Re: [TMIC] improvement

2007-06-29 Thread JHarper33
I think I probably had the biggest or most dramatic improvements within the
first six months, but there has been slow and steady improvement ever since
(11 1/2 years later). Just recently I was in charge of a ladies' luncheon at
church that, in previous years, knocked me out for the rest of the weekend,
but this year I had a bunch of errands to do afterward and thought I was going
to "crash" once I ever got still -- I was amazed that the fatigue levels were
so much better when that's one thing that has carried on long-term. However,
walking around Wal-Mart or the mall does me in -- not only all the walking,
but I get really hot in both places, and that just saps my energy.

[TMIC] Comfortable shoes

2007-06-29 Thread Regina Rummel
Some of the physical therapists I work out with wear Keen shoes. They swear by
them. I noticed that the front is wide and round which would give toes lots of
room to breathe. I don't drive and have to wait for my daughter to take me to
the store that carries them. In the meantime, I wondered if any of you are
wearing that brand, or heard of Keen shoes.

[TMIC] Carpal Tunnel questions

2007-06-29 Thread Kevin Wolfthal

Dear Friends,

Place this under the 'feel like tearing your hair out' category.

Last year I had a neurologist and an orthopedist tell me I
have carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands. This was after
having MRI's and EMG's.

Then I went to a hand surgeon. He sent me for another
EMG because my (former) neurologist 'lost' the EMG
results. (I noticed they still accepted the $1200.00
for the EMG from my insurance, who I reported
them to but said they can do nothing).

The new EMG apparently shows nerve problms
in many nerves in my arms, so the hand surgeon
doesn't think it's CTS anymore and can't help me.
So now I have to start over with new tests, new
neurologist...

I just read that one of my BP meds, metoprolol,
can cause numbness in the hands as a side effect.
I'm having a physical on Monday and will ask
about this.

I know I've asked about carpal tunnel syndrome before,
so please forgive me for asking again. If anyone has
had CTS, would you mind relating your experience
from symptoms to diagnosis and correction? Were
you ever told that other nerves in your arms were
affected?

Thanks all,
Kevin

They are extremely comfortable! I have actually asked to be a

So sorry about the wheelchair fiasco! But glad you had a good time. I've
been a little afraid to try crocs because my balance is such a problem

Hello all,

I'm back from a great time with the grandchildren in Orlando.
It was touch and go for the first day or two. We were all tired from
the cross country flight, arriving past midnight and the airlines lost
my wheelchair, yet again. We had a very tight connection, only 40
minutes, so I didn't have them gate check/retrieve it for me in Denver
where we connected, but asked them to check it all the way through to
Orlando. When we arrived in Orlando, the chair was left in Denver.
That took almost 2 hours to figure out, so by the time we got into our
rental car, with an airline wheelchair, it was 3am. Then, after
checking into our resort, almost 4am before we could crawl into bed. At
least our body clocks were on west coast time, so not too bad.

The next day I was eager to hit Disney's Wild Animal Park, so we
arrived around noon to a crowd of people and a lot of heat and humidity.
My husband was cranky, as well as the youngest grandson. Not the best
way to start a vacation, but it got better from there. We really
enjoyed spending the time with them, and think they did too. We are all
very lucky people to have each other and to be able to spend special
time together. We're looking forward to some more time this summer, as
we have to work around the school calendar. I've grown to hate that
darned calendar.

I bought some "croc type" shoes while away, and just love them.
They are so comfy and lightweight. Like walking on air, no
weight at all to them. I also wore them in the swim pool since my feet
are very sensitive to the pressure on the bottom of the pool. The shoes
made the difference, and I even managed to do some "faux swimming" in
them. I never really learned how to swim, and now don't have the leg
strength to do so properly. I have a lousy kick, but even with the
shoes on, it didn't feel any different. I highly recommend them. I
bought a generic brand, Sahara, for $12 in Orlando. I was chicken and
got the navy ones, but I think I'll invest in a colorful one next. My
left foot is the hottest, and it does feel a bit hot and sticky on the
bottom only. It's definately tolerable though, and the little nubby
things on the sole don't bother at all. I cannot wear the strap though,
as the fastener irritates my ankle.

It looks like the list has been pretty busy, so it'll take me a
while till I can get through our old emails.

Hugs to all,

I like your idea of handling things. The thing is, I was giving baths daily

coming at 2:00pm to talk about their home health to me. I should tell them -
this one is on your hospital. Natalie M.

"Betadine" after each use, then wrap them in a sterile gauze pad, and put them
in saran wrap or something of that nature. Suggest to your husband, just
suggest, that he grab someone by the throat and hang them out a window till he
gets what he wants. Just my way of doing things, but it does get results.

  Gunny,
I told my husband I wanted to see what they looked like and he came up w/ a
brillant idea. His phone camera. He said let's give it a try. 2 photos from
it and I couldn't believe what they had done to me. Now, they want to be my
home health - nope.
My home health I was using would only give me a catether to reuse after my
caths from my cathing company in Tulsa ran out. I told them no, I'm not using
a reusable catheter. I said Medicare told me I could use my cathing company
still who supplies me w/ sterile throw away caths (all in one bag system) but
they would not pay them for any catheters. The refused to be my home health
provider anymore and had been off and on for 4 years. My home health nurse had
to call me in the hospital and tell me she was so sorry the chiefs had made
this decision and she didn't want me to hear it from anyone and my aide is so
upset about it all anyway. I think I call the medical board and tell them how
they do business. Thanks, Natalie M.

  Hi there,
Well, I had to go back to the hospital after only 1 day at home. Once again
for excruiating pain from my feet to my hips. This has been some of the worse
pain I've ever had. Then, after staying there 2 weeks, I got 2 bedsores and
I've never, never had any. I was at Baylor Rehab. for 7 weeks and never got
one, because they would turn me at night. I am so furious at them. Now, they
want to be my home health provider. Geez. My husband and I can take care of
me - I'm sick of hospital people right now. How's everyone? I'm sitting up
now in my chair as I have to be ready to go to Little Rock (one hour away) to
see my urologist. Later, Natalie M.

2007-06-29 Thread natalie mizenko
Katherine,
Thanks for the info. Do you still take the Echinacea & vitamins? I have
never used marijana for the pain. Actually, don't have access to any - if I
did- I think I would try anything.

It kills my husband to see me in such pain and have to leave home time and
time again for 20 years to go to the hospital, as in 1987 I was injured in a
car wreck and lived w/ 3 cracked discs before I went to the world's largest
spinal clinic for them to find out what I had. Chronic to severe pain many
times had already set in; even after surgeries, still the pain remained.
Finally, many years later it got better and then I started having back pain;
many steriod shots; burning of nerves helped L4/L5; but then I woke up one
morning feeling like I had a watermelon in my rectum. My back was hurting
terribly also. My spinal surgeon in Little Rock, an hour from here diagnosed
me w/ a herniated disc at L5/S1; after lst surgery I developed instantly Cauda
Equina Syndrome, and had a neurogenic bladder; learned to cath then; and still
the rectal pain progressed to the front of my pelvic floor. I had 2 other back
surgeries in same area and finally the 3rd one he had to fuse it.
He couldn't cut it down anymore. Finally, life for my husband and I looked
bright for once in 20 years and out of the blue I fell one night on the
bathroom floor returning to bed and could not walk on one of my legs (not the
leg I feel on - strange). Within days, I was hospitalized in the ER in L.R.
and saw my spinal doc. He said it's not your fusion Natalie, even tho it
shifted just a little - something else is going on. I went to a terrible rehab
for 2 weeks while he was on vacation and went back in to the hosp. when he
returned. Had to having immediate surgery to have my dorsal column stimulator
removed that was 14 years old, so I could undergo an MRI. Results my dr.
thought I had Transverse Myelitis, by now both legs were paralyzed. A
Neurologist there thought I'd had a stroke. Baylor Rehab. did 2 MRI's while I
was there and both confirmed it as Transverse Myelitis. Back to severe pain
and now being paralyzed. I handle it well when my pain is not at a 8 to
10 or beyond. My husband doesn't. I asked him last night why is he so quick
to cuss anymore over small things that happen like when I'm getting into my
showever chair or toilet chair like last night my shoe feel off and he said the
GD word. I said I don't like you saying those things. He said I'm not saying
them to you - it is to what is going on at the moment. Finally, he looked
right into my eyes and said "I am so angry that you are in the shape you are &
I can't do anything to reverse it." So, I get mad now on little things easy
Natalie. It touched me greatly. However, I told him; you have to get over the
anger in order to go on with happiness in our lives. Making bright days
brighter and don't recall the bad days. They are gone. Forget them as you
can. Sorry for the novel. Natalie

the_anti_fan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi, Natalie-
I have experienced the same type of pain in which you described. I was
stricken with TM in October, 1998. Western medicine has its' limitations. I
began to utilize 'alternative' parishioners to manage pain. I had started a
business that was doing well, in home pet care, two years prior to the onset of
TM. I had no family to fall back on and I HAD to get better and back on my
feet. Accupuncture has been a TREMENDOUS help to me regarding pain. I also
tried golden seal and Echinacea along with really good (not from a drug store)
vitamins with trace minerals) and even marijuana all made a significant
difference in pain management. Accupuncture is tremendous.

Hang tough. and know that you are not alone.
