For those of you that suffer as I do with hot, sweaty flashes of misery, I
have been to my doc today and again, another
disappointment. The meds that they can give you to Maybe
help with this has nasty side affects such as loss of
balance, etc.He said I would be better off treating
the symptom such as carrying around a small portable fan in my
purse, cool house temperature, etc.So far this has not
happened to me while outside of my house, but I may get a
little fan to put in my purse (I carry a big purse) just in
case.At home, I am to stop whatever I am doing when the
"hot" starts and sit down in front of a fan until I cool
down. My daughter says she has heard from somewhere of
a
cold pack that you put around your neck. It is supposed to
really cool down the body. She is checking that out for me.
I was hoping to have good news for us about the "hots", but not so
much.

Sorry, Janice

I wasn't going to reply to this either, but I have lost most of my feeling down
*there* as well. I was 28 when it happened and do feel cheated out of having a
normal sexual relationship with any guy now. The boyfriend I had at the time
stuck by me but after a year he gave up on the relationship, in part (I think)
because I could not and did not want to have a "sexual" relationship to that
extent. He did not understand how much "damage" TM had caused and was not
willing to "wait" for me to be ready. We broke up and at the time I was upset
but looking back I realized that he was immature and not worth being sad over.
I am still mostly numb there and cannot reach orgasm so sex is frustrating to
say the least.
I am not sure I will ever find a guy who is willing to understand, I hope so. I
am 33 now and don't want to be alone my whole life...

Subject: [TMIC] Re: (TMIC) Sex.

I can't believe that I am going to reply to this, as it's an issue that I just
try hard to avoid, but. okay, so here goes. During my first NMO hit, I
lost all feeling *there*. At first I was hopeful that it would slowly come
back, but my second bad hit sealed the deal. I can remember lying in my
hospital bed trying to get up the nerve to speak with my doc about it. Finally
one day I mentioned it in passing, but didn't really press the matter---I was
too embarrassed. Later that night, one of my neuro nurses came in to sit and
talk with me about the disease, as I was her first NMO patient. We talked a
lot about nerves and nerve damage, and as I was very savvy re: the implications
of having relapsing NMO, we spoke freely. (She's amazing, and I've since had
her as my nurse in the neuro ward, many times.) Finally, I just took a big
swallow and blurted it out. She told me the truth, that in my case it was
unlikely that feeling would return, but that one should still keep hoping that
one day there would be some increase in sensation. She was correct---I have
been numb from my sensory level downwards since 2005. Most of my body still
feels as if it has been shot up with Novocaine.

Anyways, I was shell shocked and actually mourned the loss. To lose something
that is so integral to one's life, is a violation of sorts. It was bad enough
that I had no control over my other bodily functions, but the loss of physical
sexuality was adding insult to injury. I felt as if I had lost my
*person-hood*, and had suddenly become androgynous. I still fight those
feelings, and yes, sometimes I still cry about it. Sexual contact offers an
intimacy like no other. Some of us are more sexual than others, and the loss
can often be the cruelest cut of all.

These days I try hard not to ever even think about it. Whenever I do, I become
extremely angry at what I perceive to be the unfairness of it all, and I lose
sight of what I do still have. I should be very grateful for every day that I
draw a breath---unfortunately, sometimes the negative feelings get the better
of me. For me, it's been a tough loss to deal with.

Okay, signing off before I totally embarrass myself.

Grace

re: Tylenol

Kevin just as a side note, Tylenol IS acetominophen. Tylenol is the brand name
for it.

Weaning off: lower the dose you take by 1/2 for a week then another 1/2 for the
next week then you stop taking it.

Technically
what you were taking should not be a problem when stopping cold turkey
though. What were your symptoms when you tried to stop taking it?

RE: Antidepressants for pain relief

Yes, they are often used for pain relief in low doses. Those used are the
tryciclic antidepressants. I take nortryptaline 20mg at night along with Lyrica.

Way to go Akua !...when I got my DX of TM..I was put on elavil every night
before bed. I was told it was for the chronic pain... But I came to find out it
is a antidepressant. And that was it...I didn't get PT at that time because my
disability was un-diagnosed for several years...my spastic paraplegia was
treated with neurontin..and I had a sleep study because of spasms in the
night..and the results came back with I twitch kick and spasm every 20
seconds..and I have a very low breathing and have to have oxygen at
night.but because I have TM the Doctor said he couldn't tell if I had sleep
apnea or it is the TM causing it.
I too have to dress like a dork and I like the fact of being in the chair I can
hide if I am wet.
When I moved up here..I discovered there isn't many places that are handicap
accessible (up in the high Sierras!!)..so I have had to fight to get
everything!..and I am fixin to join or help people here that are disabled..and
are house bound...So I agree Akua someone needs to teach me how to live like a
paraplegic.

Hi all,
The Transverse Myelitis Network has nothing to do with the TMA or TMA Forums.
It was started by anotehr member here who wanted a site where we could exchange
comments/photos/messages/info in a more "face-to-face" way and there is also a
"Chat" where you can talk to others members who are inline at the time. No one
is asking for you to become a member if you don't want to, it is simply there
as another resource.

should I do???

Hi Guys!

I have been curious about something for a while and since things have kind of
slowed down, want to ask you all what you did
before TM hit and if you were able to go back to it or if you are doing
something new.
I am including even those who just read these emails and don't usually
respond. I would like to hear from everybody and would think all of us would
be interested. I will start:

I was a school nurse's secretary/assistant in a large high school for 19 years.
I absolutely loved it - everyday was different, as
you can imagine working with high schoolers! Our school nurse was gone a lot
to other schools we were responsible for, so
I was left alone quite a bit and handled many different situations. I was well
trained for this and it was great.

I stopped taking an antidepressant about 18
months after getting TM. While I have had ups and downs, I never needed them
again after this point. There may be a time in the future where I will need
something again and as long as you are open minded and not shy to ask for help
again then there is no reason why you can't begin to wean off them.

Not to be a downer or negative BUT it is possible to wiggle your toes and still
NOT get the rest back. BUT you are only 9 months into this, it takes about 2
years to know what the majority of recovery will be. I can wiggle my toes on
the left side yet cannot move my ankle at all... I did get some knee (quad
strength) back and hip as well, but as you see it can "skip" over spots. My
ankle never came back even though my toes did a bit.

Keep working hard in PT and at home. Have you tried using a muscle e-stim
(NMES)? It can help with gaining muscle strength/movement.

Hello, I am Amanda a 30 year
old single mother of two awesome kids, and this is my story about
the worst day of my life! I got up that day and helped my boyfriend
clean his daddy's house, we ate lunch when we were finished, and I went
outside for a smoke. While smoking my cigarette I started having chest
pains, and my right arm was hurting so I went back in and laid on the
couch. About an hour later, or maybe more, I decided to go to the
ER in case I was having a heart attack. They took me back immediately,
but they could find nothing wrong with me. After six hours of tests I
told them the chest pains were probably caused by my GERD (acid reflux)
because it had happened to me before, and I wanted to go on home. After
I left i noticed one of my knees buckled every time I took a step, but
I
didn't think much of it. I went to bed early cause I just didn't feel
good, and I woke up about 11 p.m. because my back was on fire like it
was sunburnt. There was a
> rash across my shoulders and
down my spine. I was feeling really bad, and I told my boyfriend I
needed to go back to the hospital. When I went to get out of bed I
almost fell in the floor, but he caught me. I could not stand so he had
to carry me to the car along with both kids. So here we go, I have to
stop on the way and started throwing up over and over again. I finally
get to my second hospital of the day only to run tests until 6 a.m. and
finally admitted to a room where they left me lay for 12 more hours
without even monitoring me. When the neurologist finally came at 6 p.m.
I was paralyzed from the shoulders down. He said that 2 more hours I
could have died! He transferred me to ICU at another hospital and I was
3 points away on blood oxygen levels from being put on life support. It
was 2 days before I was diagnosed with TM at C6-T3 and also
T9-T10. I received 5 days of IVIG, and 10 days of solumedrol, and
an antiviral. I stayed in ICU for 8
> days, 2 days on the
neuro floor, and 6 weeks of inpatient rehab. I still go to therapy now.
I got a partial recovery, my arms returned but not so much my hands. My
trunk and legs remain paralyzed but I can wiggle my toes! It has been 9
months now and who knows what could happen! Maybe they will figure out
a
cure one

You can ask your PT what models she has used/liked, or what they use at the
clinic and you can try one out. All NMES units have the same settings for
muscle strengthening. Some have more pre-programmed options. I suggest getting
one that does BOTH NMES and TENS. I have a combo machine which is easy to use
and program. It's a bit fancier than I need but I got it from a company that
sells off extra medical equipment/refurbished. Mine was new and worth $800, I
paid $200.

I too have a NMES/TENS combo unit.

Not all NMES units can be used as TENS though, you have to see what the
specifications are for whatever machine you get/look into. The NMES units are
also much more expensive, so if you don't plan on using it to strengthen you
muscles then it may not be worth getting.

Hello All,
I thought I might mention this
regarding the TENS unit. If you are going to be investing in this, you
might want to consider the EMS unit instead. A TENS unit is for "nerve
stimulation" to help with pain. The EMS unit is a "muscle stimulator",
used to waken up sleeping muscles or prevent atrophy from paralysis. It
has a different "wave"; however, the EMS unit can be used as both the EMS and
the TENS. The TENS can only be used as a TENS, so if you get the EMS you
are getting double the bang for your buck.

I just got the EMS unit and it is too
soon to tell, but I think that it is going to be of some benefit. (I was
totally paralyzed from the waist down 12 years ago on December 30, 1996,
but did get a lot of recovery.)

Take care,
Debbie

Amanda and

 When you
think of the "2-year mark", don't be too disappointed if you are not where
you want to be. I let it be a big thing
for

me and
was panicky when 2 years came and I wasn't where I wanted to be and
felt there would be no more recovery.

Recovery still
happens. Your body doesn't know 2 years from
butkus! The doc's are only saying the biggest hunk
of

recovery comes
"a b o u t" then. There will be more.
Also, I think something happens in the adjustment to your body.
You

begin to accept,
but are still working for improvement. At least, that was the
way it is for me at 28 months of TM.

RE: DVT, are Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Basically, CLOTS in the vein that block it and can also break away and travel
up in your blood stream. Very dangerous as it can go to your lungs or heart or
brain and this can kill you. When you get DVT they put you on blood thinners to
get rid of them and then usually you have to take another type to decrease the
chance of getting more. People who do not move around much/are paralyzed tend
to get them. It is important to try to move around as much as possible. If you
can flex your ankle do it every hour to keep the blood moving so that it is not
in stasis. You can also wear TED stockings during the day, these help as well.
Keeping your feet elevated too. You'll know if you have one, there will be
pain, redness, swelling in the area it is situated in. You may also see a large
bruise.
People who fly long distances and don't get up to walk around are also prone to
getting one.

Hello Rob and all,

I am so glad that you sent in this email today. I think it just may be
the "kick in the butt" that I need to get out of my bedroom and on with my
life. I am still kind of in a funk, not as bad as the usual winter funk, but
still haven't been able to totally bring myself out of it either. I know that
the state of the economy and politics have been consuming too much of my life
recently, and with my hubby retiring last year, as the saying goes, twice as
much hubby and half as much money. Could not be truer than these days, as if
we could have known, he'd still be working and we'd still be preparing for his
retirement.

I have been reading most of the postings on TMIC, but not responding to
some that I know that I should have. For this, I am apologizing to the newbies
and to those that I could have possibly given some support.

Rob, I will try, no, I WILL, to take your words to heart and start LIVING
my life the way I used to, and used to tell others to as well, and that is to
the fullest extent as possible. TM should not define us.

Hugs to all, Barbara A in Auburn, CA, where the sun is shining and there is a
nest of baby birds outside of my bedroom window. The sounds are so sweet.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your message, and
I'm so glad I could improve your day with mine to you. I am sending
this message to the whole group, so they can see what's up with me as
  well.

I really am not feeling sorry for myself. I am not sleeping
well, I wake up so many times at night with my legs in pain, once I finally
get to sleep. It is at least 3am before my legs settle down enough to
get to sleep for a bit, unless I take a Vicodin. I usally sleep for
anything between 15 minutes and an hour on many nights, and this goes on
until
anytime between 10am and noon, when I finally drag my butt out of bed. I
am exhausted. I take a Vicodin usually 3 days a week, just to catch up
on some sleep. I need to use some of my marijuana tincture at
night or a brownie on more nights, but that doesn't always
work. Between the two, if one of these methods is used almost every
night, I should be better off in the sleep category. I lowered my daily
dosage of Neurontin over the past year and my pain level has increased.
My Neurontin dosage was up pretty high at 5200/day, and I really wanted
it lower! ed, so I was able to lower 3600/day now, but I am paying the
price during the night. I also went on Lyrica at 50/mg
  3x/day.

My husband retired last year and became interested in politics
for the first time in his life, so he watches the news a lot. It's on so
much of the day, and then he watches the History Channel, Military
Channel and CARTOONS!! He's always watched some cartoons, but it's
just too much, so after I do what I need to and sit out in the family room
for
a bit, I leave the area. I just can't stand it. He also uses

Janice--what is NMO?

Hello
Janice,

What is
NMO? NMO is extremely rare, much more so than TM from other causes
or Multiple Sclerosis. It's a particularly devastating
neuroimmunological disease of the central nervous system. It
consists of repeated attacks of LETM (Longitudinal Extensive
Transverse Myelitis) and Optic Neuritis. Sixty per cent of
patients will also present with brain lesions during the course of
their
disease, though not in a pattern consistent with MS. Within five
years, fifty per cent of patients will already be permanently blind in
at least one eye (Often bilaterally.) and permanently paralyzed in at
least one limb (Often more.) Within that same time frame,
estimates say that 33% of patients will expire during an acute
attack. It's a BCell mediated disease in the presence of an
autoimmune antibody called the NMO IgG (Current research
is attempting to establish whether or not the antibody itself,
is pathological.) Unlike TM or MS, our lesions are
inordinately long (Covering three segments of cord or more.) and often
present with necrosis and cavitations. Also, unlike MS patients,
we do not have the option of *riding out an attack*, but need
medical intervention immediately. Most neuros have not heard of
it, let alone seen or treated a case, so the majority of us end up at
the larger teaching and research facilities.

I'm one of
the lucky ones. I still walk, and can still see. Many of the
members of our Advocacy Group are already chairbound, bed fast,
blind, and more than a few are vented. We have also lost members
since our launching in 2006. It's not a walk in the
park.

Mr. Siegel (President of
the TMA) has been instrumental in the growth and direction of
our small group of patients. Not only does he offer great
insight, but gives me those much needed pep talks whenever I am
overwhelmed by the seriousness of it all. He will be publishing a
seperate directory for NMO patients very shortly. I will be
forever indebted to him for his support and help.

Hope this
helps to explain.
Gracie

Hi,
I use a TENS and MNES machine (mine is combo, so I can use it either for Pain
relief with the TENS or for building muscle with the MNES settings). I got it
from a company that sells refurbished or extra medical equipement. The machine
I got is worth $800+, I got it for $230. The TENS works well when I have pain,
mostly for my lower back and butt. The NMES I used on part of my quad that
needed "help" in building muscle, it worked a bit, I have used it for otehr
muscles too and it does work, but you have to use it consistently to build any
muscle...

I was given the option of the implanted stimulator also. BUT, since I'm
alleric to so many things AND I had a "botched" surgery just 3 months before TM
came to stay, I was reluctant to have surgery. ALSO, I wasn't certain it would
work. SO the TENS seemed like the best solutions and it does help!

I don't use a tens. I use spinal cord stimulator that is implanted in my back
hip. It stops most of the pain before it reaches my
brain telling me that I have pain. Very similar to the tens. It helps with
pain and with stamina. Janice

Hi friends, I just read the message about being told it was bogus to use an
electric shock like device. My husband jim has had TM since May 2005. A church
friend who is a physical therapist suggested Jim try it, we had a tens unit
from awhile back to help with pain. George told Jim where to place the pads to
help the hamstring. In less than a week he went from 20% to 75% movement. Its
to early to be sure how much movement he will get, but he is certain its not
bogus. We will keep you all posted, ca

When I was in rehab, there was a guy who went in the pool with his Foley and a
leg bag. You don't want to risk disconnecting it and clamping it as that may
not hold and if so you could get a nasty infection.
Ask what your MD has to say or call a rehab hospital and see what they usually
do.

I was paralyzed at T1 completely at first. Some came back, some did not. The
left leg didn't come back enough to be functional without a full length leg
brace for support.
I can move my knee and hip, but my quads are not strong enough to
hold my knee enough to walk. I have no movement at all in my ankle, so
drop foot is a real problem. My brace goes from my thigh to the bottom
of my foot. Without it I cannot walk.

If you look in this blog post I wrote 3 yrs ago, click on KAFO, you can see
sort of what mine looks like.

I have travelled by plane alone and with my boyfriend (now ex).
Last time I went alone was from Montreal QC, Canada to Seattle, WA. Took 2
planes there and 2 back. (Mtl to Toronto to Seattle there, Seattle to
Vancouver BC to Mtl back). The long rides were 6 hrs, the short was 1.5 hrs
(Mtl-TO) and 30 min (SeaTac to Van).

I travel with my wheelchair and
bring my cane and wear my long leg brace. When I travel alone I usually get
bumped to FIRST Class for FREE! I ask for seats close to the bathroom (and
often they figure since I am alone I will need more help as I am in a chair,
and they have more time to help when in 1st class).

The first time I
travelled alone I was nervous about going through security, the only time
they
ever gave me problems was going from Mtl to TO to Seattle. The Mtl security
(US side) was ok really, but one lady there wanted me to take off my brace...
um, I need to take off my shoes/pants.. I just looked at them and said, it's
a
brace that surrounds my leg, no hollow parts, I can't hide anything there. I
was pissed, not b/c that they wanted to check it, that's fine, but it was her
attitude that really got to me. She was rude and talked like I was "mentally
challenged". Um , hello, I may be in a wheelchair, but I am perfectly capable
  of making conversation! Grrr...

Don't let the difficulties of
travelling stop you! It sounds harder than it is, and I was plenty worried,
but it turned out just fine and I had a great flight! (the attendents were so
very nice and helpful and it doesn't hurt that I look under 18

Heather I have found that sometimes you just have to do what you have to do!!
I flew alone to be with my mom when she was in her late 80's and I was so glad
that I did. Everyone was so kind and helpful. I too use a walker and sometimes
a cane! Long trips are awful but my son is getting married in Lima, Peru in
November and I am definitely going to be there! I have hand controls on my car
because I do not have any real control over my legs. All rental cars have
handicapped equipped cars. And they are not allowed to charge extra for the
device. There are different types but it's so easy, you catch on very quickly.
Tho it sounds like you have lots of people to ferry you around. Have a
wonderful time!! I love it when our family gets together! Cherish those moments!
Again, ENJOY!!!Trudy

to ferry me around. I can only drive with the left foot accelorator.
It is a four hour flight which seems quite long. I also take my air/gel
filled seat cushion from my wheelchair. It is 5 1/2 yrs old now and still
going strong. (knock on wood). Without this cushion I would have a
terrible time trying to sit for that length of time. I'm s ready to
get off the plane when we land. I do not need to change planes or anything
so that is another good thing. I have found that everyone involved with air
travel has so far been really good. Oops. with one exception. Last
fall I flew back east first and my husband followed a week later. Going
through security here in Calgary my WalkAide set off the security and I had to
take it off the leg, explain to them what it was etc etc. Wires, batteries
etc. Almost missed my flight. This time I have located the booklet
on it and will keep it handy. Last fall I misplaced it just prior to
packing. I actually had it packed. Then decided to take a different
carry-on piece of luggage and could not for the life of me figure out where the
booklet went. I found it in January this year when I was moving some
things around to do with our luggage. NOW I know where it
is. Of course with the memory problems that we have (well some of us
have) with TM I could forget where it is by that time. LOL

Temperature Regulation:
http://www.apparelyzed.com/temperature.html

Temperature
  Regulation
A normal, healthy human is able to maintain a constant
body temperature of approximately 98.6F despite the temperature
of the environment. In a hot environment, the body sends a signal
to the brain via the spinal cord to say the body is overheating,
the brain then sends a signal back down the spinal cord and tells
the body to cool itself by perspiration which evaporates and
cools
the skin. In cold weather, the body senses the lower temperature
and our brain tells us to put more clothes on to warm ourselves
  up.
Most people with complete spinal cord injuries do
not sweat below the level of the injury and many quadriplegics
cannot
even sweat above the injury (even though they may sweat due to
autonomic
dysreflexia). With loss of the ability to sweat or vasoconstrict
  within affected dermatomes the patient
becomes poikilothermic and needs careful control of their
environmental
conditions. Therefore, if a high paraplegic or quadriplegic is in
an outside temperature over 90 F, especially when the humidity is
high, the body temperature will begin to rise. Likewise in a cold
environment, the body may not be able to get the messages through
to the brain that the body is cooling down, and if left
untreated,
the person will soon become hypothermic.
This also applies to those with "incomplete" spinal cord injuries,
though it may be to a lesser degree, but not necessarily so.The feeling that
our legs are on fire or ice cold (when they are not) is due to neuropathic
pain/sensations, not temperature regulation. The burning feeling may be brought
on by overheating, but as noted by many of us here, it is a constant whether we
get hot or not...

Marketers of these products make claims that açai provides increased energy

heart health, improved sleep, and reduction of cholesterol levels. More dubious
claims include reversal of diabetes and other chronic illnesses, as well as

As of March 2009, there are no controlled studies backing up any of these

I have my doubts as well..
http://www.cellmedicine.com/locations.asp

and what does "Johns Hopkins affiliate" really mean?

In any case they don't use other people's stem cells. They harvest some from
the patient themselves and "purify" them to be used..

I am not sure how legit their "results" are, they can say anything since they
do not answer to anyone!

As far as the two Canadian sisters who went to China for stem cell treatment in
2006 (and spent a HUGE fortune), they actually did not get much return of
function, a bit in their hands.. and that is the latest report (January 2009).

I would wait and see what new developments happen in North America before
forking over that kind of money in another country.

Not sure what this whole diatribe/fight is about, but in defense of the
http://transversemyelitis.ning.com/ site. It was strated by a few people who
wanted to document THEIR TM fight and wanted a place where they could have
"live" chat. There are links to the transverse myelitis site and and all info
is linked form there. NO one is trying to "steal" people away from the TMA
site. I help Jim Lubin run the TMA site site, moderate and answer questions. I
do the same on the ning.com site. AGAIN no is FORCED to join either site! And
yes there ARE 9 pages of members (we have 188 members currently), many of whom
belong to the TMA site, as ewll as various Facebook sites and Yahoo.
Does it really matter if we belong to MORE than ONE site?
Honestly, this is childless and not needed on this list.

I enjoy hearing from members on ALL sites, I rarely post on here myself, but do
when I feel I can help out. I mean no disrespect or harm, but felt that it had
to be cleared up a bit for those of us who do belong to various TM sites.

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO DEMANDING AND WANT

THE FACE BOOK SITE AND THE NING.COM IS MORE

I WANT TO KNOW IF YOU JUST CAN START A SITE

I KNOW THEIRS A YAHOO SITE TOO. I DID NOT

I KNOW FROM YOU THAT YOU WANT THE COALITION TO

I ALSO KNOW THE THINGS YOU TOLD ME, I DO NOT

THAT IS WHY I AM NO LONGER A REP FOR THE

AND YOUR ON IT BIG TIME TO SAY THEY DID IT FOR ALL THE FIGHTING ON THIS SITE.
THERE WILL BE DIFFERENCE OF OPINIONS THAT IS LIFE GUNNY.
IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY STOMACH. IT ALSO DOES
ALOT OF OTHER TM MEMBERS I HAVE CHATTED WITH.
YOU ASKED ME TO DO THINGS WELL DEMANDED BECAUSE

I HAVE NEVER ACCUSED YOU OF THAT BUT YOU DID
MAKE A BIG MESS WITH THE LAST RAFFLE THAT JUDE AND I PAID FOR THE COMPUTER AND

Ok Frank, here's my vote. Since it's Saturday, it probably would be
best if you get some rest, and of course you would rest much better with the
martinis. Follow same program tomorrow if desired. Then on Monday go
to doctor w/ X-Ray and do what doctor tells you to do! sounds pretty fair
to me.

I'm quite sure you'll sleep well tonight after your liquid refreshments

RE: Camp

It would be nice to have an "adult" Camp. The symposia is too expensive for
many, and there are no activities many people would like to try, that could be
offered at a "Camp".
I also belong to another group for children and adults (and their families)
with a Brachial Plexus Injury and they hold a Camp every 2 years, with
activities for BOTH adult and kids, meetings/info session/demonstrations... I
went for the first time in 2007 and had a blast! They too offer 'scholarships'
for people who can't afford it, and get donations from private
donations/organizations/stores...
It would be worth looking into maybe, see how many people are interested. Look
for various places that offer disabled activities/rooms...

Just a thought!

  Hello Dear Ones,

A short while ago there was a new member who
asked about where on his/her body their lesion was. They new
enough to say, for instance, mine is at T3. But, they weren't sure where
that area is on the spinal cord.

I was wondering if that person's question had
gotten answered. I don't recall a discussion on a topic like that,
but is that something we need to discuss? (Instead of jokes, jokes,
  jokes)

I have been thinking about how and when it is
that I get myself in trouble writing something confusing and it is when I
  get bored. What about you?

By the way, the answer to that question could
have been by giving the person a link so that they would learn to do
their
own research, or we might do the research ourselves and have one or more
people offer a discussion on the topic.

I have two questions: Did that member ever get an answer to their
question?

Or do I need to get busy and help
  them out?

Many prayers coming your way. Please excuse my memory,
but do you also have ITP? My little granddaughter has it and it has been a
battle for years. The doctors wanted to remove her spleen at one time, but
my daughter really wanted to wait. Her blood count did finally come up to
50,000 but it still goes up and down. Are you still on the anti-rejection
medication? If not, what is the next step? Will the doctors try
IVIG?

Please keep us posted as you know we need to know how you're
doing. Continued prayers and positive thoughts. Try to get lots of

2008-12-05 Thread marieke dufresne

Hi, sorry to correct you Janh, but I think either you or your neuro was
mistaken..

RE: Banding VS l'Hermitte's sign
These are two different things.
L'Hermittes sign is the name given to an electric shock-like sensation felt.
Typically, the electric shock-like sensation radiates from the neck downwards
and lasts for a very short duration; usually less than a second. The sensations
can repeat indefinitely so that it might feel almost continuous.

The areas affected by Lhermitte's sign are usually the arms and / or the legs,
although the sensations can radiate to the trunk.
Lhermitte's sign gets its name from the person who first characterized it,
Jacques Jean Lhermitte, and is sometimes (rarely) known as 'barbers chair
phenomenon'.

This is because of the way that Lhermitte's response is triggered; by flexing
the neck forwards. When the head moves in this way, the electric shock like
sensations are triggered.

BANDING: (most common in MS hence the MS HUG name)
What Causes the "MS Hug?"

It is caused by a lesion on the spinal cord and is technically classified as a
neuropathic pain called a “paresthesia,” which refers to any abormal sensation.
The sensation itself is the result of tiny muscles between each rib
(intercostal muscles) going into spasm. These muscles have the job of holding
our ribs together, as well as keeping them flexible and aiding in movement,
like forced expiration.
What Does It Feel Like?

Like many MS symptoms, the “MS hug” feels different for different people – it
also feels different in the same people on different days or at different times
of day. It can be:
As low as the waist or as high as the chest; rarely it can be felt as high as
the shoulders and neck
Focused in one small area (usually on one side or in the back) or go all the
way around the torso
Worse when fatigued or stressed
Present in “waves” lasting seconds, minutes or hours or can be steady for
longer periods of time
Described as sharp pain, dull pain, burning pain, tickling, tingling, a
crushing or constricting sensation or intense pressure.

As you can see they are two different things with two very different causes.

Marieke, RN
TM @ T1 since 2004

That band is called L'Hermitte's and one of my doctors told me it's where the
"break"
in nerves were..that it essentially was the nerve endings trying to find a
connection...
I think that is an over-simplified explanation so I'd comprehendI had
it so bad
that at times I thought I wouldn't be able to breathe..I thought it might
be the bra-
God getting even with me for hating bras!! It finally 'went away' but returns
when I've overdone or have let myself get too tired. It no longer is as strong
as in the beginning
so just know that time will help!

Hi Jude, I can help you understand the "why can someone walk yet not feel.."
It's because motor nerves and sensory nerves are TWO different pathways. So
it's possible for the sensory path to be destroyed, yet have the motor path
remain intact.
For me, my right leg feels touch but not pain (or not much) and not
temperature, but I have full motor function. My left leg is paralyzed almost
completely, yet I can feel pain and temp on that side, though light touch I
don't feel (only I feel it in a few spots).

Great news the doc says that it isn't ms. The facial nerves are inflamed but
the brain stem is ok. Theyu don't knw the cause but believe it is an ear
infection that attacked the nervous system. But it isn't a nuro problem per
say. The steriods seem to be working. They also have a better ENT going to look
at me. They say that I will probably have to have surgery on inner ear. But
that is left up to the ENT.

The leg muscles in her leg are shortening and

  This
  really makes sense.

You couldn't
get a job at McDonalds and become district manager after 143 days of
  experience.

You couldn't become chief of surgery after 143 days of
  experience of being a surgeon.

You couldn't get a job as a teacher
and be the superintendent after 143 days of experience.

You
couldn't join the military and become a colonel after 143 days of
  experience.

You couldn't get a job as a reporter and become the
nightly news anchor after 143 days of
  experience.

BUT

'From the time Barack Obama was sworn in
as a United State Senator, to the time he announced he was forming a
Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in
  the Senate.

That's
how many days the Senate was actually in session and
  working.

After
143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be Commander
  In Chief, Leader of the
  Free World 143 days.

We all have to start somewhere. The
senate is a good start, but after 143 days, that's all it is -- a
  start.

And strangely, a large sector of the American public is
okay with this and campaigning for him.
We wouldn't accept this
in our own line of work, yet some are okay with this for the President of
  the United States of America?

Come on folks, we are not
voting for the next American Idol!

Please,
please forward this before it's too
  late

And I too use TENS. I use it on my lower back actually, when I do my 8 hr
shifts at the hospital and I am sore/pain. Works very well to decrease my pain

I switched to Lyrica as Neurontin just wasn't working well enough for me
anymore. I was on 3600mg of Neurontin and now take 300-450mg Lyrica a day with
NO side effects, whereas the Neurontin was affecting my concentration. I was
also on Baclofen and Zanaflex, for spasms/spasticity, Florinef and Amatine, for
my LOW blood pressure Nortryptaline, for pain at night, Senokot and Colace,
Bisacodyl suppository for bowel, oxybutynin for bladder. As well Naproxyn or
Relpax for migraines. I now no longer take the Zanaflex as unfortunatly it was
causing my upper body to weaken (good arm was turning to uselessness).

It was amantadine. A medication that helps to
lessen flu symptoms if taken right away. I believe it is also given to
people who can't get a flu shot to prevent the flu.

Hi Jim,

I have to say that I don't do the poor me thing. I do, once in a great while,
wish that I was in a body that didn't ache so much and have a little pity
party. However, I've never wished my TM on another person and I know that
there are always others out there that are in worse shape than myself. When I
am having a pity party, I generally come onto TMIC and read some emails and get
over it pretty quickly.

I have to say that if I had to get something - that at least it was something
where the people are so easy to get along with and the information that we are
able to access from the TMIC is so valuable to all of us. It's like saying
that we are sorry that somebody had to get TM but glad that they found TMIC.
All thanks to you Jim.

Big warm hugs to you, Barbara A

Jeanne,

Your comment was very nice, but I mean it from the heart. When I
first got my TM my family told me to please, not to go onto the TM website for
the time being. That the info on the site was not optimistic and the
people on the TMIC even had some pretty poor outcomes. I made this
promise, and I only did therapy and listened to my doctors. When
I first came into the TMIC I lingered for a few weeks. It was hard to hear
about some of the stories, as I was starting to get a decent recovery.
>From paralysis from waist to toes, I had begun walking with a walker, so that
was looking ok for me at that point, and hopefully more to come.

TMIC really made me feel a part of a community and not alone with this
crappy TM. I didn't know anyone else who had TM, so this was my only
contact with anyone who had my kind of limitations who could help to teach me
how to deal with all of it. Mentally, I thought I was ok, but I
wasn't. I didn't think I needed anti-depressants, but I did. I
thought if I could get back to work all would be ok with me, so that's where my
emphasis was.

I pushed myself to go back to work, although there were a few on TMIC who
tried to encourage me not to. I didn't have the energy to do it, and
really didn't have the energy to do work and therapy, so my therapy
suffered. That wasn't the brightest thing I could have done. I was a
terrible employee, but my boss was so wonderful, allowing me to work when I
could, at the office and at home. It took me at least 2x as long to
accomplish a task as it used to, as I didn't have the concentration to handle
things properly. It took me to totally crash to realize that I couldn't do
my therapy and work. In order to mentally handle it, I finally
admitted to myself that I wasn't going to wake up one morning and not have TM,
so I called my doc and quit working and went on a disability leave of
absence once again, this tim

I have been on it for 4 years, I am on quite high doses of it and it helps,
though I wish I did not havr to take it at all. It really lowers my blood
pressure and worsens my orthostatic hypotension. If you increase your dosage be
sure to do it slowly over a period of up to 3 weeks, this allows your body to
adjust to it and the possible side effects.

Spasms vs Spastic :
Spasm: is a sudden, involuntary contraction of a muscle, a group of muscles,
or a hollow organ, or a similarly sudden contraction of an orifice. It is
sometimes accompanied by a sudden burst of pain,
but is usually harmless and ceases after a few minutes. Spasmodic
muscle contraction may also be due to a large number of medical
conditions, however, including the dystonias.

Spastic: The term generally originates from spasticity, a medical condition
characterized by hypertonia, or a high degree of muscle tightness. Spasticity
underlies spastic diplegia and many other forms of cerebral palsy.

Spasms come and go.. being spastic, like your leg means that the muscle DOES
not know how to relax at all, when put into action, so to speak. Like when your
MD held your leg up and it stays there and/or slowly lowers without you doing
any of the work.

The baclofen will help with this and can improve your walking ability (if you
are able to walk).
The most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; fatigue; headache; nausea; sleeplessness.
Your body will become accustomed to this and you start at a low dose in any
case, and titrate up slowly to be able to adjust.

Meloxicam is for your arthritis... it's an NSAID (nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drug)
The most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; gas; headache; heartburn; nausea;
stomach upset; trouble sleeping.

Ok - what's the scoop on these drugs. Have any of you all taken them? Did
they help? Where there any significant side effects? I was sent to a
bone doc. to have a look. He wants me to try baclofen for spasms, (i
didn't know that I was having them - everyone else says that I'm not have
spasms - I'm so confussed on the term spasms. - first neuro talked about my
legs being spastic because they wouldn't move - he pick them up and the right
leg would stick in mid area lol - he'd have to push it back down. When I
mentioned "spasm" later, everyone would look at me oddly and say that I wasn't
having spasms. Now this guy is giving me meds for spasms and says that my right
leg shows signs of spasticity) He said my vert was great - mild
degeneration in mid T and at L-5 S-1 - which I already knew about. The
'arthritis' is
genetic/ "getting older" he said - but it is unusual for my age. He said my
2001 car accident didn't have anything to do with it - but my chiro told me in
01 that it would come in time because it almost always shows up in a few years
after a major collision. Anyway - what's the scoop on all these meds. before I
decide to go ahead and take them I just wanted find out if it is worth the
time.

I will not lie, nursing school is hard, freaking hard! Not just because of the

now that I have had 4 days a week of clinical... My back hurts, my leg (good

true you can choose where you want to work when you are done, you still have to
be able to get through school and it's requirements in clinical (skills as well
as required hours). When I started I had no idea if I would be able to get

My last day was a year last Sept. The TM hit 5/2005 and I was determined I
could get right back to work as soon as I could stand and move with a cane, by
golly! It actually set me back a bit because I pushed myself too hard.

The best way is to go on line. If I was starting out, I would go to the
college and go into the nursing department and talk to one of the advisors.
They would be wonderful in getting you started. You will have your parallels
that you'll need to get out of the way. You'll need to get your school
transcripts and you will get credit for a lot you've already taken in the
maths, sciences, and humanities. Some classes you can probably challenge and
may not even need to take them. All of these things your advisor can help you
with. The biggest part is walking through that college door to get started!
You may go into the program thinking you want to go in a certain field and
halfway through change your mind which is perfectly all right! You can't
always tell until you get into your studies and clinicals and see what is
actually done.

I wish you ALL of the best in whichever direction you decide upon!! Please
keep me up to date on your decision?? Jeanne

Thanks for the reply Jeanne, how many years has it been since you had to quit
your head nursing job?And what is the best way to get just how many
different fields a person can specialize in , in the health care field?

moving around working with paper and charts but there is still a lot of moving
and walking.

Also, there are the hospitals, etc. that have gone to the longer shifts but
then you get a longer period of time that you have off. They are also the ones

Rob,

I had an incident starting in January of
this year. My legs started tingling and burning, then my arms started,
which I never had before. Very Scary! I went for 2 MRI's, one of the
brain and one cervical. Nothing new in the scans. But I did show
very bad sinus problems. I was on an antibiotic and about 1 week
after the symptoms started to go away. My whole body felt inflamed for
almost 2 months. Then day by day I started feeling better. I am
starting again with the sinus problem and starting to tingle in my back. I
have an appointment with my doctor on 4/7. I had sinus infection in the
beginning. Have you been sick lately or completely run down. Those
are the 2 things that make me worse.

re Jude... My mom had open heart surgery last year and ended up with an MRSA
infection that attacked the bone (which is called osteomyeltis btw), she had 2
courses of vancomycin, and then 3 rounds of oral meds b/c there was one pocket
that was still filling up with pus and whatnot. MRSA is quite common and i's
getting nastier. I am currently a 3rd year nursing student (graduate in 6
weeks) and work on a Cardiac Surgery & Neurosurgery floor and we get many
patients' with MRSA infections after. It's not fun.
I wish Jude well.

Rob, Get it checked out. I know you are scared. All of us that have had
relapses were scared too. But the sooner you see the Dr. the better. Let us
know how you are doing, ok! And just so you know I have had times where my
symptoms increased and it was a relapses and times when it wasn't. So it is
really hard to tell.

Need a little help! After more than 10 years I started having new
symptoms in my left (the good one) leg. My left leg has always had pins &
needles…but this weekend I had the burning (freezing) sensation and although it
has not gotten worse..it has not gone back to what I call normal. I have e
mailed Dr. Kerr and hopefully he will supply some in sight. I also want to
thank members on the list who have given me names of Nerros in New Jersey that
they use and are happy with…I will contact at least one of them. In all honesty
I am somewhat afraid! I thought I have been dealing with TM in as positive way
as is possible. I just don't know if I could handle another episode especially
if It requires hospitalization.
I know all of us do not have one day that is exactly the same as the
previous one…but have any of you experienced new feelings (good or bad) that
was not a result of a relapse? If this continues I doubt if I can continue
working as the discomfort does not allow me to concentrate on my work. I can
only focus on the new feeling of burning!
Thank you for any insight you can provide.

I just got off the phone with Jude.can't add much to what Pam has
already told us. they have her on Vancomycin which is "the" antibiotic for
MRSA along with seven other antibiotics. They will do a six week course
and then take a break and then another six week course of the antibiotics.
The infection is in the bone and blood stream. She told me if this doesn't
work and it turns septic then it's "bye-bye."
Jude knows what's waiting for her on the other side if that happens so she
is really handling all of this well. She was cheerful with meeven got
her to laugh once. :-)
She started getting sleepy so I let her go with the promise I would call in
a few days.
Dave is retired as of today and they are both happy about that.Jude is
planning on spending some quality time with him now.

Please keep those cards, letters, etc. heading her waythey mean so much
to her
but especially keep lifting her in prayer.

Hi all,
Yup Heather is right!
In spinal cord lesions, it is "normal" to not sweat below the level of injury.
Also, your body has a hard time adjusting to temp changes and where the nerve
damage is you can get blotchy skin when it gets too hot...
Take a look at this site, very good info to be found!

Hi Linda,

I don't seem to sweat below my lesion
at T8 - T10. I think that was mentioned on the TM Forum at one point and
Marieke said that with spinal chord injuries a person doesn't sweat below the
lesion.

  Hi Jeanne,
I also have the band 24 hours a day. Mine
is T4-T5 area. That is where my lesion is in my spinal cord. I
also get a lot of tingling on the left side of that area. The grease
line I was talking was actually a very greasy to the touch line
  .
As the numbness was ascending so was the grease
line. It was around my waist and moved upward until it stopped around
T4-T5. Another strange thing I experienced was a few weeks in, I had to
rub off a lot of dead skin on both legs. Very Weird! It doesn't
sound like any one else had these things. Anybody have a problem with
  not sweating in affected areas?

re: Jude and C Diff (not C Biff)...
It's a GI problem where your normal flora is killed off due to various
antibiotics and you produce mass amounts of foul, smelly, diarrhea. C Diff is
short for Clostridium Difficile.
http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/c-difficile/index-eng.php
It is a very common problem we have here where I am in Montreal, QC. I had it
when I was first in hospital with TM after I had been on antibiotics for a UTI.
It was hell and now working as a student nurse I am surrounded by it all the
time. She will now have to be careful when she is on any antibiotics that can
set it off.

  Candy,

We have been to so many Neurologists and they all just send her away with a
follow up appt in hopes she'll get better on her own and with therapy. I get so
frustrated because no one knows what happened or they say it is
psychological...I know there is something wrong and get no help so I have been
researching a lot. It is hard to find a Pediatric Neurologist in this area that
will take the time.
What exactly is found in the Spinal Tap fluid? She has had one done. I have a
large 3 inch binder full of all of her medical records.
In October she was fitted for HKAFO leg braces that go from her waist to her

Has your daughter had a Spinal Tap? There is a protein in the fluid that points

that found the leisons but the MRI tech. Then it was in for another MRI
without/with contrast.

Dr. Kerr at John Hopkins is the leader in the field of TM. My neuro consulted
with Dr.'s at John Hopkins but only after my insistance. Has your daughter's
neuro done the same? The John Hopkins website has a direct line for doctors for
consulations.

I waited 5 or 6 days for a diagnosis while
given every test known was ran. Other than TM, I'm in good health and I know
alot of what I don't have. Hopefully, your daughter's doctor(s) have done the

As long as your INR is within the range it is supposed to be in then there is
no problem. Continue doing as you are and advise your MD that this is what you
have been doing for 2 yrs with no problems, but if the INR were to get too high
then you should cut down/stop taking them.
Also too many leafy green (dark green) are not recommended when on Coumadin...

  Hi
  Guys,

  You know,
there are several of us who need to write in caps, due to severe vision
problems. Though I don't use caps, I do use large font. I have to,
in order to see what I am writing. Recently, one of the long
term members of the TMIC, who is also a personal friend of mine, received
an extremely obnoxious email regarding this. (Complete with
*language*.) You know, this little group is for the most
part---wonderful. It was the very first site that I discovered
at the time of my NMO diagnosis, and I have been made to feel at home
here. It's like having a virtual *family*. This
unnecessary haranguing, of a long standing member, has left a very bad taste
in my mouth. Think of it this way: In the big scheme of
things, say, ten years from now, is it really going to *matter* if
someone had to use caps in order to communicate? I know that I,
for one, will certainly not be thinking about something as trivial as that
whenever I prepare to meet my Maker. Let's put it to rest, okaye?

I do not post often to this email group (mostly post on the TMA site itself). I
just wanted to share some good news! I got a letter from school (I am in my

Nursing. It's based on clinical skills/interaction with patients, grades and
giving back to the school/dept, like volunteering. It's worth $200. I am so
happy and excited! The awards ceremony is Nov 22. I can't wait!

A few months ago I installed grab bars on the wall on each side of
the toilet. When they are not being used, they fold up against the
wall. Each bar is a loop with the bottom offset inward and below the
top - I use the lower level initially and switch to the upper to
transfer to my walker or the wheelchair.

The bars are made by Healthcraft Products of Ottawa, models PT-WR32R
and PT-WR32L.

I bought the pair from ActiveForever for 342.70 including shipping,
but I cannot find the web reference. Here's another source:

These bars are STURDY. They are speced at 350 pounds each. I know I
have lurched against them and dragged myself up by pulling.

I recommend them.

Re: [TMIC] A new member Jim Belz, and his wife Carol, active Secretary

2007-08-08 Thread marieke dufresne

Hi,
I should introduce myself too. I am 31, I was 28 when I got TM in March
2004. I was paralyzed from the breastbone down too, at T1. I spent 10 weeks
at the Montreal General as I managed to get C.Diff and had some GI problems
after that that had to be sorted out before I was strong enough for Rehab. I
then spent 8 months at the Montreal Rehab Institute where I went from being
in a wheelchair to walking with a long leg brace and a walker, to the leg
brace and canadian crutches to where I am now, a Cane and the brace of
course!

I went back to work 6 months after being paralyzed, taught pre-k from my
wheelchair. That February 2005 I got a GI problem again, partially brought
on by stress, by fatigue, and the flu and ended up in the hospital for 3
weeks again! When I got out I decided that's it, I am going back to school
to do what I really want! Nursing. Sounds crazy right? I was still in a
chair, was able to walk and stand but not for any long lengths of time. I
applied and got in to Dawson College. All they knew what that I used a cane
and a leg brace and of course the reason why I was paralyzed.

When June rolled around and school ended on the Friday, I decided that by
Monday I would NOT use the chair anymore, UNLESS it was for the mall or any
long distance type thing. And that Monday that is exactly what I did.

I started nursing school in Spetember 2005 and am about to start my 3rd and
final year! I do 8hr clinical days just like the others, no special favours
or treatment. I do everything my classmates do and they even come to me for
help! I won an award last semester for clinical work and for being a
helpfull, compassionate classmate. It was an award that means a lot to me as
it was chosen by my clinical group mates. We were all asked to nominate
someone and they all chose me, it menat so much because I still sometimes
feel as if i have to prove myself over and over again.

Nursing is NOT easy when you are healthy, the hours are bad and long, you
often work hard and no one tells you thank you, but when they do it feels
great! Now try nursing when you have a disability, take Neurontin, Baclofen,
Zanaflex which all make your BP drop, have to self-cath and have a slow
bowel so must wake up 45min earlier that you should have to, and have to
take BP meds to increase your BP to be able to function while on your feet!
(Yeah, I take 2 types and so far mediocre results).

In my spare time, I blog about my life, moderate the TMA site and a student
nurse site.. and sleep...

Anyhow, I wrote a book! Sorry about the long read!

It could be a lot worse!!

The doctor and nurse shortage is worse in Quebec as they are the LOWEST paid
in all of Canada. They are recruited to work in Ontario (nurses are highest
paid there) and the USA especially. And yes, most MDs do not want to be GPs
as they are the lowest paid specialty. I have 4-5 friends who graduated MeD
School in the last 3 years, one of them became a GP and she did her
residency in Ontario and stayed there to practice.. The others all went into
specialties that will bring in more $$.
I am in nursing school and plan on stayiing in Qc, ONLY because I have TM
and am getting very good care here and am not sure i would be well accepted
in hospitals that do not know me. Having been in clinical rotation in 4
hospitals here in Montreal, I know that it can be tough to be accepted when
you have a disability, but that I have proven myself capable and have gotten
job offers already. But yes, in a perfect system, there would be no waiting
times, no shortages and much better wages and working conditions.

Hi Regina,

I'm not sure either of which is the better system. I understand that if
you can afford the insurance in the USA that you are well taken care of.
However I also understand that it can be quite expensive for the premiums.

You are right that you do wait for a long time some surgeries. A lot of
them actually. Some people who need hip or knee surgery wait for up to a
year and maybe more in some cases. That is crazy.

Yes, there are NOT enough doctors here in Canada. Not sure exactly why. I
have read that some of the doctors who are new are going into specialized
medicines or even research as they do not want to be GP's because of the
hours etc. I have gone to the same GP now for 40 yrs and he is only a
couple years older than me. Says he will be around for another 10 yrs.
Not sure about that though. He has moved 3 times in those years within the
mostly downtown area of Calgary. However, with Calgary growing so doggone
fast these days rental prices etc are so high downtown that he has moved
outside the downtown core. He said that the overhead was getting to be so
high that he moved. It is actually the same timewise for me to get to him
but actually easier as it is a quieter area and I don't have to pay for
parking and there is more parking so that makes me quite happy. I only go
to see him once a year even with TM. I see the physiatrist once every six
months since TM and that is okay too. You say that housing etc is high
where you are for the young doctors and I think that combined with setting
up an office of their own is high too.

I do not know what on earth the answer is. I just wish there were more
young people getting into the medical field. We are short of nursing
staff here too as well as many of the nursing homes are desparate for help.
It doesn't seem to be just in Calgary either as most of my family live in
Ontario and they are having the same problems with nursing, doctors too.

  Frank & Heather,
I am trying to figure out whether you are better off in Canada or us in
the US. The more I try to educate myself, the more confused I become.
You both seem satisfied with your health care system. That's good. But
we hear about many in Canada who have to wait a long time for surgery.
That's bad. And one of you (don't remember who) said that there aren't
enough doctors in Canada. How come? Is it because of that $150,000 cap
Frank talks about?
Incidentally, I'm told (where I live) that young doctors are having a
hard time getting started because homes are horribly expensive. Taxes and
insurance for doctors also very high, and so on...
All this talk about reforming health care we hear from our presidential
candidates is very interesting. I don't think we need to worry about
socialized medicine. There is too much money in the status quo.

  Cynical as always.

Pam,
When u get paralyzed, how do you get back to walking?? I cud
not walk at all if I tried. I am totally paralyzed from T12
down. Last weekend it was sorta funny in a way. I had been
feeling better, had a break in my hard pain the day before.
On Sat. nite my husband said "Let's watch a movie

downstairs"? Well, it is only a full step and downstairs is
carpeted. It is like a sunroom in a way but we always have
used it like a den. It does have some wall between the
windows. Anyway, he uses these 2 ramp things that he use to
drive the automatic mower upon to work on it and get into the
storage bldg. Anyways, we've done it before w/ my loner w/c,
but not w/ this new one. He was taking me down very slowly
and when we got to the bottom I flipped out and landed face
down. But one leg had come in the front and one in the back.
So, my head actually hit my leg mostly. Anyways, my husband

picked me up (200 lbs. or a little, little less I am) and put
me in the recliner. We still don't know what happened. I
think my foot pedals are very low on this one so they don't
wack the walls and they hit fast and out I went. It is funny
to think about it now. I was a little shaken up at the time.
Sorry for the novel, Natalie M.

I KNOW THEY DO A SURGERY SIMILAR BUT ON YOUR COLON A
COLONOSCOPY. HER WHOLE IS TINY AND SHE JUST WEARS A
BIGGER BANDAID ON IT. SHE TRAINED HER BODY TO DO THAT.
I ALSO KNOW A GIRL WHO HAS NO BLADDER. SHE URINATES
WHEN SNE HAS A BOWEL MOVEMENT. THERE IS SO MUCH
TECHNOLOGY NOW I THINK WE WILL BE OK.
KEEP UP THAT GREAT ATTITUDE, I KNOW YOU WILL DO FINE
WITH YOUR SURGERY.
  GOD BLESS YOU TIAD PAM
