The wood was nice. I still have a few sheets of Anigre as well as
Obeche. The Anigre used was pretty thin. Probably only a couple of
ounces extra on a unlimited wing compared to 1/16 balsa and much more
durable.

I use Polyurethene glue for my Pegasus wig construction. Pro bond or Excel
which is what I use. For thick power plane wings this requires no additional
glass or carbon cloth reinforcing under the skins. See link below to photo
esays on how to do it step by step. If, however you are building thin
sailplane wings, you may need to add some sort of glass cloth reinforcing, I
have not done this myself, but I am told the Polyurethene will perform very
well when used with woven reinforcements. As in epoxy use wet out the cloth
well. Polyurethene expands as it dries and will fill every pore of foam and
balsa. You do not even need to edge glue the balsa, just edge straighten the
sheets and use masking tape to hold them together. The glue seps up through
the seam and glues it. Polyurethene is lighter than epoxy, less toxic, sets
faster, and penetrates the substrates for a strong bond. This glue requires
moisture to activate. Usually ambient moisture in the air and balsa is
plenty in the Northeast US. You may dampen the balsa if you are in doubt. Do
a small test. Weight the wings and cores well due expansion of the glue.

3M works well, but some people have problems with it delaminating in high heat
environments like Arizona or New Mexico, and to some extent, California in the summer
time. Its much easier to apply them epoxy, which tends to be really messy.

I've had good results with both methods. I am not familiar with what "oderless" epoxy
is, however. I typically use 2 hour epoxy, which is thin (and there for easy to
spread), and has a very long working time.

Try Pro-Bond Polyurethane glue. Spread it very thin. Works great.

[RCSE] How do I install balsa skins???

2001-12-12 Thread Dookiecydoor

Hi there,
I was going to put my balsa skins on my foam core's. I went to the
hobby store to get some oderless one hour epoxy. I was talking with several
guys about this. They told me that I should use 3m super 77 spray, instead of
epoxy. Is this a good choice or not. Does the 3m super 77 work as well as
oderless epoxy??? Does it hold up well against time, and temperture change??
Please advise. You guys on this list, are my only real connection with reality
for questions like this.People in hobby stores are really two sided when it
comes to facts.
  Thanks for any advice,
