Re: [TMIC] Shots and cramps
Hi Mike in Marysville, WA - this is Linda in rainy, soggy, mold and mildewing, need life jackets and a boat Bothell, WA- We are practically neighbors! I'm sorry I can't answer your questions regarding the cramping; however I have also heard that quinine water does help. And yes, other than that SEAHAWKS DO RULE Hugs, Linda in Bothell, WA -- Original message -- From: "Mike & Jill Hammond" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Well, it has been a while since I have posted anything. I do lurk and read a lot of the postings. I have to weigh in on one subject and ask a question aboput something totally different. First, while I did not have a flu shot before I came down with TM, I had just recently completed a Hepatitis B series. At that time the doctor told me that this may have also been a possibility. I am not sure what it was, but after a lot of reading about injections of different types, and especially the contents of a flu shot, I thought that I would rather get the flu than the flu shot. The one flu shot I did get several years before TM made me sick. My question concerns cramps. I have been reading some of the postings and still have questions. For some time now I have been having cramps in my feet, mostly at night. The cramps usually are in the ball of the feet. These cramps range from annoying, to feeling like someone dropped an anvil on my foot. At times, the only relief I get is by putting pressure in the opposite direction from the way the cramp seems to want to pull the feet muscles. Has anyone else experienced something like this, and if so, what have you done for it. I still have cramps in various locations in my body and when they get too bad for me I take baclofen for 3 to 5 days and they subside. Sometimes I can go a month or more without taking baclofen and sometimes it may be several times in a month. Sometime back I posted a question asking if anyone used quinine water to help with cramps and I did not receive ! any feedback. I feel that it does help a little. Mike in Marysville, Washington where it is wet, damp, rainy, soggy, mossy, and miserable. Othe than that, SEAHAWKS RULE!!!

Re: [TMIC] RE: Soc. Security/ SSDI
I made the mistake of NOT applying for SSDI. Born in 1934, I had not quite reached 63 when I was disabled. I had already retired from my career with continuing good health insurance and had a job in a hobby shop. I was planning to start drawing my Social Security a year later. I reasoned that there was little to be gained with SSDI. I was WRONG. Drawing SS at 64 meant 70% benefits for the rest of my life and Betty's. SSDI would have given me full SS benefits. As an engineering manager, I had been well paid. That 30% for life was BIG bucks. Alton, who should be drop-kicked across the planet p.s. Every financial decision I have ever made has been dumb.
Re: [TMIC] Vision correction.
My glasses (Bifocals) don't help. With Devic's, often patients go completely blind in at least one eye, with diminished vision in the other, if not total blindness in that eye also. Some patients do regain a bit of their vision, though, so I am going to continue to hope for the best. My son is moving home to stay with me until I move in april. Bless his heart. I'm starting to have a really difficult time getting around and with my sight so messed up, I'm fearful of being alone. I hate this disease. :-( Grace
Re: [TMIC] Vision
I will always remember the weekend I realized I couldn't read with my 44 year old eyes. I couldn't see anything close up. It had nothing to do with the TM that hit me at 53. To my horror my first glasses were bifocals a true sign of old age! I had my eyes tested since TM and there was no change in my RX. I was happy to hear that the TM and meds hadn't caused any damage to my eyes. You're right Bill, we need regular check ups, but it's so easy to put them off. Grace can your vision be corrected with glasses or is that too simple? Re: [TMIC] new member
Hi there Dennis, So glad that you've found the list. As Linda said in her post, none of us have all the answers (Least of all me.) but we're always here to offer support. I found this list while I waa still in the physical rehab hospital, and it's been a Godsend. This is the only place that I can go to where the people really do understand the implications of living with things like TM, MS, or in my case Devic's. I know that you'll find all of the support that you need, and you'll make a lot of new, solid friendships here, too. Grace
Re: [TMIC] Vision
Hi Bill, You have a lot to offer this special group - I guess this note is just to encourage you to post more often - even just to say hi. We all try to be supportive of each other - none of us have all the answers to anything. And I certainly am one of those! Because who knows about this disease and what course it might take?? Not even the doctors most of the time. But your support means so much to all of us. Looking to hear more from you!! [TMIC] Flu shot
I did receive a flu shot on Oct. 31, 2002.(had gotten them for years)..in fact my husband got one along with me, at the same time,by our PCP..14 days later, (Nov 13 2002)...I woke up with my feet asleep, and a couple hours later, I was paralyzed from my waist down.First diagnosed at Guillain BarreI had been under a great deal of stress, but otherwise felt fine, had a terrible back ache 2 days prior to losing feeling...3 questions the doctors (all gazillion of them) asked me and all in the same order with all the same response...1. Have you been sick? No2. Have you been around anyone that was sick? No3. Did you get a flu shot? yes Then they all looked up from writing and said "when"? Do you Yahoo!? Hi! I was hit with TM May 01 (T5) and then another cervical attack that August. I recovered pretty well and later was told there was no harm in getting a flu shot. I had a wicked attack one month after the shot. My lesions are extensive and rehabbing again was hard. So, no more flu shots for me ever again! Cindy in Kansas City From: "C E" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], tmic-list@eskimo.com Subject: RE: [TMIC] RE:FLU SHOT \ PLEASE READ Date: Wed, 01 Feb 2006 21:18:55 -0600 Hi Jeff and All, This is everything I can remember: I received a flu shot either Oct or Nov, 2004, and I had a Mantuoux (TB) test in Feb 2005. I believe the TB test is given with a live virus, but not positive. I work in a hospital which is why I received the TB test, it's mandatory. Sometime between March and June I remember telling my co-worker that I needed a new chair, because my butt was going numb and we laughed about it. I remember commenting on it more than once, but always brushed it off to needing to lose weight. I had a cold mid April 2005, missed 1/2 day of work and layed around on the weeked. One afternoon Mid June I layed down for a nap and 45 minutes later when I got up my right leg was tingling as if it were asleep from my knee down to my toes. Within 30 minutes the tingling moved up my leg to my thigh. My duaghter, a nurse, and I both thought I probably had a pinched nerve from beding over the bath tub to bathe my granddaughter. The next morning I woke up and had no use of my right leg. I only knew it was there because of the pins and needles feeling in it. Recap: Flu shot - fall 2004 TB test - Feb 2005 cold - April 2005 TM - June 2005 Carol from Culver, T10
[TMIC] Vision
Good morning folks, Grace, I so hope your vision does improve after finishing the IV Solumedrol. Not to discourage you but my eyesight did just the opposite. Let me say I really have no idea what caused it but I can't help but wonder if the steroids or other medication caused mine to deteriorate. I have worn glasses most of my life and have always tried to have an eye exam ever couple of years if there were no problems. Because of the TM I had not has one for 3 years and I'm sure the only reason I thought to go now was my eyesight had gotten so bad I could hardly see to drive. I could not see TV very well from across the room. When I had the exam a month ago, my eyesight was 20/80. The legal limit to drive in GA is 20/80. Boy, what a difference new glasses has made. I did not write this to discourage you, I wrote it to encourage you to have your eyes checked on a regular basis. Maybe if I had gotten mine checked sooner they would not be this bad. Also hello to everyone. I still don't post alot because all of you have much more wisdom that I do about TM. But I read the posts everyday and more important than that, my wife reads them everyday. I think reading them has helped her to understand TM more and therefore she understand what is happening with me when I tell her some new symptom has popped up. Thanks to all of you. Bill in South GA
