Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
I noticed that even after a 'good' scan, every time I remounted the USB-HD, it always found 1670 new files. This was strangely close to the number of albums (1614). I then remembered that when EAC rips each disc it creates an m3u playlist in each directory (back on fullfatSBS this had doubled-up my music until I pointed the playlist folder elsewhere). Searching the USB-HD i found excatly 1670 m3u playlists, so I deleted 18 and then remounted, only 1652 'new' files. I'll go ahead and delete the balance (a playlist = album is pretty useless anyway and see if I can turn off in EAC). They don't show under playlists on tinySC anyway. My question is what impact do these 'spurious' files have? tinySC is clearly identifying them as music, so must aim to do something but then doesn't recognise that they have been scanned at the next remount. I don't know whether the presence of these files has any impact of scan performacne or resulting server performance. will report back if any noticeable changes. -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

It's still working today, but the mysqueezebox login fails again with an unknown password error. I'll live without the apps anyway as I'm frightened of ejecting the USB or I'll have another mammoth scan to look forward to. You say 30k files is a lot but, winamp handles it easily enough on a PC. If each file had 1kBytes of tags, it's still only 30Mbytes, hardly a lot to hold in internal memory these days. I think I'll avoid touching it for now and live with the slow GUI until there's a software update. btw, do the developers working on this product or the support guys actually read these forums? -- RichardLittlewood RichardLittlewood's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37668 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
I gave the internal server with a USB drive a second try. My first effort ran for 14 or 15 hours without giving progress info or ever seeming to conclude. While it played music, it was not a satisfactory effort. The external USB drive had about 46,000 songs in a variety of formats - Flac, MP3 and M4A. It is a duplicate of the music on the drive in my server. So, I just played music the old fashioned way (from the main server) for the past 10 days or so. Last night I brought home my off-premises backup drive (another duplicate of the music) to update it with the new material I've added recently. Afterward, I decided to give it a go using the Touch server. Everything seemed to be going well - I got a progress screen that gave a percentage and song count. It seemed like it was going to take about 4 1/2 hours to complete (which roughly matched the 5X multiple for how much longer the Touch server takes to scan compared to a separate server I've seen bandied about.) I went to bed last night at 80% complete and expected to see a nicely running machine this morning. Instead, I woke up to a frozen Touch (needed to hit the reboot button on the back) and an EXT3 drive that looks like it now needs to be fsck'd. There was no power outage or other problem reported by my UPS on the main computer last night. I routinely do a complete database wipe and rescan on the main Squeezeboxserver as I add music and artwork or move things around and have never had an issue. So I don't think there is anything goofy about the music folder. That's two scan failures on two different drives so far for the built-in Touch server. I've had one success with a 2GB flash drive but so far I'm not particularly impressed with the built-in server. Kind of a pity that after a four month release delay to fix these problems, people still seem to having issues. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
I removed about 5 GByte of non-music files from the USB (~220G in a 320G drive used now). I then did another factory reset because the player had lost mysqueezebox.com password and there appears to be no way of entering it except after a factory reset. After doing the welcome wizard I mounted the USB drive and started a scan. After 4 hours or so it stopped the server with the usual warning "SBT has stopped due to a problem" (really informative that one). I then restarted the server and it continued scanning (it still is acording to the server status actually). I see the memory is 67% full under advanced/diagnostics. However, now everything is working well. I have my 3k file library all available with albumart and I am logged into mysqueezebox. Lets see how long it lasts. I think this proves that the problems are more software related than hardware. If it works well intermitently then it could always work if they just fix the damn bugs. -- RichardLittlewood RichardLittlewood's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37668 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Is it happening with FLAC files? A number of people have gotten around the problem by re-encoding using level -0 compression. If scanning is still going on when trying to play music all bets are off. In addition any animated visualizers can take up CPU time (spectrum analyzer, VU meters, picture viewer). When the server is running the processor has to handle both the server side and the player side so anything else going on can cause problems. If you have the drive shared try unsharing it, samba takes up some memory and cycles. > can't connect to mySB for MyApps or App Gallery whilst playing from > tinySC That one I don't have a solution for. It works fine for me. There are log files on the Touch which are frequently useful in debugging this sort of thing. You have to ssh into the Touch and then you can read the log files. If there are errors making connections you might find pertinent info in the logs. > tinySC doesn't scrobble to last.fm I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with large libraries, etc. I don't do scrobbling so I've never tried it. > I suspect that the former may be incurred by outstanding scan > issues/background processes caused by a 'bad' scan/remount which may > have been caused by library size. > > Is there any reason library size should affect the other two issues. > > In terms of large, does non-music on the USB have any impact? > (discovering files seems to go to 60,000 which I guess includes all > non-music) I don't think so. At one point I connected a drive which had 2 million files, most of which were NOT audio files. There was about 10gigs of audio files in various locations on the disk. It handled it perfectly, found the audio files and ignored the rest. > Also, is large defined purely by number of files or does type of file > and length of track (i.e. size of file) also impact? I THINK its probably number of songs not size of file thats an issue. I have a disk which has about 100 songs on it but each "song" is 2 gig in size (they are raw concert recordings), this scans very quickly. Just a few thoughts on scanning in general, which you probably already know but here goes anyway. The scan stores data in the .Squeezebox dir on the disk. If there is an existing one from an external server or if there is a partial one from a scan which did not complete, its a good idea to delete it before starting the scan. I've seen the scanner do weird things when it couldn't correctly read the database. Turn off sharing, this leaves a little more memory which might help. Don't plug in an SD card. Don't do anything else while scanning, don't touch the screen, don't display pictures, nothing. The sequence I have found that gives the best chance of success is to disconnect the drive, unplug the power on the Touch. Plug the drive into another computer and delete .Squeezebox directory. Plug power into the Touch, let it sit for a couple minutes so all startup and initialization precesses have finished. Plug in the drive. When it comes up with the message about using the eject button go ahead and select the item for viewing the scan progress. After this don't touch the Touch until its done or you are really sure its hung. When done eject the drive, unplug drive, unplug power. Plug in power, wait a couple minutes, plug in drive, wait for (hopefully much shorter) rescan. At this point you should be good to go for playing music. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
There are no hard and fast rules. Its not a number in the software that after its reached stuff doesn't work. There seems to be a gradual degradation in performance (initial scan time, remount scan time, GUI responsiveness etc) as the database gets larger. Exactly where things start to get really bad seems to be very individual setup dependant. Several beta testers are running large libraries on big disks and its working fine for them. Others (such as those posting here in this thread) are having major problems. Unfortunately right now nobody knows what the differences are. I don't think anybody can say right now "If you do this its guaranteed to work" and "if you do this its guaranteed not to work". Its going to take some more experience to find out what parameters affect it and how to optimize a large library running on the builtin server. For now if you are having major difficulties there are a couple options: spend more time trying to find out what you can do that will improve things with the current setup, give up in disgust and return it, or go to an external server. It doesn't have to be very expensive, the Sheevaplug costs $99 and can be used with the USB drive you already have. I think most people are going to prefer the experience with the external server, you have the full capabilities of the server at your disposal, which are probably even more important for people with large collections. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
Hey, you're not alone.I've got a big library of 250 Gbytes, and had numerous issues getting my new Squeezebox touch to work properly. My main problem was that when scanning for files, after about 4 hours of scanning the HDD, some time after starting to scan album art, the squeezebox stops with an error "music server stopped due to a problem". I tried 4 different models of USB HDD (including a powered one) and I bought a USB powered hub in case the unpowered USB HDDs couldn't supply sufficient current without luck. Some issues I had along the way included: 1) USB connection dropped repeatedly. 2) When I navigate to a file and try to play it I get an error "Problem can not open file for:" 3) GUI freezes or is unuseably slow 4) Server needs restarting 5) Impossible to browse by tags because every time you enter a menu such as "Artists" It takes forever to populate the entries. That would be OK if it remembered them, but as soon as you exit that menu and re-enter it does the same thing again. 6) Squeezebox hangs saying it is scanning but it's not, the HDD isn't even spinning. Eventually after several scans, wipe and rescans and factory resets, I got it to scan everything although albumart is missing (which was working at one point), I can't log into the squeezebox server (which was working) and the device is permanently scanning for new files (which I guess is making the GUI so slow).Wouldn't it make more sense to be able to manually control the file scanning and choose the directories. I have other stuff on my HDD I don't want scanned. I also tried to point the picture viewer at a picasa album embedded URL and that failed too. I've put mine into standby, played lots of tracks and even removed the USB drive (the wrong way, oops). The Touch has still performed flawlessly. -- Mr_Sukebe SB Touch, Meridian 568.2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent system, audio-technica and Zanash cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
mine also 'hung' showing 'scanning media for music files. please wait ...' but not progressing. I eventually got it to scan through a combination of 'stop server', 'eject USB' and putting Touch into standby (I haven't used the factory reset). I powered it down overnight (eject USB first) ad today it recognises/remembers all teh files on the USB drive but setting/advanced/squeezebox_server still shows 'scanning media for music files. please wait...' setting/advanaced/squeezebox_information shows 'rescanning music library...' where it shows "Library Information" when done. Drilling in shows 'empty'. Mr-Sukebe and tank121, what do you see now and have you put Touch into Standby or powered off since the successful scan? -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio (Touch ordered) controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
I used the factory reset option, restarted it, then setup to scan my USB HDD. Worked a treat. Scanned the whole lot in 25 mins, then played everything with zero issues. Mine too seemed to stop the first time it was doing the scan. Powered down and restarted and all tracks, album art etc scanned successfully. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
All I'm getting as a message is that the Squeezecentre server is scanning my music files. There's no info about the number of tracks to be scanned or how long. One other weird thing. I've had a quick listen, and err, well that's all I'm getting. It'll play around 30 seconds, then repeat back from the start of the track. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
go to settings/advanced/squeezebox server which should give you a progress report. I think it will be slower if you are playing music whilst it scans but see my post as I think I crashed mine byinstalling an applet (which always reboots Squeezeplay devices like teh touch) mid-scan. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=533775#post533775 -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio (Touch ordered) controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
Got my SB Touch today (my thanks Logitech) and very nice it looks too. At the moment, I believe it's scanning the attached USB drive (which will be used as it's music source). I've got roughly 1100 CDs cut onto the HD and was wondering how I check progress of the scan whilst it's running? Any thoughts? I have read elsewhere that it can take roughly 5 times longer than it would on a PC. Last time I did a scan on my PC, it took roughly 45 mins, so should I be expecting a scan to take 3 hours? Lastly, if I switch to another music source (e.g. my PC), then go back to the USB HDD, will I need to re-scan it? -- Mr_Sukebe SB3, Meridian 568.2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent system, audio-technica and Zanash cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
