RE: [TMIC] Gabapentin
Sorry - I have a new email and they seem to come out of order. I missed this message which must have come before the last one. Generally, 1000 mg/day (under 50) to 1200 mg/day (over 50) is the recommended amount of calcium for adults. Of course, if you're consuming dairy products, almonds, broccoli, and other calcium foods, you're getting calcium there, and that's the best source - assuming it adds up to be enough. But with the steroids that many of us have been given, we need extra to keep our bone density up. I argued with my doctor about taking supplements when he first told me to, b/c I've always had high levels due to my diet. But I did a bone density test and was shocked at the difference in my bone density from before TM and after the TM!) Actually, another good source is weight bearing exercise - that helps bone density, too - among other things. Patti's right about water soluble vitas being peed out! But besides being a waste, an extreme amount of one vita can cause a 'deficiency' or and an imbalance, in another. I.e.: taking extra magnesium as well as extra calcium is more likely to keep the two in balance. So moderation is a good rule. But if I'm going to take a risk, I'd rather risk extra vitamin supplements than extra drugs. On the other hand, everyone's body is different, so 'whatever works!' is my motto. Which is why I like the TMIC - because hearing everyone's experiences helps me to see what the choices - and possible risks - are. I never heard that you get into trouble with too much calcium. I take over 1200 mg a day, but I don't take them all at once. I take one at lunch and one at dinner, plus my multi which has calcium in the a.m. I also take one magnesium tablet in the a.m. It helps to absorb the calcium, but you don't take it at the same time as your calcium. Re: [TMIC] Gabapentin
That¹s quite a dramatic wash-out!! Just a few hours and it is gone from your system. At least the Lyrica (pregabolin) lasts until I rise in the morning. I now take 900mg/day of that. Re: [TMIC] Gabapentin
John, I'm not sure what your spasms are like - maybe yours are much worse than mine, but I've found that if I take sufficient calcium supplements, I don't have them. (What I refer to as 'spasms', for me, is when nerves in my legs actually cause my legs to jerk around when I'm still. It makes it hard to go to sleep.) I take maybe 800 mg to 1200 mg/day, depending on how much calcium foods I've eaten. If my legs start to spasm, I know I didn't take enough and get up and take some. (Calcium is more effective if taken in smaller doses - i.e. 400mg - throughout the day, rather than all at once.) My calcium levels were good before I was given the 5000 mg methyl-prednisone to zap the myelitis, but that zapped the calcium, too. So this is likely to be true for all of us who were given steroids to treat the TM. It might be worth it to give it a try. RE: [TMIC] Gabapentin
Kevin I was put on gabapentin two weeks ago. My doctor prescribed 300mg once a day. I take it at night. The only affect I have noticed is that it makes me sleep good at night. But I noticed that if I take it later at night, I am a little groggy in the a.m., so I take it earlier in the evening. My doctor did say that the dosage may have to be increased. He prescribed it for the burning/freezing pain in my feet, and I have not noticed any improvement in reducing it. I know some in here take much higher dosages, some even over 2,000 mg a day. I go back to the doctor after he holidays and he may prescribed a higher dosage, but many in here have stopped taking it because it did not do any good. Yes, I open the capsule - sometimes it takes awhile but I finally get it. I've found that if I twist the capsule it is easier BUT I have to have the capsule over whatever I'm putting it in. I have to cut or open all of my meds because I have an ileostomy ( I had to have all my colon removed due to ulcerated colitist over 35 years ago) and due to that pills and capsules don't desolve but go through me within an hour or so therefore doing nothing. I did read in the phamplet that openin and mixing with soft foods was acceptable but I also remember my mother doing that for my step-father after his stroke because he couldn't swallow anything except soft foods. I used to have really strange dreams when I was on Gabapentin. I was on it for 2 years then my neur switched me to Lyrica for which there is no generic. Two years later, my neuro has now switched me to Topomax to try to help control the weight gain from the Gabapentin and Lyrica. Good Luck. [TMIC] Re: (TMIC) Gabapentin versus Lyrica
Out here in cold cold Calgary, with lots of snow too. Roads are like ice rinks. Current temp at 4 pm is minus 11F (minus 24C) with wind chil of minus 27F (minus 33C) I finally tried the Lyrica this month. I have been on 2400 mg of Gabapentin for 5 years now. Started out at 3200mg but decreased a few years ago. My neuro said that to be the equivalent of the 2400mg of Gabapentin I would need to take 600mg of Lyrica per day. So on Dec. 8 I started 300mg in the morning and 12 hours later I took another 300mg. The Lyrica made a huge difference to me in pain control. However, on Dec. 16 I started to notice my ankles swelling and retaining fluid. That has happened usually in the summer when it is hot or if I overdo things. The ankles usually went back to normal after a good nights rest and I would be fine again. On Dec. 17 and Dec. 18 my feet, ankles, legs below the knees were retaining lots of fluid and started to swell more as the day went on. I called the neuro yesterday (Dec. 18) for advice. I know one of the side effects of Lyrica is swelling in the legs. Since there is a lot of heart problems in my family this really frightened me. The neuro called me this afternoon and we talked about it. He has put me back on the 2400mg of Gabapentin. He said it is unfortunate that it didn't work for me since it controlled the pain so well. I asked him if I took less would it still make my legs swell. I don't remember his words but he indicated that no matter what dosage I took it would do the same. So I'm off the Lyrica and back on the Gabapentin tomorrow. Glad the pharmacy suggested only taking one months prescription of the Lyrica (it is more expensive than the Gaba). Has anyone else taken Lyrica and then had to go back to the Gabapentin because of adverse effects? I'm sure there are lots of us who have and it is just our own body chemistry. Just wondering how many have been adversely affected. Heather in cold Calgary
