Today we will have my daughter Pam's memorial service.

I would like to thank you for all thought and prayers. It brings comfort to
me knowing others are thinking of my family.

I have five children and Pam was the middle child. My youngest son said "now
there is no middle".

Three of the children are out of sorts with the others so we are just like
any other stressed out normal dysfunctional family.

Like John Lennon said:"LIFE IS WHAT HAPPENS WHILE YOU ARE BUSY MAKING PLANS"
so live each day fully.

I believe in GOD and Heaven and she will be watching for us. Pam is in a
better place. See you in God's time.

[TMIC] Promoting Remyelination in Humans

2010-12-09 Thread Akua
Greetings!

As you might imagine, we've heard from many of you about the latest
news from the University of Edinburgh concerning stem cells and
myelin repair. I'd like to take this opportunity to respond
personally to those queries.

First, MRF-funded scientists have identified several targets that
demonstrate similar potential benefit, including some that utilize
stem cells.

Second, the operative language in the reports from Edinburgh is that
this work has been demonstrated in animal models. In fact, all of the
work, including our own to date, has made use of one or more animal
models.

But we also know that historically, in MS, animal studies have
translated poorly when advanced to humans.

Today there are no available tests to measure remyelination in
humans. The absence of these tools is a critical, rate-limiting step
to moving new discoveries safely into the clinic. That's why the
current MRF research plan includes a study that we hope will lead to
answering this question. The ability to demonstrate and measure
remyelination in human tissue will benefit all myelin repair
research. And, once developed, we hope to make these tools available
to others who wish to further test whether their own work in animal
models will also work in human cells.

We applaud the work that is being done in Edinburgh and wish the best
for all who are working toward solutions. We also want to assure you
that your support is underwriting the most comprehensive and
accelerated work in myelin repair for MS. We remain grateful for that
support.

Best regards,

Scott Johnson

[TMIC] Legs

2010-12-09 Thread Akua

Hi Kevin!

Glad to read that you are pushing on, pushing through!

At long last I have PT at home and there's a difference.
I feel intense tingling in my feet. She said I have great
range of motion.

Every day i being with a stretch, touching toes, rubbing my feet,
resting my head on my knees. I pull my legs up-- this is getting
harder and harder as they get heavier and heavier, but still
I do this.

I want to have everything as limber as possible to mitigate
the effects of unuse for the hope of reconnection.

Pre TM I did yoga and this old practice has stood me in good stead.
I'm reminded by writing this to try and do it again, to manualy
move my legs into some positions.

The challenge is getting on my stomach in the hospital bed...
there's not quite enough room for me to roll over,
it would be easier if I had my old double, otoh, I need a bed
i can raise and lower, to get in and out of it.

Yes this cold is brutal, I put on another layer, just to open the
door and grab

the mail.

Anyway, did your PT talk about stretching and give you exercises
between visits?

Cheers,
Akua

I'm still having contracture in both legs. It is painful when I try
to straighten my legs more
than about 60 degrees, my knees just won't allow them to straighten
any further

I recently completed about 3 months of painful physical therapy at
home, and now

I am in the process of trying to arrange wheelchair transport to an outpatient
PT group. The 20 degree weather is not helping, but I have to do this.

Years of being sedentary/bedridden has caused this according to the
PT. I guess

I just gave up when my Mom got sick and passed, but I'm trying the best I can.

Best to all,
Kevin

i guess that's good news.

the pain levels are really up though.

other Dr upped my neuronton from 3 400mg per day to 3 800mg per day to see if
that would help.

neuro backed my backlofen from 5 20mg per day to 4 20mg per day to see if it
would help me to stop stumbling so much.

all guesswork.

RE: [TMIC] Knee Replacement

2010-12-09 Thread Patricia Cooley
Linda, my husband went through the same in 2006. His recovery mirrors your
husband. He did so well that he was released from P.T. as he recovered so
rapidly that Medicare said he was 100% and would not pay for any more P.T.
He was driving in about 6 weeks. He now wishes he had done it 5-10 years
before and he lived with such pain for years.

I am glad your husband's recovery is going so well. I will also be happy to
answer any questions.

Subject: [TMIC] Knee Replacement

My husband had both knees replaced 6 weeks ago. He spent 3 weeks in the
hospital with the last 2 weeks on an "Acute Rehab Unit" that was wonderful.
The first week he had a constant motion machine on his knees to keep the
muscles limber & to bend his knees. About every 2 days they increased the
angle of the machine to bend the knees a little more. His pain was
controlled with oral pain meds & ice packs. Physical Therapy was started
the second day post-op & he was up in a chair. In the rehab unit the 2nd &
3rd weeks, he had 3 hours of PT in the AM & another 3 hours in the
afternoon. After the 2nd week, he was walking with a walker, showering with
assistance, & taking meals in a common dining room. This rehab was very
intense, but really helped. At home now he recieves PT three times a week.
After 1 week home he is now walking with a cane & even by himself. The
first 2 weeks were the hardest, but once he was home improvement has really
been fast and home health will probably only come another 2-4 weeks. Hope
this answers some of your questions. My husband has COPD & has done well.
He was in such pain before the surgery (bone on bone in both knees) & he is
very glad he had the surgery. Any questions I would try to answer.

Kevin I suppose all we can do is all we can do. I hate the problems that i not

My own paranoia leads me to thoughts of "oh no! is that what I am heading for!"
but thats just thoughts and I suppose we all fight our own thoughts.

I hate to see others in struggles and pain of any sort.

nothing but positive thoughts towards you!

for those that have fought and have regained this or that is always an
