as far as going to the neuro unless there are circumstances that would cause
you to have to have help 6 month visits are normal.theres not much they can do
anyway.managment of symptoms can be done by primary care after you find out
what works best

I was offered Copaxone by my neurologist about 2 years ago. He had a study
showing the drug could prevent TM from progressing to MS. However the study
was by the manufacturer of Copaxone so I declined to take it. One question -
when saw my neurologist Dec, 2011, I was told he no longer needed to see me
unless there was a problem. Is this normal not to be followed at least yearly?
I do see my Primary care doctor 3-4 times a year.

I agree. I was diagnosed with TM in 2002 and MS in 2008. I think it was MS
all along. I stopped getting the flu shot in 2002, and no flu. (just lucky I
guess). I had a transplant in 1993, and my immune system is knocked down by the
anti-rejection meds. My doc and my neuro say to get the shot, but I don’t.
it’s my belief that they just don’t know, they don’t really know what causes
TM, they don’t know what causes MS, and they don’t really know what effect the

So, I’ll take my chances. I’m taking Copaxone injections for MS.

It's nice to read all the comments. We haven't had a lot of conversation. I
get on Facebook a little but not with the TM group.
I think I will still take my chances and not get the flu shot. The flu was
not fun, but still don't want to take a chance on another TM episode. I was
very fortunate in that with the onset of TM I have a balance problem but can
still walk and I do have other issues (fatigue, mild bathroom issues, etc.) but
I still work, keep up the house and get by with taking it a day at a time but
NOT like some others in wheelchairs and very much unable to function as they
once did. So, I may keep on and just realize I went all these years without a
shot and without flu until this season.

  Come to think of it;

I was diagnosed with spondilolesthesis at aged 15 and had
back problems from then on. It even kept me out of the Army in 1967. Then the
30' fall from a power poll in 1970 at aged 22, which smashed everything.

Anyway, what we are NOT considering is how many others had
all these problems and never went on to develop MS, TM, or any similar
condition. Because I know of very few persons who do not have some sort of
back condition—injury-situation-whatever.

If Bee is legitimate, she would be contacting her credit card

I have spondylolisthesis from L-1 to S-2; and can twist my lower back out
just getting into my chair. I will not have any fusion done as it takes away
mobility. Plus T-3 through T-6 were messed up in a car wreck years ago. When I
became paralyzed they said it would have to be fixed (fused) in later years,
but I am not going to do that either. Going into my spinal canal for the pump
is enough of a risk, and I am not willing to risk further surgical procedures
near my spinal cord. I did see an old chiropractor once a long time ago, and
he did some deal where he aligned my whole spine with one pull while holding my
neck and head and someone holding down my pelvis on a long table. Couldn't
walk for a day, but for about a year after that I had no pain or any other
problems with my back. To bad Doc Harvey died him I'd trust, but no one
else. Just my two cents worth.

performed the surgery said I might have ended up with the side under my armpit
nearly touching my hip. In addition, it can adversely affect your internal
organs. At age 19, I had a 4-and-a-half-hour surgery to fuse nine vertebrae in
my upper back and wore body casts for 11 months. Thank goodness I didn't have
to have Harrington rods attached to my spine.

I originally had to wear a Milwaukee brace when I was 12, but it didn't work
as we hoped it would. The idea was to wear it until my bones stopped growing -
at about 18 or 20. But because my spine was also revolving besides curving in a
sideways "S", I had difficulty wearing the brace. It only lasted 2 years.

After that I spent the next several years wearing a corset-style brace and
going to a chiropractor to help ease my back pain and relieve my headaches...
because my neck axis is "off" due to the curvature, I suffered severe
headaches. However, my parents and I knew chiropractic manipulation only helped
the symptoms and would never "cure" the problem - even though two chiropractors
I went to tried to convince us otherwise.

Just as the saying goes "you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince,"
you also must be diligent about finding a "good" chiropractor! There are many
quacks out there and you have to keep trying until you find one that helps you
without taking advantage of you. I soon found I had to take control of when I
needed to see the chiropractor. Nearly all of them will try to make you come in
3 times a week to start for a couple weeks or months, then 2 times a week for
several more months, then once a week "maintenance". If you are truly "in
touch" with your own body, you know when you need to see a chiropractor. It got
to where when they tried to schedule me for my next visit, I told them I'd call
when I needed to come in again.

I do believe chiropractors help people in pain, it's just too bad there are
so many "frogs" out there!

I have been using Chiropractic treatment since I was 12, and I have
celebrated my 36th anniversary of my 12th birthday.

  My children all use chiropractors.

I used to take my wee babies to the chiropractor before the doctor for ear
infections - a gentle adjustment of the neck would open the ear canal and no
more ear infections.

My 16yr old son, who remains in incredible pain, with no dx just went
yesterday. We are a family of believers of the value of a GOOD AND REPUTABLE
Chiropractor amongst other things.

Have a good visit with your chiro - you will be glad you did!

spine shifting (crunch crunch) and the 'pain' is gone. Same with my neck.
The noises have never bothered me, and have never been threatening to my back

I've heard of some horror stories about chiropractors. But not me did I

I don't usually ask about opinions dealing with myself, but more often about
concerns of other folks, but this time it's about me. Has anyone in our group
ever used chiropractic treatment after TM? I have had TM for 10 years and are
able to walk either unaided or with a cane or walker depending on the
circumstances. Over the last few years, because of my gait issues, and the way
I "waddle", I have developed hip pain on a daily basis. I have gotten approval
from my neuro to see a chiropractor but there is still that little nagging
voice in my head that tells me not to mess with my spine. I'd appreciate any
thoughts you have on this. Thanks folks!

Hope it isn't because of health, just busy people.

Just wanted to tell those of you still having problems with the bladder that,
after 4 years, I am definitely improving. I am having some "dry" nights -
not always, but definitely more
than before.Actually some are dry and some are drier. There is
always hope. Those of you who are worried about the "2-year" improvement
time, the improvement still happens
after the 2 years. Actually, I wonder if some of the
problem is the baclofen that many of us take to ward off the leg spasms. We
need the baclofen to be able to sleep, but it
puts us into a deep enough sleep that we can't feel the urge to pee. And,
the urge to pee now feels different than the urge did before I got TM. I,
for one, am not going to stop taking baclofen.Couldn't sleep without it and
the frustration of the spasms is not worth a "dry" pad.Oh well, just wanted
to let you "newbies" know that improvement keeps coming - we just have to be

It’s been a long time since I have posted to the list but today is special so
I decided to drop by and say hello. Feb 4th is my 10th anniversary of TM. It’s
hard to believe that ten years have passed and I like to say that time flies
when you can feel your toes!

As crazy as it sounds there are worse things than getting TM. Over the past
ten years I have gained an appreciation for many things as a result of TM. I’m
so glad to live in a country where my medical care was provided free of charge
and I didn’t have to fight with HMO’s or sell my house to deal with medical
bills. I’m glad I have been able to work and I’m so pleased to have met some
wonderful people who got dealt the same hand and made the most of it.

My theory remains that we don’t come with a warranty and there is no sense in
bitching and whining about what happens. When I first got TM I asked my
neurologist “why me?” He replied “it has to be someone”. I thought that answer
was brilliant. Someone wins the lottery and someone gets hit by lightning. Ten
years ago I made a decision that I was going to make the most of things and I’m
glad I did.

So…hello again to those of you who have been here for a long time and also to
those who are new. Hang in there and keep trying to wiggle those toes….it pays
off!

  Hello everyone,

We are still here, nothing has
changed, my email address is the same, so I don't really know what is going on
with the cyber space communications. We were not directly adversely affected
by the flooding around Brisbane as we are on high ground here. Our youngest
son who lives about 16 kilometres north of us, had water through his garage but
not the house. He is in fairly flat area and the storm water backed up and
did not drain away from the street well.We have not been affected by the
cyclone either, Cairns is around 1960 kilometres north of us, however we have
friends who live at Luninda just near where the cyclone crossed the coast. We
have not heard from them at this time, I think they would have evacuated to
higher ground.

Could you please let me know when
you get this email. I will keep it short for now, hopefully it will go through.

Take care all and be well.

Kindest Regards from Errol White, South East Queensland, Australia

My guess is, that for safety and good hygiene, this list, like many
others, disallows attachments

in general as these may contain hostile programs.

If we had a website attached to our list (like yahoo) (or Gmail-rjh)

And my lesions were in the brainstem.

Which means that either physical exertion or stressful situations or
attempts at verbal or written communication can overload the circuitry and send
me into convulsions that end up with me on the floor, stiff as a board and
unable to talk.

Talk about communication! Last summer was a real example. I was
visiting my 94-year-old mother, who is very frail, when I had an attack after
getting too excited that the Yankees had one a close game against the Red Sox.
There we were, me on the floor and my mother putting a pillow under my head.
What a pair we made. It was all very funny to both of us. Eventually, I was
able go get up and resume something like a normal posture.

I am at peace, since as an economics professor I can still work and
the TM only meant that I must be very careful and slow with things, but at
least I can walk, and take care of my needs. So, I thank God for what I have.

i was fortunate with the bowel/bladder problems. not like i dont have
areas there that is not touched but it is controllable.

i have sensations that are not normal ,it could have been different
in that the nerves could have really messed me up in that area.

it is not unusual though when other things in the neurological arena
cause the same disfunctions

nerves are nerves so one could say that when things go wrong,

"what we have here is a lack of communication"

we have a body that is wonderfully made when it works right.

Back in 1956 I broke my right arm in three places. Two compound fractures
below the elbow and one above. The ortho decided to put a rod up above the
elbow. It was made out of platinum and after a year, the doc wanted it back,
to 'use on the next victim'.;>)It was so long ago I remember little but
I do recall that every time I rode an electric trolley, I'd get a small shock
when I touched the metal hand bars.

  NOT FOR THE SQUEEMISH!

For those of you who do not know what Cindy is going through, I had a double
break of the femur in 1987 and was given a choice of a nail (rod) or a cast.
With the rod they can make your leg the exact correct length. With a cast,
probably not which means a limp for life. They drilled a hole through the bone
in the lower leg to install a 1/4" by 5" metal shaft to hook up the traction
ropes to stretch out the leg to the proper length as the tendons and ligaments
pulled tight after the break. After a week, surgery. They dislocated my hip
to insert the rod or nail into the center of the femur where the bone marrow
is. The nail is 18" long and 5/8" diameter, hollow with a slit down the entire
length,( mine is stainless steel) and has to be preshaped to the curve of the
leg. It's called a nail because they pound it in. Mine didn't fit and they
had to make another one so the surgery lasted 12 hours. With my leg broken in
3 pieces, they put 6 --2 1/2" screws to hold the pieces in place. Over a few
months the screws are removed. After a year or so they want to remove the
nail. I decided to keep mine in rather than go through the trauma of the
removal.

It was over a year after surgery before I was able to walk without crutches
and it was a year later when I got my first infection. Apparently the Nail can
move once the screws are out and after a hiking trip the rubbing caused an
infection. It was very painful but after two weeks of anti-biotics I got over
it. I had two more infections after that but none for about 6 years. I am
happy that I went with the nail rather than a cast as I could walk and run just
fine until the TM onset.

Cindy, I hope they keep you stoned as much as you want because I know the
pain you have been through and understand what is in front of you yet. I just
want our people to understand that it is easy to say "they put in a rod and
they took it out" but it is so much more than that. I feel your pain.
  God Bless You
  Jim

Not an answer but a suggestion.
If your lesion is in your brainstem perhaps some of the the medications
and approaches used for MS might be helpful.

  Akua

May I break in with a question of my own?

I am having a great deal of trouble with cramping and what I just learned
is called hypertonis, which is too much muscle tone and willingness to
contract, and the feedback loop to the brain that would tell the muscle not to
contract being damaged by the TM in my brainstem, where the lesion was actually
found.

I can't continue to function with this hypertonis, which feels as if I am
being electrocuted from the base of my spine, all the way down my legs and
arms, so that it hurts a lot to move at all, or even talk. Only by being
completely still and relaxed does this pain subside.

Have any of you had experience with this? And if so, can you recommend a
medication which might be useful?

Thanks, and hope to hear back soon,

Some of you may recall that I was the drummer with a group called the
"Edsels" in the late 50's. We recorded a song called Rama Lama Ding Dong.
Anyway, I was talkin with Harry Green (2nd Tenor), and Marshall Sewel (Bass)
the other night, and we discussed George (Wydell) Jones who passed away two
years ago. George was the lead singer with us. Marshall asked what was wrong
with me using a cane, so I told him. He asked if that was anything like Polio
and I told him the difference, and started complaining. He said, "Ya know, Doc
Had Polio". Doc who I asked. He said Doc Pomus who's real name was Jerome
Felder. I never met him but Marshall had so he related this story. Doc
contracted Polio as a child way back and in his early years, and was confined
to a wheel chair. It seems he and his wife were at an awards ceremony where Doc
was watching his wife dance with other guys that they of course knew, so Doc
penned a song for her as he watched called "Save the last dance for me". If
anyone here is old enough, the Drifters recorded that back in the early 60's.
Check out the Drifters on You Tube, click on save the last dance for me, and
listen to the words. Just goes to show what you can do if you set your mind to
it. He wrote a ton of other hits also, but this one especially hit home with
me. Something I never knew before. I guess we never stop learning.

Gunny - I grew up with the music of the Drifters, etc. I sure do miss
hearing it on any radio station now days. The stuff they have now that they
call music is a shame. "Save the last dance for me", was and is one of my
favorites. Thanks for the memories you brought to my mind.

Thanks again, Gunny, and I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Subject: [TMIC] Save the last dance

When I was getting ready to leave the hospital the dr.s were telling me I had
to cath every four hours after I left. Yet they were changing my cath in the
hospital every three days? I argued that the more cathing that was done, the
more the chance of infection increased. winning that battle I pushed for the
condom catheter and that was used for the last week of my stay. I have been
on the condom cath for 7 months now and even though it comes off now and then
when I am transfering in or out of my chair, it still is way beter and cheaper
than the internal cath. My wife and wonderful caretaker devised a method of
taping the condom cath in place with two bands of narrow tape and it works
prety well. I have had no bladder infections like I did when I was in the
hospital with the internal cath.

Prior to my colonoscopy, I was to take Dulcolax (http://www.dulcolaxusa.com/)

I also drank magnesium citrate, chilled, and with at least one tall glass of

REAL ESTATE SALES TAX TO GO INTO EFFECT 2013
(Part of HC Bill)

Did you know that if you sell your house after
2012 you will pay a 3.8% sales tax on it? That’s $3,800 on a $100,000 home etc.
When did this happen? It’s in the healthcare bill. Just thought you should know.

REAL ESTATE SALES TAX

No, this is "change you can believe in"?

Under the new health care bill - did you know
that all real estate transactions will be subject to a 3.8% Sales Tax? The
bulk of these new taxes don't kick in until 2013 (presumably after obama’s
re-election). You can thank Nancy, Harry and Barack and your local Democrat
Congressman for this one. If you sell your $400,000 home, there will be a
$15,200 tax. This bill is set to screw the retiring generation who often
downsize their homes. Is this Hope & Change great or what? Does this stuff
makes your November and 2012 votes more important?

Oh, you weren't aware this was in the obamacare
bill? Guess what, you aren't alone. There are more than a few members of
Congress that aren't aware of it either (result of clandestine midnight voting
for huge bills they've never read). AND, there are a few other surprises
lurking.

Why am I sending you this? The same reason I
hope you forward this to every single person in your address book.

People have the right to know thetruth because
an election is coming in
November!

  Akua,

While growing up we were taught that if there was something we could do to
assist another we were expected to do so. This meant like crossing the street,
carrying groceries, etc if we were children. Then as we were older, it extended
to picking up extra groceries when we shopped for ours, and larger tasks as
well.

It seems that these days there are so many more churces than there were when
I was a child, and I find less people helping those in need of help. When I
attended church we had a bulletin that would would enlist the help of those who
could and ask those who needed help or knew of anyone within the congregation
or out that needed it.

Is this something that just doesn't happen anymore? Do people not offer to
help each other any longer unless they know you? I remember my mother giving
somebody gas money when they helped her with a ride home when her car died and
them putting it back in her pocket many times

Hugs, Barbara A in Auburn CA

Scott Johnson, a MS sufferer, left Silicon Valley to found this Center,
motivated by the question, why did it take so long for there to be cure.

He is reported as changing the model of how research works. He is said to ask
the question of
how could myelin be fixed, thereby making research, clinical science, more
patient focused.

The PBS newshour news story-- just heard-- Thursday 9/23/10
focused on academic scientists at UCSF.

This made me very excited--- because what we share with MS is the loss of
myelin and
if a fix/restore is found for this, life would be wonderful.

I looked it up online-- it's called Foundation, not "center" as the reporter
said.

  http://www.myelinrepair.org/myelin_repair/
" The Myelin Repair Foundation has brought together an aggressive plan with
the right scientific team. The result: We're speeding the time it takes to
develop and move scientific discoveries from the laboratory to the MS patient -
making the process up to twice as fast. Our scientific team's accomplishments
include the following:

  * Identified over 150 potential myelin repair targets.
  * Identified 24 new research tools that may have application across all
neurological disease research.
  * Identified 20 patentable inventions; First patent awarded in 2008.
Second patent awarded in 2010.
  * Published more than 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals"

Janice you are correct,,, maybe this will help

Hitting reply ALL only works if it is an original email from the Digest. once
we start having more "repliies added to subjects" then the person that replied
will get two emails if reply all is hit.

by hitting "reply all" the response sent will pop up two times in the person
who just replied/sent the email their email box because your email address is
included in the digest list and your email is listed seperatly on the reply.

what needs to be done is when hit "reply all" is to remove the individual
names/email address so it does not send 2 times.

once to the emial address and once because that persons email address is on
the Diegest.

when replying if you use just the"reply " button the the email will ONLY go
to the person that sent it and the entire digest list will NOT see a response.

  Example being -

Jamice email is listed in the TO:

Bobby Jim is listed in the CC and the tmis-list is also in the CC

which means Janice will get two times, once as her email address and once
because hers in on the eskimo list.

Oh yes.. dat ole memory loss; a side effect of
all CNS illnesses but also of advancing age. At an MS symposium some years
ago, we were told that at the age of 50, one's brain starts to shrink about 2%
a year. For those with CNS afflictions, it can be as high as 8%.
And wouldn't you know it, the first thing to go is short term memory and an
ability to focus, ergo the forgetting of stuff. I guess it's a sort of
attention deficit disorder or sum'thin.
Dang...!!! If it wasn't bad enuff awready, eh.?

Hi Everyone,

I was Dx with TM in May and have recovered quite well after being
temporarily paralyzed. However, I still suffer from the sensory, coordination,
bladder and sexual problems. I have just been prescribed gabapentin for my
neuropathy.

After meeting with four different neurologists, one is of the opinion
that I should take MS therapies to prevent future relapses. Even though he says
I do not have MS, he calls it a clinically isolated syndrome. Since my brain
MRI is abnormal, he suggests that my risk of really having MS is extremely
high.

I just wanted to ask if your neurologists recommended taking interferon
beta or copaxone therapies? The side effects are pretty horrendous and I am
really concerned about quality of life, but at the same time, I don't want to
have another episode and be paralyzed permanently. I would greatly appreciate
any feedback on experiences, side effects, etc.

Thanks,
Kelly Jean

  Janet,

I'm not really wise.. :) I just go to Environment Canada and check the
temps. It is usually in Centigrade but then if you click on the C it will
convert it to Farenheit. However, a quick way I convert when not near the
computer is I double the current Celcius then add 32 degrees and minus about 4
degrees. Example. plus 29C would be 29 plus 29 plus 32 - 4 equals approx
86 Farenheit. LOL

Yes, I too prefer the heat to the cold. Right this minute it is 12:34 pm.
Calgary time. The Celcius temps is plus 16 C or 62 F according to Environment
Canada.

It has been quite cool here in Calgary this summer with a ton of big
thunderstorms, large hail and wind and that is all in one day. For the first
time in it's 98 year history the Calgary Stampede had to cancel the evening
Chuckwagon races and the big Grandstand show due to rain, wind, hail, etc.

Unlike Eastern Canada who have been sweltering in hot very humid conditions.

I prefer this cooler version of summer. Even with the rain because my
muscles do not seize up as much as they do in the winter with the cold and
snow.

Wherever you are fellow TMer's I hope you are all having a good day.

Jaron,
While you're in Brazil I think you should check out the juices with
Acai Berry in them. I have gotten TREMENDOUS relief from drinking this (new to
my area) juice called Mona Vie that I've even become a distributor. Its some
super antioxidant berry that I am quite sure has anti-inflammatory properties
to it. It may not work for everyone but I even have my Dr. hooked on it. And
he said he has other patients that drink it and have found relief.
Give it a try (at least for a month or 2) and let me know what you
think.
Have a great day!

  Hi guys,
A couple of months ago I left Brasil for the Caribbean to spend some
time alone and try to rediscover life before TM. It's been tough, especially
because I decided to quit meds. No gabapentin, no miosan (for the shakes, think
it's called xanaflex elsewhere) no valium, just sleeping pills. I know most of
you thought I was pushing my wife away, but she's been really understanding as
to why I needed to regain some independence. I did all the things I said I was
going to do and I proved that TMers still have a lot of life in them. I know I
am lucky to be a "walker", allbeit with a cane, but we are strong people. As a
group, we can do anything and we are always going to be there for
eachotherno matter what. I really think that without you guys, I could not
complete my journey, so thanks!
Here's the weird part, I found a little girl with TM in Trinidad, my
home country in the Caribbean. I saw an article about her in the newspapers and
decided to contact her parents. I met them. The kid's name is Christa. She is
10 years old and has been diagnosed with TM some 10 months now, but her family
does not have the money for treatment and treatment is not available in
Trinidad. So they've been battling with this thing of ours all the while
without proper care, so I got involved. Christa, is the sweetest little kid I
ever met, she makes your heart melt with her innocent smile and she's so upbeat
all the time, despite being in a wheelchair. She has the strenght that I think
I was looking for all along. Imagine, I actually thought that while I was there
I was going to do everything in my power to help her, but all along she was
helping me.
Her parents managed to raise somewhere near $12 US already and
they plan to take her to Johns Hopkins. I got in contact with the doctors there
and they are ready to accept her case.
So, I'm not sure what actually happened to me over the last few
months, but I think I found what I was looking fornot in a selfish journey
to the islands, but in the eyes of a child.
Now I'm home in Rio de Janeiro and I think I'm going to play with my
cat for a bit then take my wife out for lunch, then take her to the FIFA World
Cup finals in South Africa. Another journey perhaps, this time with my wife!
  Bye guys,
  Jeron

It was fun meeting dem two roaddies with her scooter strapped to the back
of the van and them both comfortably settled inside this very nice Toyota van.
Much much nicer'n my olde Dodge van. (no, they wouldn't swap)

After having spent Sunday night in a shelter full of stranded travellers near
Nashville, they were both ready for a good night's sleep and then on to
Graceland and a river boat tour later on that day. That to be reported

Anti depressants also carry a risk of increased suicide until the user
adjusts. the suicide risk is also temporary and passes when the taker adjusts.
It is good to know that this is a possibility so that doctors, patients and
their family's can monitor the patient for such a side effect but if you do the
math the risk is very small and keeping an eye on it can lower the risk even
more.

Re: [TMIC] REPLY ALL vs REPLY

2010-04-18 Thread bobby jim
Ah yes, maybe the newbies need a couple of lessons on how to reply to our
messages.

It ain't all that hard, folks.Just pay close attention and read these notes
carefully.

Just a few simple rules, like, distinguishing between 'reply' and 'reply
to all'.

One uses 'reply' when answering individually to a message. One can add other
names as well on the cc: line; those names come from your address book.
wht. You haven't established an address book... What are
you waiting for.. Really, now.

One uses 'reply to all' when writing to the whole list, no exceptions...
there ARE ways to delete names but I'll leave that for a separate lesson.

One important rule: you canNOT use the 'reply to all' thingie when you want to
send a message to a single recipient. You must watch what you're clicking
on. Eyeballs must be set on HIGH.;>);>);>).

Another option is the bcc: line but again, I'll leave it for a separate lesson.

much like that which I experienced. It would come and go like someone was
sending electrical shocks through my body. My rash was also around my waist,
from the belly button to the small of my back on my right side. At that time,
the only thing they could give me was pain pills (thank heavens since it was
the worse pain I have had experienced even after 3 pregnancies). I had cream
for the rash, but it didn't do any good. Finally, I just used old fashioned
calamine lotion which helped to dry up the eruptions. They don't really know
what causes TM, but many doctors feel that people who have had shingles are

This is a quote from one of the message forum pages on TM website:

Even though the lesion(s) are gone, there may be underlying nerve
damage caused by the inflammation and the fact that the nerves were
"unprotected" once the myelin got "eaten" away. The myelin grows back at 1mm a
day, so it takes a while for the body to repair itself, BUT the nerve can
remain damaged.

You will know what damage is left at the 2 yr mark. After this you can
still have some recovery but it is very small and unlikely to be very
noticeable.

This information is provided by one of the site administrators who is
also a Registered Nurse.

Re: [TMIC] To: Barbara in Auburn, CA

2010-03-09 Thread bobby jim
As I unnerstand, the inflammation subsides so the lesion seems to heal. What
is not replaced is the myelin that covers the damaged nerves, ergo the

Hi Barbara,
I reread your answer to Randy with interest.
You were told you had TM and then that you didn't.
But what puzzles me is that your neuros tell you that "the lesion isn't
there anymore".
That must mean that you had it in the first place, doesn't it?
Lesions in the spine from my understanding don't disappear, so what
happened to it?

I'm sorryAt first I thought my email got spammed so I sent a report to
Yahoo. I just got a response back. It turns out that it wasn't me, some other
computer that has my email in it was apparently the culprit. It got ahold of my
email address from that and then migrated all through my contact list.

Here is a paraphrased response from Yahoo...

  Hello Kevin,

Thank you for contacting Yahoo! Customer Care. Before I go into
addressing your concern, I'd like to first apologize for the delay in my
responding to your inquiry. We are committed to answering your questions
as quickly and accurately as possible. However, we are currently
receiving unusually high volumes which caused the delayed response.

It appears you may have received a message due to a worm virus.
This does not mean that your computer has been infected with the virus,
but more than likely a computer that contains your email address within its
  address book has.

These particular viruses spread by sending users an email from a
seemingly reliable source asking them to open an attachment containing
the virus. Once a user contracts the virus, it then spreads itself by
sending out new infected messages using contacts from within their
  address book."

So, Yahoo seems to have gotten it taken care of and we shouldn't have any
more problems from this.
I hope everyone just deleted the email that came from me.

Barb - my lesion is also at T-10 according to my neuro. On my last MRI, he
said the nerves have healed and are not swollen, but the protective coating has
been destroyed and that is was causing the problems. He also confirms the TM
diagnosis. I am able to walk in the house without any aids, but I cannot stand
alone for anymore than a few seconds. When I am moving I am o.k. but when I
stop I have to have something to hold on to. My family said I waddle like a
duck when walking but at least I can get where I want to go.

I used to use the walker with a wheels and a seat while cooking, but I
don't have to do that anymore. I am pooped after. I also use a walker when I
am out and about. I need the security of having something to hold on it. I
also have an electric cart so I can get around to various functions, but don't
use it much during the winter. I use it when going to things like the State
Fair, etc.

It is always so nice when we can compare symptoms and problems. It shows
we are not alone in this.

Take care and don't give up!

Hi Randy,

Yes, I have residuals. I can walk, but not well without aids. When I do,
I use up so much of my energy that I cannot function much after doing just a
very small amount, so it's just not worth it. Around the house I use a walker
with wheels for household chores like laundry and while doing my cooking prep
at the kitchen table, etc. I can't walk and carry hardly anything unless it's
like from one counter to another in the kitchen or if there isn't any weight to
it. It just doesn't work for me. Like can't walk and chew gum, you know?
It's just easier than using a cane or crutch and then going back and forth with
just one thing at a time. I can load it up and carry a bunch of stuff at once.
But, I really give myself a workout just trying to cook at the stove. That's
a real challenge for me to stand at the stove for very long and I really miss
spending more time cooking. My daughter in-law says when I start to look like
a cowgirl, that's when you know that I'm in trouble and looking like I'm in
danger of overdoing it. So, I do as much as I can sitting.

Hugs, Barbara A in Auburn CA

I still have all the same symptoms, they haven't changed. Initially as my
body sort of "woke up" as I say, I went gradually from having no pain or
feeling to having more and more pain. I still have decreased sensation in some
areas and hyper or hypo sensation and pain in others. I have B/B issues too.
As time goes on my symptoms still don't really change. My symptoms are so much
like so many others here and that's the reason that I stay. I think this may
be relative to the fact of it being spinal cord injury, not sure. Maybe injury
is injury, and the effects of it remains the same depending upon where on the
cord the injury happens. But, I may be over simplifying things.

I am very pleased to say though, and this is extremely important to me,
that when I do slack off on my exercises and notice my body getting weaker, it
does bounce back when I get back into an exercise routine again. I generally
stop doing my exercises when I get sick and need all the energy and strength
just to get around the house and to the bathroom. And at that point I really
weaken. I know this happens to many of you. If I have the flu or any
infection, it is really hard on my body.

Hi Randy and all TMIC,

I am another one who was originally told that I had TM and am now being
told that I don't, and that's by the same doctor and another as well. I've
never been talked to about MS though. I had only one attack, was paralyzed
from waist to toes within 15 minutes, at lesion T8-10. I even went to 2
different hospitals, as I wanted a second opinion, both with a TM diagnosis.

After about 3 yrs I was told by my first Neuro, who became my treating
Neuro that I didn't have TM. He didn't know what caused the paralysis and no
other information as to why. Not a spinal infarction or stroke, or anything
else. I had trouble with my disability claim and he was the cause so I changed
Neuro's a few of years later and she had MRI's done and told me the same thing.
MRI's have come a long way and the lesion is not there any longer and they
can't see any cause, like a bleed or anything. She looked for evidence of a
bleed because she wanted to rule out the possibility of it happening again and
couldn't find it.

So guys, since I've had 2 Neuro's both tell me that I don't have TM, I
really don't care. I'm sticking with it, and you are just stuck with me. I'm
