Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Local music service has been stopped due to a problem

2011-07-02 Thread karlinamillion

I have had the same problem with my SB touch with an SD card.
It was all down to having the write enable slider on the side of the SD
card set to 'read only' ie SB touch could not write to the SD card,
which stuffed everything up.

Phew! that was easy (for me anyway)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Local music service has been stopped due to a problem

2010-12-13 Thread pumabr

Recently I also had this problem with my Squeezebox Touch (SBT). I
thought that will be helpful to share here my experience with this
problem.
I have the SBT connected to a 3.5" external 500GB HDD formatted in
FAT32 with 'this'
(http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm) program,
because Windows only allows formatting in FAT32 drives with up to
32GB.
Initially I thought that this error happened because I have over 32GB
of music recorded in this HDD. I followed the advice given in this
forum about the album art, and I did more yet: I removed all the
images. The problem remained. I formatted the disk to NTFS with
Windows, and the problem remained the same. After that I only added to
the disk 30GB music, in which case the scanning went smoothly. I was
adding a few more albums at a time, until a specific album give me the
error again. I removed that album and replaced by another, the error
left to give! I ended up add all the missing albums, I ran the scan,
and had no problem! Conclusion: the problem of this error, at least to
me, was due to some MP3 files that were encoded in some strange way for
the SBT. I converted these files again, I added them to the HDD and the
scan went smoothly. Therefore, this error can also be due to corrupted
music files. Here is the info!

John...I can't confirm whether or not your tip did the trick, but I'm
going to give you credit for it anyway! I deleted the "squeezebox.db"
files that were on my hard drive as you suggested before I tried
another scan and it worked this time. I also did a soft reset of the
Touch before the scan using the reset button on the back of the unit.

Thanks again John and thanks to everyobdy else who offered their
support for my problem...I am now happily enjoying my Touch!!

The scan builds a database of information about the music files, which
can come from the tags or directory structure (or both). This is used
for searching and sorting your library based on said track information.
Without the DB the only thing you can do is access the music by filename
(the music folder option).

It also does stuff with your cover art, making it usable by the player.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Local music service has been stopped due to a problem

2010-04-15 Thread DigitalMitch

KJAM,

the continual rescanning has been driven by several reasons.
1) I had to tweak delete a load of duplicates (my USB harddrive is
acting as family backup so have sister and GF's music on it, which
overlaps). If I could have pointed at a file within USB this may have
been avoided
2) I was then fixing the tags on the non-dupe's in their libraries.
3) Then I powered it all off overnight
4) Then I have switched it off numerous times to try and get it to
behave!

I finished tweaking the files early this morning and this afternoon it
seems to have settled down - we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Note, since mine are embedded in FLAC they maybe handled differently ?

Thanks for the info...I did the same thing you did by searching for
jpg. files. I could not figure out though how to resize them all at
once...I had to do most of them individually. What's the trick for
reducing them all in one shot?

I'm starting to think this is not my problem though, seeing that you
only reduced your files that were over 400kb and you have 1600 files. I
only have 625 files and all are under 400kb. What size are your files?

Hi Mate
I've got around 1500 Albums on this drive in Flac format so there
would be around 1600 covers (Taking into account double cd's 1 in each
folder)
I just connected the drive to my laptop & searched for jpeg files over
400KB & if you haven't tried it yet plug the drive in to external power.

Michael,

are my logs of any use to you? are they even the right things, as they
don;t match the embedded names?

I seem to be shifting from one problem to another.

Reduced to just Touch and switched off old WHS server. Tracks keep
stalling and then restarting after a delay. Applies to both .m4a and
FLAC.

Latest logs reflecting this attached

Michael...thanks for your response!

Can you please explain how to "not run the ImageViewer". I'm not sure
how to do this. Will this allow me to succesfully scan the drive and
if so will I still be able to view album art when complete?

Also, can you please explain how to upload my message log file. I have
never done this before.

Thanks!

I was having the same problem...I was getting the error when 25% of the
way through scanning the album art files. I re-sized all large album
art files to below 300kb. I had some files that were as big as 6MB.
When I re-scanned the drive I still got the same error but was able to
make it through 85% of my album art scan this time. At this point I'm
really not if that is the problem or not? Should I try reducing the
files sizes even more? I only have 625 album art files and the largest
is 300kb with many being under 100kb. I would be suprised if the touch
can't handle that.

Not sure how the problems relate (if at all) and sorry if cross-posting
is confusing (trying to keep to one issue in one thread but have too
many issues at once).

Unfortunately the 'message' log only seems to track from restart!!

Interestingly the 'new' log files have no modified date

After Touch restart and the message about sending the data to you (i
choose Yes, Always), I didn't get a 'server starting' message nor the
warning about ejecting USB devices (which prompts me to choose
'Squeezebox Server' to watch scan progress. So I choose some music on
the Touch first, which is now playing well but...
the Touch scanner is 'hung' at "scanning media for music files, please
wait..." for over fifteen minutes (10 with music playing and 5 after
end of album).

stuttered), stepped out and came back to silence.

This time there are two Message files.

Slight progress.

The mapped drive was to media-sda1 on Squeezebox Touch -
squeezeboxtouch (Squeezeboxtouch) but there is also

logs on Squeezebox Touch - squeezeboxtouch (Squeezeboxtouch)

that contains "cores/nmbd","cores/smbd" and "watchdog" which are empty
and 7 files
("log.main_pc","log.smbd","log.nmbd","log.0.0.0.0","log.192.168.2.17","wtmp"
and "messages").

I've attached "messages" as it is the largest and looks like a
logfile.

However by the time I got to this point I am seeing slightly different
problems from OP:- I am trying to use STS to stream FLAC synchronised
to itself, a Receiver and a Radio.

The sync is correct but frequently interrupted (rebuffering) and
sometimes stops (but switching Touch in and out of standby seems to
restart it). At 9:37 I had message "problem connecting to Squeezebox
Touch Server" (may not have got wording spot on) on the Touch itself.

Not sure if this is useful to you.

2010-04-15 Thread DigitalMitch

Hi Michael,

I'm struggling to find any logfile (or information on how to find it,
searhced wiki and forums).

Share is on and I can see the contents of the USB drive connected to
the Touch.

There is a T:\.squeezebox\cache folder which only seems to contain 2
database files: "artwork cache", "squeezebox" and
"squeezebox-persistent".

The Touch {Settings/Advanced/Squeezbox Information/Squeezbox Server Log
File/ } shows both server and scanner logs are "syslog". I've searched
the whole T: drive for this but can't find it.

The Touch also shows in {Settings/Advanced/Squeezbox
Information/Folders/ } folders under /etc/squeezecenter/ which are
"cache", "prefs" & "Cache/Install" which I can't find either.

any help appreciated.

I have display hidden files and subdirectories on.

have the message "Analysis in progress, please wait", and nothing else
happen...
Is there something that I missed, or any explanation to this problem ?
I have tried to factory reset the unit without any change.
Thanks for your help.

How much RAM does Touch have? I have no problems with some >2MB
image files with Squeezebox Server (version 7.4.2 anyway) running
on a WinXP box.

Aha! I have had a problem when the database file on the drive is from a
different server version. If you had previously used the same drive with
an external SBS the .squeezebox.db (I think thats the name, make sure )
file may be in a different format. The filename starts with a "." which
makes it a hidden file in some operating systems so it may be hard to
see. If you have one of these already on the disk you may want to try
either deleting it or changing the name to something else and see if
the scan works better.

If you want to swap the same drive back and forth between the Touch and
an external server its probably a good idea to make sure they are both
running the same server version.

Great thought, but this is the same exact external USB drive that I
have been using with my computer and Squeezebox Server with no scanning
issues ever. I guess I'll just have to start digging around in my drive
until I can find that large file...hopefully there is only one!!

Thanks for the tip...I will try and find the large file that might be
causing the problem. I'm not sure what the best way to do this is
though?

"Local music service has been stopped due to a problem" usually means
that the system ran out of memory. The most likely cause for out of
memory errors is during the artwork scan, when a very large image is
encountered. Future versions will refuse to resize very large images
but for now this is a problem. So you should look for large high-res
images as either cover.jpg files or embedded tags. By large I'm
talking over 1MB in size.

This may or may not be practical in your case,
but one way to diagnose the issue is to hook up
your drive to a computer with squeezebox server installed,
and let it scan the same directory of music files. If it fails
there you can then read out from the diagnostics exactly
which file(s) it's having trouble with.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Local music service has been stopped due to a problem

2010-04-14 Thread KJAM

The results of my "Wipe/Re-scan" did not go much better. The scan
stopped again in almost the excact same spot. It made it all the way
through the music scan (20,000 files)and then stopped about 25% of the
way through the album art scan (600 files). So is there a problem with
one of the album art files? Any ideas of how to get around this issue?

Thanks!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Local music service has been stopped due to a problem

2010-04-14 Thread DigitalMitch

I have had some similar problems (also with a Smasung Story Station -
1.5T)/
more often it hangs on searching media formusic files.

However I have managed to scan in 25000 music files, from some 60,000
files on the drive.

My current inclinations are:-
whilst scanning, do nothing else!
don't share the USB drive (and start tidying it up)
don't play music
don't load new applets
don't search for music

Some of these maybe overkill but suggest that you let at least one scan
succeed before any messing (which is hard with a new toy!!)

I have also found that stopping and starting the server doesn't always
give a clean start and therefore I

1) stop server
2) eject USB drive
3) power off USB drive
4) power on USB drive, which is then detected, restarts server and
initiates scan.

not 100% but good luck.

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for what could be causing the
problems you're seeing. I have only experimented a little with the
built-in SBS, and that with a small subset of my library on a 16GB USB
flash drive, and that has been working fine. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply...glad to know it's probably not the non-music
files messing things up. Any other thoughts on what the problem could
be?

I am currently trying to re-scan again, but this time by using the
"Wipe/Re-scan" command. I am 50% through the scan so far with no
issues. Hopefully it will work this time!

At present there is no way to specify a music folder on the attached
storage when using the Touch's built-in SBS. It scans the entire drive,
but there is no reason that non-music files should prevent the scan from
completing.

FYI, you can still choose a folder to be scanned in SBS 7.5.0 if you
run it on a computer, just like "the old Squeeze Server". It's only the
Touch's built-in SBS (aka TinySBS) that doesn't have this option.

I just received my Touch and I am trying to scan the files on my USB
hard drive but getting the same error you are. I have tried it several
times and the same error message is displayed. The first try was my
best and I got all the way to scanning my album art before it stopped.

I was also wondering if it had anything to do with the other non-music
files on the hard drive. Does anybody know if there is a way to specify
which folder on the hard drive is scanned? On the old Squeeze Server you
had to choose a folder to be scanned it did not just scan your whole
hard drive.
