I had one. And I was so impressed that I could actually carry a
computer around that was such a small size. ;-)

In my loft, in good working order when I put it there aeons ago, I have
what was called a 'portable' by Compaq, the maker but was referred to
as 'luggable' by the poor souls like me that had to take it around with
them. It had one (or two, I can't remember) 5" floppy drives, a keyboard
that acted as a base when being moved, and a little monochrome green CRT
screen. Probably qualifies for antique status now.
Cheers,

Not only do I have some 8" floppies around here I even have an 8" drive,
but nothing I can plug it into. The computer that drive came out of died
a long time ago. I think the drive still actually works, but I can't try
it out.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Haven't had this much fun since . . .

What if the "cloud" only included the crappy remixes/re-recordings that
I find on Amazon sometimes? What really sucks is that you can't listen
to the entire track to discern if this is truly the version you are
looking for. Usually your only line of defense is to read user reviews
of albums to see if they are crying "foul" over the integrity of the
songs on the CD/MP3 album/whatever. Of course not every album is going
to have user reviews...I've been there.

Also, as someone pointed out, who wants to be stuck buying or
downloading overly-compressed music? I only use Amazon for
hard-to-find single tracks, usually for compilation albums that I
create on my external HDDs. I gladly use HD Tracks when something I
really want pops up in their catalog.

Alas, the popularity of the MP3 has made that a less than viable
alternative most of the time.

Returning to Guido F's original post; indeed, the Touch has been a
revelation. I used to have all of my CD booklets packed into three
extremely heavy CD folders. All were in alphabetical order, and were
numbered by disc. While this made it easier to pick CDs from my 300
disc player, grabbing my iPod Touch and loading iPeng makes it pretty
much the ideal way to listen to music.

It looks like you can't accept any other opinion but your own. As soon

OK, so I record a track with my band, mix it down, and master it as a
FLAC file. I make a safety backup copy (make that four or five copies,
one burnt on a CD, another one burnt on a DVD, another one stored on
the external hard drive at home, the other one on an external hard
drive in the office, etc.), and also store my backup of that FLAC file

corrupt government or some fucked up terrorists, give a shit about the
inane little files that we create and store somewhere. And if the

On the other hand, cloud storage as an extra layer of backup in
addition to personal backups may have its role, if not too expensive.

In this day and age, computing has turned into commodity (similar to
how electric power and indoor plumbing have become a commodity,
something we all take as given and simply continue paying monthly
charges for using these commodities). The prices are eroding left,
right and centre. And they're continuing to erode. The prices of
Amazon's services have been on a constant down slide, and the trend
will not only continue, it will accelerate.

I predict that, in not too distant future, it will be financially
feasible for common households to store the backup of their precious
digital media in the cloud, with a reputable vendor (or, with a select
few reputable vendors).

You get what you pay for, as usual. Even S3 has different term of
services depending on price, so it has nothing to do with how big the
business is. However, the casual user won't be paying for s3 and its
strong guarantees, but will gravitate towards the free or almost free
services which clearly won't have the same guarantees.

I disagree. Amazon is a big business, and they can't afford to be lax
with losing client's data. Read their S3 service level agreement -- it
is rock solid.

I never lost data on my set of HDD, but I'm careful (RAID + rsync). On
the other hand, "the cloud" (a very popular photo sharing site) has
already lost some of my data, and calling them was totally useless (we
will check the backup), fortunately it was still on my HDD.

There are also stories of people loosing e-mail. I believe those
incidents are under-reported, because most people don't even have the
tools to realise data loss unless it's totally catastrophic. If one of
your unpopular album would be missing from your collection, I bet most
people would blame themselves.

If you check, you will realise that the "cloud" makes absolutely no
promises about the safety and reliability of the storage of your data.
It's all about convenience.

Hi Rick:

Thanks for the additional information.

The evidence seems to be that this is just, as you put it, a "cosmetic"
issue.

On 24/96 material, the Touch's digital output sounds better than
anything I heard on my system. Even on 16/44.1, it tends to improve
over the sound of CDs played on the CA 840C.

rates depending on the disc. Some have copy protection (I think most
commercial DVDs and DVD-As) where it is limited. The one case where I
saw 24/96 was with one I got from a friend of his own recordings,

I have seen everything from ("<=" sometimes) 20/96, 24/48, 16/96, and
even 16/192 out of the Oppo on various discs.

Anyway, http://support.cambridgeaudio.com/faqs_view.php?FAQID=163
discusses the 840C (which supposedly only displays what the device
'reports') and
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16641 is about the Touch
'bug'.

Doesn't sound like Logitech is going to put any effort into fixing it,
since it's "only cosmetic". Oh well.

I think we can be assured that the Touch is actually putting out 24/96
(or whatever is being streamed, if less). Stereophile and Computer
Audiophile have both published measurements verifying the 24 bit output
on the SPDIF optical/RCA connections.

Hi Rick:

I'm hooked up wireless.

Yes, my CA 840C also displays "<=20/96" when streaming 24/96 files from
my Touch.

But when streaming a 24/96 DVD Audio played on my Oppo, the 840C reads
<24/48!

The 840C manual states somewhat cryptically that "rather than exact
word width, some sources report data as either 20 bit maximum . . . or
24 bit maximum."

Looks like the 840C display is not accurate in either case.

should listen to the CD and do a comparison ... nah! sounds great thru
the Touch (wireless streaming and all), why bother?

BTW, Guido, wondering what is displayed on your 840C when playing thru
the Touch? and if you are going wireless or using Ethernet? (altho I
don't think it would make a difference in what the 840C displays).

Mine shows "<=20/96" even when streaming 24/96 files, and "<=20/44.1"
when streaming CD-sourced (Apple lossless) files. There is an issue
with the 840C and 'status bits' sent from the source ...

When connected to my Oppo 980H the same files (burned to and played on
a DVD) read "24/96".

Absolutely, and that's the only way to go about it. Just because you
rip your CDs to your hard drive, doesn't mean that you should now toss
the CDs on a bon fire.

The prudent way is not to put all one's eggs in only one basket. Right
now, I have my music stored on the original CDs, on my computer, on 4
external hard drives (2 at home, 2 in the office), plus some music in
the cloud as well (Amazon, DropBox, and some other services).

The odds that all these multiple copies will one day disappear at the
same time in a puff of smoke are astronomically minimal.

I like Amazon, too, but they are still a big corporation and big
corporations (as well as governments) do flaky things from time to
time. Remember the George Orwell "1984" incident about a year & a half
ago? Amazon found they sold a Kindle edition of the book they shouldn't
have and they went out and literally erased everyone's copy. That made a
real big stink, and certainly there was no little irony due to the book
involved.

Like noted above, I'd probably use a personal cloud if the concept
takes off, but you'd still have a hard time prying my fingers off my
local copies.

By 'in the cloud' I meant more like your own private portion of the
'cloud'. For example, I have an Amazon S3 account, which allows me to
store my digital media on my private 'cloud' and stream it anywhere in
the world. So I don't care whether that content is available publicly
or not (as in on Netflix); this is my content, the one I've obtained

I'd point out that if the cloud truly takes shape as some envision,
it'll be there whether I consent or not, and it'll be there whether I
hang onto my own collection or not.

I certainly don't mind "them" putting the cloud out there. If it were
present, I'd probably use it to some degree, just as I enjoy watching
films through my Roku player.

Actually that's a pretty good example. There are some very interesting
things to watch via the Roku, but there is a mountain of material that
isn't likely to be available anytime soon. On Saturday we watched a BBC
"Mrs. Bradley" episode with Diana Rigg via Amazon/Roku. Of the 5
episodes created, only one is available streamed. Why? I can only
guess, but I'd suspect it is one of the reasons mentioned earlier.

After watching the Grammy Awards last night, it became apparent that I
need not worry about what happens to the music being recorded these
days. It's all pointless drivel, so why bother?

The music I'm really interested in listening to is readily available in
a digitized format. The issue now becomes one of convenience: am I going
to access that material by thumbing through the pile of poorly organized
physical discs (only to realize an hour later that I've borrowed that
particular CD I was looking for to a friend), or am I going to dial the
music I'm interested in on my iPhone and then stream it to my main audio
system?

If the latter, the question becomes: am I going to keep that digitized
music on my crash-prone HD, or in the cloud?

I don't know... I'm inherently suspicious of leaving my collection
completely in the hands of others. It sounds nice if you say it fast,
but consider the following examples.

Remember the abomination of colorized B&W movies? I'm sure they thought
they were doing us a great favor. It was very hard to find an original
version during this period.

What happens when the only version in the cloud of your favorite song
is the over-compressed remixed loudness wars casualty?

Copyright holders are notorious about changing their minds. Someone
only needs to wake up on the wrong side of the bed one morning and
you'll find material from a favorite artist gone. I can remember a
period when the great Marx Bros. comedies were virtually non-existent.
My wife - a Jimmy Spheeris fan - saw his stuff disappear for a period
due to copyright issues. At one point used CDs were around $100 a pop.
Even today the out-of-print "The Dragon Is Dancing" CD is $40 used as
the price came down since you can download the album if an MP3 is
acceptable.

I just finished the book "The Master Switch" by Tim Wu which looks at
the history of technology and communications starting with the
telegraph. Consistently for the past 150 years, things have repeatedly
cycled toward monopoly control with others deciding what we should
hear/see and when.

I think I'll hang onto my stuff for a while longer ;-)

No offense taken.

Some of us oldies have been with the Internet since the days of the
ARPA Network and welcome "the cloud" in the audio world if it means
better sound for less money and clutter.

"Old" is a relative term. I feel fairly young next to my mother, who is
almost 84.

I started my record collecting in the mid 1960s. In the late 1960s I
acquired an open reel and ended up with more than a few original items
on tape along with some copies of studio masters. In those cases, you
either convert or lose them.

I found the process rather enjoyable overall, plus it was always
exciting to rediscover a lost gem.
