They do look challenged, don't they? The meters are using minimal CPU
resources so that they don't break something else. No idea what/if
there's a plan to further optimize graphics. I think Logitech is just
thankful that the product could be brought to market at this point.

So to me it seems CPU-bound...
When it stutters (analog VUs) top gives me CPU usage (approx values):

72% /usr/bin/jive
10% jive_alsa -d default -c default -b 200
8% jive-alsa -d plughw:2,0 -b 2 -p2
4%[sirq-tasklet/0]
2%[sirq-net-rx/0]
2%[IRQ-57]
2%[IRQ-34]

When it does not stutter, the major difference is in /usr/bin/jive
which goes down to approx 50%

Note in my scenario, when it stutters, it continues to stutter - until
I pause, get rid of the VUs, and restart the track...

As stated earlier my setup is cabled and I am rexperiencing minor

I'm not so sure about that. When memory gets very tight the memory
manager can assign physical memory that is currently occupied by code
(instructions) to a new memory request. This does not take swap space
because there is already backing store for the code. When that code
comes around to being run again a page fault happens and it has to be
loaded back into memory from backing store. If things are full some
other code area gets used for this. When IT gets run ...

This behavior does not cause a crash it just slows things down.

Of course the memory manager will try and only give out physical memory
used by code that has not been run in a long time. Thus the behavior
being seen by some people sort of makes sense: when you first start
playing high rez flac files you get some stuttering, but then it tends
to go away and you don't have problems from then on even when playing
new flac files. Over time things stabilize and the code in memory is
what is being used all the time.

The above scenario seems to me to be a reasonable possibility for what
is happening, thus trying to determine if problems only happen while
SBS is resident is important. It may not be what is happening but I
think its important to find out if it is or not.

Since we are now getting reports from people having problems with no
USB or SD attached its definitely pointing towards it not being a
memory issue.

But there was also a report of hi rez WAV file having problems, that
can't be the result of the flac decoder.

The variability in reports is interesting. I can play 24/96 -8 flacs
from an external server, wired or wireless, VU meters on without any
problems. Stopping, starting, changing files etc. It works perfectly.
Yet others are having problems with -5 files wired without visualizers.
That should be a BIG difference in CPU usage. That seems point to
something else going on other than just flac decoder.

The problem is not memory but CPU usage. There is no swap space, so if
you run out of memory things would be killed and you'd more than likely
have a forced reboot. So the speed of FLAC decoding is the problem, not
the amount of memory in use. We more than likely need to look at some

When running off a USB drive plugged into the Touch you are running the
server software on the Touch as well as the player software. This takes
up a lot more memory, the result is that it can get into a very low
memory situation which can affect the performance of everything.
Anything which uses more memory can make the situation worse.

I have a fully wired network and all files, even the wav 24/96 work
great and fast. Via usb it doesn't, like I said in the previous post.
The Touch is processing all this data that's exactly the same. So my
guess is that the Touch must have the possibility to play these files
through the usbconnection too. It uses the same memory as when it's
played through the network, I assume.

John, Do you have a Touch?

There are several threads on the same topic really discussing a lot of
these point. I think you have restated many of the issues well.

In a nutshell using an external server works best. Obviously, this is
not how the Touch was designed to be positioned, but for 24/96 that
seems to work best.

OK, let me see if I have this straight, with an external server playing
24/96 files works fine, is this using wired or wireless? Does it play
fine any compression level (-0 -5 -8 etc)?

The problem occurs when playing the 24/96 file off a USB drive
connected directly to the Touch, correct?

If this is the case its fairly understandable. The builtin server takes
up a lot of memory leaving almost no free memory. My guess is that the
higher level decoding takes a larger chunk of code or larger buffers
which pushes things over the edge.

The stuttering sounds like there isn't enough memory to hold everything
in memory all at once so the memory manager swapping stuff in and out of
memory as it switches between the server and the player.

In order to get things to work better you need to cut down on the
memory used, any little bit helps. One thing that takes memory is the
sharing of the USB drive over the network. If you have turned this on,
turn it off and see if that improves things. Also things like don't run
the image viewer at the same time, don't use the spectrum analyzer or VU
meters. If the tracks have artwork you might want to try using the now
playing screen that doesn't show artwork.

If none of that helps then it looks like your options are to run with
-0 if you want to run with the builtin server, OR run off an external
server.

IF you are running off an external server (and you don't have a USB
drive plugged in) and you STILL have problems with 24/96 FLAC then we
have some more detective work to do.

I noticed that wavfiles in 24/96 don't play well when it's coming from a
usbstation attached to the Touch. It's strange noise that's coming out.

Flac level 8 is to much too. level 5 is to much. Only thing that works
is Flac level 0. Strangely enough are all these files working fine via
the local network. So the usbconnection to the Touch isn't optimal.
It's slower than the network too. I hope this is gonna be fixed.

Compress at -5. The audio is the same no matter what level is used.
File size and CPU usage are the major differences. As the file size
gets smaller the CPU needs sky rocket. -5 is a good compromise.

Also in my opinion, compressing past -5 really doesn't save enough
additional space to justify all the extra CPU processing needed.

If you are on windows you can use flac front end to have a interface.

dBpoweramp music converter, thats a good program.

And foobar2000 I supose.

and many others

For reconverting flacs and wavs i already have i use "terminal" yes a
command prompt or soundconverter (I'm on Ubuntu ) .

Ripping is another topic I of-course use FLAC for my 16/44.1 too

But as phil said they all use the same flac.exe or flac.dll in the
background.

Just try have the newest one, so you don't end up with an ancient
version.

Or why not visit the http://flac.sourceforge.net/ homepage to grab some
info.

Sound quality is exactly the same it's lossless.

However a level -0 file is slightly bigger than -8

So it's compression rate:

-0 Minimum compression
-5 default
-8 "Best"

I use -5 but I have an external server

So the file will be bigger but easier to decode.

AUDIO Quality is identical at all levels - only the file size is
different... -8 is the smallest by a tiny margin (but most CPU
intensive)

My configuration is:
Touch
XP SP3,
SBS 7.6,
all wired (because Wi-Fi is NOT a proper network)
FLAC at level -5 (because -8 eats CPU for almost no worthwhile disk
space saving).

This hasn't changed for over 12 months and has been completely stable.

I did run the Touch wireless for a while and had no problems either.
FLAC @ -8 and 24/96 is/can be an issue for the Transporter as well as
the Touch...

When you state this you should also state your specific configuration.
I don't think you are using the internal SBS on the Touch from attached
storage.

You are also not stating your FLAC compression level.

Without being specific stating it "Handles it just fine" is not helpful
because there are well known cases where it is not working well. We just
need to be specific so we can help other users and the developers
resolve any issues.

Handles it just fine. I've got over 300 24/96 albums that play

Sounds like you have a problem with your network or server machine.
If you'd like some help fixing that please give us more information
