Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Volume questions
As Mnyb suggests, iTunes is not considered an accurate ripper. EAC or dbPowerAmp would be much better ripping programs to use, among others. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85213 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Volume questions
To turn off volume adjustment: Use squeezeboxservers web-UI go to settings and then the player setting tab . choose the rigth player and then audio settings And then find "Volume Adjustment/Replay Gain" set it to No volume adjustment The iTunes it uses "soundcheck" and squeezeboxserver uses that info to. But I hope it does go away if you turn off Volume Adjustment . Maybe turning off soundcheck in iTunes too ? When ripping to iTunes do set it to use Apple lossles instead of AAC or mp3, so you get the same quality as your CD's -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe' Primare and Dynadio speakers, Contour 4 Contour Center, and Contour 1.3SE rear ch. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Volume questions
Aha the DAC . You should compare using the DAC , Touch also has digital out's both optical and coaxial and all Touch's outputs are active at the same time, so you just move the cable and you are done. The bryston BDA-1 DAC for example Output Level - 2.3V unbalanced - 4.6V balanced So if you are using it balanced it is significantly louder and unbalanced a tiny bit louder. But most current bryston integrated amps only neds 0,775 volts for full power so you can drive your amp to clipping levels with the Touch -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe' Primare and Dynadio speakers, Contour 4 Contour Center, and Contour 1.3SE rear ch. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Volume questions
Thanks for you replies. I am using Itunes and comparing a CD with a rip of the same CD. The CD is played using a rotel CDP as a transport and is send to Bryston DAC, the touch is sending analog signal to bryston integrated amp. I realize using the digitial out on the CD player vs the analog out on the touch could account for some of the differences. Is it normal to have the touch volume set at 100 on the touch? Are there any other settings on the touch or itunes that i should check to make sure they are not set incorrectly? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Volume questions
I would not be worried by that most thing are to loud anyway (to much gain). Amps sound better when you use the volume control not only the first 25% of it for normal listening. Touch outputs ~2v rms wich is quite normal ? what CDP do you use. Compare them at the same input . You are not using the phono input I hope. However there is a couple of things that can make things sound at lover volume. Replay Gain Tags and if you have "volume adjustment" on in the player settings. Then things get -10dB quieter approximately, that's a lot. Also what kind of files are you listening to , you can only do a fair comparison with a rip of the same CD , web radio channels can have any kind of level usually louder but sometimes quieter. And rip to a lossles format I suggest flac. Btw some mp3 encoders and cd rip application have options to "normalize" the sound never do that, they you would end up with a compromised rip and it will also sound lover in most cases. If you want to use gain adjustment use RG tags do not fiddle with the audio to achieve that. Replay gain is just tags with info, the associated function can be turned on and off as needed the itself audio unmolested. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe' Primare and Dynadio speakers, Contour 4 Contour Center, and Contour 1.3SE rear ch. What you describe, however seems like quite a big difference. Squeezeboxes should be pretty much comparable to CD players when at 100% .. What files are you playing? Where are they from? Do you have replaygain enabled? That lowers the volume significantly. Is the comparison done with the Touch and CD player on the same input on your amp? -Skinny -- Skinny This sentence says less than a list of audio equipment.
