been a great ride

2017-07-26 Thread Don H via Talk
I have been a member of this list for many many years and have received
lots of help over those years. Sadly I have moved away from Window Eyes
and am now using NVDA as well as the free transfer to Jaws. Thanks to
Doug for getting us WE users that free Jaws as I would have never paid
for Jaws. Having made the switch I know that WE has been the best
screen reader for me and it is a dam shame that Doug and crew couldn't
have done a better job of promoting their product so they could have
beaten Jaws. Thanks to all that have put up with me. I am now
unsubscribing from the list and hope to see many of you on the NVDA and
Jaws lists.

Re: Behind in times.

2017-07-16 Thread Don H via Talk
Having been a user of Window Eyes for over twenty years I still believe
that it is the best screen reader. I did take the offer for the free
JAWs and have used it some and it is OK but not great. I do find NVDA
very useable and am currently using it as my main screen reader. Only
been a few occasions when I had to fire up WE to get something done.
Have always used the DecAccess 32 software syn with WE and NVDA has a
access32 addon that makes it sound just like WE. So if you have not yet
done so give NVDA a try.

WE versus NVDA

2017-07-09 Thread Don H via Talk
I haven't used WE for the past month, using NVDA for everything. I only
use my computer for generating Word Docs, Surfing the Wed and Email.

Nvda also works pretty well with the MS Edge browser.

Finding more and more sites that work poorly with IE so I am using
Google Chrome for most surfing.

Have Jaws installed but don't use it much. Never thought there would be
a day when I wasn't using Window Eyes for all my screen reading needs.

future use of WE

2017-06-30 Thread Don H via Talk
I have been a WE user for over 20 years and always felt it was the best
screen reader. Now with no more development I have to realize that the
next major release of Win 10 just may stop WE dead in its tracks. As I
recall in the past every new release of Windows required an update to WE
to make WE work with it. So now if you plan on using WE well into the
future you are probably going to have to avoid any future major Windows
upgrades. Is that a bad thing who knows.
I am finding that NVDA does a pretty good job with very few things it
doesn't do as well as WE. I did take up VFO's offer of a free copy of
Jaws and am using it as my secondary screen reader. If you plan on
staying with a Windows based computer I don't understand why you would
not take the free copy of Jaws. Actually the Jaws SMA's are less
expensive than the WE SMA's I had purchased in the past.

Re: Jaws hot key undefined after update

2017-05-26 Thread Don H via Talk
I had changed the name of the desktop icon to just say Jaws so when I
did the update a new desktop icon for jaws was created. The old renamed
one was still there and still had the hot key in place. The new icon
added by the update did not have a hot key assigned. So I would say
that the update replaces the existing idesktop icon if it is still named
the default title.

Hi,
In JAWS settings, Insert+6 on the top numbers row, you can make the insert key
a sticky key. I would search for insert key, and the setting that you can check
will probably be there. You can do this with JAWS so the Insert is not a sticky
key on your computer for all programs like it would be if you went to ease of
access and did it there. I love that, because I can press Insert key, let up
off of that, and press other keys, and it works just like I held it down.
I hope you find that setting in the settings center of JAWS!
Have a great one!

Jaws versus WE

2017-05-23 Thread Don H via Talk
Two issues I have with JAWS after making the switch is that Jaws does
not announce the index in file explorer or in Thunderbird.
Also the copy and paste when using them within a web page work very
poorly. You can get the indication that something is selected and hit
control c to copy it and when you paste it with control V, it is not
what you expected. For example I tried to copy a amount like 51.52 and
when I pasted it it was 2.00. Never seen such errors when copy and
paste with WE or NVDA.

Re: Installing JAWS

2017-05-23 Thread Don H via Talk
I got the PO just as you have and it does not contain the activation
code. I called VFO and was told the code isn't sent until the PO

when it was they sent me a Email with my serial number and activation code.

So my recommendation is to call 1 800 444 4443 and hit the 6 key option.

JAWS

2017-05-20 Thread Don H via Talk
at least for me Jaws is proving to be more stable than Window Eyes on my

Thunderbird is having no problems. Must say however I think that WE has
a much better User interface. After the learning curve I think JAWS

Well, now all of you officially know that Window-Eyes is really dead! But,
why couldn't most of you (mostly well-educated and intelligent) folks
figure that out for yourselves?

That is by no means a silly question. Analysis of news stories, by
independent researchers, over the past 6 months reveal that smart people as
well as stupid people embrace "fake news" with equal relish. Why is that?

Also, lots of folks still believe that President Trump is "doing a good job"
in spite of the fact that nothing has been really accomplished so far and
that Trump apparently has no clue about the facts at hand.

It is an intriguing question, pondered by sociologists, why approximately
half of the population, in any given community at any given time, will
believe "crazy stuff" if asserted by a "figure of authority".

Here's a perfect example. Why did you transition now? Was there an

screen reading option? FAct is, no one actually has any need to migrate
in order to be productive. The only need for migration is in a case
where Window-eyes is not meeting your needs, in which case, you would

How do you get the home edition?

Window-Eyes will continue to run as normal so the everlock version won't have

just let me know. As for getting JAWS, just go to:

Download the version you want and activate it with your new license code.

Don,

It is mainly a licensing difference. The home version cannot be used in a
work environment. Functionality wise, they are identical. The cost of SMAs
and upgrades does cost more for the Pro version.

For the full-blown SuperNova product trial that includes everything, magnifier

You get a 30-day trial of either product. There are even options which include

It always amazes me when smart folks (like on this list) prefer a fanticy
instead of reality. There is absolutely no reason for Window-Eyes to
continue and compete with JFW. Why would they do that?

There are 3 options to check out: Narrator on Windows 10, NVDA, and
VoiceOver. So, get real and get to work.

I suppose those of you who believe that Window-Eyes will stay around also
believe that the health care bill that passed the House last week will

everybody as promised by Trump instead of leaving 24 million folks without
any health care.

"NO OFFICIAL WORD" speaking to the demise of Window-Eyes aside from a lot of
speculation on this list. In the next month or so I will be purchasing a
new LTO for Window-Eyes unless there is some sort of official word from the
powers that be! I certainly don't believe speculation is any sort of
official staement..? What am I missing here?
Just curious? Thanks And Have A Good 1! de

One idea about VFO staff not being able to anser - keep asking until you
connect with the right person. Hopefully someone will have a
conversation with VFO at the NFB or ACB conventions.

One can only keeptrack of so many lists - so - is there talk of the
future of Window-eyes on any other lists?

It is really sad that we are being kept in the dark. I am learning

Karyn,

No one on this list is capable of speaking for VFO who now owns WE. We
don't

know for sure the status of WE in the plans by VFO.

The best bet is for you to call them, get someone high up in the
organization and try to get an answer to yur questions.

Or even better: I find that I have good luck getting answers when I write
directly to the CEO of a company.

I always certify the letter. Certifying is like registering except they
don't keep the letter in the safe over night, and of course it is less
expensive.

By certifying a letter, I find that it usually reaches the CEO, or at
least

reaches someone very close to him/her.

Hello all,

I am back after an extended absence from this list. Sorry to come back
with

a bang but I need some answers.

At work I am trying to get my employer to upgrade me to the latest
version.

That's not really the issue right now. The SMA is the issue though and I
need some answers before I press them for that one.

What is the status of Window-Eyes? If it were to go away, what is the
plan

for those of us who use it? Is it even worth getting an SMA right now?

Answers would be greatly appreciated.

The future development of Window Eyes is dead. We were lucky that WE
works with the Creator update of Win 10. What we haven't seen however
is any improvement in WE to work with the Edge browser as well as any
fixes for any bugs.
NVDA is a good choice for replacing WE however I know not everyone can
use it. The only way I will switch to Jaws is if they offer some great
cheap offer for us payed users of WE. Haven't a clue what will happen
with the two SMA's I have left for WE.

Other than that, I too will be using Window Eyes for as long aspossible.
I have been slowly learning NVDA, which just does not do everything I
need, but it will have to do if Window Eyes is never updated to keep up
with the Next Windows Versions.

I figure I can keep using WE 9.5 for at least another two years, and
maybe longer. So VFO has time to do what ever it will do, and NVDA
seems to be adjusting and getting more powerful as time goes on. In two
years, NVDA could be even better.

I see no need to worry or panic at this time.

WE and Creator version of Win 10

I just installed the creator update to Windows 10. WE seems to work

NVDA however works pretty well with Edge under Creator version of Win

Re: Windows screen readers

2017-04-04 Thread Don H via Talk
Could the difference between accessibility on a I phone or I Pad and a
Mac book be that the phones and I pads are running the mobile versions
of a web site or ap and the Mac book isn't? I have been considering
purchasing a I Pad but just don't know which one to buy and wether it is
really a solution to avoid having to move to JAWS. I have been using
NVDA and it works fairly well but too has its shortcomings on some web
pages.

On 4/4/2017 8:02 AM, Steve Jacobson via Talk wrote:

Tony,

I share some of your frustrations. I had to use JAWS more during the past year
to do certain things on my job, and I was surprised at all of what I feel are
bugs in JAWS. It always seemed to me that many JAWS users felt that
Window-Eyes had a monopoly on bugs. On my job, both JAWS and Window-Eyes
worked on some older software that I used while NVDA did not work with it.
While I like my iPhone, I have found myself frustrated there with bugs as well.
The pace of change in technology, particularly web site development, is really
putting a squeeze on our access on all platforms in my opinion. I know of
people who have switched to the MAC and would never switch back, but I also
know of a few who have switched back. Also, some of your examples are partly
due to inconsistent or poor web browser support. People I have talked to who
work on accessibility have told me that if a web page is at all complicated, it
needs to be tested with all combinations of screen readers and web browsers to
know if the page will work. There is often even browser-specific code in web
sites even without accessibility. It is very possible, for example, that
Netflix is running different code when you access the very same page with a MAC
as you access with a Windows browser. This makes it very hard to determine
where problems exist.

I hope that your switch to Apple works well for you.

Steve Jacobson

Hello, Before I say anything, let me first say that I was a Jaws user for
several years before switching to Window Eyes back in 2004, and I’ve been a

certain website or something like I tunes or Netflix the first thing is they
need to fix their website. Why is it that II a person can go to Netflix on an
IOS device and using Voice Over can use netflix with no problem. Now we are
talking about a free built in screen reader as opposed to an $895 and $1195
third party screen readers? I can’t use Netflix on my PC because both Jaws and
Window eyes people have told me it isn’t accessible. However I can go to
Netflix using my I phone or my I Pad Mini and use netflix with the free screen
reader? I mean I don’t get it, support at both Jaws and WE have said it isn’t
accessible and they can’t make their screenreaders work with it, but IOS does???

Hi Sky and List

I think it is beyond the point of saving Window-Eyes.

I think what folks on this list need to do now is to contact VFO and push
for a reasonable price to transition from Window-Eyes to jaws. The number
of SMAs should be considered so perhaps those with SMAs would be given jaws
SMAs or the money paid toward their SMAs would be put toward the cost of
jaws. Everyone should be given the convention price for jaws.

Just a thought,

this list, and I support him 100 percent!

Hi Sky,

Sadly that has been the way it has been since the start. As you said,
had the rnib, cnib, american league for th blind and so on favoured
window-eyes or even given it a chance. It would not be almost extinct
at this moment in time. It does make me angry. These people are
somehow escaping accountability for their acdtions. The entire system
has been geared towards Jaws continually. Every other screen reader
has become second rate because of the power wielded withing the blind
community. It's alright us saying this but actually proving it is
another matter. If it could be proved and despite all the negativity,
it could. Then what could happen? Telling the world about how a
ruthless power hungry organisation set out to control the world of the
blind with a screen reader? If people would back us up and not just
say that is what happened without saying I can prove it. To be able to
prove it would be the icing on the cake. It would show the rotten,
evil people at jaws who abused their power and in a way forced vendors
to favour jaws above other screen readers. If enough people were
prepared to come out and back us up we would have enough to at least make

those responcible for the blind to wake up and accept responcibility.

I doubt that will ever happen as proving what we know to be true would
be difficult. Not impossible. We do have what is called a Mergers and
nonopoly commission but it too is being seen as a dog with no teeth.
Although it blocked a merger a few days ago between the two major
money markets, one in London and the other in @Germany from combining.
They have some power but it is only token gesture.

There is a proposed merger between Rupert Murdoch and Sky tv. He will
be allowed to buy it despite criticism from other media cdompanies. He
owns the majority of the world's media and his control is beyond
anything that the world has seen before. There isn't much he doesn't
own and his political power is immeanse. That is the exact same as
jaws, the rnib, cnib and other organisations for the blind.

If it could be possible for witnesses to come forward and confirm what
we are saying. That would be at least a start. We could get up a
petition expressing our opinion of the bullying from these so called
institutions for the blind. bringing them to account. It may not do
very much but at least it would rock the boat for a short time and
always be part of the history of blind peoples lives in a corrupt and

overbearing system.

I have said it before I don't know why Microsoft didn't just purchase
Window Eyes and incorporate it into windows. GW had to have been in
serious finical trouble for letting AISquared purchase them when in fact

GW Micro must have been suffering some rough financial times, because for
every person taking advantage of the offer, would drain the number of

I don't know. Never been able to make sense of it.

My experience is if you buy a cheaper model of a laptop the keyboards

Let's face it, for software to keep up with the latest security, correcting

With all the old GW people now gone, maybe WE will continue as a product

An example as how VFO works is that another product Open Book is being

Pam,

User windows are a very powerful feature that are really more or less
scripting in another form. Unfortunately everyone ignored them because
they weren't called scripting.

You can create standard windows relative to screen coordinates or
floating windows that automatically adjust their coordinates based on
several different things. You can make them speak with a hot key or
make them speak automatically or make them silent. You can tie them to
specific colors, have them watch for highlighting, or not, and on and on.

Then there are hyperactive windows. These monitor the defined area in
many different ways and can react in many different ways, e.g. say
something, speak a window, execute a hot key, load a set file, and on
and on.

I remember how everyone was so excited when scripting was introduced.
I only shook my head thinking we had a lot of that power from the
beginning through these windows. It was amazing how some jumped on
scripting while prior to its introduction everyone seemed to scream
and run every time I mentioned user windows.

You won't even see them in the control panel unless "Show advanced
options" is checked under the Help menu.

Regards,
Tom

I Miss a big big feature that is no longer in the version 9.X of
Window eyes. I use those User Windows, in a couple of Set Files I've
created for a couple of programs I use. Without those User Windows,
Window Eyes 9.x does not give me the same abilities as Window Eyes
8.X This for the way I use Window Eyes is going backwards.

This next one is a personal preference, but the way version 9.X Copies
Text on the Internet is not to my liking. It is not Windows Standard.
I find the New way to copy text a bit Funky, and I tend to get more
text than I want.

I dislike other minor issues in Version 9.X, and so it isn't a matter
of going backwards, but more of a consistency issue.

I suspect the problem I occasionally have is a Script problem, and
not so much a Window Eyes problem. From time to time, I have major
problems using Gold Wave 6 in Windows 10.

I no longer have the ability to Read to End when reading Email in Becky.

When in File Explorer, I cannot use the Send To feature because
either the Script is not reading what Drives I have available, or
Windows 10 is not displaying the Drives.

From time to time, the drives are read by Window Eyes, but only one

time.

If I want to send another file, then the Drives no longer are shown,
or read by Window Eyes 9.5.

Loss of speach

2016-12-06 Thread Don H via Talk
Running latest version of WE on a Win 10 64 bit system. When using IE

the steps that cause the issue.
I go to any Web site. I want to search for a term on the web page so I
hit ctrl shift f. I type in what I want to look for and hit enter. We
goes silent. I then have to use control alt w to restart WE to get
speech back. This happens on a regular basis but not all the time.
Anyone else experiencing this? When WE stops speaking no WE error

your SMA's will be worth absolutely nothing. I have two SMA's left and
fully expect to get nothing for them.
I only hope that when GW started this whole process that it was because

I don't think GW Micro sold its Customer's out.

Cash Flow has been a problem for a while, and GW Micro started to sell
future Upgrades to make up for the low Cash Flow. JAWS does this, and
I forget what they are called. SMA's?

Anyway, when you sell future upgrades at a discount, chances are that money is
going to pay today's Pay roll and Expenses, and when Tommorow comes, well when
tomorrow comes, and cash is still short, you start making Crazy Deals with the
Devil.

Allowing a Free version to anyone owning a copy of MS Office was a
questionable choice for GW Micro to do. Perhaps they received a token
Royalty from Microsoft for every Free Copy Registered.Hard to know,
since no one is telling why that deal with Microsoft was done, and what
GW Micro hoped to gain from it.Money of course, but how?

I enjoyed dealing with the original cast of Characters at GW Micro.
Good Mid-west values and I think they gave award winning effort when producing
their Screen Reader, and then supporting it after the sale.

I doubt if GW Micro sold us out. But, when a Company doesn't have the cash to
hire more talent to keep up with the latest Operating System, as well as
everything else GW Micro was doing.

Hard to really know what the Newest Parent Company intends. This is one of the
problems when getting swallowed by a larger fish, which then
gets swallowed by even a larger fish. Communication is bad enough even
within a small Company like GW Micro, but add a couple of extra layers and it's
a wonder that anything good gets out the door, or even done!

Customers? What Customers? We have Customers?

2016-11-22 Thread Don H via Talk
Have been a WE user since version 1.1 if my memory serves me correctly.
Seeing the writing on the wall I have began the process of learning NVDA
and I am finding it very useable.I think that GW sold us out a long
time ago and the only direction WE will now go is down. So sorry to
think and say that as I have always felt that WE was the best scren
reader out there. I guess nothing lasts forever in todays world.

I have made that decision with respect to personal computing.

Hauled out my MacBook purchased over a year ago last weekend. Got sighted
assistance to crank into proper life. And made real progress with VoiceOver. A
long way to go, but I plan to buy the book from Mosen Consulting on learning to
use Pages. Already using Mail and plan to play with Safari very soon. Ok:
Apple's customer service isn't great either, (apart from sales), but
accessibility is better than the VFO and Microsoft combination, and for me it
is a point of principle now.

Maybe I'm unreasonable. When Humanware shifted out of New Zealand (where I
live) I decided never to buy another Humanware product. And - I've stuck to
that position for almost 10 years. I did understand Humanware's business
decision, which of itself, made perfect sense. As things stand - I don't
plan to buy another VFO product. My money is worth something, and given the
abysmal customer relations we are seeing, VFO and I fundamentally disagree on
how much my customer patronage should be valued.

Although we on this list have these discussions based on an event such as the
departure of respected virtual friend, staff turnover is natural and healthy.
Staff turnover is not for me the central point. My concern is the arrogant
disregard from Corporate VFO when loyal customers start by asking reasonable
questions, based on reasonable concerns.

We should probably conclude that the list is not being monitored by senior VFO
Executives. I do not expect staff to try and defend the behaviours of the
senior executive. I expect Vice Presidents and above to lead accountability to
their customers.

VFO is a multi-national, multi-million dollar corporate, receiving Government
contracts in numerous countries. So: if people can make informed choices
regarding alternatives to what they currently have, vote with feet, dollars,
word of mouth advertising and everything else that is available.

Tell you what - if we're forced to by Shark, I may just forget about Windows
machines as much as I can. Being forced into a screenreader and culture I
don't like is like having our new president-elect take officve. I like neither
of them. Just my thoughts.--Matthew Chao

I wrote an e-mail to i...@vfo-group.com asking about this. Perhaps if
enough people did the same, they might feel it appropriate to give
some kind of info about this. It's worth a shot. What's the worst they
could do in response?

You know I feel this as well; The thing is that Since Asquared bought

So Yes I do agree the writing is on the wall for window eyes.
