Re: [TV orNotTV] So long, Julie Harris
For a while there, somebody was posting episodes of Match Game is video podcasts, but Game Show network nixed them (a few times). I have about 100 of them, but I haven't properly archived them by every celebrity who appeared on episodes. If I see it, I'll let you know. And a role challenging in its own way: Pretending to be Charles Nelson Reilly's "girl friend" in a week of "Tattletales" episodes. Even if somehow they are telling the truth here (which I absolutely do not believe they are) their credibility is completely compromised. Half (I use "half" very loosely here) of what they do looks like it is delivering sports news, the other half is making money selling advertising space around athletic telecasts it has spent BILLIONS of dollars for. They have always claimed there was a firewall between the two, but a firewall that melts at the first touch of flame is not worth very much. The NFL is the largest of the sports ESPN makes money from. The single biggest challenge facing the NFL - and make no mistake, this is a potentially existential threat - is the concussion issue. Almost everything the NFL has been doing the last three or four years has been aimed at avoiding, or at least minimizing, HUGE, tobacco-industry caliber sanctions from a range of lawsuits in the pipeline or on the way. If there is even a 5% chance that the Frontline documentary is going to suggest that the NFL knew, or should have known, about the risk of long term consequences from concussion before it took steps to address them (or knew that there are no steps that can be taken to counter some of the more serous consequences), then there is no way ESPN would be part of it. The real question here is why ESPN allowed itself to get involved with this project at all. I do believe that there are journalists at ESPN who want to do good work, and they may sometimes get out in front of their corporate masters. It seems likely that the Frontline people came up with some unexpected hard evidence that will imply liability for the NFL, and the suits at ESPN called it off. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Re: [TV orNotTV] Vin Scully to return for 65th season
He generally does not call *non-playoff* games played east of Denver. He has made recent exceptions for the 2007 season opening series in Milwaukee, a 2007 series against the Chicago Cubs, and a 2010 series against Boston. I read somewhere that if the Dodgers make it to the World Series, Vin would call the game on the radio network, so that presumes he would travel to the home venue of the opposing team. Since the travel restriction was something he wanted, not the Dodgers organization, he apparently has the right to decide when he wants to override it and travel. He had planned to make the trip to NYC for the June series against the Yankees, saying that he had wanted to see the new stadium, but changed his mind two weeks beforehand because it would have been a six-hour overnight flight afterwards and a series at San Diego starting the next day. "We're looking forward to playing San Diego and trying to win the division," he said at the time. "I think it's more important to do San Diego." [TV orNotTV] 'BB's Gunn: People Hate Me Because They Hate Skyler
In an NYT op-ed, Anna Gunn, the journeywoman actress who became a cable star thanks to her portrayal of Walter White's not-necessarily supportive wife on "Breaking Bad" muses that there are people who have problems with strong women on television (like Skyler White, Carmela Soprano and Betty Draper--although in the latter I would conjecture that the problem may be more that January Jones can't act her way out of a paper bag) and then put the actress playing the role in the same category (actual Internet comment: “Could somebody tell me where I can find Anna Gunn so I can kill her?”--something that was probably never said about her first series role, the bikini-wearing babe in the long-forgotten Fox sitcom "Down the Shore"): http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/24/opinion/i-have-a-character-issue.html?_r=1&; Granted, there is something creepy about the prime example of morality and decency (at least in the beginning--Skyler has been slowly migrating to the dark side during the course of the series) being hated while audiences cheer the sick (in every way) antihero, but "Breaking Bad" was never intended to be a CBS procedural. And unless she's changed since her acting days in Chicago, Gunn is a very nice person in real life. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Re: [TV orNotTV] Vin Scully to return for 65th season
I believe Vin makes travel exceptions for the playoffs. I got a (handwritten!) letter from him in 2009, in which he apologizes for the lateness of the response, given that the Dodgers "kept me busy" in the offseason. --Dave Sikula On Friday, August 23, 2013 12:54:47 PM UTC-7, Joe Hass wrote: > > Anyone who loves baseball knows we're playing with house money when it > comes to Mr Scully and his choice to bless us with another season. > > Of the 122 professional sports franchises in the four major leagues that > exist now, only 40 existed when he started his career. > > I really like his attitude towards being asked to call an inning of a game > on Fox.
