[SlimDevices: Touch] nike air jordan 7

2010-06-22 Thread ailidas

The Air Jordan Shoes 7-Olympics-White-Midnight Navy-Red
www.nikeoutletstore.org are simply put.A WORK OF ART! These were
released in the summer of 1992, and were dubbed the "Olympics" as
Jordan wore them while playing for team USA during the Olympic games,
which came to be known as the original Dream Team. A white upper with
metallic silver highlights, as well as red, blue, and gold accents.
They feature small perforations throughout the upper which act as a
breathing mechanism for the foot. Also, the back heel features the
diamond shaped emblem we have come to familiarize with the Air Jordan 7
(VII) but instead of the usual "23" on it, it features the number "9",
which was Michael's Olympic jersey number. These are truly adored by
Jordan fanatics to this day, who would kill to have these in their
collection.

The Air Jordan Shoes 7 www.nikeoutletstore.org -Black-Chambray-Light
Graphite were released on February 20, 2006.They were designed by
Jordan brand mastermind Tinker Hatfield, and was influenced by Western
African tribal patterns, which were on a poster he purchased in
Portland. His intention for the shoe was to stay young and interesting,
while remaining sophisticated. They feature a black suede upper with
with chambray and grey accents, which can be seen on the Jumpman logo,
midsole, and tongue of the shoe. The shoe's design is quite
interesting, as it features an inner sock or inner shoe, similar to the
Nike Air Huarache technology, which is intended to really conform to
your foot.

The Air Jordan Shoes www.nikeoutletstore.org 7-Black-Dark
Charcoal-True Red were released on December 14, 2002.The are almost
exact copies of the originas. A brighter purple color scheme than the
old skool version. The shoe is completely black, which may seem bland,
but the purple and red accents definitely draw attention to the shoe,
contrasting from the black base. The lines on the shoe, although hard
to see due to the all black colorway were influenced by Western African
tribal patterns, which were a poster that Tinker Hatfield purchased in
Portland, Oregon. Although simple, they are one of the more sought
after colorways in the Air Jordan 7 (VII) line- up.

You could even go with some kind wifi AP where you conect the wire from
the Touch .

Point in case seems to not burden The Touch with wifi chores it has
small cpu not much memory etc, turning of the wifi and not loading the
modules saves the scarse resources.

Otherwise there is no sound-quality difference whatsoever between any
kind of network topology as long as the data arrives faster than you
can play it, if not it rebuffers and stutter.
You can download a file from internet and it sound ok ;) this could be
over 100 yo old phone-lines or whatnot.

Having said that I pulled wires to conect my Touch just because some
buffering could occur with 24/96 files, but 24/96 material is a corner
case not everybody has this demand on their system.

The concept of an authoritative TinySC instance didn't seem to be on
anybody's radar. Maybe that's because in that timeframe (last Sep.)
most beta users were relying on beta MySB or FatSBS. Still, I don't
think it should be that hard to deal with. The Fab4/Touch applet code
should include logic to use the date command with MySB if the current
music source is the local TinySC instance. Might take less than 5 lines
of code.

This wouldn't be as good as running ntpd locally (one of the best
things about ntpd being its maintenance of a 'drift' file so that it
keeps very good time so long as the local clock is reliably fast or
slow), but should be good enough to keep Touch and any Squeezeboxes
that use it as a music source in pretty good shape -- so long as the
user has a live Internet connection. To handle users without Internet
connections, I don't think there's any getting around something like
ntpd's drift file. Logitech could emulate that in Lua with the existing
SN/MySB date facility, they don't need to actually ship ntpd with the
Touch firmware.

Wow. Reading a bug report like that makes you realize that the
developers were really flying by the seat of their pants on many things
they had to deal with on the SqueezePlay based players. There were
about a half dozen different problems discussed and it looks like only
two or three were ultimately resolved. The very concept of having
local time on the player seems very foreign to everyone.

SqueezePlay has turned out to be an odd bird. Nobody appears to know
how to deal with the locally stored settings and how to reconcile them
with multiple SbS servers, TinSC and mysb.com. In its current form SP
is a strange mix of local settings and the old client/server model,
where little on the old players worked without a live connection to a
server. Unfortunately, the two approaches don't seem to mix very well.

I have tried it. I used one of the fanless massive zalman heatsinks. It
did work, but it was pretty close to the edge. As dust builds up,
airflow changes etc the system was getting unstable. Not a good place
to be. I eventually went with the zalman that has a large heatsink and
a slow very quiet fan. It works perfectly and is very quiet. I have to
be within 6" of the case to hear it. The suspended disk actually
makes more noise.

There IS a real time clock (RTC) in the processor chip, but they didn't
put a battery on the board to keep it alive. I'm sure they did this
because the hardware team that was designing the Touch was assuming it
was going to be a network player like all other squeezeboxen so would
always be connected to an external server from which it would get its
time.

Under linux there are two clocks, the system clock and the RTC, they
are separate clocks. In many systems the system clock just runs off the
main processor interrupt oscillator which is usually not a highly
accurate clock. In order to deal with this linux can apply an
adjustment from the system clock. It computes and updates this
adjustment by getting periodic updates from an external time server. If
setup properly this can give very accurate time, all the time. Currently
this system is not being used on the Touch.

What is being used is the standard Squeezebox time synchronization
system. In this system the player is assumed not to have any RTC so
must get its time from a SBS. The SBS gets its time from the time
system on the machine it is running on. It assumes that the machine it
runs on is already running one of these time synchronization schemes.

Obviously when the Touch is running its own server all this falls
apart. Right now I think the Touch goes out and connects to
mysqueezebox.com when it boots so IF you have an internet connection
you at least get an update at boot time. I THINK you also get an update
when you explicitely connect to mysqueezebox.com. So one solution is to
manually connect to mysqueezebox.com once a day or every other day etc.

If you don't have a connection to the internet and want to manually set
the time you can do this by loging in to the Touch with SSH and typing
the following command:

date -s "2010-06-22 19:04:23"

Of course change the date and time to match the current conditions.
Make sure you include the double quote marks (") and realize the hours
are in 24 hour format, the 19 in the above means 7pm.

The firmware in the Touch should probably be modified to have both an
easy way to manually enter the time and some form of periodic update
either from mysqueezebox.com or an internet time server. Getting some
form of this in place is not hard, getting it RIGHT so the system works
properly in all circumstances is not trivial. Its probably going to take
a lot of thought by several people to figure out how to properly set the
system up.

There are a lot of scenarios, external server, internet or no internet.
Local server, internet, no internet. Internet time server, mysqueezebox.
hatever is put in place has to work in all situations without weird
situations happening because something updated the time and now some
file is in the future and strange things happen.

This probably needs to have communication between users and developers
to get this hacked out correctly. I'm not sure what the best place to
do this is, a forum thread such as this, or a bug thread.

I think you have a bad display on your meter, more like 3.6 Watts, not
36. It is impossible for a Touch to EVER draw more then 20 watts even
with really lose tolerances and a short (rated at 15W as in 5V*3A). And
without using the USB port to power a poorly designed USB drive, no way
to even get close to 10 Watts.

Your Touch is probably drawing more like .72A at 5VDC and the meter is
reading 3.6 Watts.

Kill-A-Watts are fine for what they are, but they're not exactly
professional devices. Try it on a similarly low-watt device and see

I have to say I think you are doing something wrong, cause the PSU that
is shipped with the Touch would have melted into a small pool of plastic
if it tried to supply 36W continuously.

Something's wrong. My Kill-A-Watt measures 2 watts when Touch is idle (4
with a USB drive attached). The power supply is rated for 3A at 5V out,
or 15W max output, so 36W sounds very implausible.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Standalone with HDD Which File Format?

2010-06-22 Thread mdconnelly

My advice is to keep things simple. Managing a NAS has it's own
headaches and a collection of 800 CDs is probably only going to take
about 300+ gig in flac, so no real need for a NAS I wouldn't think.
But do be sure to by a spare drive to backup your the hard disk.

Depending upon your setup, you may find that running SqueezeCenter and
feeding the Touch via wired or wireless from your LAN might be just as
good as running TinySC. There are a few benefits from doing so such as
browser access to SqueezeCenter and some of the plugins, but it does
require you to keep you computer running SqueezeCenter up all the time.
Not such a bad thing.

A quick press of the reset button on the back should do the trick.
Amazingly, Logitech has built a complete Linux computer, with ethernet

it the ability to maintain the time between reboots. So when using

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Standalone with HDD Which File Format?

2010-06-22 Thread woodnut

Many thanks for all the really useful information an tips. Can't wait to
get the touch, I am pretty determined to get it to work for me.

One other factor which occurred to me is the hard drive format, will
this affect performance FAT32 or NTFS? The Toshiba I ordered is FAT32.
Should I leave it or reformat? I think there is a 4GB file limit per
file on FAT32.

I may be jumping the gun a bit here but would using the Touch with a
NAS be a much smoother and more stable option with a large library? The
reason I ask is that I have just read that the external Toshiba USB HDD
that I have just purchased
( http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145041 ) is actually a Western Digital
WD10EAVS Sata 1TB drive in a toshiba enclosure. Does that mean that I
could put this drive into a NAS enclosure at a later date for the fully
functional and presumably more stable SB software running from the NAS
rather than TinySC?

I don't know much about NAS drives and whether or not they are easy to
set up with the touch but I have seen a couple of NAS enclosures for
around £50 in the UK. (
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Arkara-Gigalan-Entry-SingleBay-Enclosure/dp/B00375MXN2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1277242080&sr=8-1
)

Would this Arkara Gigalan Entry Level SingleBay NAS Enclosure (or
something similar in price) run the SB software and take my Toshiba
Sata 1TB drive?

Many thanks!

Sorry the above question is a bit off my original topic.

My touch is reporting the correct time. But mine is attached to a local
server running SbS so different conditions than you. Seems odd that the
TinySC doesn't get its time correctly from mysb.com, if that is in fact

I can connect to mysqueezebox.com.
If this is a bug, it should affect all the touch user right ?
And if this is a bug, there is a way to ask Logitech to take care of it
?

I don't follow how wired connection implies you need the quietest HDD.
As several of us have suggested, put the server (with HDD) in a
different room, preferably one where's it's easy to connect it to the
router with cat5e or cat6 cable. Then figure out a way to wire the
Touch to the router, also preferably via ethernet, though homeplugs
should be okay, too. JohnS doesn't say anything is wrong with using a
router or switch, does he?

2010-06-22 Thread badboygolf16v

Thanks everyone for your advice.

It sounds like a wirelessly accessed NAS might not be such a good idea
then. I want to try a hard wired connection from SBS to Touch so I
think the getting the quietest HDD is the way to go.

And Inguz doubts mean Atom may not be good enough. I hadn't really
considered building a higher power server but I think this might a good
thing to do, with a 2.5" 1TB HDD acoustically treated it should be
near-enough silent?

Certainly cheaper and more configurable than a Mac Mini, and cheaper
than a new Tranquil PC. (The benefit of the Tranquil PC is silence, is
it a price worth paying..?)

The newly released quad core AMD 45W Athlon II X4 610e looks
interesting, the Intel i3-530 is 73W, which swings it in the AMD's
favour. Anyone know if the AMD could be passively cooled?

Ah! I wasn't aware of that and that could very well have been the
problem I was running in to since they were flacs that I downloaded
from the a couple online hi-res sites. I'll take a closer look when I
get home tonight.

I agree that flacs at -5 are a good compromise and going to -8 may very
well create more issues than benefits.

I am of the opinion that -5 FLAC Ripping is just a good all around
compromise. As in going to -6 through -8 really doesn't save that much
more space on a hard drive (not enough because large drives are cheap
and the CPU price that must be paid) but really adds to the load on the
CPU. At zero there is basically hardly any CPU load and one better have
lots of disk space. -5 is a good compromise between 0 and -8.

I am using Toshiba drives with the Touch without issue. Hopefully you
will have the same luck/results.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Standalone with HDD Which File Format?

2010-06-22 Thread JohnSwenson

The latest firmware that comes with 7.5.1 has some flac decoder
enhancements that should help to alleviate the problems some have found
with hi rez flac decoding.

BEFORE this upgrade 24/96 flacs with -8 compression played off an
attached USB drive had a fairly high probability of having problems.
Unfortunately several of the online music download services encode
their hi rez flac files with -8. There have been reports that the new
firmware allows these to play fine.

Flacs encoded at -5 have had far less problems and ones encoded at -0
almost never have a problem. Regular 44.1 flac files have also not had
any problems.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Changing My Server Setup & Getting the best from Touch

2010-06-22 Thread JohnSwenson

I still think that wired to the Touch is the best. But I don't think
that files on a NAS going to SBS on a different machine is a good idea
either.

Its best to have the files on the same machine as SBS and put that in a
different room from the listening room, and use a wired network to the
Touch. If you absolutely HAVE to have the Touch running wifi, I think
you will be better off with the link between SBS and Touch rather than
NAS and SBS. But everything wired is still by far the best.

I'm a little over the top but I built a server with a cheap asus board,
AMD multicore processor, zalman heatsink with a slow moving fan, SSD for
OS and 1TB HD for music files. This system is very quiet, and SCREAMS
performance wise. Web ui is lightning fast, rescans and everything else
are rediculously fast. It should be able to handle any DSP tasks you
want to run on the server with ease. This thing really didn't cost that
much. If I remember correctly it was about $600 for the whole thing.

I have 1300 albums in flac + album art on a 500g Lacie USB drive
attached to my Touch. The Lacie has it's own power. It just works.

The only time I've run into buffering issues is in playback of 24/96
hi-res files. Interestingly, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't
so I'm not sure what the issue is. I haven't tried yet to recompress
those flac files from -5 to a lower number to see if that would make a
difference.

Please be sure that you are able to switch to MySqueezebox.com. Normally
a player updates its clock from Squeezebox Server or MySqueezebox.com to
compensate for the relatively poor clock drift. Either your Touch is
unable to get time from MySB or there's a bug and it's too dumb to
realize that the built-in server is not a reliable time source. I
expect it's a bug, but please check your ability to switch to MySB to
be more certain.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Standalone with HDD Which File Format?

2010-06-22 Thread garym

FLAC compression is 0 to 8. 5 seems to be the default "average". All
levels of compression are LOSSLESS, it is just a function of how much
space is saved. And yes, the more compressed, the more work the decoder
does. This said, I've not seen any problems with the 5 level. And even
the 8 level is fine for non-hirez files based on most reports. This
said, I recommend the 5 level. It is a relatively small size file (for
FLAC) and easy to decode for most players.

I'm not sure I would give up the artwork. Just have EAC put the album
cover in the album directory (this would be a single jpg file). I
really doubt the use of artwork is going to be a problem for you. And
you will eventually regret not having the artwork associated with your
albums.

I've always ignored all the USB drive setup info myself as well. But
I'm sure you can find info on your drive when it arrives (either in the
instructions or online).

enjoy!

Flac is definitely what I shall use given the advice received here and
I shall rip with EAC using MP3tag to tag the files. I won't bother with
any artwork and shall try and keep everything neat and simple to give
the Touch the best chance of smooth operation.

Fingers crossed it will work as the external USB drive option is the
most attractive feature and the main reason for this purchase.

Best thing I ever did was run CAT-6 ethernet to every room in my new
(old 1918) house. But in a weekend place where I had WIFI problems, I
ended up wiring my SB player with MoCa (modem over cable TV wiring).
Works nicely. Some use internet over powerline adapters (cheaper I
think, but your home wiring needs to be up to snuff).

Pulling ethernet cable between rooms is less painful than one might
think.
At least compared to tracing intermittent wifi disturbances and flaky
wifi performance that can be a problem in an urban area with dozens of
other networks nearby. Or if you live in an old/large house .
Wifi takes some fiddling now and then shift channels to keep away from
neighbours optimizing antenna placements etc .

ethernet just works, pair it with static addressing of players and
servers and half the router and network could silently go south without
hiccups in the music.

One more component than you need. Forget the NAS for storage. If for
some reason you don't want to use the noisy USB drive/enclosure in the
same room as the server PC I'd suggest you buy a nice quite 5400RPM
drive and use it for music storage inside the server's case. Then use
the external USB drive for backups only.

It seems to me that Touch playback from USB is in the realms of Forrest
Gump's box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.
About all you can do is try it & see what happens. Maybe it will work
as you want & maybe it won't. Unfortunately nobody, apparently not even
Logitech, can provide details of a configuration that is guaranteed to
work as you want it to.

I tried one with both a mains powered Seagate Freeagent 750GB & a bus
powered Samsung S2. The results were identical. Painfully slow scans,
random hanging, disjointed playback of playlists & random selections.
I'm in the process of trying to return mine.
