Sounds good. Will the messages at this address be archived somewhere or would
that cost something? Every now and then I still search the archives for a

I did see that he had passed away mentioned on a Facebook page a while
back. I was so sorry to hear of it. I do remember him participating here in
the past. I can only imagine what you are going through - it was hard to
lose my mother several years ago, but I think to lose a son or daughter
would be that much harder because we expect that they'll outlive us. I pray
for God's grace and comfort for you.

Re: [TMIC] SSDI - Doc

2014-01-04 Thread Barbara H.
There used to be - I was poking around the site just now and couldn't find
it. A man named Roger (I can't remember his last name) who went by Doc on
here before he passed away made up a list of very specific tips for
applying.

There is a section on the forum for dealing with disability, and I found
this link there - not sure if it is Doc's but it looks helpful:
http://myelitis.org/resources/disabilityapp.htm

Something else that's odd - I don't see any link to the TMIC on the TMA web
site. There is a link for individual state support groups and the message
board, or forum, at myelitis.org/forum, but not this list.

[TMIC] End of birthday lists

2013-12-31 Thread Barbara H.
Hello all,

Some of you may remember how the birthday lists started many years ago.
Someone found an online site that would send e-cards to others as a support
for a charity, so many of us sent in our names and birthdays so as to use
the site to raise funds for the TMA. Not surprisingly, the site died after
a while. A girl on the TMIC named Carrie and I had accumulated the birthday
names and lists, and after she left the list, I continued to send them out
once a month.

I've decided to stop doing so, for a number of reasons.

1) Not many people are here any more. Many are on Facebook and it is easy
to send birthday greetings there.

2) I don't think many (if any) people use the birthday list to send
individual greetings to anyone on it. (A few of you have faithfully sent
happy birthdays on TMIC to those celebrating each month as a whole, and I
have appreciated that.)

3) Since all mail that goes through the TMIC is archived online, I have
wondered if it is a problem to have lists of names and e-mails there, if
that increases anyone's spam content.

4) I have been sending out individual birthday greetings to everyone on the
list, and more and more of them are returned to me because the address is
no longer active.

5) For those who are no longer on the TMIC, I don't know if they welcome
the birthday greetings or if they don't want me to "bug" them any more.

So for all of those reasons, plus the amount of time involved, I have
decided to stop sending the birthday lists out each month. I've just
finished updating it with the latest information I have - if anyone else
wants to take it over, I'll be happy to send you the list.

I'm still here on the TMIC and plan to continue to be. I wish all of you a
very happy and healthy 2014.

Love,

Barbara H.

The TMIC email address is the same as it always has been. Only the web site
address is changed, and that only affects people here if they are looking info
up in the web site or looking through the archives. Nothing has changed in the

Re: [TMIC] RE: Books & Movies

2013-07-15 Thread Barbara H.
If you look people up on Goodreads.com, you can peruse what they've been
reading. One of my recent favorites is Unbroken by Lauren Hillenbrand. Also
the Mitford series by Jan Karon (At Home in Mitford is the first).

My kids are big into the Marvel comics films, so we've enjoyed the Iron Man
films, The Avengers, Captain America, etc. They have a lot of classic
English love stories on Netflix: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and
Sensibility, Wives and Daughters, Emma, North and South (the British one
based on the book by Elizabeth Gaskell, not the one based in America. The
book was great as well).

I don't watch or read many mysteries, but we have watched many TV shows
that are based on Mysteries: Castle, Chuck, White Collar. They have those
on Netflix as well, possibly on Hulu too.

Hi Janice,

Mine did not start out with severe pain. It started with a hard to define,
numb but not totally numb feeling in my left arm which then spread to my
legs. It progressed to pretty painful banding around the affected arm, like
a too-tight blood pressure cuff. That gradually went away. The only pain I
have now is occasional muscle spasms in my back.

2013-05-20 Thread Barbara H.
In the guidelines for the TMIC on the TMIC web site (posted here:
http://myelitis.org/tmic/#guidelines) it specifically says "Please *do
not*forward or post long jokes or fictional stories." It would be
better to
forward this kind of thing just to people whose e-mail addresses you have
whom you think might really want it.

Plus you have to remember that everything that goes through the TMIC is
archived online, so all those e-mail addresses you copied in your forward
are now public.

You're still coming through to the list. Did you have to resubscribe? I've
been dropped various times over the years for unknown reasons and had to
resubscribe, I assume just due to a glitch. One other idea is that perhaps
your account has been hacked and someone has been sending out e-mails under
your name - you might want to change your e-mail account password just in
case.

Re: [TMIC] neurologist

2013-01-18 Thread Barbara H.
I think we do so by praying as we read, for God to help us understand, then
by reading verses in context rather than stringing isolated verses
together. The church I went to as a teenager strongly advocated reading the
Bible through, and that has been the biggest help to me. There are seeming
opposites in the Bible that hold each other in balance, and a lot of error
comes in when people tip one way or the other.

Re: [TMIC] neurologist

2013-01-18 Thread Barbara H.
That is maddeningly ridiculous and sounds more like the idea of karma. Job
was afflicted even though God Himself said he had done nothing wrong. In
John 9:1-4 it says, "As [Jesus] passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And
his disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that
he was born blind?' Jesus answered, 'It was not that this man sinned, or
his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.'"

I once wrote up an extensive list of reasons the Bible gives for suffering:

Re: [TMIC] neurologist

2013-01-17 Thread Barbara H.
I think it depends on one's needs. I've had TM for 17 years and haven't
seen a neurologist in about 14 years. I got to an acceptable plateau (can
walk and pretty well function as a homemaker and volunteer, have some
issues with fatigue, balance, and muscle spasms. I don't think I could hold
down a job for various reasons, but I've been able to raise my children,
keep my home, and help out in various areas at church and my kids' schools).
I am not on any TM-related medications, so when we moved to another state,
I didn't seek out a new neuro. It helped that my PCP was knowledgeable
about TM and willing to refer me to anyone I wanted to see -- it was
through him I was referred to a urologist for problems in that realm. If I
had problems that only a neuro could help with or was on certain
medications that it would be best for him to monitor, I'd see one, and I'd
encourage anyone with any of those needs to keep seeing one, but otherwise
there is no need to see him every year just to hear that everything is the
same, which is about where we were when I last saw him. Of course, if new
problems or questions crop up, I wouldn't hesitate to seek one out.

My doctor encouraged something called double voiding - going to the bathroom,
then coming back in a few minutes to go again. It's frustrating sometimes not
to be able to get it all done at once, but it helps.

Still here! :-) It seems like the list here goes pretty quiet for several

[TMIC] Exercising with limited mobility

2012-04-10 Thread Barbara H.
I saw this link today and thought some of you might be interested. I've
been reading SparkPeople.com for a while now and getting their daily
e-mails, and one recent one had this link to exercises for those with
limited mobility:

http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/lifestyle_center_detail.asp?id=19

I haven't looked into it much more than a quick perusal yet, but I was
interested because when I've tried different workout DVDs or systems, I've
haven't found any that I can do all of (I can walk but can't run, am
wobbly, have balance problems, and my knees and ankles give out). I've
found a couple of walking DVDs that are helpful (that show different
stretches and steps to break up the monotony) and can do some of the
exercises on the Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout for the Kinect game system,
but at several points have to adapt somehow because I can't follow the
routine at points.

I was exercising regularly for the first time in ages last year but injured
my back just before Thanksgiving, and haven't gotten back into a routine.
That's one thing I discovered: exercising helped some muscles immensely but
also seemed to set off muscle spasms in my back. It also helped increased
stamina and energy levels, so I need to get back into it and find exercises
I can do.

Anyway -- I want to look into these more but thought I'd go ahead and pass
them along.

I add to the birthday list "Please send any *additions* or corrections to

If you've sent it before and I missed it, my apologies. But I'd be happy to

Re: [TMIC] gone to facebook

2011-08-30 Thread Barbara H.
I'm still here, too. I don't comment as much -- if someone else has already
said what I might have said, then I don't usually chime in. The TMIC as a
whole is not nearly as active as it was when I first joined back some...oh,
14-15 years ago. I'm coming up on my 16th "anniversary" with TM on Sept. 1.
I think one reason is that there is a lot of information available online
now, and that's a good thing. When I first contracted TM, I didn't have a
computer, and the local library had a two-page spread in one medical book,
and that was it. TM was the first thing I searched for when we did get a
computer, and this group was the first concrete link I found. It was a
godsend, really, to have somewhere to post questions and compare notes. But
now that so much more information is online, people may be getting their
questions answered in their own research.

And I think, too, for some of us who have been here a while, we've gotten
our basic questions answered (even if the answer in some cases is that there
is no known answer), so there's not as much to talk about. The main reason I
stay on now is to be of help if anyone else has a question or just needs
some empathy and support.

Too, as Roger said, some have gone on to other means of communication now. I
think the TM message board or bulletin board was pretty active for a while,
and now Facebook is where many people go to interact online. I was in the
group there for a while, but left -- the 50+ messages Bobby Jim referred to
were just too much for me. When I first came online, TMIC was about the only
thing I "did" online besides an occasional e-mail to family who had e-mail.
But now nearly everybody has e-mail, many friends are on Facebook, I've
found several blogs I read as well as news and entertainment -- now I have
to be careful not to let computer time eat up too much of my day. And I
don't know, but I think that may be the biggest reason some folks aren't as
active.

When I send out birthday greetings, if an e-mail bounces back to me, I'll
make a note of it so I don't post that non-working e-mail again next time,
but I don't delete the name in case they come back. It is sad every month to
see that there are almost as many inactive names there as there are active
now. I miss hearing from some of those folks and wonder how they are.

But I truly think as long as there is a TMIC, there will be some of us here.
We just need to wave every now and then. :-)

Re: [TMIC] Re: MOM

2011-08-16 Thread Barbara H.
There is such a thing as recurrent transverse myelitis: the Johns Hopkins
site describes it as "the presence of more than one episode meeting the
criteria for TM with intervening improvement and excluding the presence of
multiple sclerosis. More than half of these recurrent cases have an unknown
cause." (
http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/neurology_neurosurgery/specialty_areas/transverse_myelitis/about-tm/recurrent-tm.html).

But that may not be what is going on here, either. I don't know if TM
affects CO2 level -- unless it's affecting her diaphragm and therefore her
breathing. Hopefully they'll be able to figure out what's wrong.

BTW, Tracy, all you have to do to send a message to the group is to send it
to tmic-list@eskimo.com. The tmic addresses with "request" in them are
automated addresses where people join or leave the group.

Re: [TMIC] tornado concern

2011-05-03 Thread Barbara H.
I just cannot imagine what that kind of devastation is like. In our house in
eastern TN it was very tense listening to the storm and waiting through the
hours of the tornado warnings and watches. The power wobbled a couple of
times but thankfully never went out. But I can only imagine whatever feeling
we had were multiplied exponentially by those who were actually hit by the
tornadoes. My heart goes out to them, and I'll be praying, Randy.

[TMIC] Responding to e-mails

2011-04-04 Thread Barbara H.
I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers, but it would be really helpful if
people would read through the responses to a post before responding. A case
in point is the one from Bee Clark -- almost as soon as the first e-mail
came through (at least in my inbox), it proved to be a scam and Bee
responded herself that her account was hacked and the e-mail was not from
her. But now as people log into their accounts they are responding to the
first e-mail and telling the rest of the list it is a scam when we know that
already and it has been resolved. When you see something like that, go ahead
and read the first responses to see if it has been taken care of so the list
isn't flooded with many people saying the same thing. I know some people
think the list has been too quiet, but I don't think any of us wants to read
multiple people saying the same thing over and over for hours or days.

Just sharing my two cents. :-)

Re: [TMIC] antibiotics

2011-02-10 Thread Barbara H.
I'm so sorry about that! Do you have diabetes? I know that can cause
slowness in healing, but I am sure there are other things as well that can
affect it.

I was on at least a couple of rounds of antibiotics, maybe more, I can't
remember, with a stubborn bout of cellulitis a couple of years ago with no
problems. Sometimes antibiotics can cause stomach issues - destroying the
"good" bacteria and causing diarrhea, and they advise eating yogurt to
combat that, but I did fine without it. But I don't think they affect TM.

Re: [TMIC] I need help with member contacts. Will anybody help me?

2011-01-08 Thread Barbara H.
She must have some kind of automated response system set up without
realizing it. If someone who knows her could call her and help her figure
out how to turn that off, that would help immensely, I'm sure she's
frustrated thinking nobody is responding when it's just not getting through.

Re: [TMIC] REHAB

2011-01-06 Thread Barbara H.
It sounds like I had a different experience from the rest of you with rehab.
After my initial 8-day stay in the hospital while they ran tests and
diagnosed TM, my neurologist wanted me to go into a 10-day stay in the rehab
unit of the hospital. My insurance wouldn't cover that. I couldn't drive
myself to outpatient rehab and my husband had to go back to work, so I had
no transportation or help to get there, so they paid for a physical
therapist to come to my home 2 or 3 times a week for about three months. It
seems to me like that would have cost them more, but I don't know --
probably not as hospital stays are expensive.

The girl who came was sweet -- she didn't mind if my kids came in and
watched or tried to do the same exercises. She was short and petite and I am
tall and...not petite...and I did wonder if she could handle it if I
fell. Thankfully
we didn't have to find out. She was great -- answered questions and gave me
specific exercises for my concerns.

I liked being at home because I didn't want to be in the hospital away from
the family, and because I felt my adjustments could be tailored to the
obstacles I would face in my own home rather than just general instruction
in the hospital. I did wonder occasionally if I missed something by not
being in rehab at the hospital, but it was out of my hands anyway.

My only quibble was that it only lasted until I was able to walk in a stable
fashion with a walker. I was thrilled with that, but felt I could have used
some more fine-tuning. It never occurred to us at the time that we could try
to push for that with the insurance company.

But I do believe that physical therapy was the best thing for my recovery,
next to prayer and God's grace.

[TMIC] Ken Oliver

2010-12-28 Thread Barbara H.
Many of you who are on Facebook know this already, but long-time TMIC member
Ken Oliver has been in the hospital since early December with what seemed to
be a kidney infection which then moved into his bloodstream. He was doing
better but needed rehab to build up his strength. His son posted this update
last night and gave permission to send it to the TMIC:

Here is an update on his condition. Rehab didn't work out and Dad took a
turn for the worse. We talked to the Dr. on Saturday and he told us that
since Dad is taking in little food and refusing most treatment, hospice is
the best option. He was moved to hospice this evening at the same facility
where he was to do rehab.I'm sure the family would appreciate your prayers
during this difficult time. I think Ken is 85, and by my reckoning I think
he has been the oldest TMIC member for a long time, or at least one of the
oldest. His e-mail address is kenoliver...@hotmail.com -- I don't know if
perhaps his son could receive e-mails for him and share them with him, but I
know they're able to receive updates on Ken's Facebook page.
