[biofuel] Used motor oil
Hi all, Does anyone know if it is possible to make diesel fuel out of used motor oil ? I know this is not environmental friendly, but it is there anyway, so why not use it as a fuel ? R: [biofuel] Used motor oil
Dear Franklin, I don't know if the waste engine oil mix with biodiesel. The waste engine oil is a mix of hydrocarbons of medium-high molecular weight, and contains a lot of carbonaceous matter (residues form cleaning the motor) and metal particles from motor wear. Normally this waste oil is recicle but is treat with steam, filtered and mixed with fresh oil to produce more lubrificant or filtered for burning in industrial systems, like industrial combustible for heaters. Makes me respect the strength of those little paper filters! A submicron filter or even about 2 micron plugs right away. The viscosity of the oil requires high pressure or strong vacuum. Then, you run the risk of rupturing the filter. Commercial oil recyclers use heat, acid treatment and filtration through diatomaceous earth to make their product. I've considered diluting the oil with a solvent, then centrifuging it to settle out the solids, then filtration and finally distillation to recover the solvent. That should produce a pretty good oil. But, of course, if you have to do all that, it would be best to reuse it, not try to use it for fuel. -- Jay [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Biofuel at Journey to Forever: http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel.html Biofuels list archives: http://archive.nnytech.net/index.php?list=biofuel Please do NOT send Unsubscribe messages to the list address. If you're going to use waste motor oil as fuel the first thing you want to do is filter the heck out of it. Run it through a 5 micron filter. And then run it through again. Then just run it about a gallon or so per tankful of diesel. It _will_ crud up your fuel filter, though not badly so. [biofuel] Used motor oil
Hi, I just joined the group. I'm very interested in making biodiesel, but have a question about using used motor oil as a diesel fuel. I know it wouldn't be "bio," but it seems like a good way to get rid of the oil. Can it be converted to diesel fuel using the same methods as SVO? Or is there another way? And how clean would it burn? Thanks. Re: [biofuel] Used motor oil
from http://www.recycleoil.org/ : Motor oil doesn't wear out - it just gets dirty. The oil you take to a collection center to be recycled saves energy. It can be reprocessed and used in furnaces for heat, or in power plants to generate electricity for homes, schools and businesses. It can also be made into lubricating oils that meet the same specifications as virgin motor oil through API's Engine Oil Licensing and Certification Program. Re: [biofuel] Used motor oil
The burning of used motor oil, hydraulic and transmission fluids is specific furnaces and boilers is permitted within the US. These units cannot be over a specific BTU output. www.cleanburn.com utilizes compressed air to ensure higher degrees of complete combustion. There may be others. But theirs are EPA accepted. Re: [biofuel] Used motor oil
Cornelius, Be very careful. Used motor oil contains heavy metals which can classify it as a hazardous waste. Often special permits are needed to burn it as fuel. Failure to get ALL of these permits are financially devastating. If you remove these heavy metals the waste product containing them is definately considered hazardous waste and MUST be disposed of properly. Don't try to short cut proper disposal as you will be caught and the results are financially devastating. I would suggest: 1.You contact your state and local pollution control agencies to see what the pollution control requirments are on burning waste motor oil...and what legislation may be comming down the pike. 2.You contact others who currently burn waste oil to see what thye do about permits, etc. Many asphalt plants burn waste engine oil. I would start there. Be careful. Good luck. Dana Linscott --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Let's suppose that I had a very large supply of used > motor oil. Say several > RR tank cars a week. Let's suppose that I had a very large supply of used motor oil. Say several RR tank cars a week. And let's say I had a modest chemical plant to do anything with this oil I choose. And that this is all located in the USA. What are my best options? I am already working on using some of it for boiler fuel to cut the reliance on natural gas at the plant in its 20,000,000 btu boilers. Cornelius A.
