I had the same problem mentioned in this thread : I had xfce4 installed, but
the default DM would not launch it, just pause for a second and then prompt
me again for my login / password. Also the Window Managers list was populated
with seemingly absent WMs, like Gnome/openbox (I'm using a fresh

Magic Banana's post helped me to test that XFCE was indeed working.

And Alizee's one allowed me to solve the problem altogether.

Thanks!

I had written to Intel to confirm this information before you posted this

I got my information from Wikipedia, as well as looking at the Intel website.
I should have spent more time on the Intel website!

I appreciate the information!

Unity 2D can be installed standalone and the user wouldn't be forced to have
potentially non free video drivers. That is why the push for the
trisquel-unity package would stick.to the 2D version only with the necessary
theme tweaks.

in mind this would reduce the funds received a little as it gets 'taxed'

It takes time to implement these little features though. If you can look
into it though and summarise it on the http://pledgie.com/site/about I
think we could probably implement this fairly easy.

I've been extremely busy the last few days. If it wasn't for the fact it
is costly to add people to the payroll I'd have more time to do little

another person to help with US shipping operations. It's also partly a
time factor. I have to investigate the options.

Just managing things is a full time job and something I don't mind
doing- except it requires money as other people generally don't want to
work for free. And those which do are inconsistent/unreliable
(understandably so of course).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Open-pc.com - for hardware that runs on free software

2012-06-29 Thread chris
I'm not sure what you meant by this although the Open-PC and Penguin Wee
are/were identical hardware wise. The only difference is in the
software/branding of the unit.

The original Penguin Wee/OpenPC should run Trisquel great. If you ordered it
with 1GB it might not be sufficient for the latest version. I'm guessing that
is what your gripe is. Upgrading the ram would be a good idea. We usually
recommend more ram to people unless they are trying to cut corners and also
sticking with an older LTS release. I would not advise less than 2GB for the
current version of Trisquel and even then 2GB only if one is going to stick
with the 6 release once it comes out for the next 3 years.

The new Penguin Wee / HTPC is nice. It supports HD video and is much faster.
The original Penguin Wee though has some nice qualities about it too.
Especially if you are just looking to use it for web browsing, email, word
processing, etc. The new version is a super charged Penguin Wee and probably
overkill for the majority. Most of the people buying them are not at all tech
savvy. They are just looking for something simple to send emails, browse the
web, and maybe do a little typing (think snail mail letters). The original
also is a really great system for learning GNU/Linux because of the price
point. It works perfectly without the need to deal with proprietary software
thus allowing one to really get into the software.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Open-pc.com - for hardware that runs on free software

2012-06-29 Thread chris
The OpenPC project was a failure. There were major issues that could have
been resolved. The idea was to basically put out a free PC. We already had
that. At least to the extent it ran free software (distribution like
Trisquel). In fact it was more of a backward motion as it used OpenSuSE.
OpenPC is really just a branded version of OpenSuSE with a few tweaks. It
looked REALLY cool. BUT the problems were this:

1. Multiple announcements prior to the availability of the system(s). We
weren't the only ones shipping an "OpenPC". It should have really been one
system that had shipping from multiple continents. Then there were no
announcements after it was released. It needed promotion that it never got.

2. It wasn't completely free (not from the free software perspective at
least). The wording used to describe it was all wrong. "Open" is a bad word.
I don't believe it actually contained non-free software as the OpenSuSE
developer(s) are active in removing non-free firmware/drivers. However I
think it's web site contains information on installing non-free software.
That makes it a no-go in this community.

3. We already had a system with chipsets made it free software compatible
(again, it's not free BIOS, X86 is never going to be 100% free even with a
free BIOS) and was selling great.

4. There was an article written by someone who didn't get the facts. This was
several months after the initial availability. They managed to find our web
site and made up stuff for the article. Never were we contacted. They claimed
for instance the US version of the OpenPC shipped with Ubuntu. It did not.
Ubuntu is not free. The OpenPC version of OpenSuSE was at least not shipping
non-free software for the most part (again- it isn't quite Trisquel free
though). We did not ship Ubuntu with the OpenPC version which was linked from
the OpenPC web site. There was an entirely different page for it. There still
is. We did also ship a version with Ubuntu though. The system is still
available with OpenPC. I would not recommend it. I'm doubtful the software is
being maintained. It's a very old effort now and it's probably based on an
unsupported version of OpenSuSE. It's not possible to find it our on web site
directly.

All in all we are basically doing what the OpenPC project attempted to
accomplish. A PC built for free software users. Non-free software is a
hindrance to free software users and that was what the project was trying to
solve. The translation / English of those running it wasn't great. I never
was really sure if they understood the problem(s) even though I attempted to
explain it. It wasn't my place and the project was basically done when we got
involved. We just gave them a new means to distribute a product in a region
they otherwise could not. They already had completed development on it
(software wise).

Chris, I was chatting with somebody at #fsf, and they said to totally avoid
Intel, due to their integrating DRM into their CPUs and other freedom hostile
things...

He said go with AMD and use Nouveau drivers for an nVidia car. His other
option was not getting a new computer at all and donating the money to free
software development instead!

Ruling out both AMD and Intel would make it almost impossible to find a CPU
maker!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Open-pc.com - for hardware that runs on free software

2012-06-29 Thread chris
I'm pretty confident in saying this is wrong. The laptops are old and I'm
positive I've looked. You can't even find them on the major auction site(s).
You need a very specific version of the Lenovo model. It's also not
compatible with free software for other reasons (graphics and wifi I
believe).

The machine RMS has is also not available any more. The new version is not
free software friendly. It's got a non-free software dependent graphics
chipset.

As far as desktops go it's mostly boards that are no longer being
manufactured so they are impossible to get (just about). You will pay a
significant premium for them if you can get one (you probably can with a
little bit of effort).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Silverlight \ Moonlight \ Plugin \ WORK?

2012-06-29 Thread chris
I can't help although I'll say this. Silverlight and Moonlight are not
something the free software community support. Moonlight was never terribly
well supported and Silverlight has digital restrictions. Moonlight is now
defunct I believe anyway. Silverlgiht never took off either. Microsoft has
abandoned it. There are two or three major sites that use it. One being a
sports site or two (NFL site - major thing in the USA; American Football) and
Netflix.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel release numbering

2012-06-29 Thread chris
Sticking with Ubuntu's numbering might imply to some people who don't know
about Trisquel that it's another Ubuntu clone of sorts. Maybe the trade off
is worth it. Maybe not. Trisquel is not just swapping out default programs.
It's replacing core pieces that negatively impact users freedom.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel & Trusted Computing

2012-06-29 Thread chris
You are looking at it from the wrong angle I think. While the libre-kernel
should really have this disabled in the software too the hardware is what you
should be concerned about. At least at the moment you can avoid the Intel
CPUs with support for "Trusted Computing". We stopped shipping laptops with
it months(?) ago. You have to check the processor on the Intel web site to
find out if it has this featured. I forget what it is called exactly although
you can spot it in the specs.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Free Software and 3D Graphics: nVida, AMD/Radeon or Integrated Graphics?

2012-06-29 Thread chris
I communicated a while back with various developers working on graphics
drivers & distributions to the source for gaming/video testing and review.
The conclusion of it all. The 9500 series is the way to go. Between
stability, features, performance and price. I would not recommend it though
over a new system with Intel graphics. The low end nVidia is comparable to
the newer Intel graphics chipsets and in a number of areas better.

Here is the graphics card we are shipping:

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/geforce-9500gt-1gb-pci-express-20-video-card-gnulinux

Note: 512MB is all you really need. For business reasons we are shipping the
1GB version (the price difference is minuscule to non-existent).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Next Trisquel LTS

2012-06-29 Thread chris
Unity is not non-free. The problem is most users have NVidia/ATI graphics and
the free drivers don't have any/good enough 3d acceleration for it. You
should be able to run Unity with Intel graphics though and free drivers since
they have 3d acceleration support.

While I'm not saying MATE does not have an active development community I
think Cinnamon is where Linux Mint is going. That was the impression I got
from Clem (the lead developer of that project) when I spoke with him a short
while back.

I think Linux Mint has potential and while it isn't a free distribution today
Clem doesn't seem to be hostile to freedom either. Lets keep working on
Trisquel and one day Linux Mint will have a free version or being only free
software. It's where I'd like to think GNU/Linux in general is going. We are
certainly going to push it wherever feasible (mostly on the back end, free
drivers, free firmware, OGG Theora based video streaming services, etc).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing 5.5 on Toshiba Notebook

2012-06-29 Thread chris
Free software users should avoid AMD. The company has not released the
required specifications/code for a free version. It's released partial code
that wraps around non-free code. It's not a solution. It is a PR stunt.

Intel Graphics are the answer. They come very close to NVidia on the low end
and are actually better in a number of areas.
