The quote "nomen est omen" is only one of two options on how to operate
the Touch. Romte controlling it with an iPod/iPhone or Controller is the
second and most preferred one.

What version of SBS were you running before you got the message
(Settings > Information)? As others have said, if you're already
running 7.6 beta, then you'll get a message when a new nightly comes
out. Meanwhile, 7.6.0 is still most definitely beta. See here:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/ and here:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.6.

Look for a 7.6.0 release at the first link, and read the top line of
the page on that second link.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Recommended decoder settings for best sound quality

The defaults are pretty optimal. There's not much to do when decoding
FLAC. It either works or it doesn't, just like opening a ZIP file.

Some people claim huge differences with the various volume controls,
but the defaults are sane.

If its actually on the Touch asking, it is a Firmware Update, not an
SBS Update. Firmware updates are r and SBS production versions are
7.5.X and the next big one will most likely be 7.6.0. So if a player
asks for an update/download, it is a Firmware update. If SBS on your
server says it has a newer server version available, it will probably
be a production SBS 7.5.X or 7.6.0 when it becomes available.

But you are right in that if the player has told you it has a Firmware
upgrade available and you downloaded it, you will most likely see an
improvement in your player. So its a good thing, but not production SBS
7.6.0.

I'm using a WD 640 GB Passport, which goes to sleep after 10 minutes of
inactivity. Its indicator light blinks every 2-3 seconds. I left the
Touch in standby mode for 2 days.

I woke the Touch, and the drive woke right up, and I was able to select
and play music right away. I don't know if it did a quick rescan. I'm
just getting started and have a small number of tracks loaded. Never
did see the "circle" indicating server starting or connecting.
Other posts suggest some drives will drop the USB link, which may be
part of the problem scenarios. I have not seen this in my setup.
Works just like you would expect or want.
BTW the Passport sleep time can be set on a pc with the WD Essential
software.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Recommended decoder settings for best sound quality

Could someone please advise the recommended advanced>format decoder
settings for best sound quality, particularly for streaming FLAC, both

An explanation of the decoder settings (eg. native, faad/flac etc, why
flac is relevant to AAC) would also be helpful.

Would you really want a cable straight across the middle of the room? I
think that's ugly and inconvenient, so I would run it around the room
along the baseboard. And although my room isn't overly big and I am
sitting quite close to the rack, in that case I would easily get a
cable length of 5 or 6 meters.

You must have been running the 7.6 beta version of Squeezebox Server on
a computer on your network. Beta versions of the server will download
beta versions of the firmware for SqueezePlay based players (Radio,
Touch and the Controller).

It gets even more confusing with the Touch because its firmware
contains a server (aka "TinySC"). We've been told that in the 7.6
branch of the software that this internal server is based on the 7.6
beta version of the "big" Squeezebox Server.

> Beta or not, good to finally be able to use the Touch as I want without

That's very good to here. I'm also running that firmware without any
problems, although I don't use the internal server.

I think you are confusing SBS Software updates with Player Firmware updates.

SBS v 7.6 is still beta. I assume you have installed a 7.6 nightly, and
therefore you will see "A new software update is available ..." messages on the
player to update the firmware.

It would be more appropriate, I think, for this message to say "New player
firmware is available ...".

I think the SBS Web UI Settings > Software Update screen doesn't help by having
a single option in SBS for automatic SOFTWARE downloads. This includes the SBS
software, and player FIRMWARE for Squeezeplay players.

Clearly stating the difference between Server software and Player firmware
might make this less confusing?

[SlimDevices: Touch] Art work finally fixed for me.

2010-05-13 Thread Flashgordon400

After much messing around with JPG size, removing everthing except
letters from the title and a few other things I finally have all 93
pictures on 93 albums. Just put it in the same folder as the music
files and call it cover.jpg in my case, as all mine are jpg files. It
seems anything before the word "cover" messes it up. If you are working
with another system for your music as well, just copy and paste it into
the music folder and remane it "cover" to do the log for Squeezebox.
Thats 36GB, just another 86GB to look at on my FreeAgent, LOL.
Have to say, I think the Touch is fantastic. After about 25 hours use
now it really sounds miles better than I had expected.

Well, it would help if you said what interface you were using for the
part you say is working correctly. Is that the web ui?

Anyway, to change the view on the Touch you need to change the settings
on the Touch. As described earlier: Settings > Advanced > Album sort
order. The same applies for all the SqueezeOS devices, including the
Radio and the SB Controller.

For that matter, even on the web ui, if you use a different browser or
a different computer I am pretty sure that you need to change the
setting each time. I think on the web ui the setting is maintained by a
browser cookie, not by SBS.

Btw, when you change the displayed sort order there is no need to
rescan.

properly.
Nice.

But wierdly enough on the Touch...on Browse Album through the home

I did a factory reset all the usual stuff...still came back the same.

I had thought the Touch like the Sb3 took it's settings directly from

why are they different?

I'm using 7.5 and there's nothing plugged in the USB.

I've decided, for the time being, to just live with the incredible
slowness of it all. Once it pulls up an album and starts playing, I
don't have any problems. And I've decided to live with the fact that
when I hit song B on album B, it'll play song c, thereby requiring me
to pull up the playlist and select song A.

I'm hoping that playlists work well. Otherwise, the thing is going to
be pretty worthless for parties.

Another thing is that I've been incredibly disappointed with logitech's
customer support. The last 4 people I have spoken with have very, very
limited knowledge about their own product. And Tier 2 support is
nonexistent.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Rescan HD after taking Touch out of standby!!!

2010-05-13 Thread Mnyb

Has somebody with this problem actually filed a bug report on it ?
Posting on the forum disappears fast into oblivion.

If the devs does not know they won't fix it.

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/

Instructuions and considerations from logitech

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74846

Basically they want a detailed enough report so they can reproduce the
problem at their end.
Exact version of everything involved etc just common sense .

IF your read around in the wiki and in different posts, you realize
that they have a pile of different harddrives to try with, but not all
of them.

And all drives won't work.

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Touch_as_a_Home_Music_Server

Far to many USB drives breaks the spec and are not USB certified, In
reality they draw to much power trough the USB.
Warning sign if your drive came with an extra USB cable that ends in an
DC power plug.

If it has an external power supply you should use it.

A rather incomplete compatibility chart fill it in if you got something
that works.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Pants - Or Am I Missing Something?

2010-05-13 Thread rbz5416

Just set up a Touch.

I can live with the 100 song playlist limit in TinySC but there appears
to be no easy way to import playlists from SBS. So it looks like they
need to be re-created from scratch. Creating them in the first place
was a 24 carat PITA through the web interface, it's going to be even
worse via the touch screen or IR remote. I've tried editing them to
replace the path & replace \ with / but when playing them the current
playplist reports "nothing".

It appears that the Touch won't play playlists from SBS either. Gives
the same result of saying it's going to play but the current playlist
says "nothing".

Can't selectively scan a USB drive. Just unplugged the USB backup from
my SBS server which has a separate folder of MP3s for portable use. SBS
is configured to scan just the flac folder but TinySC seems to want to
scan the whole disk leading to duplication.

Hi-res is no different than any other format. It can be well done and
sound good, giving value over 16/44; or it can be badly executed and be
a rip off.

However, I do agree that if the "rip-off" tracks are too prevalent, the
format will die.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Physical setup of Touch

2010-05-13 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

having looked at the system-pics thread as well as other places, my
impression is that most who use the Touch place it alongside the
amplifier, cdplayer, DAC, etc. i.e. on the rack.

I also understand that the screen is not really readable from distances
above approx. 2.5meters/8feet - of course, even with really long arms,
thats far too much for using the Touch interface :S

So I was wondering why folks do not simply place the Touch somewhere
closer to their seating arrangements? I think I would do that.

The only thing I can think of against, is having to run audio-cables to
the rack. 2.5meters is perhaps a bit long for analouge RCA-lines. On the
other hand, many are using external DAC's, and in this case a coax-run
of 2.5meters is actually prefferabe (over shorter cable-runs).

What have I missed, or could/should additionally consider.

TIA

down.

Is there a way of doing this? We booth have pc and mac at home so I can
use any of theese machines to make this happen, HOW DO I DO THIS? What
program shall I use to make it still work while connected to the Touch
and not only to our laptops. I dont want a computer on while playing

Yes - install SBS 7.6 on an external server and the SBS inside the
Touch will update when it connects to the external server.
