The McKinley Hills is in this area:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=14.53709&lon=121.05156&zoom=16&layers=B000FTF.
Note that this is a completely different real estate development from
the
Bonifacio Global City area.

There's a couple or so coffeeshops in that area. I'm not so sure if there
are conference rooms (a la Chowking) that can be rented. Maybe I can do an
ocular inspection.

Re: [talk-ph] suggest a new mapping party event

2009-06-10 Thread Eugene Alvin Villar
One suggestion I can give is the McKinley Hills area in Taguig, south of the
American Cemetery. This is still mostly pristine unmapped area in OSM and
Google Map Maker without any updated satellite imagery in Yahoo! or Google
(at least for their default base imagery [the historical imagery collection
that is available through Google Earth has more newer imagery]).

While a couple of experienced mappers can do this area in one morning (and
I'm actually tempted to go to the side streets having only driven through
the main road before), I think having a Mapping Party in this area with
media, bloggers, and OSM newbies will provide a good educational experience.
Maybe only 3 hours of surveying then 3 more hours of presentations,
lectures, and hands-on editing is needed.

use the party render script:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Party_render

I had problems with python 2.6, so I used 2.5 on ubuntu 9.04. I
suggest you try the render.py to tweak your parameters before using
video.py.

Correction pala dito, I used ogr2ogr utility to convert shapefile (the
original shapefile was in UTM Z51) to gpx.

You can create a local webmapservice (wms) and load any data in josm.
But that's pretty much complicated for me (requires apache, mapserver,
gdal, etc). Did it before with the QC
streets import.

It's easier to just get the latest landsat data, edit in your favorite
GIS app and then load to JOSM or the shp2poly.py script.

The free downloadable LANDSAT offers a lot possibilities for areas
with very little coverage.
We can add the latest landcover (especially forest ) of the
Philippines (possibly my next big OSM project).

As to eds, request for tutorial, I can either write something or let's
just have a demo session over beer ;)

PS: my typing maybe crappy since I am on an internet shop with a
failing keyboard.

The problem with the default Landsat is the extensive cloudcover, so I
downloaded a newer image (free and public domain) taken March 2009.

This image have fewer clouds but the edges (which Caliraya was
located) has data gaps (nasira last 2002 yung satellite).
I digitized the shoreline in QGIS (FOSS gis app) and converted the
shapefile to gpx using GPSbabel (FOSS GPS data converter).
Load in JOSM edited unconnected nodes, added more detail along the
previous image gaps. Add tags:
natural=water
name=
source=

Add a multipolygon relation for islands. Upload.

A lot more improvement is needed (mapping party) but it should look
better by the next render.

Good night!

LBC Express worked pretty well last time. It was about 120 Pesos, which I
thought was a pretty good deal.

Davao maybe too costly for you guys but if anyone from north could come
down south it would be great. We're brewing a mapping party in the end
of June or 1st week of July. As of now we have three teams to map Toril,
Mintal and Buhangin areas. George (smackcode) is wondering if we could
borrow one GPStogo just for a week for the mapping party in Davao. And
our next plan is to map the entire Samal Island.

mapping... nakaka-adik.

Lake Caliraya is highly irregular. It's basically a man-made lake created by
damming a valley. So there's a lot of narrow spots in there. I'm not so sure
if bancas can readily go up along those narrow branches.

Then again, I haven't been to the place. Hehehe.

Is this the lakes?
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=14.2711&lon=121.5494&zoom=14&layers=B000FTF

Hmm. Looks like a tough one:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=14.302146,121.520977&spn=0.069697,0.111666&t=h&z=14

The shoreline looks very complicated. I found some cloud-free landsat
data around the area (March 2009) that might be useful. I'll try to
download and trace the approximate shoreline and then we can verify on
the ground and add resort details.

What ya think?

Yes, I believe it can be done in a day even with one boat only. But 2 or 3
boats will give us more time to have a picnic time. I am also thinking of
challenging some members of waypoints.ph if they are interested in kayaking
the shores and get to "claim" that they were the first to map the lake by
kayak (a marathon of sorts). btw, what is the best way to give credits to

This may not be a mapping party, but more of a mapping challenge ...

I have long wondered if anybody will be interested in mapping the actual
shores of Caliraya and Lumot lakes by GPS on a boat or kayak. We can hire
maybe 2 or 3 boats to go around the lake along the shore then take
tracklogs. We can also map the resorts, parks and fishing grounds in the
area. Then, just so it can be said that it is a "party" ... we can have a

... just a suggestion. what think?
