Have you tried with a drive that spins down when not used? Or doesn't
that work with the Touch ?

And don't expect much savings. Touch, and its screen, are very power
efficient. With a USB hard drive attached, my Touch when "off" seems to
draw about 2/3 of a watt less with the screen dark than with the black
digital clock showing (~4.15w vs ~4.85w). Power use is less if I
"eject" and unplug the USB drive (about 2.75w when off with the screen
dark).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] operating question about power-off

2010-07-15 Thread JohnSwenson

First off, what are you expecting the power button to do? All it does is
stop whatever is playing and invokes the "off" screensaver, which by
default is the clock. It does not put the hardware into a "sleep" state
that uses less power or any such thing.

Just stopping the current playing song will cause the Touch to use less
power.

There has been a bug on this for quite a while with quite a bit of
information. The latest info seems to be that under some circumstances
when running the local server the internal clock does not get set. When
the clock screensaver tries to start it notices that the clock is not
set and won't bring up the clock display.

If your reason for pushing the off button is to get into a low power
mode your best bet is to set the off screensaver to "screen off", this
will turn off the screen back light and stop anything playing. This
will be the lowest power state the Touch can be in.

If the reason for pushing the off button is to see the clock, you have
to make sure the clock gets set. It gets unset when it reboots (powers
up). If you have an internet connection it will try and connect to
mysqueezebox.com from which it can set its clock. If you don't normally
have an internet connection but can temporarily connect it you can do so
and explicitly connect to mysqueezebox.com and the clock will get set.

If you have no way to connect the Touch to the internet you will have
to manually set the date and time. Unfortunately this is not easy. You
have to use SSH to login to the Touch and use the linux date command to
set the clock. You only have to do this once as long as the Touch
doesn't reboot.

Try setting the off screensaver to something other than a clock and see
if it will come up when the power button is pressed. If it still does
not come up there is something else going on and the developers will
really want to know about it.

Yes, running SBS on a sheevaplug can easily handle flac decoding.

That is good. I think the exception is when the receiver for the Duet is
connected to the internet via cable (no wifi router used) - not sure
what encryption the controller use for communicating with the receiver
in such setup.

Yes. Any/all devices connected via WiFi are using whatever encryption
you have set.
All SB players & controllers are communicating through your router, not
directly to each other.

Thanks, you are being very helpful. Actually I don't know if all my
devices in my network are WPS-compatible... my router is (totally
forgot all about that button because my other hardwired router, same
brand, has the same configuration menu).

About the security issue - I was thinking about how easy it is to
connect to the controller or receiver. Is all communication between
controller and receiver (and Radio etc.) encrypted via WPA2 (or
whatever you use). The PSK is stored in the units so I just want to be
sure if it is secure there? Probably a stupid question because I am
sure Logitech thought about that when they made these products...

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Easy way to change network key??

If you have a WPS-aware router, it should be sufficient to press the
"Connect" Button on your router and select Configure-by-WPS on the
Touch/Radio/Controller.

In this case, the router will send the WLAN parameters including the
PSK (encrypted) to your SqueezeBox.

Altec;561897 Wrote:
> What about the security issue? Will Squeezebox products affect that?

What kind of security issue do you mean?

As long as WPA is properly implemented in the SqueezeBoxes, it should
be safe.

Of course, if a bad guy gets (physical) access to you SqueezeBox, he
can read the PSK from the device.

Thanks. You are probably right flattermann, WPA2 is much more secure
than WEP so it shouldn't be necessary to changed it often (unless you
think it could have been leaked somehow).

Thanks peterw, I was looking for an easy way to change it through the

using too much time) otherwise I will just reenter the key - just real
boring to do. If only I could transfer the key via a USB-memory stick -
that would be easy.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Where to get info on external hard disk showing usb compliant power consumption

2010-07-15 Thread streumix

Hi,

we all know about the USB issues of the SB Touch regarding external
hard disks and their power consumption during spin-up. There are a
bunch of threads
listing working and non-working devices, but I'm interested in the real
startup (peak) current consumption of devices to find models compliant
to USB spec (< 500mA). They will have to work for sure, right ?

Up to now, I've found 2 websites which have started to provide such
info in their reviews:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/hdd-power-cons.html
http://www.storagereview.com/

Does anyone know of further sites ?
Toby

PS: Do you know that state-of-the-art 128GB SSD disks violate the USB
spec, too ? Not at startup, but during seq. write !

For the radio/controller, you can login via SSH and change the file
/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf accordingly.

Afterwards, change the WPA PSK on the router and restart the
radio/controller to activate the new settings.

Thanks to both of you and sorry for my late reply. That's a shame - it
is recommended to change the network key from time to time, so it
should be possible to do without knowing linux (not sure it would work

Logitech - you should change it if possible!

What about security? I work from my home and I am concerned about

the network key protected in the Squeezebox units and is it now easier
for someone to hack into my wifi network?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SB Touch + NAS advantages?

2010-07-15 Thread woodnut

Hello and many thanks for your replies.

I am using the SB Touch in standalone mode attached to a USB 1TB
Toshiba external HDD. I go out the coaxial digital output to my DAC a
Audio Synthesis Dax Decade. I believe that my system is revealing
enough to show relatively small improvements in the SB Touch
perfromance.

The main reasons I mentioned the Sheeva plug that make it an attractive
device to me are.
- Looks to be reasonably priced
- Small and unobtrusive
- Quiet
- There appears to be alot of helpful info on setting it up with SBS

I would want to use my current HDD with the sheevaplug and just use my
laptop to rip additional music as and when I buy it. I don't miss the
use of the plugins and would only be interested in the Sheevaplug if it
improves the sonic performance of the Touch by taking the processing
away from the touch and performing it all on the sheevaplug. Perhaps as
mentioned, the sonic benefits of an external server are not clear cut
though and it may be a relatively pointless expense.

I am still a little unclear as to whether it is possible to do the flac
decoding on a sheevaplug, is this possible?

Many thanks.

[SlimDevices: Touch] operating question about power-off

2010-07-15 Thread seaco

Hello,
I have a question of "Display remains on after pressing power
button".
Most of time, I press "power" button, the screen gets into Digital
clock.
If I connect and disconnect my usb HD several times, and squeezebox
server library(USB) will also update, then I press "Power" button, the
screen still on.
I have updated my touch into ver7.5.1 and everytime I found this
situation I will restore factory setting. After resting, screen display
digital clock is quite normal, but after several times of USB HD lib
connection, the power button won't make screen in digital clock
screensaver.

My Touch will never sleep, I have to unplug power line.
What should I do, I seldom see other fans with this case.
1.Should I double check screensaver setting ?
2.reset button in the back helps me?
3.I am tired of restore factory setting, cause everytime I reset, I
have to update again and modify asia fonts to see my music tag.

Please help me.
