An intern is an extra set of hands around a studio or production
office, which benefits both the intern and the facility where he/she
works

Sometimes that was exactly what my internship was. Making copies.
Buying liquor for the post-show parties I wasn't invited to. Other
times I was able to do more interesting/involved things. I happened to
have had genuine practical engineering experience in college, so
eventually the guy at CNBC West who did most of the in-house
engineering let me tinker a bit once I showed him I knew what a
waveform and vectorscope were for. But at first I did little more than
answer phones and try to learn through the osmosis of a cable news
network office and studio. The hours were insane, the traffic sucked,
and that's the way every internship I've ever heard about in Hollywood
is described.

It'll lead to fewer internships and, worse, leave more college kids
struggling to find work. Look, for me, my internship was my foot in
the door. From my summer at CNBC I established connections and was
later hired as an NBC Page where I expanded my network, then continued
making connections and ultimately worked for five solid years on
nearly 50 different TV shows without a break. I was atypical because I
wanted to do the whole Hollywood thing. Most of my classmates at my
college in Washington state remained in the state and took really
crappy internships with the local affiliates, where there was little
to do but the aforementioned coffee retrieval. But the value for them
was the same as mine -- establishing industry connections. Many of my
friends who took crappy local TV internships 20 years ago are now
senior anchors and producers and directors of those same local
stations. An internship in the entertainment industry isn't going to
be glamorous, and rarely will it involve more than three active brain
cells until the intern builds a relationship of trust with those
around him/her. The hours will be long, the work boring and pedantic,
and when you graduate to your first paying job in Hollywood, the hours
will be long and the the work will be boring and pedantic. But you
build upon it. Or you say "fuck it" and join the Peace Corps like I
ultimately did.

But the questions are these: are you being used to do work that would

Your internship was valuable. You didn't sit in a bullpen until a PA told
you to go on a Starbucks run or run off to the copy center to wait for
copies all day and shuttle them back and forth. But this is the kind of
bullshit that happens sometimes. Big business shouldn't be allowed to
exploit eager college kids like that. Will it mean fewer internships? Yes,
but it will lead to higher quality internships, I believe.

2013-06-27 Thread Kevin M.
When I first heard about this, I went on Facebook and messaged my
former boss Michael, who hired me as an intern at CNBC in Burbank back
in the 1990s where I worked with Tom Snyder and Geraldo Rivera, and
was deeply entrenched in the OJ Trial, and had enough experiences to
last ten lifetimes. I told Michael, "I know I agreed to intern for you
for free (well, for college credit) 20 years ago, and I know it was a
beneficial experience for which I am eternally grateful, but
apparently you owe me money so cough it up or I'll see you in court."
He promptly told me to stick it, as well he should. And if Tom Snyder
were alive today and I demanded money for interning on his show, he'd
have kicked my ass up and down the block... and televised it.

In the business we call show, you know going into an internship that
all you will get is practical experience (sometimes college credit, as
in my case). No money. Never money. If you are paid money, it is a
job, not an internship. These lawsuits and the cry babies who file
them and/or collect on them tick me off. And the pissants who collect
the money will NEVER work in the industry again except maybe as
fluffers in valley porn. As for the long hours, in Hollywood runners
are paid a day wage. Doesn't matter how many hours -- some days I
worked 20 hour days, and on a few blessed instances my days were less
than 90 minutes long. But typically the days seemed to average 16 to
18 hours, and you as a young kid in Hollywood have to decide if it is
worth it. But once you decide, you do the stinking job. If they
promise to pay you but then don't, as one deceased famous face's
production company did to me, that's a different story. But all this
nonsense about interns needing to be paid is just... well... nonsense.

RE: [TV orNotTV] Real Breaking News in TX Tues. (Not That Cable Was Paying Attention to It)

2013-06-27 Thread Steve Cooper
The worst part for the cable news networks is that they missed out on some
amazing television. No matter what side of the debate you are on, it was
impossible to take your eyes off the stream, and the crowd in the gallery
simply refusing to let the Republican majority push through what they felt
was an unjust vote was a triumphant display of Civil Disobedience. It
actually made this transplanted Yankee proud to be a Texan.

Even more shameful was that the local stations here in the Dallas-Fort Worth
area gave it only the obligatory coverage and cut to the late night shows
after their news broadcasts right as the action in statehouse was reaching
the critical point.

Paying Attention to It)

Late Tuesday night, Texas state legislator Wendy Davis was wrapping up what
turned out to be a successful real honest-to-goodness filibuster to stop
voting on a bill to ban abortion clinics, the kind of story that you would
think cable news would salivate over--but the Big 3 channels were in
late-night rerun mode, which meant that one had to go to the Internet and
the Texas Tribune's online stream to see this legitimately big news
event--wha? (and no, Amy Goodman-ites, I don't think it's the "corporate
media," because if that was true Rachel Maddow wouldn't have even covered
the earlier parts of the story on her show that night because Comcast
wouldn't had let her):

c-abortion-vote-texas-99986

And oh yes, MSNBC's excuse was that the Maddow show covered the lead-up and
that Maddow's blog had embedded the Texas Tribune live stream. CNN and FNC
didn't say nothin' to the Wrap (I suspect that lame-duck Current didn't
cover it and that BBC World News thought it was too parochial, although I
would hope that Katty Kay had it the next day on "World News America").

Re: [TV orNotTV] Real Breaking News in TX Tues. (Not That Cable Was Paying Attention to It)

2013-06-27 Thread David Lynch
There was also pretty very little live coverage from Texas-based TV either
(at least here in Austin.) YNN had a live episode of "Capitol Tonight" at
11:00 that largely consisted of simulcasting the Texas Senate TV channel,
and I didn't see when they cut away but they were back to videotape by
12:30, with the actual result unknown at that time. If any of the
over-the-air stations had special reports, they weren't on while I was
using picture-in-picture to flip through channels.

[TV orNotTV] Maggie Gyllenhaal is 'An Honourable Woman'

2013-06-27 Thread Mark Jeffries
The American actress will star in an eight-part Middle East political
thriller for the BBC and Sundance--it will air on BBC2 in the UK and
Sundance in the U.S. next year:

[TV orNotTV] Nick Series Gets Hit With 'Intern Justice'

2013-06-27 Thread Mark Jeffries
Attorney Maurice Planko, who has been busy representing TV and movie
interns suing for lost wages in exchange for long days under his "Intern
Justice" program, has filed on behalf of Kevin Hicks, who worked repeated
10-16 hour days on the Nicktoons live action series (gosh, just like
Cartoon Network) "Alien Dawn" and should be paid for his work--just earlier
this month, two interns who worked on the film "Black Swan" were ruled by a
NY court that they should receive pay for their work:

http://www.thewrap.com/tv/article/intern-lawsuit-filed-against-nickelodeon-production-alien-dawn-100271

This I can agree with--what's bugging me is why a live-action series would
be on what is supposed to be a channel devoted to animated programming. I
assume Nick's argument is that Nicktoons is programmed for boys while the
mothership is programmed for girls. Then why call the channel Nicktoons?
How about calling it, uh, Nick XD?

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Soap dish

2013-06-27 Thread Mark Jeffries
Speaking of SoapNet, I saw an ad saying that the prime time repurpose of
"Y&R" is moving/has moved to TVGN. Is CBS going to try to convince the
Bells to let "B&B" be prime time repurposed? And will "Days" eventually
move off SoapNet?
