I've been running Squeezebox Server WHS plug-in since it was made,
almost a year ago. It works perfectly well.
Just be sure to install the plug-in version, not the standard Windows
version (although the latter works well also).

So would you recommend formatting a new drive to HFS+ if I am going to
be running all Macs, plus the Touch? Skip FAT32 altogether?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezbox server software and headless Windows Home Server

2009-11-13 Thread gcurrie

Windows Home Server works quite well as an SBS host. Since it's meant to
be on 24/7 (or close to it) you never need to boot up computers in order
to listen to your music.

I'd advise keeping your music library on there as well, it simplifies
things greatly (as well as being duplicated if you choose for safety).

Well done Andy. Thanks for all the straight talking, and for the
willingness to talk at all. I love the flexibility and ease of use in
listening to my music I've got by having Squeezebox/es. The Duet did
take a while to get working well, but 7.4.2 for Windows certainly has
made using it a pleasurable experience.

Sigh, HFS is out, I just disabled it a few minutes ago. OSX is my
primary development system so there's no hatred for Mac here (although
HFS is a somewhat boneheaded filesystem, case-insensitive, and does
stupid things with Unicode). As I said before, there is no good Linux
driver.

In other news, as of r8091 NTFS should now auto-mount properly. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] NTFS Support Needed for Touch

2009-11-13 Thread MelonMonkey

I don't think it's relevant whether or not HFS+ is a valuable addition
to the Linux community as a whole. It's obvious that it isn't. Linux
is a marginal player at best. It's also not very relevant if a Logitech
engineer thinks it makes marketing sense to have that support in the
product they're working on.

What's relevant is whether or not HFS+ would make a valuable addition
for Logitech who is trying to sell a commercial product to as many
people as possible. Does it make financial sense to contract out to get
it done? I can probably make a business case for it if I were being
paid for my time.

Whether or not a drive comes "pre-formatted" isn't as relevant as what
format do customers normally format external drives themselves, whether
manually or when prompted by the system. NTFS pre-formatted volumes are
going to be reformatted HFS+ when used in a Mac.

If you don't value Mac customers, that's fine, but not likely something
that should be bragged about in the forums. Logitech as a corporate
entity clearly doesn't share that same view as numerous business units
have made it a priority to support Mac OS. That includes the streaming
audio unit since SBS runs perfectly well in Mac OS.

If smaller companies like SageTV can add HFS+ support to their
streaming devices, I'm sure Logitech could make it work. I did mention
I could refer an expert for a contract.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just use a normal CD player with analog

For the life of me I can't see the logic in complicating this matter
with a USB attached CD drive.

It sends out in whatever format it gets, so 16/44.1 for redbook. No

Re: Play audio CDs via USB on the Touch...

2009-11-13 Thread bpa

I have a plugin CDplayer which plays audio cd's on PC's through SBS. To
make it work on Touch would require porting the audio cd playing
application icedax/cdda2wav. I have plugged a USB cd drive into Touch
and there is some recognition of it as a USB drive although I am not
sure if there are more CD drivers needed for the kernel.

After that there is the question of performance - is there enough CPU
to handle SBS, Touch display and also rip audio from CD.

It is not possible with the shipped Logitech.

Are you referring to audio cd (i.e. red book 16bit/44.1kHz) or a CD-rom
(iso 9660) which have audio files (e.g. mp3, wma).

Play audio CDs via USB on the Touch...

2009-11-13 Thread Hamnberj

Hi!

Is it possible to attach a USB-CD/DVD player to the Touch and play
audio CD´s?

We got a couple of hundred of cd´s not ripped yet and my wife wants to
listen to them "the usual way" until they alll are ripped!

The idea is to use an old external USB2.0-CD/DVD drive attached to the
USB port of the Touch.
Do the squeezebox read the filesystem (ISO 9660?)and play the audio?

2009-11-13 Thread miab

I think John Swenson has direct experience with this (if your
listening:~)

I'm really only interested in sending 16/44.1 into SPDIF of my DAC. I
want the best possible(lowest jitter) signal into the Dac and don't mind
going through a steep learning curve getting there. I'm now storing all
music remotely on a server running Windows Home Server. I recently
bought a FIT-PC and before going through set-up for a NetJack based
set-up, I was wondering if the new Squeezebox Touch could end up being
superior? If I used the Fit-PC I would still have to get the USB out to
a SPDIF. I was thinking of a couple of the new Async converter units
like the Musiland 01usd but even then how would my Dac communicate in an
Async fashion with it? I mean the Musiland (or others like it) might
control the signal from the computer but on the other side what happens
on the dac end if your only using them as USB/SPDIF converters and not
Dac's?
