In the end it all comes down to the level of risk you want to take on.
If disaster strikes and your main drive fails during or just before a
backup; and your backup drive fails as well then you loose everything.
This is a scenario which is unlikely to occur in my configuration.
Single drives cannot be trusted.
The additional energy cost is no concern: for the additional protection
my system offers the "additional" energy cost is sub zero in my mind.
Note that I use my NAS drive for more than my music library: none of my
laptop computers have data stored locally; everything resides on the NAS
(and also get backup-ed.

The correct wording is: you don't want RAID 0 or 1 (usually two drive
RAID systems). But you do want at least RAID 5 (at least three drives).
RAID 5 (+) gives you two major pro's:
1. you'll have an easy way to increase your storage when needed (by
replacing / using bigger drives). The RAID system will automatically
take care of the expansion. And in the mean time you have access to your
files. This is not possible with a single drive solution. Copying large
files over to a new large drive takes a very long time.
2. RAID 5 (or more) provides redundancy. If a drive fails between
backups then you don't loose any data (as opposed to single drive, none
RAID, systems). And the RAID system will warn you upfront of drive
failure. In this case you have the chance to replace the drive before it
fails.

My main RAID system is a ReadyNAS NVX running Raid 5 (currently three
drives fitted). It gets automatically back'd up every night to another
NAS. This setup has been running for many many years without a single
hiccup. I did increase the storage size once (up until now). RAID
systems have been around for ages and are rock solid. They are used by
all professional companies. It usually is human error if something fails
in computerland. Just don't forget to backup (whatever system you are
running !!).

The official specification for coax S/PDIF is RCA not BNC.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF The professional AES interface even
uses an XLR connector!
Since the S/PDIF signal is quite low frequency, the connector won't have
much influence on the signal anyway. I just have to laugh at these
DIY'ers who modify there gear without even measuring the difference the
"mods" made.

Oh but I am. The Touch optical, coax compared to the RPI's connected by
USB all sound the same to me. That suggests that the "jitter" and
"noise" coming out of the Touch's digital outputs are not too bad, and
certainly well below what's audible for human beings.

You should read Archimago's blogs from time to time. There you will find
many interesting articles who are backed by real measurements. There you
will soon understand that what you are stating is incorrect.

Sorry but that is just a "load of crap" as they say. I'm confident that
you don't even have the proper measurements to support that. And without
the proper measurements to support it you really should not say such
things.
As mentioned, I've compared (A/B listening) the Touch coax and optical

async connectivity is technically the superior one, I could not hear any

Yes that is so true. I just wanted to challenge skramer about the

I have compared the Touch with other SB a like products such as the RPI,

when the Touch optical and coax output is compared to a USB output from
one of the above devices.

For the older SB models you can use a plugin called Power Switch II.
This plugin does not work with the Touch and I don't think there is
another plugin solution for the Touch. But you can use an external
solution such as this:

I would suspect network issues.
Probably even wifi congestion issues. Everyone and everything is using
wifi these days and that can cause issues in some places.
You can find out how many and which wifi channels are in use in your
environment by using a free tool called 'inSSIDer'
Run that tool on your laptop and it will tell you what channel(s) are in
use and if the channel of your wifi network is too congested or not.

I don't think you will find lots of places where they actually repair

But maybe a friend who is an electronic engineer or maybe some

True. But there is a way around that.
First install the Patch Installer (through the applet installer). Next
install the Reduce Screensaver Brightness patch (though the patch
installer). This patch allows you to set both maximum and minimum
brightness. I also use this patch to have a brighter screen when the
Touch is playing in a low light environment. Works great.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Okay to always have the screen on?

2013-02-14 Thread Pascal Hibon

My Touch is a couple of years old now and I leave it on 24/7. The
display still works fine. When idle, my Touch shows the clock and
weather forecast from the SDT plugin.
On the positive side, the Touch has an environment light sensor that
adjusts the display brightness according to the available ambient light
(automatic brightness control). So at night it is quite dark and that
will prolong the display’s life for sure. The automatic brightness
control is configurable in the Touch. You can adjust the minimum and
maximum brightness settings.

The ping test indicates that the issue is with the SB player. The next
thing to do is to reset it, which probably happened by the reboot. But
if it should happen again, that certainly is the next step.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Spontaneous "Connecting to..." messages

Maybe the SBT has some issues with its radio. To test for a stable
network connection you might want to do this:

* Open a CMD prompt on your computer (Start > Run > cmd [enter])
* Type the following command: ping -t
Example: ping 192.168.10.10 -t

This will start a continuous ping to the SBT. If you notice some
‘Request timed out’ then it means that the SBT loses its network
connection.
You can stop the continuous pinging by typing CTRL C.

That's strange. Port 3483 (udp and tcp) is used by LMS to talk to the
Squeezeboxes. Port 9000 is used by LMS to display its configuration
pages. These should not be open on your router unless you intend to have
Squeezeboxes talk to your LMS over the Internet.

This applet doesn't like my Touch. Result is always the same: Touch ends
up in an endless reboot loop.
I also notice that the first time I install the EDO applet it says that
the kernel update failed. I then uninstall EDO and install it again.
That's when the Touch goes into an endless reboot loop.

installing the applet I selected the M-DAC as output and the option
without the USB hub workaround. My SBT is now constantly rebooting. When

You could try sources like Farnell or Conrad. I guess it is called

these enclosures seem to have Euorpean style connectors. Maybe you can

I didn’t try it with my SBT because that Squeezebox is connected to my

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Upgrading the clocks in the SBT - is it necessary

2012-06-22 Thread Pascal Hibon

A good “upgrade” to the Touch can be a decent DAC. The clock inside the
Touch is not that bad. John Westlake (designer of the previous DacMagic
DAC’s , the Audiolab M-DAC and other award winning gear) has tested the
SBT and found that the clock is getting re-clocked inside the Touch.
That is pretty amazing for a streamer at this price point. Re-clocking
is something you’d expect on high-end gear. So, don’t worry about the
Touch clock.
In my main listening setup I’m using the SBT with the M-DAC. The SBT is
connected with optical SPDIF to the M-DAC. Works perfect and the sound
quality is excellent.

I've done it on a couple of occasions. Maybe it is due to the fact that
you're converting them from AAC to AAC. As a test, you could try to
setup iTunes to rip to WAV (or another format of your choise). Next try
to convert them again.

First thing is to check that a compatible image format and naming has
been used (JPG, BPM). And secondly, the image cannot be larger than
600x600. Anything larger will get ignored.

Hm, never had issues with that. I don't think it is even possible to
enable DRM on ripped CD's. DRM was implemented to try and stop illegal
copies of purchased music though the iTunes store. Apple probably
realized that even DRM was not a good protection for that. As mentioned
earlier, it is very easy to get rid of the DRM protection.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Please..talk to me like I'm 5 yo.--Quest re: touch to replace CD collection.

2012-06-03 Thread Pascal Hibon

Another alternative is a decent NAS (Network Atached Storage). It is
basically a bunch of hard drives connected to the network. The advantage
is that it provides redundancy should one of the drives fail. (You still
need a backup system for 100% fail save).
The second advantage is that you can run LMS on the NAS to serve your
Squeezeboxes. And a third advantage is that a NAS is a set it up and
forget kind of system. No need to install OS patches or updates every
month or so.
There are plenty of NAS's out there that support LMS. Just pick one with
an x86 architecture so that you have plenty of horse power. As a fan of
the ReadyNAS lineup I suggest to have a look at the Ultra series:

You can get rid of the protection by converting the songs in iTunes. If
you right click a song you'll see "Create XXX version". XXX is the audio
format which is currently configured (edit -> preferences).
After this action you'll have two copies of the song: the original,
which is the protected one, and a copy which is not protected. You could
delete the original.
It is also possible to convert multiple songs. Simply select the songs
you'd like to convert, right click and select "Create XXX version".

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80231

Question: How much would you be willing to pay for a Touch Wall Mounting
Bracket?

- $24.95
- $25 to 49.99
- $50 to $75.00
- I don't need one so not at any price!

Another possible option is to use companies such as Shaeffer AG. These
guys are based in Germany but there is a counterpart in the US. They
have their roots in building front panels but extended their business to
complete housings and even tooling. The company provides the design
software for free.
I have used them several times in the past, mainly for front panels. I
guess someone needs to create the design for a wall mount and then
either make the design available though this forum or organise a “bulk
purchase” for people who are interested. The later option would bring
the unit price down a bit.

release is 7.7.1. If you want to run beta software simply ignore the
Touch request for 7.7.1. update.

A second reason for the Touch asking for an “upgrade” is that it is
able to connect to mysqueezebox.com. That server is also running the
latest official 7.7.1 version.

If the now playing screen would work as a regular screensaver then your
plugin would not work anymore. Most states of the SBT are screensavers
(playing, stopped and off). So there would be no difference between the
SBT in the off state and playing state. Or am I missing something?

That makes sense. I have now configured the patch like you mention

Wow, that is fast!

I installed the beta version of the patch and this is what I observed
(after configuring it):

1. I use the “Now Playing” screensaver with the analog VU meters when
playing. The screensaver delay is set at 10 seconds. The brightness
control works the same as previously; it is controlled by the
environment light and the patch has no effect on it.
2. I also use a screensaver when the SBT is off (SDT wheather with
custom clock plugin). Trouble with that is that the patch now adjusts
the minimum brightness as set in “minimum brightness (screensaver)
control”. This is a behaviour I don’t want. In the “OFF” state the
brightness should be as set in the minimum brightness.

The patch as it is now doesn’t work for me because I alsways use a
screensaver and it would make the display too bright when the SBT is
off. It is strange though that the patch doesn’t work on the now
playing screensaver.

Instead of acting on screensavers there should be a “minimum brightness
when playing” setting and only use that setting when the SBT is playing.
If the SBT is in a not playing state then use automatic brightness
control.

That would be pitty. I don’t think this kind of modifictaion is very
difficult to implement. And it makes a lot sense for Logitech to

I would like it to work as following:
Always use automatic brightness control as it is working by default on
the SBT, except when playing. When playing, the automatic brightness
control should never go below a predefined “now playing minimum”. This
“now playing minimum” is a new minimum brightness setting just like the
minimum brightness setting that is already there.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Automatic brightness control

2012-02-27 Thread Pascal Hibon

I already had that patch installed but it wasn’t working. Now I know
why: I had the Touch set to automatic brightness control instead of
manual (which is required for your plugin to work).

Your plugin will solve my issue when playing music in the evening but
it creates a new issue: the display brightness is now too low during
the day. When the Touch is off, the display is dimmed and is now
unreadable in normal daylight.

The ideal solution would be to use autoamatic brightness control but
limit the minimun treshold to a certain level (configurable) when
playing. Could you modify your patch to do that?

[SlimDevices: Touch] Automatic brightness control

2012-02-26 Thread Pascal Hibon

I use the automatic brightness control and have set the minimum
brightness to the minimum setting. The automatic brightness control
seems to work very well for most cases. Especially at night, the
display is very dim which is how I like it.
The only thing that bothers me about the brightness control is that
when playing music in the evening (there is light but the room is
darker than during daytime) the brightness is way too low and the
display is unreadable. I did a search on the forum but I couldn’t find
any topics about this. Is there anyone who has the same “issue”?

There are a number of factors that exclude the drifting of my server
clock:

* When the Radio and Touch where drifting, the ReadyNAS, which is the
server, was still running on the correct time.

* None of my 4 SB’s get ever unplugged and they stay connected with my
server 24/7. I don’t use mysqueezebox.com (it is even disabled).

* Both IPK3 players, who have no clock logic inside, were running on
the correct time.

Only the SqueezeOS players had their time drifting when I noticed the
problem. It lasted for a couple of hours before both had the correct
time again. Very strange.

I don’t know how the Touch and Radio work when connected to a local LMS
server in terms of clock synchronizing so I don’t know if it is the same
problem.
But even if the offered solution in that thread works, it is a kind of
solution I don’t like. Since we have an LMS server running locally I
believe the Touch and Radio should sync with the clock of LMS.

For some strange reason, both my Touch and Radio are back on the right
time again (without me interfering with them). I’m a bit in the dark
about what happened here. Is there any log I could check that could
tell me what went on; maybe a log file on the Touch / Radio?

That really depends on your personal choice (sound quality) and budget.
You can go from a small system with powered speakers, like the Audio
Engine A2, to a full sized hifi system connected through an external
DAC.
Mine is connected to an external DAC on my main hifi system.

Besides LMS you also have the option of running TinySBS (LMS server
inside the Touch) and connect a USB hard drive to the Touch. As the
word suggests, TinySBS is a small version of LMS (less features and
less powerfull) but it let’s you listen to your music library.
I have a NAS where all my audio files are stored. My NAS is also
running LMS.

You can either use one of your existing PC’s to run LMS, or use a NAS
(no PC’s need to be running with this option) or connect a hard drive
directly to the Touch and use TinySBS.
You can also use the UNC to the location of your music (ex:
\\MyServer\Music\) instead of the drive letter.

It sounds like you’ll need to use the iTunes plugin. You first need to
install the plugin (through the plugin tab in LMS). Next enable and
configure the iTunes plugin.
If you’re using the iTunes plugin then the music folder entry in the
basic settings need to stay empty. Same for the Playlists Folder. The
iTunes plugin takes care of all this.
Be sure to install LMS 7.7.1 because previous versions have issues with
the iTunes plugin.

issues such as these. Best thing to do is to reformat the drive before
using it and to make sure that all the special software junk is gone.
If I'm not mistaken, the drive should be FAT32 in order to work with
the Touch.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Analogue/digital VU

2011-12-18 Thread Pascal Hibon

If you have a local HTTP server running then you could copy all jstraw’s
files over to your local HTTP server. There are a couple of things you
need to modify:
1. Edit the “jstraws_squeezebox_touch_enhancements.xml” file:
a. Change http://www.smallproblem.com/touchmeter/ with the correct
location on your local server. You need to do this for the three ZIP
files containing the images for the analogue VU’s. Example:
http://10.108.1.1/Intranet/touchmeter/
b. Change maxTarget and set it "7.7”

2. In LMS, set the Additional Repositories to the location of your
local copy. Example:
http://10.108.1.1/Intranet/touchmeter/jstraws_squeezebox_touch_enhancements.xml

To keep things simple it is best to keep the filenames and folder
structure the same as the original. I just upgraded to 7.7.1 and the
Vintage Dark Meters work great. My ReadyNAS NVX has a HTTP server
service that makes this an easy fix.

Most decent NAS'es have x86 proc. these days. There's a good change
that these NAS'es have more proc power than an old retired laptop you
buy for $50.

Besides that, a NAS is a setup and forget kind of device. No OS patches
or service packs to install every week or so.

There is also power considerations. NAS'es are built to run 24/7 and
have power tweaking settings. The old laptop will probably consume a
lot more power.

I'm just in a couple of days use of my new Touch and I'm kinda missing a
great feature the SB3 had. Actually this great feature was provided by a

I like to darken the display completely between a certain time period

any similar applet or patch for the Touch?

Or you could retire the D-Link NAS and get a decent NAS such as
ReadyNAS. This way you only have one machine running (and maintaining)
for LMS / music streaming. Have a look at the Ultra series. They are a

with great features. http://www.readynas.com/?cat=88.

As another alternative, you could buy a NAS (x86 architecture) and run
SBS on the NAS. In this case you don’t need to run TinySC in the Touch
and that will get rid of your low performance scans. A decent NAS has
more processing power than the Touch has. The library scans are very
fast and a NAS adds redundancy for your music files. I use a ReadyNAS
NVX and SBS performance is great.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] port 9000

2011-01-09 Thread Pascal Hibon

If I understand correctly then the issue that you have is that your
Touch does not connect to your local SBS server, correct?

First check that the SBS version that you installed is at least version
7.5.0. Older versions of SBS do not support the Touch.
The next thing to check is that your Touch is properly configured. It
should be setup to connect to SBS. From the home menu go to My Music >
Switch Library. There you need to select the computer name of your
laptop.
If it still doesn’t work the check if SBS is running on your laptop. I
don’t have a windows install but if I recall correctly it is able to
run as a service. So in Services it should be running.
If it still doesn’t run then I would try to created entries in the
Windows firewall for the port 3483.

I know how you feel. I too bought the NV+ to retire my Windows based
file server. I was pretty p**d to find out that the NV+ isn’t running
well with SBS.
The good thing is that your DUO is quite new so you can sell it without
too much loss.

Hammering Netgear won’t do much good. Technically they didn’t say
anything wrong. SBS does run on the DUO (and other Sparc based
processors). They just didn’t tell anyone that it runs kinda slow.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and readynas

2010-11-28 Thread Pascal Hibon

I’ve has a ReadyNAS NV+ before running SBS, two SB3’s and one Boom. I
used iPeng remote as well. The NV+ is comparable to the DUO performance
wise. The NV+ does fine when only using the SB’s to stream music. Once
you ask a bit more, such as using the iPeng remote, things became quite
slow. Also iPeng is quite slow on the NV+.

I decided to sell my NV+ and I bought an NVX instead. The difference is
huge. Performance with the NVX is top notch. I can only suggest you to
do the same: sell the DUO and get an x86 powered ReadyNAS. The NVX
Pioneer of the ULTRA series is what you need to look at.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch-fatigue

2010-11-26 Thread Pascal Hibon

I have also looked at Sonos before choosing Slimdevices (this is several
years ago and at that time they were still called Slimdevices). Although
the Sonos system looks nice, it had a couple of disadvantages compared
to Slimdevices:

• Sonos is quite expensive. You’re basically buying a streaming device
and before you have 1 stremaer running, it will set you back a
multitude of Slimdevice players.
• I find the build quality of Sonos inferior compared to slimdevices.
• The choice of players is limited compared to the Logitech line up.
• Sonos uses a mesh wireless system. And it runs in the same 2.4 G band
as WiFi (two disatvantages here). Personaly I don’t like this because
their mesh network is closed. And you don’t really need two wireless
networks in your home network.
Of course, these are my personal findings. Other people might think
differently about it.
The one disatvantage to the Logitech system is that it is more complex
than the Sonas system in terms of setting it up. Sonos did a very good
job at making it very user friendly to setup. The Logitech system
requires a deeper technical knoledge. But once you get passed that it
works very well. The fact that you do need (in some cases) an aditional
server (SBS) provides good atvantages. Although people quite say that
this is a disatvantage. As mentioned by others, SBS provides many
advantages when browsing your library.
I have used a dedicated server to run SBS several years ago. But since
a couple of years I’m running SBS on my NAS and that was a great
improvement. I don’t need to care about the dedicated server anymore.
Now that SBS is running on my NAS it is a setup and forget about it
situation. It is part of the infrastructure.

Today, only a handful of manufactures have products on the market with
USB 3 interfaces. It will take some time before the USB 3 standard will
be widely spread.
Keep in mind that not all devices need the performance of USB 3 and for
many applications USB 2 will do just fine. Many OS’s have yet to provide
support for USB 3.
As already mentioned, it is backwards compatible too.
For a streaming application such as the Touch, I guess USB 2 standard
will be sufficient as well.
