In the end it all comes down to the level of risk you want to take on. If disaster strikes and your main drive fails during or just before a backup; and your backup drive fails as well then you loose everything. This is a scenario which is unlikely to occur in my configuration. Single drives cannot be trusted. The additional energy cost is no concern: for the additional protection my system offers the "additional" energy cost is sub zero in my mind. Note that I use my NAS drive for more than my music library: none of my laptop computers have data stored locally; everything resides on the NAS (and also get backup-ed. krochat wrote: > > You DO NOT want RAID. The correct wording is: you don't want RAID 0 or 1 (usually two drive RAID systems). But you do want at least RAID 5 (at least three drives). RAID 5 (+) gives you two major pro's: 1. you'll have an easy way to increase your storage when needed (by replacing / using bigger drives). The RAID system will automatically take care of the expansion. And in the mean time you have access to your files. This is not possible with a single drive solution. Copying large files over to a new large drive takes a very long time. 2. RAID 5 (or more) provides redundancy. If a drive fails between backups then you don't loose any data (as opposed to single drive, none RAID, systems). And the RAID system will warn you upfront of drive failure. In this case you have the chance to replace the drive before it fails. My main RAID system is a ReadyNAS NVX running Raid 5 (currently three drives fitted). It gets automatically back'd up every night to another NAS. This setup has been running for many many years without a single hiccup. I did increase the storage size once (up until now). RAID systems have been around for ages and are rock solid. They are used by all professional companies. It usually is human error if something fails in computerland. Just don't forget to backup (whatever system you are running !!). Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Toslink's optical vs rca digital cable
The official specification for coax S/PDIF is RCA not BNC. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF The professional AES interface even uses an XLR connector! Since the S/PDIF signal is quite low frequency, the connector won't have much influence on the signal anyway. First install the Patch Installer (through the applet installer). Next install the Reduce Screensaver Brightness patch (though the patch installer). This patch allows you to set both maximum and minimum brightness. I also use this patch to have a brighter screen when the Touch is playing in a low light environment. Works great. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Okay to always have the screen on?
My Touch is a couple of years old now and I leave it on 24/7. The display still works fine. When idle, my Touch shows the clock and weather forecast from the SDT plugin. On the positive side, the Touch has an environment light sensor that adjusts the display brightness according to the available ambient light (automatic brightness control). So at night it is quite dark and that will prolong the displays life for sure. The automatic brightness control is configurable in the Touch. You can adjust the minimum and maximum brightness settings. The ping test indicates that the issue is with the SB player. The next thing to do is to reset it, which probably happened by the reboot. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Spontaneous "Connecting to..." messages
Maybe the SBT has some issues with its radio. To test for a stable network connection you might want to do this: * Open a CMD prompt on your computer (Start > Run > cmd [enter]) * Type the following command: ping -t Example: ping 192.168.10.10 -t This will start a continuous ping to the SBT. If you notice some Request timed out then it means that the SBT loses its network connection. You can stop the continuous pinging by typing CTRL C. After reading many good things about the EDO applet I decided to give it a go. I installed the applet as indicated in the first post of this thread. The M-DAC is connected directly to the SBT through USB. After installing the applet I selected the M-DAC as output and the option without the USB hub workaround. My SBT is now constantly rebooting. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Upgrading the clocks in the SBT - is it necessary
A good upgrade to the Touch can be a decent DAC. The clock inside the Touch is not that bad. John Westlake (designer of the previous DacMagic DACs , the Audiolab M-DAC and other award winning gear) has tested the SBT and found that the clock is getting re-clocked inside the Touch. That is pretty amazing for a streamer at this price point. Re-clocking is something youd expect on high-end gear. So, dont worry about the Touch clock. In my main listening setup Im using the SBT with the M-DAC. The SBT is connected with optical SPDIF to the M-DAC. Works perfect and the sound quality is excellent. [SlimDevices: Touch] Please..talk to me like I'm 5 yo.--Quest re: touch to replace CD collection.
Another alternative is a decent NAS (Network Atached Storage). It is basically a bunch of hard drives connected to the network. The advantage is that it provides redundancy should one of the drives fail. (You still need a backup system for 100% fail save). The second advantage is that you can run LMS on the NAS to serve your Squeezeboxes. And a third advantage is that a NAS is a set it up and forget kind of system. No need to install OS patches or updates every month or so. There are plenty of NAS's out there that support LMS. Just pick one with an x86 architecture so that you have plenty of horse power. As a fan of the ReadyNAS lineup I suggest to have a look at the Ultra series: http://www.readynas.com/?cat=88 Pascal Hibon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7969 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95360 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

You can get rid of the protection by converting the songs in iTunes. If you right click a song you'll see "Create XXX version". XXX is the audio format which is currently configured (edit -> preferences). After this action you'll have two copies of the song: the original, which is the protected one, and a copy which is not protected. You could delete the original. It is also possible to convert multiple songs. Simply select the songs you'd like to convert, right click and select "Create XXX version". Wow, that is fast! I installed the beta version of the patch and this is what I observed (after configuring it): 1. I use the Now Playing screensaver with the analog VU meters when playing. The screensaver delay is set at 10 seconds. The brightness control works the same as previously; it is controlled by the environment light and the patch has no effect on it. 2. I also use a screensaver when the SBT is off (SDT wheather with custom clock plugin). Trouble with that is that the patch now adjusts the minimum brightness as set in minimum brightness (screensaver) control. This is a behaviour I dont want. In the OFF state the brightness should be as set in the minimum brightness. The patch as it is now doesnt work for me because I alsways use a screensaver and it would make the display too bright when the SBT is off. It is strange though that the patch doesnt work on the now playing screensaver. Instead of acting on screensavers there should be a minimum brightness when playing setting and only use that setting when the SBT is playing. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Automatic brightness control
I already had that patch installed but it wasnt working. Now I know why: I had the Touch set to automatic brightness control instead of manual (which is required for your plugin to work). Your plugin will solve my issue when playing music in the evening but it creates a new issue: the display brightness is now too low during the day. When the Touch is off, the display is dimmed and is now unreadable in normal daylight. The ideal solution would be to use autoamatic brightness control but limit the minimun treshold to a certain level (configurable) when playing. I use the automatic brightness control and have set the minimum brightness to the minimum setting. The automatic brightness control seems to work very well for most cases. Especially at night, the display is very dim which is how I like it. The only thing that bothers me about the brightness control is that when playing music in the evening (there is light but the room is darker than during daytime) the brightness is way too low and the display is unreadable. Edit the jstraws_squeezebox_touch_enhancements.xml file: a. Change http://www.smallproblem.com/touchmeter/ with the correct location on your local server. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] port 9000
If I understand correctly then the issue that you have is that your Touch does not connect to your local SBS server, correct? First check that the SBS version that you installed is at least version 7.5.0. Older versions of SBS do not support the Touch. The next thing to check is that your Touch is properly configured. It should be setup to connect to SBS. From the home menu go to My Music > Switch Library. There you need to select the computer name of your laptop. If it still doesnt work the check if SBS is running on your laptop. I dont have a windows install but if I recall correctly it is able to run as a service. So in Services it should be running. Port 9000 is used to configure your SBS server by means of you web browser. -- Pascal Hibon 2 x SB3, 1 x SB Boom and 1 x SB Radio - all wireless ReadyNAS NVX running SBS iPeng on iPod Touch. +1 for iPeng and iPhone. The iPhone 4 is supposed to have better battery capacity now. I too bought the NV+ to retire my Windows based file server. I was pretty p**d to find out that the NV+ isnt running well with SBS. The good thing is that your DUO is quite new so you can sell it without too much loss. Hammering Netgear wont do much good. Technically they didnt say anything wrong. SBS does run on the DUO (and other Sparc based processors). They just didnt tell anyone that it runs kinda slow. -- Pascal Hibon 2 x SB3 and 1 x Boom - all wireless, ReadyNAS NVX running SBS, iPeng on iPod Touch. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and readynas
Ive has a ReadyNAS NV+ before running SBS, two SB3s and one Boom. I used iPeng remote as well. The NV+ is comparable to the DUO performance wise. The NV+ does fine when only using the SBs to stream music. Once you ask a bit more, such as using the iPeng remote, things became quite slow. Also iPeng is quite slow on the NV+. I decided to sell my NV+ and I bought an NVX instead. The difference is huge. Performance with the NVX is top notch. I can only suggest you to do the same: sell the DUO and get an x86 powered ReadyNAS. The NVX Pioneer of the ULTRA series is what you need to look at. -- Pascal Hibon 2 x SB3 and 1 x Boom - all wireless, ReadyNAS NVX running SBS, iPeng on iPod Touch. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch-fatigue
I have also looked at Sonos before choosing Slimdevices (this is several years ago and at that time they were still called Slimdevices). Although the Sonos system looks nice, it had a couple of disadvantages compared to Slimdevices: Sonos is quite expensive. Youre basically buying a streaming device and before you have 1 stremaer running, it will set you back a multitude of Slimdevice players. I find the build quality of Sonos inferior compared to slimdevices. The choice of players is limited compared to the Logitech line up. Sonos uses a mesh wireless system. And it runs in the same 2.4 G band as WiFi (two disatvantages here). Personaly I dont like this because their mesh network is closed. And you dont really need two wireless networks in your home network. Of course, these are my personal findings. Other people might think differently about it. The one disatvantage to the Logitech system is that it is more complex than the Sonas system in terms of setting it up. Sonos did a very good job at making it very user friendly to setup. The Logitech system requires a deeper technical knoledge. But once you get passed that it works very well. The fact that you do need (in some cases) an aditional server (SBS) provides good atvantages. Although people quite say that this is a disatvantage. As mentioned by others, SBS provides many advantages when browsing your library. I have used a dedicated server to run SBS several years ago. But since a couple of years Im running SBS on my NAS and that was a great improvement. I dont need to care about the dedicated server anymore. Now that SBS is running on my NAS it is a setup and forget about it situation. It is part of the infrastructure. -- Pascal Hibon 2 x SB3 and 1 x Boom - all wireless, ReadyNAS NVX running SBS, iPeng on iPod Touch. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Usb 3.0?
Today, only a handful of manufactures have products on the market with USB 3 interfaces. It will take some time before the USB 3 standard will be widely spread. Keep in mind that not all devices need the performance of USB 3 and for many applications USB 2 will do just fine. Many OSs have yet to provide support for USB 3. As already mentioned, it is backwards compatible too. For a streaming application such as the Touch, I guess USB 2 standard will be sufficient as well. -- Pascal Hibon __ 2 x SB3 - both wireless, ReadyNAS NVX running SBS, iPeng on iPod Touch.
