I'm basically looking for a way to have the RSS News Ticker as portion
of the custom clock screen. Essentially an update of the RSS New
Ticker in a more "multi-media" format for the Radio and Touch. It
would be great to have the time and date along with the news headline
and detail and possibly a small story image, if the feed provides it.

You're almost there. I hope you find a reason to add it in the
future.

So you just want to configure them once and use the same configuration
?
In that case, there is still no connection between them so you
currently need to configure them separately.

If you can accept to configure them both in the RSS News Ticker and
Custom Clock Helper, you can setup multiple "rsstext" item and put them
in different "visibilitygroup" values, this will ensure that the first
one is shown until it has gone through its RSS feed and it will then
switch the the second one and then to the third one and...

It's currently not as easy to configure as the RSS News Ticker where
you can simply just list the RSS feeds, I'll consider improving the
configuration in future versions but it will probably not happen in the
near future. The best solution would probably be to add a new item that
just read the configuration from the "RSS News Ticker" plugin.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch As Pre-amp

2011-01-25 Thread mraub1

I'm new to digital audio, so pardon if this question sounds asinine.

I'm assembling a 2-channel music system. A pair of Magnepan 1.7's are
on order and I've purchased an Emotiva XPA-2 (500 w/ch @ 4 ohms--the
Maggies are massively power hungry). By all accounts on this board and
others, the Touch's DAC is decent enough that most people can't
distinguish its output from a much more expensive dedicated DAC.

Since the Touch has a volume control I can't I need any additional gear
for a decent hifi system. What I can't determine is whether the analog
Touch outputs will drive the amp hard enough for use with very
inefficient speakers like the Magnepan's. The book that came with the
touch had no specification of the maximum voltage the Touch can output
from the analog jacks.

Is driving the XPA-2 with the Touch's analog outputs going to work?
Emotiva also sells a relatively inexpensive digital pre-amp, but I
can't see buying if I don't need it.

Thanks for any advice.

OK, I'm sticking a fork in:)

But seriously, I personally find it intriguing that people embrace the
'norm' (the 'official', 'right' way of approaching the reality), and
then have enough arrogance to even label it 'enlightened philosophy'.
You are no doubt aware of the fact that, in the days long gone by,
completely different approaches have also been labeled 'enlightened
philosophy', approaches that are causing today's mainstream populace
make fun of.

Crowds will follow fashion, but fashion is fickle. At the end of the
day, collective amnesia sets in. Someone ends up doing computer
programming for a living (btw, I have 21 years of professional computer
programming skills under my belt), and then they think that they have a
licence to claim how they're much more 'enlightened' than some other
people who don't know how to program computers.

I'm calling bullshit on that. I know how to program computers, and I
know that there isn't anything special about that skill. It's the same
as accounting, or any other 'boring' bureaucratic expertise.

What really matters is the human aspect of it. Machines and
measurements can't tell us anything about how we feel.

Not looking for synchronization. Just looking for a custom tag that
can display the various items one-by-one in the several RSS feeds
listed in the RSS News Ticker Screen Saver setttings. ie, behaviour

I'm sorry, I thought I was done, but this appeared while I was writing
my earlier reply, and it is just plain gibberish. Look at it this way.
If there isn't a difference between two things (eg two versions of the
music played by your Touch) and your brain is telling you there is,
then, by definition, you are deceiving yourself. Where's your self
esteem now?

The more of this I read, the more I'm starting to think you are some

I'm not suggesting your imagination isn't real.

I'm quite comfortable with the idea that your own expectation bias
leads to a REAL improvement in the sound THAT YOU PERCEIVE. That's
great. These are free mods, and they do nobody any harm (apart from
killing certain value added functions of the Touch, limiting your
options for upgrading etc). What does annoy me though is the
assumption that these mods, even if there's no way they can have the
slightest physical effect on the output (the volume maximising mod for
instance), will affect the sound THAT I PERCEIVE. The suggestion that
I should try it myself before forming an opinion is insulting - as
someone with a reasonable amount of programming experience, I can say
with complete certainty that evaluating an algorithm and then
substituting the result with the same hard coded value can have no
effect. I don't need to test it in order to know that.

It's rare that such a patently false claim comes along to illustrate
this point. Normally the claim concerns something that is much harder
to quantify - the effect of different interconnects, bi-wiring, power
supplies etc. Anyone interested in improving the ACTUAL sound quality
might feel compelled to shell out real money to test them, but once
they've done that they've already been caught in the expectation bias
trap, and it becomes incredibly difficult to get to the truth. So we
come back to objective testing.

Personally I find it intriguing that different individuals can have
such different outlooks. You referred yesterday to my
'engineering/scientific superstition'. I see it as the complete
opposite of a superstition - I see it as an enlightened philosophy -
and I see your blind adherence to the edicts of an audiophile guru as
the misguided superstition. But I guess that's just something we
should agree to disagree on.

But isn't 'listener own brain' part of what you've labeled here
'objective reality'? If yes, how is it then that what exists in that
part of the objective reality is not part of that same objective
reality?

You see, these things have to remain coherent, they have to make
logical sense if you're to argue using such premises.

This is a fairly accurate description of how humans perceive reality.
Yes, you're right, reality has the tendency to wear off, people get
fatigued by it, and need fresh experiences in order to kick start the
process again.

Eventually, tiredness takes the best out of even the most enthusiastic
people, and then they die.

Mnyb;605395 Wrote:

Where in the heck did you get that approach from? 'Nullify the human
factor'? What could be gained by doing that? We're not robots, and it's
basically all precisely about the human factor. What other factor is
there, anyway?

People are trying to pretend that their own subjective yardsticks don't
matter, but it's just a product of the foolish attempts by those who
would love to control others to subvert their self esteem. Everyone
needs to eventually grow up and come to terms with the fact that it's
all about subjective states and how you intimately feel about
something. Nothing else matters. If you like something, you'll enjoy
it. If you don't like something, you'll try to avoid it. Simple as
that.

Anything else, and you're just fallen prey of the bullies who are
trying to manipulate and control you. Trust your own gut! Distrust
'authorities' and 'establishment'.

Simply .

*Is there a real difference (measure).

*If it exists, is it really an improvement and not the opposite.

*If it exists can it actually be heard , you can measure a lot of
things that nobody can hear .

*Now we can waste our own precious time to experience whatever we are
trying to do :)

You can discover real things by chance too , but it's very inefficient,
the Audiophile way of try the random thing has made hifi a very ludite
thing with little or no progress for the last 20 years. It is very
often going backwards (direct heated triode amps anyone).

Glad to hear it. To follow your medicinal analogy, the only reason we
have medicine in our society is so that it can be applied to cure
people who are sick. There is absolutely no other reason why we have
medicine.

Same is with audio components (such as Logitech Touch) -- the only
reason we have them around is to be able to enjoy music. If someone
gives me a modified component that is going to make me enjoy music even
more, I'll take it (especially if, as in this case, it's free:)

I am not looking for explanations -- same as, after having sex with a
gorgeous woman, I'm not interested in scientific explanations as to how
come that sex felt so good. It just does; it feels good, it feels great,
no need to explain or measure anything, just looking forward to another
glorious intercourse (and, of course, many, many more to come;)

My Squeezeboxserver runs on Linux, not Windows, but I know file
permissions are a critical issue with Linux. In Linux, Squeezeboxserver
sets up its own user, but it needs access to the files owned by the
regular user.

You might check the directory security settings for Windows to see if
everyone has appropriate access to the music directory and files.

A mystery then ? hopefully you only added rg tags with foobar and did
not run some normalization process ?
I have not used foobar since 2006 So I'm not up tp speed with the
current plugins for fb2k .

maybe you can try to rip a CD again and not using your foobar process
and compare that CD aginst the flac files, or wav files just for the
test.
Just to exclude things in rip and tag routine :-/

Do you have EAC or dBpoweramp ?

Only analog devices in my system are a vinyl player and the chassis

Also, all replay gain features are disabled although replay gain tags

Ah, I see. "Keep it well hidden", Atrus said.

The changing name (build) makes it a nightmare for a (Arch) package
builder. Is there a symlink to latest version? It seems that the

Is the NAD connected *digitally* to the T & A ?

If it's by analog levels can be anything so you cant really compare
and it really does not mean anything.

But if you are using *lossless* files (flac ,wav and similar) of the
same CD the level should be identical to that of the CD .
If both Touch and CD is connected digitally .

Unless your T&A have some input level controls for different inputs ?
try the same input to be sure.

Or you are using replaygain tags or the iTunes soundcheck tags.
Go to settings > player >audio > "Volume Adjustment/Replay Gain" and
turn that off.

Or you had done some normalization while ripping the music , not
recommended :-/ sorry rip again .

Digital output is connected to my T+A digital preamp + digital active

The sound is audibly better than with the duet receiver.
But the output volume is still less than from my NAD C565BEE.

Shouldn't this be normalized?

Did you do factory reset before you upgraded?
I think I mentioned it on the blog. You need
to get a clean base first to avoid inconsistencies.

You'll have to reinstall the Toolbox after firmware
upgrades.

I won't support upgrades neither today nor in the future.
You'll always have to do a fresh installation of my Toolbox on a
factory reseted system.

There was another question earlier today regarding 7.5.3 support:

For now I'll stretch my legs. (At least in this area)

My own box sounds better then ever before and everything
works just fine.

Every follow-up on every mini-update take numerous hours of testing
and preparation and documentation and support.
I'm not making money with it. This all means serious overtime on my
side of the balance sheet.

Beside that I havn't seen any serious changes popping up in 7.5.3.

BTW my instructions say: "Turn off automatic upgrades"

Cheers

I think your audiophile license has been revoked by now;)

You are my favorite snake oil salesman because, unlike other snake oil
salesmen, you charge $0.00 for your snake oil.

And what a snake oil it is! I'm enjoying every minute of it:)

Thanks again, Klaus. So now with all these mods, is it true that the
only unconquered territory on the Touch is the fact that the screen,
even though disabled, is still operating in the 'touch sensitive' mode?
If that mode was to be disabled, do you figure it could make
improvements to the sound?

Or are there other things on the Touch that are still left unmodded?

Yes you can have the same result by simply keeping the volume at 100%
and check that it is so from time to time .

100=100

But locking it is good then you can not adjust it by mistake which is
easy to do , you have so many ways of controlling the SB and all of
them can adjust volume ir remote controller web-UI and the Touch
interface itself squeezeplay, Radio etc.

This patch or the latest soundcheck mod replaces the same code in the
same file so , or you can simply hack it yourself with ssh and vi .

Hello, welcome to the forum!

You probably thought correctly but mixed it up when writing it down: If
you connect via digital, you in fact let the AV receiver do the
conversion to analogue. If you connect using RCA (cinch), the Touch
does the conversion.

Like Phil says, let your ears be the judge!

But there's one more thing. Some AV receivers convert all analogue
input to digital for internal processing. In these cases, it only makes
sense to connect any source digitally if at all possible, to avoid
unnecessary loss of quality by back and forth D/A & A/D conversions.
Also, if you have multichannel material (DTS encoded audio tracks),
digital is the only option.

Some AV receivers have a special operating mode where the analogue
input is passed directly to the preamp, and no DSP is done (nor
possible). In these cases, feeding analogue signal into the AV receiver
is OK. I don't know about yours, you should be able to find the answer
in the manual. Anyway, if you are doing any DSP (sound adjustment, EQ,

But in the end, what sounds the best to you is what matters. You might
not be able to tell a difference at all.

well, it all depends. I've been running it for many months now without
any serious or persistent issues. But... I have a vanilla setup with
few plugins, XP (SP3) flac+mp3 only.

7.6 certainly performs faster for me on scans and in general browsing
(I use the web ui a lot).

7.6 works very well with SQLIte and not so well with MYSql.
MYSql support will be deprecated or stabilised eventually anyway
according to the Devs. I've made that leap already.

Unfortunately nobody can answer that for you - you will have to try
them both for yourself and see which sound you prefer.

converting?

The patch has been download a couple of hundred times. It should work.

You can run e.g.:

which ttvol100

to see if the file is there.

In one case it happened that tar archives got corrupted. In such a case
you just download and reinstall it again. Make sure you're at "/"
directory when unpacking.

I'm not sure it was ever followed rigidly by anyone, including Philips
and Sony :-)
