Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] A DAC for the SB

2011-01-01 Thread Alco

Here's a picture I made of the dac I'm using with my SB Touch.

[image: http://members.home.nl/koerts/Metrum_dac_close-up.JPG]

It's a small, handmade yet affordable dac called the *Metrum NOS mini
DAC*.

I ordered it blindly, without any try-before-you-buy option, after only
1 raving review on a populair Dutch HiFi-site. (sorry, only in Dutch)

It's made by a company that's more specialized in electrostatic
speakers, but they sure have a hit with this little dac. It can only be
ordered directly from the manufacterer, and the current waiting-list is
8-10 weeks, and the price has gone up about 20% since yesterday.

Nevertheless,...for only €345,- (I paid €295,- about 5
weeks ago) it's a steal.
My previous dac was the Cambridge dacmagic (hooked up to my previous SB
Classic), but the Cambridge dac didn't do anything for the SB Touch.

The Metrum NOS dac is in a different leaque and especially excels in
the mids, making voices sound breathtaking natural. Also the soundstage
becomes bigger/deeper.

Too bad this little dac is prety rare and there's no (English) review
or dealer network for it. I think it would sell like hot-cakes if they
were available at HiFi-shops.

Only small downside could be that it's only availabe in silver and it
comes with a small wall-wart PSU. (although it has an XLR plug at the
dac-side)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] A DAC for the SB

2010-12-24 Thread Alco

Hi John,

I have my SB Touch for about 6 months now and I like it very much!
It's very easy to operate, and sounds great for the money.

I tried 3 dac's so far and the results are quite remarkable.

The first dac I tried was the one I already had on my (previous) SB
Classic, namely the wellknown Cambridge Audio DACmagic.
It did some lovely things on the end of a SB Classic, but it didn't
seem to do anything for the Touch. (so, I sold the DACmagic in the end)

Then I tried the very expensive Naim dac. voices gained a little more
body and there was some more depth into the soundstage...that's about
it.
Nice though, but only if the price were about 1/3 of the price.
(the Naim dac costs about 9 times the price of the SB Touch here in
Holland)

Currently I have a dac that had the same price as the SB Touch.
It's a very small, handmade dac called the Metrum NOS mini Dac.
(only available by ordering directly from the manufacturer,
http://www.metrum-acoustics.nl/NOS_mini_DAC.html).

After a raving review on a Dutch HiFi site I decided to take the plunge
and order one.
I got a mail that I was placed on the waiting list of about 4 weeks!
(they were already sold out!)

I'm still not really sure if I can live with the reproduction of the
high frequenties, as they're a little too smooth/polished to my taste.
(I'd like a bit more sparkle and bite)
Still,...the midrange is truly wonderful! (even better than the Naim
DAC!)
Voices sound so pure and lifelike.

I understand that it's difficult to recommend a very unknown brand dac,
that's only got 1 online review (in Dutch) so far, and is only available
by contacting the manufacterer, but I only wanted to say that the right
dac really can make a positive difference on the SB Touch.

Eventhough the SB Touch already sounds pretty good on its own, and in
my experience the price of a dac doesn't say that much.

regards,
Alco

Yes,...I did, yesterday. No luck either.

It seems that Murphy's law is haunting me again...

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SB Touch Screen Display - larger fonts?

2010-09-06 Thread Alco

I asked a Dutch store that is specialized in streaming audio products
the same question recently, and they told me it's not possible.
(unfortunately)

I found the contrast/readability is best when you choose the simple
black background.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] No internetradio

2010-09-06 Thread Alco

At this moment internetradio is working fine on my Touch.

What disturbs me the most is browsing through my music collection on my
HD/PC.
The Touch is placing 50 albums (from my 602 albums)in a so-called 'new
albums' map.
(most of these albums aren't new at all, but ripped >2 years ago)

It's very annoying to browse through my collection, to notice that a
certain album is not in there, so I have to navigate back to the 'new
album' map, to search for that album there. (which aren't placed on
alf.order of artist either)

I'm running the latest version of SBS.

[SlimDevices: Touch] No internetradio

2010-09-04 Thread Alco

Today I received my Squeezebox Touch. (ordered it yesterday evening!)

As I was using a SB Classic for the last 2,5 years without any (worth
mentioning) problems, I kinda hoped the Touch to work flawless through
the same connection and account on mysqueezebox.com

Unfortunately,...as expected, I was wrong. :(
It didn't connect to my wireless router. Luckily I had some meters of
CAT5 cable lying around, so I tried hooking it up wired, and... it
worked.

Well,...that is...only music from HD/PC but no internetradio.
The choice of going to internetradio is not even mentioned on the
display!
Also,... a few albums are missing when I browse through my ripped
CD-collection.
(all very strange, as they're still there on my HD/PC together with my
favoriete radio-stations that are locked onto my Squeezebox.com
account)

Hmm,..I wish those PC-based music-servers where as plug-and-play
(instead of plug-and-pray) as the good ol' CD-player or turntable.

Can anyone help me out with this please
thanks in advance!

regards,
Alco

I know John, but in the NP screen the time-bar is so teenyweeny small.

If the Touch doesn't even show track nr. and it's not possible to
customize the info size, I'm getting less tempted to take the step from
SB3 to the Touch. :(

Whoopssorry, I meant 3,5 meters to be >10 feet. (instead of 30)

Ok, I'll just try it as it is. Luckily there's a Logitech dealer in my
area who will hopefully have the Touch in stock pretty soon, so I can
try before I buy. :)

Thank you very much John. That was the info I was looking for.
(although I was hoping for something else, as it seems I now have a get
a controller or Ipod Touch as well, to be able to use a Touch)

Currently I sit about 3,5 meters (>30 feet ?) from my SB Classic, when
I liston to music.

Thanks for the quick response, Aubuti.

I also hope I can see the elapsed and remaining time on the Touch's
display, by pushing/holding the >>| button on the remote for about 3
seconds. (like on the SB3)

[SlimDevices: Touch] Display info character size

2010-04-10 Thread Alco

Hi y'all,

I have a SB Classic and I'm considering going for the SB Touch.
Still, I'm wondering this:

Is it possible not to choose album cover-art to show in the display ?
I mean is it possible to disable cover art and therefor use the whole
width of the display and choose a larger character size ?

I always have the character size on my SB3 display set on large,
otherwise I can't read the info on the display from a few meters
distance.
If it's not possible to change characte size on the Touch, I'd be more
or less forced to buy a Controller as well. (or get an Ipod, to use as
remote)

regards,
Alco
