The doctor who performed the surgery said I might have ended up with the side under my armpit nearly touching my hip. In addition, it can adversely affect your internal organs. At age 19, I had a 4-and-a-half-hour surgery to fuse nine vertebrae in my upper back and wore body casts for 11 months. Thank goodness I didn't have to have Harrington rods attached to my spine. I originally had to wear a Milwaukee brace when I was 12, but it didn't work as we hoped it would. The idea was to wear it until my bones stopped growing - at about 18 or 20. But because my spine was also revolving besides curving in a sideways "S", I had difficulty wearing the brace. It only lasted 2 years. After that I spent the next several years wearing a corset-style brace and going to a chiropractor to help ease my back pain and relieve my headaches... because my neck axis is "off" due to the curvature, I suffered severe headaches. However, my parents and I knew chiropractic manipulation only helped the symptoms and would never "cure" the problem - even though two chiropractors I went to tried to convince us otherwise. Just as the saying goes "you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince," you also must be diligent about finding a "good" chiropractor! There are many quacks out there and you have to keep trying until you find one that helps you without taking advantage of you. I soon found I had to take control of when I needed to see the chiropractor. Nearly all of them will try to make you come in 3 times a week to start for a couple weeks or months, then 2 times a week for several more months, then once a week "maintenance". If you are truly "in touch" with your own body, you know when you need to see a chiropractor. It got to where when they tried to schedule me for my next visit, I told them I'd call when I needed to come in again. I do believe chiropractors help people in pain, it's just too bad there are so many "frogs" out there! Betty In a message dated 4/4/2011 12:44:42 A.M. My children all use chiropractors. I used to take my wee babies to the chiropractor before the doctor for ear infections - a gentle adjustment of the neck would open the ear canal and no more ear infections. My 16yr old son, who remains in incredible pain, with no dx just went yesterday. We are a family of believers of the value of a GOOD AND REPUTABLE Chiropractor amongst other things. Have a good visit with your chiro - you will be glad you did! Janet
Re: [TMIC] Chiropractic treatment
Well, I have spondylolisthesys at L-2,3 which means that L-3 is out of place and pulled back from L-2. I got it in the mid 1980s when trying to lift a very heavy window without support. I felt a ping in my lower back, but that was all. I forgot about it till: after trying to move a crate weighing over 220 lbs, I pulled that old injury to my spine and a few dayze later, I had a bad case of sciatica and then lumbago. So I went to a chiropractor who took x-rays of my spine, pinpointed the troubling spot and proceeded to manipulate my back, pushing here, massaging there, etc My neck was also having a bout of crepitation so she worked on that one as well. Five years afterwards, I lost all discomfort in my back and neck. Yes, it took that longbut it was worth it. However, when I overdo it at work some 'pain' comes back so I do some exercises she also taught me, some involve stretching and bending; and when doing some of them I can 'hear' my spine shifting (crunch crunch) and the 'pain' is gone. Same with my neck. The noises have never bothered me, and have never been threatening to my back or neck. I've heard of some horror stories about chiropractors. But not me did I luck out... If I had to do it again, I'd jump right in. BobbyJim From: Bob and Sue Mattis To: TMIC list Sent: Friday, April 01, 2011 16:35 Subject: [TMIC] Chiropractic treatment Hey group! I don't usually ask about opinions dealing with myself, but more often about concerns of other folks, but this time it's about me. Has anyone in our group ever used chiropractic treatment after TM? I have had TM for 10 years and are able to walk either unaided or with a cane or walker depending on the circumstances. Over the last few years, because of my gait issues, and the way I "waddle", I have developed hip pain on a daily basis. I have gotten approval from my neuro to see a chiropractor but there is still that little nagging voice in my head that tells me not to mess with my spine. I'd appreciate any thoughts you have on this. Thanks folks! Sue

There is always hope. Those of you who are worried about the "2-year" improvement time, the improvement still happens after the 2 years. Actually, I wonder if some of the problem is the baclofen that many of us take to ward off the leg spasms. We need the baclofen to be able to sleep, but it puts us into a deep enough sleep that we can't feel the urge to pee. And, the urge to pee now feels different than the urge did before I got TM. I, for one, am not going to stop taking baclofen.Couldn't sleep without it and the frustration of the spasms is not worth a "dry" pad.Oh well, just wanted to let you "newbies" know that improvement keeps coming - we just have to be patient. It’s hard to believe that ten years have passed and I like to say that time flies when you can feel your toes! As crazy as it sounds there are worse things than getting TM. Over the past ten years I have gained an appreciation for many things as a result of TM. I’m so glad to live in a country where my medical care was provided free of charge and I didn’t have to fight with HMO’s or sell my house to deal with medical bills. I’m glad I have been able to work and I’m so pleased to have met some wonderful people who got dealt the same hand and made the most of it. My theory remains that we don’t come with a warranty and there is no sense in bitching and whining about what happens. When I first got TM I asked my neurologist “why me?” He replied “it has to be someone”. I thought that answer was brilliant. Someone wins the lottery and someone gets hit by lightning. Ten years ago I made a decision that I was going to make the most of things and I’m glad I did. So…hello again to those of you who have been here for a long time and also to those who are new. Hang in there and keep trying to wiggle those toes….it pays off! Neil (In NS)

Which means that either physical exertion or stressful situations or attempts at verbal or written communication can overload the circuitry and send me into convulsions that end up with me on the floor, stiff as a board and unable to talk. Talk about communication! Last summer was a real example. I was visiting my 94-year-old mother, who is very frail, when I had an attack after getting too excited that the Yankees had one a close game against the Red Sox. There we were, me on the floor and my mother putting a pillow under my head. What a pair we made. It was all very funny to both of us. Eventually, I was able go get up and resume something like a normal posture. I am at peace, since as an economics professor I can still work and the TM only meant that I must be very careful and slow with things, but at least I can walk, and take care of my needs. Back in 1956 I broke my right arm in three places. Two compound fractures below the elbow and one above. The ortho decided to put a rod up above the elbow. It was made out of platinum and after a year, the doc wanted it back, to 'use on the next victim'.;>)It was so long ago I remember little but I do recall that every time I rode an electric trolley, I'd get a small shock when I touched the metal hand bars. For those of you who do not know what Cindy is going through, I had a double break of the femur in 1987 and was given a choice of a nail (rod) or a cast. With the rod they can make your leg the exact correct length. With a cast, probably not which means a limp for life. They drilled a hole through the bone in the lower leg to install a 1/4" by 5" metal shaft to hook up the traction ropes to stretch out the leg to the proper length as the tendons and ligaments pulled tight after the break. After a week, surgery. They dislocated my hip to insert the rod or nail into the center of the femur where the bone marrow is. The nail is 18" long and 5/8" diameter, hollow with a slit down the entire length,( mine is stainless steel) and has to be preshaped to the curve of the leg. It's called a nail because they pound it in. Mine didn't fit and they had to make another one so the surgery lasted 12 hours. With my leg broken in 3 pieces, they put 6 --2 1/2" screws to hold the pieces in place. Over a few months the screws are removed. After a year or so they want to remove the nail. I decided to keep mine in rather than go through the trauma of the removal. It was over a year after surgery before I was able to walk without crutches and it was a year later when I got my first infection. Apparently the Nail can move once the screws are out and after a hiking trip the rubbing caused an infection. It was very painful but after two weeks of anti-biotics I got over it. I had two more infections after that but none for about 6 years. I am happy that I went with the nail rather than a cast as I could walk and run just fine until the TM onset. Cindy, I hope they keep you stoned as much as you want because I know the pain you have been through and understand what is in front of you yet. I just want our people to understand that it is easy to say "they put in a rod and they took it out" but it is so much more than that. I feel your pain. Re: [TMIC] question
Re: [TMIC] questionI've read elsewhere that once one's brain is affected by myelitis or sclerosis, that makes it an MS issue. And there are several medications to ameliorate that one. BobbyJim From: Akua To: tmic-list@eskimo.com Sent: Wednesday, December 08, 2010 12:47Subject: Re: [TMIC] question Not an answer but a suggestion. If your lesion is in your brainstem perhaps some of the the medications and approaches used for MS might be helpful. Akua May I break in with a question of my own? I am having a great deal of trouble with cramping and what I just learned is called hypertonis, which is too much muscle tone and willingness to contract, and the feedback loop to the brain that would tell the muscle not to contract being damaged by the TM in my brainstem, where the lesion was actually found. I can't continue to function with this hypertonis, which feels as if I am being electrocuted from the base of my spine, all the way down my legs and arms, so that it hurts a lot to move at all, or even talk. Only by being completely still and relaxed does this pain subside. Have any of you had experience with this? And if so, can you recommend a medication which might be useful? Thanks, and hope to hear back soon, Dalton

Oh yes.. dat ole memory loss; a side effect of all CNS illnesses but also of advancing age. At an MS symposium some years ago, we were told that at the age of 50, one's brain starts to shrink about 2% a year. For those with CNS afflictions, it can be as high as 8%. And wouldn't you know it, the first thing to go is short term memory and an ability to focus, ergo the forgetting of stuff. I guess it's a sort of attention deficit disorder or sum'thin. Dang...!!! After meeting with four different neurologists, one is of the opinion that I should take MS therapies to prevent future relapses. Even though he says I do not have MS, he calls it a clinically isolated syndrome. Since my brain MRI is abnormal, he suggests that my risk of really having MS is extremely high. I just wanted to ask if your neurologists recommended taking interferon beta or copaxone therapies? The side effects are pretty horrendous and I am really concerned about quality of life, but at the same time, I don't want to have another episode and be paralyzed permanently. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on experiences, side effects, etc. Thanks, Kelly Jean

It's been tough, especially because I decided to quit meds. No gabapentin, no miosan (for the shakes, think it's called xanaflex elsewhere) no valium, just sleeping pills. I know most of you thought I was pushing my wife away, but she's been really understanding as to why I needed to regain some independence. I did all the things I said I was going to do and I proved that TMers still have a lot of life in them. I know I am lucky to be a "walker", allbeit with a cane, but we are strong people. As a group, we can do anything and we are always going to be there for eachotherno matter what. I really think that without you guys, I could not complete my journey, so thanks! Here's the weird part, I found a little girl with TM in Trinidad, my home country in the Caribbean. I saw an article about her in the newspapers and decided to contact her parents. I met them. The kid's name is Christa. She is 10 years old and has been diagnosed with TM some 10 months now, but her family does not have the money for treatment and treatment is not available in Trinidad. So they've been battling with this thing of ours all the while without proper care, so I got involved. Christa, is the sweetest little kid I ever met, she makes your heart melt with her innocent smile and she's so upbeat all the time, despite being in a wheelchair. She has the strenght that I think I was looking for all along. Imagine, I actually thought that while I was there I was going to do everything in my power to help her, but all along she was helping me. Her parents managed to raise somewhere near $12 US already and they plan to take her to Johns Hopkins. I got in contact with the doctors there and they are ready to accept her case. So, I'm not sure what actually happened to me over the last few months, but I think I found what I was looking fornot in a selfish journey to the islands, but in the eyes of a child. Now I'm home in Rio de Janeiro and I think I'm going to play with my cat for a bit then take my wife out for lunch, then take her to the FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa. [TMIC] Dem travellin folks.
So them two made it into Memphis all in one piece about 4 PM yesterday. I met them about 2 hours later and had supper with them at a nearby hamburger joint, one I've been to more than once before. Not bad. It was fun meeting dem two roaddies with her scooter strapped to the back of the van and them both comfortably settled inside this very nice Toyota van. Much much nicer'n my olde Dodge van. (no, they wouldn't swap) After having spent Sunday night in a shelter full of stranded travellers near Nashville, they were both ready for a good night's sleep and then on to Graceland and a river boat tour later on that day. That to be reported later, regards from Elvisland, BobbyJim

Re: [TMIC] REPLY ALL vs REPLY
Ah yes, maybe the newbies need a couple of lessons on how to reply to our messages. It ain't all that hard, folks.Just pay close attention and read these notes carefully. Just a few simple rules, like, distinguishing between 'reply' and 'reply to all'. One uses 'reply' when answering individually to a message. One can add other names as well on the cc: line; those names come from your address book. wht. You haven't established an address book... What are you waiting for.. Really, now. One uses 'reply to all' when writing to the whole list, no exceptions... there ARE ways to delete names but I'll leave that for a separate lesson. One important rule: you canNOT use the 'reply to all' thingie when you want to send a message to a single recipient. You must watch what you're clicking on. Eyeballs must be set on HIGH.;>);>);>). From: lynne myers To: tmic Sent: Wednesday, March 10, 2010 6:26 Subject: [TMIC] Lesions and Myelin Regeneration This is a quote from one of the message forum pages on TM website: Even though the lesion(s) are gone, there may be underlying nerve damage caused by the inflammation and the fact that the nerves were "unprotected" once the myelin got "eaten" away. The myelin grows back at 1mm a day, so it takes a while for the body to repair itself, BUT the nerve can remain damaged. You will know what damage is left at the 2 yr mark. After this you can still have some recovery but it is very small and unlikely to be very noticeable. This information is provided by one of the site administrators who is also a Registered Nurse.

We'll grill more than meats, veggies such as corn wrapped in foil with basil leaves(fresh) wrapped around them, mixed veggies also wrapped in foil come out quite tasty as well. In Missouri, that is in April - but we grill until the end of October. On my last MRI, he said the nerves have healed and are not swollen, but the protective coating has been destroyed and that is was causing the problems. He also confirms the TM diagnosis. I am able to walk in the house without any aids, but I cannot stand alone for anymore than a few seconds. When I am moving I am o.k. but when I stop I have to have something to hold on to. My family said I waddle like a duck when walking but at least I can get where I want to go. I used to use the walker with a wheels and a seat while cooking, but I don't have to do that anymore. I am pooped after. I also use a walker when I am out and about. I need the security of having something to hold on it. I also have an electric cart so I can get around to various functions, but don't use it much during the winter. I use it when going to things like the State Fair, etc. It is always so nice when we can compare symptoms and problems. It shows we are not alone in this. Take care and don't give up! I can walk, but not well without aids. When I do, I use up so much of my energy that I cannot function much after doing just a very small amount, so it's just not worth it. Around the house I use a walker with wheels for household chores like laundry and while doing my cooking prep at the kitchen table, etc. I can't walk and carry hardly anything unless it's like from one counter to another in the kitchen or if there isn't any weight to it. It just doesn't work for me. Like can't walk and chew gum, you know? It's just easier than using a cane or crutch and then going back and forth with just one thing at a time. I can load it up and carry a bunch of stuff at once. But, I really give myself a workout just trying to cook at the stove. That's a real challenge for me to stand at the stove for very long and I really miss spending more time cooking. My daughter in-law says when I start to look like a cowgirl, that's when you know that I'm in trouble and looking like I'm in danger of overdoing it. So, I do as much as I can sitting. Improvement. me thinx she's at the stage where improvement would be the regeneration of her myelin, a feat not yet at hand. She's fully mobile, sleeps well, works an eight-hour day and loves to cook. She also likes gardening but I take care of the harder chores because after a couple of hours out in the garden, specially in the summer, she starts to fade a bit. All this, am sure, is because she's been on Avonex since March '99. Initially as my body sort of "woke up" as I say, I went gradually from having no pain or feeling to having more and more pain. I still have decreased sensation in some areas and hyper or hypo sensation and pain in others. I have B/B issues too. As time goes on my symptoms still don't really change. My symptoms are so much like so many others here and that's the reason that I stay. I think this may be relative to the fact of it being spinal cord injury, not sure. Maybe injury is injury, and the effects of it remains the same depending upon where on the cord the injury happens. But, I may be over simplifying things. I am very pleased to say though, and this is extremely important to me, that when I do slack off on my exercises and notice my body getting weaker, it does bounce back when I get back into an exercise routine again. I generally stop doing my exercises when I get sick and need all the energy and strength just to get around the house and to the bathroom. And at that point I really weaken. I know this happens to many of you. If I have the flu or any infection, it is really hard on my body. Seems strange that they follow the symptoms for a while and then change some, but then isn't that what TM does? I am certainly not the same as I was when TM hit - yet I still follow the symptoms, a couple added and a couple disappeared. What a situation it puts us in, but at least we all have each other. Can't tell you what a difference it made to discover this website. Thanks guys. I've never been talked to about MS though. I had only one attack, was paralyzed from waist to toes within 15 minutes, at lesion T8-10. I even went to 2 different hospitals, as I wanted a second opinion, both with a TM diagnosis. After about 3 yrs I was told by my first Neuro, who became my treating Neuro that I didn't have TM. He didn't know what caused the paralysis and no other information as to why. Not a spinal infarction or stroke, or anything else. I had trouble with my disability claim and he was the cause so I changed Neuro's a few of years later and she had MRI's done and told me the same thing. MRI's have come a long way and the lesion is not there any longer and they can't see any cause, like a bleed or anything. She looked for evidence of a bleed because she wanted to rule out the possibility of it happening again and couldn't find it. So guys, since I've had 2 Neuro's both tell me that I don't have TM, I really don't care. I'm sticking with it, and you are just stuck with me. I'm happy here, I get the support tha
