[RCSE] Results from the Pre F3J World Contest
#2 DP ! #4 Rich Burnowski #5 JW #7 Mike Lee # Ben Clerx Ben was at the top but rushed a landing that he ended having to jump his plane to avoid getting knocked. Our guys are there to play ! ;-) Congrats guys! # 1 was a young German Christian Reinecke, the only pilot to win two of the three rounds..and lead DP by 2.30 seconds. [RCSE] "Results are in -BUT what are they????"
Couple of weeks ago I got back my nearly one year old AR7000 from Horizon. I had them updated it to the "quick connect" configuration. I had read that the logger will work on older AR7000 if it's plug into the battery port. I tried it and it sort of worked. The logger recognized there was only one main receiver and one remote. But the data was nonsense. I called Horizon back about this and was told the AR7000 can be upgraded for logger operation but you specifically have to request it. I hadn't. You might call and verify this. [RCSE] "Results are in -BUT what are they????"
Hi Ryan, Thanks for the comments but :-) You had and have an opportunity to provide some real information in your post. Take a look backf...you go on about not having an RX that doesn't take a logger, you pine for an less expensive rx that does, and you mention that there was the first contest of the season in St Louis. But what readers would like to hear about from you : (and all of you sailplaners out there!) 1 Okay so you don't have a logger or an RX that can use onebut which plane are you flying your 2.4 in? Considering the context of the title (carbon fuse solutions) it might be some value to mentioning your airframe. 2 What steps did you take (in detail) to satisfy yourself that your system was safe to fly? 3 IF your ship has a carbon fuse, what did you do special to make it work ? 4 How many guys were at the contest, how many rounds, who won, what did they fly, again in the context of the title. 5 How many guys were using 2.4 systems, and were any in carbon fuses? 5 Did any have Flight Loggers? Come on guys we could all use contest results, planes flown and 2.4 info.! You all wax on about why attendance seems down? Maybe because no ones talking about the contests, sailplanes and now 2.4 fun. THINK about it, if it weren't for guys like Ira, Don, Mike, Keith recording their experiments and sharing them with the rest, we'd all be re-creating the same experiments. We're all waiting for the rest of the story :-). Gordy In a message dated 3/3/2008 9:16:35 A.M. So right now I'm one of those fellows that is "living on a prayer" as a person might say. But, to date I have no problems to report. I was at St. Louis on Saturday for thier first club contest of the year. My radios worked great but the pilot could probably still use some work. :-) I need to send in my dues to LASS for 2008. [RCSE] "Results are in -Catfish Style Perfect Defense Against Canopy Carbon Fuselages!"
Real credit goes to top TD pilot Keith F. for coming up with simplicity itself for canopy style carbon fuses. Pikes, etc. One remote, both in the nose, no mods...and the Flight Log results were never over 70 (that means next to perfect, numbers in the 300's don't affect a flight, I know I flew a different system which produced those numbers with out noticing a glitch). My main RX is forward of the servos, battery in front of that in the nose. I have two whiskers sticking out each lower side of the nose, not the bottom with short extentions shrink wrapped to the original whiskers so that I ended up with both showing 31mm outside the fuse side. The remote is two way taped to the top of the canopy, right against the spring wire that holds the canopy in., about at the half way point. Its stock whiskers are sticking thru holes in each side of the carbon canopy near the top. This set up is the real thing. One really good thing is that you can see each RX at a glance when you turn on. I noticed that there is a protocol to follow for turning on. Turn on the TX first, then the RX. IF you happen to shut off power to the RXs only, then its important to turn off the TX, then back on before turning on the RX power. Without following that protocol, the Remote RX would flash its light. So always power off the TX and power it back on before powering the RX again. Just something I noticed, no mention of it in the manual. Ground range was over 150', numbers were under 40. Walked behind three big pine trees, never getting more than 50' from the Pike, with the range test button depressed, numbers stayed under 150 but again no Holds. Can any of you guys post what kind of numbers you are seeing with a 2.4 friendly fuse plane? It rained and was cold here most of the day but got sunny and about 65 later, so I went to the clubhouse, released Little Lee from the closet we keep in stored in so that I'd have some help with my test. The kid is an amazing pilot, he was tossing his Blaster2 most of the nite. Did tests on the Don Barker Sputnik Style Defense Ngainst Nose Cone Carbon Fuses too, but with different wire etc than he used. More on that later. I am going to change out my modified system to one just like his to compare Flight Log results. Gordy **Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Re: [RCSE] "Results of Southwest Soaring" Way to Go John Diniz! Planes?
Many Thanks to all My friends at CASL for a great contest! The plane I flew in RES is Hobby Clubs Danny Design. It is a fine model and flies very well, I do recommend this model to any one wanting to try this type of model. As for the Supra observations I had both my standard model 64 ounces and my all carbon 68 ounces at the contest. The models launch and fly very well, and will be part of my quiver for the foreseeable future. At no time was I in any danger of not making my time.I am embarrassed to tell you that I missed 3 landings that should have been 25's, for some reason I was having trouble keeping the model between the lanes on landing. You can bet that I will get out and fine tune the landing mode and get these landings down for the next step in the triad. Thanks to all for a great weekend and thanks for putting up with Bear Too's first public outing. ManyThanks to Airtronics,Alberto, and Barry for helping me . RE: [RCSE] "Results of Southwest Soaring" Way to Go John Diniz!
Thanks Gordy. Couldn't buy a landing Sunday so I dropped out of the top ten. The Sharon was working good though which helps when you haven't flow it since Visalia. OK all you Mid-West guys, Dave Campbell, Ed Whyte and I were like the only ones there this year! Why would you not want to head to the sunny WARM southwest in February? Next year get your travel plans together and don't miss the SWC. Thanks again to the CASL club folks for their hard work in putting this on. I've got the raccoon eyes face after looking into a very strong Arizona sun for 3 days. George Joy and his crew did a great job running the contest. It's no small feat to host a 180 pilot meet. You need a CD, an impound director, winch master, multiple landing judges, catering company, marketing company and graphic artist for the t-shirts. The CASA volunteers were there the whole weekend hosting, and if it wasn't for their effort we wouldn't have anything to discuss. There were weather reports for Saturday predicting winds out of the east at 15-25. I wasn't too worried about the Icon, but I brought along two pounds for the Topaz. The morning seemed calm enough so I didn't ballast up for the first round, a 4 minute flight. I was the very first flight of the contest, and with a slight downwind launch I was off. I pinged off the top, turned into the wind, and proceeded to drift backwards towards California. It wasn't 25 mph up there, but it wasn't even close to what you felt on the ground. Probably about 12-13 mph, enough to stop the RES planes in their tracks. It was relatively smooth, however, and if you just flew without touching the sticks you could make your time. The landing zone was a box runway, the center square worth 25 points, the next boxes on either side worth 15 and the end boxes worth 5. The width was only about 20", so if you had any crosswind (most of the weekend) it wasn't an easy shot. Rounds 2 and 3 were part of the add-em-up with a 10 minute max. Thermals started popping but the wind had a pretty big influence. You couldn't have one ride for the full 10, you needed about 2 or 3 thermals, unless you had great eyes. Lots of off field landings. Round 3 had a killer sink cycle in it. Daryl P. had something like a 5:25, I had a 3:13...and a DQ for circling low over the pits. So much for my Open score. In all fairness we had been warned; the landing judge signed my card, but when I got back to impound George took me aside and told me I was getting zeroed for the flight. I understand the decision, coming on the heels of some spectacular vaporization of planes that landed on power lines. I don't know if you've seen or heard a smoked plane up close, but you get an idea of what cartoonist must think off when they draw something getting zapped. In one case the line was severed and still sparking. A minute later there was a second bzzzrrap that sounded like a sound check at a Pink Floyd concert. Most likely a transformer circuit blowing out on reset. Because of a slow start, the 4th round of the add-em-up was called off, so the three flights were a 23 minute task. Sunday morning there was a 5 minute task, the third round of the add-em-up, then a 8 minute flight to end the contest. The conditions Sunday were much the same but calmer in the morning. Larry Jolly won RES on his last flight, beating out Joe Nave by a landing. Both those two would have been in 3rd and 4th place in Open, so the RES planes did more than hold their own. Mike Reagan got 3rd in RES flying his AVA. He also got 9th in Open flying his Supra. Oh yeah, the AVA score was higher than the Supra score :-) Daryl won the whole thing because he was, as usual, a landing machine. Incredible control of the Insanity and great thermalling as well. Joe rallied at the end to get 2nd place. Joseph Newcomb got third flying his Espada. He is on the USA F3J Junior team. I had the pleasure of being on the same team during the Team Trials in Denver this summer, and Joseph continued his fearless flying style that most people just don't see. I mean that seriously. I don't think half the guys in the contest could see where he was flying. He has eyes like an eagle, and all his landings were done without a skeg. Try that crosswind on a runway landing. Barry Kennedy was there with lots of toys. I don't think he had many Supras left, but I hate to break the suspense. The Supras didn't win it all. [RCSE] Results from May 12 Seattle HLG contest
As always, another beautiful day in Seattle! We had light, variable winds for the first couple of rounds in the morning, and as the day progressed the winds came up from the south, but just enough to move the floaters down the field. The thermals were big in the morning but became smaller and harder to find as the day progressed. 16 pilots were out to fly and another 5 or so in the club had lame excuses (like dislocated shoulders), so we've got a really great group of HLG'ers in the area and we're always growing! Out for his first outing was Jay Allison with a Sidewinder, he managed to find a thermal or two and I hope, have a good time! We had one soldier make it in from Tri-Cities, Glenn Whitcomb, and he was happy to add his Sidewinder into the fray. The best piloting for the day was put in by Paul McKee with his own designed Fire Eagle. Paul must have been flying really high, because I don't remember seeing him more than a couple of times in the air the entire day! Phil Pearson was back in the groove and fought to second place with his own design Encore. I managed a 3rd with my Ionosphere for four rounds and flew three rounds with the Dizzy Bird prototype (59" EPP HLG). [RCSE] Results/thanksV/Standard tail question
I got a lot of response on the standard/Vtail question, thanks to every body who responded. From the responses, many said they felt Vs-w/proper set up work just fine. Also they may be the cleaner configuration aerodynamically, they are very pretty, and many times lighter(although w/todays modern construction methods it is possible to make a very light/strong standard tail plane- the Addiction being a prime example). Also it seems many of the planes flying today are from or of European design. Unlike the USA, the Europeans dont emphasize landings like we do so they tend to use Vs as the emphasis is on soaring, not landing. I agree w/this. And also during the landing phase(which makes/breaks the winners/placers in many contests) perhaps the standard tail gives one better control during this phase when plane is flying slow, using flaps, etc. So I guess its a toss up- do you want a slight advantage while soaring or while in the landing phase? For me, because of ease of set up, better control on landing, construction methods making a standard tail plane just as light as a V, I think my next plane will be cruciform. thanks again, Walter RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Results from a HLG launch analysis
If I may add some of my ignorance here. It appears to me running is a perceived advantage and not necessary additive to the extend next to 1:1. As I cannot see how the system speed at the end of a run up can be maintained while posting for the final acceleration phase. What I mean is that we can either run properly, post properly, or missing those together properly. About the methodology, I might have missed one significant point some where in the posted analysis Cris made, probably embedded in his Mathlab scrips. That deceleration will take place during the pull up phase where centrifugal force (16Gs?) adds to wing loading will come out as added induced drag and therefore deceleration, is it explicitly stated in the report? If we conceive that over shoulder acceleration is the only style, consider the disc style. YK Chan Seattle RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Results from a HLG launch analysis
Mark, When I did the analysis versus mass (and also versus throw angle) I was aware that assuming a constant throw speed wasn't realistic, however I didn't have a better alternative. I like the approach you've presented and have redone the analysis versus mass and aspect for this throw model. The website has been updated with the new results. http://www.rcmodels.com/clubs/asfcnz/ You're right up to a point in saying that lighter models will inherently launch higher using this model. The results indicate that there is actually an optimal weight for a given design, and if you go much lighter then launch height suffers badly. However, with current construction techniques I don't think you can build down to this weight and still have a model strong enough to throw at full power (at least for a 1.5m span RC HLG). Also, the optimal weight for max launch height increases with wind speed, so now we can justify ballast for HLG's on the basis of launch as well as penetration when the wind gets up. Sounds like it's best avoided totally on contest days :-) Ciao - Chris ** Chris Kaiser Auckland, NEW ZEALAND http://www.rcmodels.com/clubs/asfcnz/ From: "Chris Kaiser" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > Hi all, > > A few weeks back I finally got around to writing a computer > > model of a RC HLG launch. Re: [RCSE] Results from a HLG launch analysis
Chris, An excellent and thorough examination of the launch profile. Your formulas bear out what seems to be seen at the contests. Thank you for all your hard work! I would like to add another category: The effect of Ibuprofen. Is it best taken before or after a contest? :) JE -- Erickson Architects John R. Sun. 1st Cal Postuma 2nd Karl Miller (Club SOAR scores wood again!!!) 3rd Steve Siebenaler Weekend overall went to Ed Sleger. Very nice flying, Ed The flying was very tough each day with weather conditions constantly changing, model carnage was MASSIVE, there were also guys landing way off down wind. And it was way too much fun, but I will post all that stuff in another post! 8-) Back home in Chicago with a SEG, Jim Downers Grove, IL Member of Chicago SOAR club ICQ 6997780R/C Soaring Page at http://www.mcs.net/~bacuslab/soaring.html RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
