contest
registration opened up last week. I was considering going over and was trying
to organize it with some friends. The competition was full in 3 days 110
confirmed 15 on a back up list. I have seen this over and over in European
Events. I have also noticed a younger crowd showing up. My Best regards Larry

Wow lots of stuff here.

In general contests outside the USA are well attended. Contests attendance
inside the USA is diminishing. Why?

Outside the USA they typically fly F3J or a local version of F3J with F3B
winches that the pilots supply btw. They are strict about being on the line
in time; they don't "soften" the task for anyone. They play hardball over
there and their attendance is thriving.

Inside the USA most of our formats are the same since the late 70's while
our models have evolved over the last 30+ years the contests have not. Our
attendance is shrinking, we give in to a sandbagger, and we don't want to
change anything to keep the pilots we have coming back. We don't push
ourselves to try anything new and learn something. Sure the new guy has lots
to learn starting from zero but after 6 months what is next? Guys soaring is
not difficult.
How many of us are significantly better pilots after the first 2 or 3 years?
What have you learned the last 3 years? We quit flying if the conditions get
a little rough. You can choose your issue all day long as why we get board
or why attendance is shrinking.

BTW, Each and every contest I have been to is a social event! That's the
nature of humans. We tend to have fun when we can. I would say lets play a
little hardball and push our skills a bit and move up a peg. The USA was at
one time a soaring leader we sure can't say that anymore.

Re: [RCSE] Contest Format

Rick, Good Points... What kind of Cookies are We talking here. Larry Jolly

Here's a format that's fair to everyone and no hurt feelings at the
end of the contest.

We'll let everyone launch whenever they want and fly for whatever
they can accomplish. When they land we'll rub their heads and tell
them what a great job they did and give them a max score. If they
break the line or pop off we'll ask them if that's their flight or if
they want a 'do over'. Either way they are rewarded with a max score
for being so aggressive on the launch. If they land off the field
we'll give them the max landing score for trying so hard. On the
field landing and they get a max score for their great skill.

Should anyone crash they would immediately be awarded a max score for
heroism and almost saving their plane and a new-in-box replacement
for their broken airplane. After the predetermined number of rounds
selected to make sure that no one gets too tired during the day we'll
give everyone a small trophy and take a group picture to
celebrate. Then everyone gets a nice box of juice and candy or
cookie snack before they head home. All butterflies and warm milk
thoughts will fill their heads as the drive that long highway home.

Anything less than this and the contest is obviously unfair, poor
sportsmanship or cheating. The argument is over.

Cheers
Rick

Guys,
I don't know what is more scary.. The Mysterious Pilot # 41 waiting to shoot

Mgz Integration. I love Gordy as much as the rest of you but remember when We
took Aero 101 From the Stahl Master. I took all the rudders off my airplanes
because they didn't need them. The fact of the matter is this is an over
simplified view of the 2.4 question. I jumped to 2.4 in September, that is all
I
fly now. Once you fly 2.4 and find that you have no Electric Glitches from
your ESC, The controls are quicker, and you can fly when you want where you
want
you won't go back. All my 72 Mhz stuff is for Sale. In fact I am inviting
all you 72 Die Hards to come check out My Airtronics Going Out of Business sale

Got these from the XtremePowerSystems site (letting the Christmas turkey

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the general modeler believed that
with 2.4 all concerns for freq control were overMillions could all be on
at
once...there was the story about the huge heli event with hundreds of
attendees most enjoying the freedom of 2.4hmmmn.

Did you all believe that the amount of 2.4 TXs on at once was almost
unlimited?

Here's another wrench in the freq paradise workswhat about a mix of
brands and systems? Some using two channels at once, some hopping around.

Regardless of the information encoding, radio waves are still radio waves,
and can be shaded, mixed and diluted.

How do you control 100+ contestants 2.4 TX's when there isn't any channel
assignments? Impound every TX and only let up to 39 of one brand at a time?
>From 50 channels controlled to 38 hopefully safe?

Just wondering, if anyone else is wondering...oh yeah Merry Chrismas!

[RCSE] New Horizon Eflite Blade 400

2007-12-22 Thread LJolly
Guys, Forgive the Bandwidth intrusion but I know that some of you are
interested in Rc Helicopters. About 20 minutes ago I heard the FedEx truck
Backing
up the driveway. There was a box waiting and I knew instantly it was my long
awaited Blade 400. I opened the box in the drive way and pulled out a fully
ready to Fly 3D RC Electric Helicopter. I grabbed the new DX6I manual to see
where the flight mode switch, and Throttle hold switches were, kind of a safety
deal for Helicopters, keeps em from Jumpin up and Biting you before you get
to know them. I put the 4 AA cells in the Tx and fired it up. Sure enough
there was a Blade 400 Model memory already installed. I then put the 3S 1800
LiPo pack into place on the Helicopter. I had the Throttle hold activated so I
could check control throws, pitch range and Gyro direction. So I looked around,
no kids or dogs, I lowered the throttle stick and clicked off the throttle
hold. I slowly brought the R's up watching the machine to make sure everything
was stuck on tight and everything was in balance. The Blade features a super
nice soft start ESC, at half throttle the Blade was in the Hover. What a
cool helicopter the head tracked, and the gyro sensitivity was acceptable. I
took it up did some flybys back in to the hover it was pirouetting around me
like We were long time friends. So I landed it, took the battery off the
vehicle
to charge, and came in here to tell you about it. It is impressive that the
Eflite gang can send out a totally set up Helicopter ready to fly out of the
Box. With so many potential problems in setting up a machine this complex,
this has to be heralded as quite an achievement. By the way this is a real
fly
in the wind sport machine. Mine winds a little higher that I would expect on
approach but what the heck, I will now read the Manual and figure out how to
adjust the throttle curve on the low end. Its even sweeter that this guy is
on 2.4, and it looks like the Dx6 I has 10 model memories with Airplane and
Helicopter basic software. So get some stick time on one of the coaxial indoor
Helis like the Blade CX, and then get ready to move up. Darwin you need one
of these!! Just wanted to share this... Merry Christmas to you...and
Merry Christmas to me, I know what I am going to be doing. Larry Jolly

Robert, Neither of your installations are optimal.
In the Organic you are still dealing with the Kevlar Carbon Weave of the
main Fuselage. The 6200 is a great little Rx I have been flying the daylights
out of them.In the Organic try getting the Main Rx away from the Battery and
mount it down so the you have maximum exposure through the cutout on the
bottom of the nose. Get a longer extension that will allow you to place the
remote
up in the wing. You can break the lead with a Deans 3 Pin Connector at the
same place you have your wing harness connector. Put the Remote aft in the
Oracover section of the wing. See if this helps out. With the Taboo the
whiskers is the only way unless you put the RX in the wing in the Kevlar
portion and
run all you servos through a connector.

[RCSE] New LSF Thread Level 6

2006-09-14 Thread LJolly

I read Skip's, response last night and it occurred to me that with as many
Level 5's as there are now, Skip has a valid point about initiating a Level
6.
I have to admit that I am not much interested in the thread that has
been being passed around on this forum the last week. Either you get it or you
don't, the LSF program is a personal achievement program that was designed to
enable the aspirant to gain as much experience as possible in all phases of RC
Soaring including competition, with other like minded pilots. The
program has stood the test of time, and requires commitment and dedication
to achieve the highest coveted levels. The wisdom of the founders of
the achievement program has proven that even with the performance
available in modern gliders, the program is still challenging, and the pilot
will gain much knowledge and piloting expertise as he climbs the ladder of
achievements. Level 5 is not designed to be easy, and is not a goal that
everyone will achieve. All arguments about the program being impossible and
extraordinarily hard are B.S.. It wasn't to hard for John Ericson who just
finished his level 5. So if you have decided that you don't have what it
takes to be a Level 4 or 5. You just can't invest the time, and in the end
it just is not something that you really want to do. Then admit it and go
on. Changing a valid program to match your circumstances just isn't realistic or
fair to those that have finished the program before you.
How ever, with that said, several Level 5's have discussed the
possibilities of higher Levels in the past. Personally I have mixed
feelings about adding another level, as many Level 5's are not available to
compete in a modified program. A common occurrence is that Level 5's stay
focused for several years climbing the LSF ladder and then when they get level
5, they are frustrated that that is all there is. Some have gone on and repeated
the Level 5 tasks several times. If there were a Level 6, several of
our LSF leaders would show renewed interest in LSF and the achievement
program. These persons would, and could act as valuable mentors for other LSF
achievers working on the lower levels. Leadership comes from the top, If the LSF
can find a way to interest it's highest achievers in a new level, it might just
be the ticket to reinvigorate the whole program.  Larry Jolly LSF

Mike, I don't know if you ever saw Mark fly at the Anaheim Trade Shows. I was in High School at the time, and can remember Mark ending his Windfree Demo by diving at high speed, at a spot 4 feet in front of him. When the impact with his knees looked imminent, Mark would pull the Windfree in to a graceful loop and and finish by catching the model at waist height. I watched as many shows as I could, and can remember Mark closing the gap to where the aiming point moved to very nearly the tows of his sneakers. He would pull up in to a loop  and lean back, one handing the Orbit tranny to his right side. One mistake and a certain trip to the reconstructive dentist would be a certainty. Mark is clever, with a wide range of interests. You don't have to chat with him long to realize that Mark is a guy that can really put Toy airplanes in to perspective. Thanks for talking him in to the Muncie Deal, I doubt We will get much sleep. Larry  Working in Albuquerque this week, having dinner with Taylor Collins.

Also developer of the 'kiss and click' spot landing. Back some 35 or so

to get time and spots at landing. Grease that little beauty in a foot or
so off the deck and at the exact time, kiss the nose off the grass (or
dirt, or whatever), then bounce it back into the air and fly it into a
perfect spot without having to worry about the time. No skids, skegs or

If this is an isolated problem then it appears to me that Vladmir should step up with a replacement fuse for Don.  It's really tough to tell a whole lot from pictures, but it does not look like this one was very well bonded and could have just been a fluke.

Hi guys!
I've passed your feelings along to Vladimir, pretty sure he was wondering what you thought he should do (you know the right thing), but I'm not sure that 'step up' translates into Ukraine.  I have his address in case you are forming up a lynch mob. :-)Funny Vlad went from a hero to a bum in less than 24 hours and he don't even know it :-)

Last I read, Don Richmond asked for ideas on how to fix his fuse, not suggestions about what to tell Vladimirbut now he has some thoughts on that idea too:-)

Here's Vladimir's address if you have some suggestions or ideas on how to change the fuse, the mold the layup or the resin, likely he would be happy to hear them. :-)

Re: [RCSE] Supra #42 problem

2006-03-27 Thread LJolly

Don,
Clean up the cured epoxy around the edges with some 80 grit.
Make sure you get everything shiny keyed and scuffed. Remove the wire harness.
Procure some small carbon fiber sock material 1/4" diameter should be good. Cut
a length that will fit the perimeter of the wing hold down about a 1/4 "from the
edge. Make up some slow cure epoxy and some fairly thick slurry with cotton
flocking. Wet the tube out on plastic and lay it in place on the pod side of the
wing mount. Using the tube as a dam apply a seam of flocking around the edge of
the mount. Use some of the epoxy to wet the top cap where it will touch the
flocking and the tube. If there is any place that the bolt hold downs can touch
the pod sides apply a coat of cotton flocking slurry. Push the top plate into
posiiton and if it goes down all the way tape the edge with packing tape. If it
will not go down rearrange the sock by pushing it towards the center of the
mount. Now turn the fuselage upside down and clean the excess epoxy off the
exterior of the fuse pod. Keep the fuselage upside down over night. That should
do the trick. Best Regards Larry

Many Thanks to all My friends at CASL for a great contest!

The plane I flew in RES is Hobby Clubs Danny Design. It is a fine model and flies very well, I do recommend this model to any one wanting to try this type of model.  As for the Supra observations I had both my standard model 64 ounces and my all carbon 68 ounces at the contest. The models launch and fly very well, and will be part of my quiver for the foreseeable future.  At no time was I in any danger of not making my time.I am embarrassed to tell you that I missed 3 landings that should have been 25's, for some reason I was having trouble keeping the model between the lanes on landing. You can bet that I will get  out and fine tune the landing mode and get these landings down for the next step in the triad. Looking at total scores, looks like three RES planes - what ever LJ flew and

two AVAs where in the top ten scores- 3/4/6 best total scores.
Three RES birds out of the top ten and at roughly 1/2 the cost, when you
factor in servo costs, than say a Supra. Not too shabby.

warm enough for you guys to go fly. Remember April is Bash Barry month! Best

Re: [RCSE] Supras done

2006-01-06 Thread LJolly

Walter,
I flew Tom Kieslings Bagged F3J version over at Istanbul.
While I think one flight is to limited to draw conclusions, I can comment
that both models have similar characteristics. One thing that is obvious to me
is that I cannot build a wing as accurate as the ones that come from Barry.
I have had a lot of experience flying bagged Xp4's and Blasters, and I can tell
you that there is a great difference between a bagged Drela section and a molded
one. My Supra at 64 ounces does not leave me wishing it were 55 ounces. If you
like to build, then bag one. If it were up to me I would work the hours instead
of bagging it, and use that cash to buy one out of a
mold. Regardless I think you will be satisfied from the performance of
either version. Bur then my Grandma always thought her pies baked at home,
tasted better than store bought ones! Best Regards
Larry

Re: [RCSE] Supras done

2006-01-06 Thread LJolly

Tom,
I agree with your comments on the Supras flying qualities. While no
airplane is a Silver Bullet, this one is better than anything I have flown
before. It reads air unbelievably well, has long legs, good float, and launches,
and lands well. The Supra accelerates effortlessly from float to
cruise. I really like this because my main interest is F3J and
this acceleration will translate to quicker launches. For the top flyers
like Kiesling and Perkins they probably won't see much more out of this model
than what they get from what they are flying right now. But the rest of us are
going to have an easier go with this airplane. I think it will have wide appeal
and with good reason it is really a fine model. By the way did you talk Skip in
to flying it yet? I told him to order two, the day I test flew mine.
Good luck with it, and let's not land out after this discussion :-)

Daryl.
I've got 5 plus hours on the Supra and like the set-up at 3.8". The
model rotates and pulls fine even on a low to medium tension launch. The tow
hook is real grippy and I have no problem circle towing it on my Hi Start. I
think that is with out a flat filed on the hook. The model can take a hard
launch, I chatted with Arend Borst who is towing the #$%@ out of it on mono, in
the wind. He told me he got some pretty good flex but was really impressed with
the ping and zoom. Guys just put it together and fly it.If you want it really
stable put the Big joiners in it, most of you will fly with 2.5 degree joiners
for the feel of the model. The model is so stable I can't beleive that we are
talking about launching this thing , itwill not snap or
biteRegards

[RCSE] The Moulded Supra Fly's

2005-10-19 Thread LJolly

Hey guys, just wanted to drop you a note and let you know I have about an
hour and a half on the Supra. All launches were by hand or short start. The wind
was 10 to 15 MPH with average convection, it is still a little wet after
our 3 days of rain. I outfitted the model with 6-Airtronics 761 digitals and a
1650 NiMH pack. The model took 2 ounces in the nose and weighs 63 ounces. I put
the CG where DR Drela suggested and the stab at 0 degrees to the tailboom. I
used the large angle dihedral joiners.  I have the mixing and comps at
about 95 percent of where I will end up with them, just a little fine tuning
left now. All I can say is WOW this is going to be a popular model. Mark and Tom
already know this, but the Supra climbs like a model that is much lighter than
it is, and it covers ground like a model that is much heavier. I can only
imagine what Mark Drelas model must crawl like at 40 ounces, but this is just
about the best performing model I have flown. The model is very pilot
friendly, I would put it in the benign category for handling, and at the same
time will go where you point it. The models sleek aerodynamics allow it to turn
at high angles of attack, without apparent tip losses. You know those low level
puffs that would save you if you could just stay in them.,well the Supra can
ride this ridiculous kind of lift. I will be out at El Dorados field on Sunday
morning about 10:00 AM if you want to get some stick time on this new glider.
Gordy, I expect that you will fly out to Long Beach to fly with us. I
want to thank Mark Drela for his efforts in designing such a great
performing sailplane, and Vladimir and Barry for making this model available to
the rest of us. Best Regards Larry Jolly

Re: [RCSE] Subject: RC and airports

2005-10-11 Thread LJolly

Martin,
I am surprised at your take on Daryl's positing. I can assure you
that a collision between a model and man carrying air vehicle could have dire
consequences for both pilots.  RC flying exists only because our
organization has succeeded in convincing the FAA that we are all reasonable
people that would never knowingly pose a danger to aerial navigation. We must
all conduct our flying activities so that we can never cause a collision or near
miss with a full size aircraft. I have to assume that you are not a pilot, if
you had flight experience you would realize how hard it is to see a model while
you are on approach. Because of ground clutter and probably afternoon glare it
is nearly impossible to see a model flying near you. Because of this
disadvantage for the full-size pilot, the model flyer must always
immediately maneuver a model away from the flight path of a full-size
vehicle. Being on the ground you have a much better view of what is going on
than the poor guy making his approach. I hope all model flyers take this
obligation seriously. I wouldn't want to be the guy who ended RC flying in the
US, while at the same time killing some poor guy and his family just trying to
get home. As for Daryl overreacting, having the shit scared out of you will do
that to you. Please fly safely, and think about that guy that cant see
you. Larry Jolly

[RCSE] Information on Marks Service

2005-07-06 Thread LJolly

From Cindy
Brickner Caracole Soaring

Friends:

This has been
a torturous week for us.

Mark Navarre
went soaring with several friends on Sunday, July 3, and discontinued
his
position
reporting shortly after 3 pm.  It was a normal, nice summer afternoon on
the Sierras,
working
altitudes of 14 ~ 15,000 msl were possible.  The other pilots returned home
to California City
by 6 pm, and
no one had heard from Mark.  We tried radio relays on 123.3 and 123.5 from
ATC
asking pilots
to call down while transitioning.  No answer was
received.

From Cal
City, three pilots departed in a Mooney to the area to give Mark a
chance to signal to their
overflight.  Based on our phone request, the
Pawnee from Santa Ynez, based at Bishop that weekend
also searched
for the hour before dark.   Inyo County Search and
Rescue was
notified
about 8:30 pm, and they prepared to start searching early
Monday.

Monday
morning three aircraft flown by glider pilots  (Pawnee, Mooney, Bonanza)
and a Taifun
motorglider
searched the area  between Onion Valley and Coyote Flats, before
Inyo S & R
required them to clear some airspace while the CHP
helicopter worked.  Sheriff's personnel
found the
wreckage and confirmed Mark's passage at approximately 1 pm.  The fact that
Mark gave
regular
position reports, and was seen by a southbound pilot, limited the search area to
be pertinent.
No matter the
speed of the response, Mark was lost immediately.

The glider
impacted steep terrain at 11,700 msl, south west of Coyote Flats.  We have
no access
to any flight
recorder data, so it is impossible to conjecture what may have happened.
If data
becomes
available later, we will attempt to pass useful knowledge to soaring
pilots.  There was
no unusual
weather, it was CAVU with scattered cu at ~ 15,500 over the middle Sierra.
We still do not
have access
to the exact crash coordinates, so speculation is pointless.  The
approximate site was
later
overflown for two hours by us, without locating the glider against snow covered
background.

The only
pertinent comment that can be made at this time is for soaring pilots to provide
more
separation
between themselves and terrain in all conditions, acknowledge incremental
development of skills
and respect
personal limitations.

The family
eagerly wishes the attendance of flying friends at Mark's service, and a family
gathering to follow.

Services are
set for

Saturday,    July 9,
10:00 a.m.
The San
Antonio Catholic Church at
5800 E. Santa
Ana Canyon Road, Anaheim, CA 92807

In lieu of
flowers, donations should be made in Mark's memory to
SSA - Youth
Soaring Flight Scholarships    or    Soaring
Safety Education.

I have known Mark for several years, and have seen him more often in
the last few years as we both flew out of Cal City. Mark flew his ASW  20
OD, hard and fast, and I often followed his pace as he called in position
reports on the radio, as he raced up and down the Sierra Range. I don't know all
the circumstances of his accident, but know that the Caracole group would have
done everything possible to help him when he failed to make it back to the
field. I will miss his words and his thoughts on this sport that was such a
big part of him. Mark will be missed, he was a good guy, he was a good
stick, he was my friend. Larry Jolly

[RCSE] F3J Guys Vote No on TS Rules Ballot

2005-03-13 Thread LJolly

Gentlemen,
It has come to my attention that the AMA is sending a ballot to past team participants to vote on the new F3J Team Selection Program Rules. I am asking all interested participants to consider the following points and Vote NO on the proposal as presented. As many of you know the TSC has modified the rules that we have flown the last 2 cycles, to redefine the   "team protection" clause. In an effort to get everyone to fly against everyone, they have determined that the maximum team size should be 6. I am lobbying to get this number changed to 8. It is my belief that going to a maximum team size of 8 will allow teams traveling from around the country to fly in the Team Finals, without the need to come up with designated towers. I think that this extremely important as this is the avenue that most people favor to get in to the program. If we stay with the 6 man team with 2 people flying in a heat, you will need to have available 2 extra people who are non fliers to act as designated towers. I think that it would be beneficial for the program to turn these extra people in to participants. We will still all fly against each other, teams traveling to the finals will not have to look for locals to tow for the day, It will be easier from a logistics view for the contest organizers, Two teams of 4 can form an alliance in to a team of 8. It will prove to be a fairer way to proceed. Let's make sure that we pick this team in the air, not the guys that are lucky enough to get a launch at the horn in every slot. Please vote NO and pen in, change the team from 6 to 8. If you don't get a letter, please contact Lisa Johnson in Competitions at the AMA Headquarters. Thank you Larry Jolly

Re: [RCSE] Re: Mirage

2004-12-21 Thread LJolly
Dave,
You remember the event correctly but not the pilot. That was none other than my old buddy Bob Gerbin. You may remember Bob for the picture in Model Builder with the double size scale and Windfree he built with it. Bob learned the tough way about keying a pre molded surface before bonding. That whole right wing just kind of peeled off and left those two spars sticking out in space I can still see that transparent yellow wing turning and twisting in that thermal as it disappeared over the hill at SULA. If I recall correctly that was the same contest that Terry Koplan asked for a reflight because the winch which had one of those resistors on the bottom, I think it was HiFlight, set the grass under it on fire during his launch. I remember flying Blaine's prototype down at the Blimp station. He told me to have fun with it, it will do 60 but 70 is probably to much. Kind of like walking your best friends girlfriend home, you definitely watch how far you push it. I flew a Mirage and found it a nice lightweight airplane. I used to latch the towhook on some light weight mono and walked backward letting the line off the reel while I flew it in figure 8's I had a good time sitting in the grass winding that Mirage up like they do with stunt kites now. It was and is a nice model. You guys flying the light weights might want to take up some tap dancing or blues tapping to get that rhythm down for winch pulsing. Happy Holidays Larry

[RCSE] New Airtronics Digital Wing Servo

2004-12-15 Thread LJolly

I thought I would give you guys a heads up, the new Digital Wing Servo from Airtronics is now a reality.  Sanwa was a little slow to realize the need for a competitive wing servo. JR , Futaba, and Volz all have top of the line wing servos, my favorite is the JR DS 368. I got 4 of the new servos to test, and have them installed in my Starlight 3000 Xtail. The servo is about the same size as the DS368, just a little thinner, and features case lugs for either top or side mounting. Torque specs and holding power are equivalent to the DS368. The servo has a very nice feel to it with no servo arm rock and a good gear mesh with minimal play. So far speed and centering are very good, I  plan on  thorough testing with this model and will get back to you on how they hold up. The servo will be available in early 2005 with a street price around $53.00. Best regards and Happy Holidays to my Soaring Buds around the World  Larry Jolly   I included a pictures at my web site:

Re: [RCSE] F3J in Turkey - More info...

2004-11-02 Thread LJolly
Just got back early this morning. I want to congratulate the Turkish AeroClub for
raising the bar in contest organization. This was undoubtedly the finest Competition
that I have ever attended. For those of you who do not have any knowledge of Turkey it
is a modern European Country and a staunch ally of the USA. All Competitors were very
friendly with camaraderie, good sportsmanship and large quantities of Alcohol made for
a week long party. There will be more details later but I can give you some
information now. Fist this is an invitational meet, this was the 3rd annual contest
and the first for American attendance. This year they invited 100 contestants with 4
Americans Jim McCarthy, Skip Miller, Joe Wurts, and myself. The contest was Friday and
Saturday with one of the Fly off rounds Sunday morning. We flew 6 preliminary rounds
with one throw out. After 5 Joe was first with 4998.7 I was second with 4998.4 and Skip
was also in the top 12 with a score of 4990 plus. The weather was very Northern
California like, with cycling conditions and trigger temps reached by 11:00 am each
day. The top 12 flyers gathered late on Saturday for the first fly-off which had to be
reflown. All 12 pilots were within one minute of the max, this achieved by launching
and flying to a hill face that was in the right direction of the diminishing breeze
where they slowly sank for 15 minutes.
Sunday morning the second round was flown in buoyant but not defined conditions. We
launched downwind so it was sporting conditions. Since the US was lucky enough to put
3 into the fly-offs, and We did not take towers, the organizers graciously supplied
towmen, who were eager but,as expected there were some communication issues. During
the prelims We took care of the communication deal by kicking at 4 seconds, and hoping
we had tension prior to the horn, but often waiting one or two seconds in to working
time to launch. I didn't really get a launch in the last flyoff round, and as a
result I got to watch Joe and Philip duke it out in a hang contest. Joe put up a
gallant flight but had to negotiate a path to the circle that would not give him a
safety penalty. Philip had a better spot and was able to get Joe by a few seconds.I
think it was about 8:30 ish for flight times. After F3J there was a 3 round Speed
contest. The highlights for me, was the F3B model Launched on 400 meters of speedline
being towed on the back of an ATV. This achieved unbelievable altitude, probably a 12
second zoom. And, oh Yea the Salsa Dancing on Friday night at the field that even had
a US pilot with 2 left feet dancing in front of the crowd. For just a second I felt
like Gordy. I will leave more for the others, but have never had a better time.
Special thanks to the Turkish Aero Club and Mustafeh Koc for making this all happen.
Best Regards Larry Jolly

[RCSE] Fun Toys

2004-09-28 Thread LJolly
Hey guys,
I just wanted to pass on some information on some fun toys that Hobby Lobby is bringing in. They import models from the Czech company Alfa Models. The models I am referring to here are the foamy scale P-51, Focke Wulf 190, and Corsair. These models have pretty accurate outlines and are light enough to have real predictable flight characteristics. Finished weights are around 14 ounces, and they are real ARF's they take about 2 hours to get in to the air. You can check out these models over at the Hobby Lobby website, and there are videos of  each model flying. I used an MP Jet 28-7-35 out rider motor, Phoenix 10 motor controller, a 3 cell Thunder Power 860 ma pack, 2- Airtronics 94091 servos, a Berg 4 channel RX, and an APC 9x4 prop in my model. This combination has reserve power and flies for about 15 minutes. The motor is virtually silent and really has the power when you need it.
Maybe not as much fun as your Flying Wing F3B Icon, steered with a new JR 9303, in a high stakes in or out landing contest, while trying to decide between the NASCAR Race or Gordy shooting landings on the high DEF screen on your new Futaba fully synthesized 14 channel, but fun. Larry Jolly

Re: [RCSE] HLG Receiver Recommendations?

2004-01-22 Thread LJolly

Jerry,
I switched to Berg last year and have been extremely happy with the results. I had nothing but glitches with the originals that I purchased 4 years ago. But these new versions are bullet proof. They also have a new antenna  available that is on a mylar sheet and would be perfect on the bottom of a wing. Berg also has RX's available on 50mhz. I use them and recommend them to my friends. regards Larry see them at RC Direct

Re: [RCSE] WC New Years Day Postal Results #1

2004-01-01 Thread LJolly

Hi Ray,
I decided to go to Dan Borer's New Year's Day gathering at the SWSA field. We had about 20 guys out enjoying the first soaring day of the year. We had pretty bad weather here in California today, there is a winter storm coming through with heavy alto-cirrus stuff at 20k. This amounts to having a 60%-70% filter on the Sun. We had a great day but it was 11:30 before the first thermals triggered. I launched at 11:37 and managed 55:12 with my 2 meter Volant. This 9 year old model features a  glass fuselage, wood wings and tail, with aSD3021 section. I was timed by Frank Corsaro AMA 7265. When I landed the Volant I switched to my Comet 176" Eppler 205 Wood wings and glass fuselage.
This was a good combination for the next hour or so, while Mike Reagan and Merrill Brady kept me company. I got to about 2500'-3000' a couple of times but the cirrus stuff came back and shut the field off a little after 2:00 PM. I struggled in some light stuff but had to surrender at 1:35.09.  It was a laugh to fly the Comet again, this one hadn't been airborne since 89 or 90. I had a fun day and want to thank both you and Dan for getting us to get out and fly. And a special thanks to Dan and my other friends from SWSA that stuck around to watch me land. Regards Larry Jolly

Re: [RCSE] F3J Juniors Snubbed?

2003-09-02 Thread LJolly

David,
It was very unfortunate that the weather did not cooperate at the F3J Finals. I believe that Phil Renaud and the Rocky Mountain group did a great job under the extreme pressure they were under to get this contest completed. It is natural for a competitor to want to get as many chances to fly as possible. It is always tough in an abbreviated contest, especially if you are sitting on 2 throw-out scores in a 1 throw-out contest. I don't believe that the Juniors were slighted, all had equal chances to score, and hopefully they enjoyed their competition and gained valuable experience. I agree that it would have been desirable for the juniors to have the same number of flights as the seniors.  Even at the World Champs the Juniors will fly fewer rounds than the Senior pilots. It is also desirable for the juniors to have their finals at the same site and time as the open contest so that they can gain experience and learn the sport.
We are lucky to have generous people willing to give up their Labor Day weekend to make this contest possible. Thanks a million to the crew that pulled this one off, you did a great job. Regards Larry Jolly

Re: [RCSE] US F3B team

2002-09-04 Thread LJolly

Thanks for the inquiry but Joe is flying in the Viking Cup, and Daryl has the
option to go, or not go. For myself, I still enjoy F3B very much, but only
have enough time to commit to F3J. So much Fun to be had and so little time
to enjoy it. Congratulations to Gavin, Daryl, and Mike. They have all flown
well and practiced hard to get to where they are. I hope that they do well
in Germany and that they have a great time just being there. Let's all get
behind them and wish them well in their quest for a World title. Best wishes

Re: [RCSE] Interesting fact about New Volz Micro Maxx Xseries

2002-07-16 Thread LJolly

Tony,
You are right you should never man-handle a servo
by manipulating the surface. I gently move the surface to look for gear problems. If
you apply a quick rotation or quickly change direction you may damage the nylon gear
used as a fuse in a metal gear servo. Never push a Flap to full deflection=over
center, and then manually try to return the flap. What I do is feel the sevos mesh
looking for smooth operation. If you suspect a damaged gear move the surface away from
center and turn your radio on. Move the surface you suspect by radio command. A damged
servo will usally grind and or respond with a jerky motion and gradually lose its
ability to hold center. Best wishes Larry

Re: [RCSE] Celebs in RC Soaring

Pat,
Thanks for the kind words, but my work can hardly qualify me as a celebrity.
My team and I are just a few of the thousand or so individuals who bring a
movie to the big screen. We did win an Emmy for Visual effects on Miracle
Landing for the 1/10 737. Recently my team did the 1/4 scale Hueys for
Charlie's Angels, a nice explosion all done in the camera no CG enhancements,
The 1/4 scale aft fuselage and tail section MD11 for Castaway, Bell 212s for
Segals Exit Wounds, 1/6 th B25 for the Doolittle crash for Pearl Harbor, 1/4
scale MDX 900 for Travoltas Operation Sworfdish, and WE have just finished 14
Biplanes for Stuart Little 2 in various sizes and versions. I have worked
everyday since JAN 3 except Easter and Mother's day. I am now ready to start
training for the F3J finals and am desperately looking forward to some model
and full-size glider flying. By the way I am lucky to have several people
you guys fly with helping me. LJMP crew who also fly RCsaiplanes are Steve
Addis, Dennis Brandt, Bob Pope, Dan Fink, and many others. You can check out
some past work at LJMP.com .Thanks Larry

Re: [RCSE] Public Apology

2001-02-12 Thread LJolly

To Joe, Daryl, Sal and Members of RCSE,
I, also publicly apologize to all of you, and vow to never respond to a
controversially thread again. I am sorry for hurting Joe's feelings, and ask
that all involved end this thread. While I respectfully choose to disagree
with Joe, I also acknowledge his right to a contrary opinion. I want the 2001
USA F3B Team to get on with their preparation and fundraising. The guys have
a great amount to do, and the clock is ticking. I wish them the best in their
endeavors and call on the rest of you to do the same. While I choose not to
have a relationship with Joe on a personal level, I still respect his
knowledge, talents, and achievements. In the end it is just toy airplanes,
and I have more important concerns like Family and business than to waste any
more of your time with this trivial thread. Respectfully Larry

Fwd: [RCSE] Re: Opinions (response to last weeks post)

2001-02-09 Thread LJolly

Joe,
I prefer to let this post die a Happy death. My opinions are my own. For your
information what started that post was Sal's maligning the Europeans. The
fact of the matter is that he stated that you now had the ultimate F3J Toy,
and Daryl had the ultimate TD Toy and also the next F3B winner. Just for the
record you must know about that post from Sal after all you found mine. But
with out that reference you can stick to attacking me ,right. So Joe how can
Sal make those statements, they are not fact. Your model has never been in an
F3J meet, and Daryl's Super Fletcher hasn't even got the molds polished out
yet. That was blatant self promotion for SAl and his boys and is not
factual. Don't you ever get self righteous and condemn me for being part of
the old F3B wars. It was your club not mine that started the barrage of
Techno advantage wars in that game. As far as a friendlier group involved
now, is that what you call that little bit of Rules twisting you, and your
Win at any costs team mates pulled at the last team trials. You guys cheated
and your little philosophical comment about fighting it out in the air made
me laugh out loud. Your buddy Daryl even got so blatant as to say that if
Randy had been the CD he wouldn't have got away with it. Got away with what?
I thought what you guys did was legal, right. No, Joe, it is you with the
problem not me. The fact is that you and Daryl treat people poorly, it is
true that Daryl is far more of a user than you are. I know that I am on your
list and that when the chips go don't fall in my favor that you will secretly
chuckle at my score. The simple fact is that after years of experience with
you and Daryl I prefer not to be a friend. Personally I find you people
contrary to the way I want, to live my life. I wish you the best, but do not
support you in any of your endeavors. If there is a competition that I can
use my limited abilities to compete against you, I will. Since all you live
for is the challenge of the hunt it means so much more when I read Jolly in
front of Wurts. I am not taking any abuse from you, if you want to go public,
bring it on. Larry

[RCSE] Fwd: Your Note

2000-09-08 Thread LJolly

Daryl,
I have been a huge supporter of yours for years. When Skip, and Tom, and Mark
all called me to ask what could be done after their protest was declined for
being to late, I was dragged into it. You and I both know there is a big
difference between, repairing something that already exists and swapping out
parts. You changed Parts buddy, and maybe you got away with it. But that
doesn't make it right. I have no stake here, and frankly am very sorry that
you have chosen this path. It is your reputation, you choose. Obviously you
aren't having any trouble sleeping at night, as far as I am concerned the
situation is over. Larry
