Technically yes, but Logitech would need to pay a lot of money to license an
artwork provider. A good opportunity for a 3rd party plugin for sure.

Unfortunately you will need to have at least ports 3483 and 9000 open for
outgoing connections. Your IT department shouldn't really be blocking outgoing

For ext4 we would just use whatever driver is in the kernel, but we have no
plans to update the kernel at this time.

HFS+, which appears to need a commercial ($$$) driver, isn't going to happen.

I would recommend ext3 for best performance, or FAT32 if you need maximum

Correct, WMA Lossless is surprisingly very CPU-intensive and we are lucky it
even works on Touch. In fact WMA Pro is less CPU-intensive than Lossless! Save

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox and Musepack

2010-04-17 Thread Andy Grundman
The short answer is that we currently support SV7 (and I think
earlier) versions.

The long answer is that for whatever reason the MPC team wanted to
make their format even harder to adopt by completely changing
everything for SV8. In doing so they also rewrote the decoder (now
mpcdec instead of mppdec) and the new decoder does not have the right
command-line options for us to use it as a drop-in upgrade. I have
talked to them about this but they weren't really interested in adding
the missing features. I think there are probably literally only a
handful of people who care about MPC so it's not really worth our time
to try to patch their decoder. So if you have new material you want to
encode in a lossy format and are considering SV8 I would request that
you think again and use another format.

Sure, the UPnP mode should work. But we never built an SP UI for it,
so it would only appear on ip3k players.

Actually it should be fixed to not use any MySQL-specific SQL so it
will work with either database. This is usually not very hard.

Right, you can't access a remote NAS drive with Touch's built-in server. You
have to run the regular SBS for this situation.

You could certainly do it yourself, but it's not officially supported, for 2
main reasons:

1. We don't want to build a UI for browsing/selecting a network share.
3. We'd have to store the database on the network drive, making the server
very, very slow.

Yeah this thread worries me a bit, not because I think TinySC is doing

You're kidding right? You think we have the time or the expertise to develop
*filesystem drivers*?? Besides, if HFS+ were that well documented there would
already be a very good driver. The fact that there is only a read-only driver
(for journaled mode) suggests this is not the case (or that nobody cares).

Anyway, I don't see a need to support HFS+ on Touch, do any drives come

I have to say this is completely the wrong way to go. Nobody, especially the
target user for TinySC, wants to care about scanning, a database, or anything!
The use case I want to get to is this:

Plug in USB drive.
Popup on screen "initializing..." or something for a few seconds at most.
My Music -> USB Drive Name
2 menu items:
"Scan Progress: 1%, 1 hour remaining"
  "Music Folder"
Music Folder -> can browse/play from the music folder structure until the
scanner has finished scanning in the background.
After scanning is finished, the usual Artist, Album, etc menu items are present
in the menu. Maybe the menu populates as things as scanned like in the regular
server.

Bottom line is, you need to be able to play music off the drive within a very
short amount of time. The tricky part is the scanner is going to have to run
in the main server process for this to work, due to the limited memory
available. So we need to get that right, and as fast as possible. I think we
can get there...

Yep.

There is no such thing as standby.

Rescan will be automatic as soon as you drop new files on the share.

We are using the storage on the disk for the database, cache, etc.

The database will be stored on your hard drive in a '.Squeezebox'
directory. There is no size limit but a large library such as this
will require a long time to scan for example. And obviously if you
connect a drive with very little free space you will have issues.

We intend to support ALAC natively but we don't have the codec working

It should be able to run full SBS. I have no idea about powersaving,
but it probably uses minimal power as it is.

These Sheeva-based devices are great and can support transcoding. I
hope we can get an official build out for them sometime soon.

This feature is coming so there's not much point in arguing about it.
The basics are already done, it just needs to be polished up. :)

Why? If you want to use iTunes it means you have a computer running,
and you should be running the server on your computer, not Touch.

Some drives work, some don't. If it works on a computer, it may or
may not work on Touch. It sucks but some drive manufacturers don't
follow the spec and require more power. You can sometimes tell this
is the case if the drive came with dual USB plugs (i.e. it uses twice
the power). We have a wiki page with devices that work, we will need
to move this to the public wiki.

It's there but disabled as it is everywhere else. Plans are to
rewrite the UPnP code at some point since it's quite bad now, but this
is a low priority.
