Re: [TMIC] Fwd: Questions????

2006-03-18 Thread Heather & Pieter
First two weeks (of the two months I was there) one of the nurses told me
that the severe leg spasms I had during the night that woke me up was a way
that my body was telling me that I needed to void. He was right. Every
time I was wakened with the spasms I called for them to come and cath me and
it worked. Otherwise I would have wet the bed more often than I did. Now 2
1/2 yrs later I find that spasms still wake me up and yep, go to the
bathroom and all is well til the next time.

When I get muscle spasms (generally at night), I usually take an extra
calcium pill and it works.

sally,

I used to get up and take a medication for spasms, but then one night
aafter a couple of pints at a party, i woke up to go to the bath to void,
i noticed that i had no spasms during the rrest of the night.

so then, i tried just getting up- feet on cold floor, standing, walking 20
feet to the bath, voiding, no meds- and returning to bed, and no more
spasms for the rest of the night.

my next step was to forgo the voiding, and still no spasms.

conclusion: just getting up, walking around cures my spasms.

Physiotherapy on a regular schedule helps me too

When I get muscle spasms (generally at night), I usually take an extra
calcium pill and it works.  I'm assuming it's b/c I need it, b/c
it seems to stop the spasms.  (I say that b/c vitamin supplements are not
magic medicine; they generally only work if the problem is caused
by a shortage of that particular vita).

Kelli,
I don't want to give everybody on the TM list a mental picture of me
cathing, but here goes.
I'm 6 years into TM and I still have trouble cathing on the toilet.
Here's my secret:  I am just tall enough that I can slide onto and
sit on the bathroom vanity.  I use a standing mirror to aim the catheter
and just let it empty in the sink.  Only my hubby knew I did this
until I told my urologist.  He laughed and said that about 75% of
his female cathing patients do that.
In the first year, which I spent mostly in bed, I used a male (longer)
catheter and aimed it into a pail.  I did it half-sitting with a mirror.
As for gaining strength and mobility.so much depends on how long
TM has been there.  I came a long way after the first year and find
there are things I do now that I couldn't do a year ago.
Good luck,
Diane in Canada

hi kelli!! a couple of weeks ago,we had a good discussion with reguard to the problems your having with the leg spasms,as far as the female part i cant offer much advice, but the average output of the bladder is approx 400ccs,but if your having problems emptying it can get up to 700 or 800.i once put out over 1000 believe it or not. the leg deal is known as muscular chlones, their like mini spasms and indicate chord dammage.i found their more of an annoyance than anything, you have to find what works for you as far as stopping them.somtimes i apply downward pressure on my leg,and that works.put your hands under the knee and lift up on the leg.or stretching works really well.also problems like a full bladder or bowel or uti's will set them off also.just out of curiosity when did you get tm and what meds are you on for the spastisity.webmd has alot of info there,i would check it out.
