For me, that's always been one of the great things about the original
"What's My Line?" The game was for such low stakes (that invariable
$50 cap is still only about $450 in current dollars, a nice prize but
not life-changing) that everybody could have fun without worrying
about the money.

When people watch "Match Game," the last thing they should be focused
on is the actual game aspect of the show. That episodes ended without
a clear winner was never of consequence to me. What mattered was how
funny Charles Nelson Reilly and the others were that given day.

Re: [TV orNotTV] NBC Bringing Back Fun Prime Time Game Show?

2013-03-15 Thread John Edwards
I'm 99% certain they run them out of order now. The panelists change
every day (other than the two regulars, at least one of whom is
obnoxious at any given time), and I have the sneaking suspicion that
they were all taped in about 2 weeks in Montreal sometime last summer.
There are very few references to previous shows, which is a weakness,
in my opinion.

I really want to like it, but it's just off. I don't know if it's the
match-up round, the panel, or something else. I think there is a
misconception that what made Match Game funny was the innuendo, but
there was more to it than that.

There was a period of about 6 months, October 1997-April 1998, when the rights
to most of the Goodson-Todman library expired, and they didn't have "Match
Game" on the schedule. Wikipedia claims that GSN called that time the "Dark
Period," but as far as I know, that's only a name given to it by online game
show fanboys -- it's not like GSN was using that term on the air (and why would
they?).

Again, Wikipedia's wrong -- they started with a 24-hour marathon of one episode
of every show that they had available in their library at the time, in more or
less chronological order. The first show aired was, I believe, "What's My
Line?".

The fast money round--or "Match-Ups!"--was created in the 1990 ABC version
as a way of playing a full game in one show and not having to play three
rounds and edit down the writing or play two rounds and risk having lots of
time to kill at the end (the problem that "Match Game PM" had which was
remedied by going to three rounds, but editing the writing and wisecracking
during the writing). It was played twice in each show after each regular
round with the same rules as in the new Canadian version. ABC didn't want
"straddling" (having a game carry over to the next day) and Canadian cable
doesn't either, because they'll run the damn things out of order eventually.

One of my favorite bar discussions at my previous place of business was
putting together a Match Game panel based on people at the office. We
immediately figured out the Brett and Charles spots, solved the
Dawson/Martin and White/Flagg seats shortly thereafter, but went back and
forth on the two "flavor of the week" seats on the left side. When we
finally had it mapped out, it hit me that two people who were born well
after the Rayburn era shows ended knew exactly what and who I was talking
about.

>From Mark Jeffries

Yes, as the Wikipedia page points out -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_It_All_%28game_show%29 - it is similar to
the incomprehensible Golden Balls and also Shafted which was something of a
notorious disaster (although more so in hindsight as the host's career
completely self-destructed a few years later).

It's interesting The Match Game is mentioned here because of course the
British version, Blankety Blank, was probably the ultimate in pointless
games-for-the-sake-of-playing-the-game -
http://www.ukgameshows.com/ukgs/Blankety_Blank I was reading an interview
with Terry Wogan from his spell as host as he said he loved it when nobody
scored any points or won anything because he felt that was really the ethos
of how they approached the game in the UK, just half an hour of idle fun,
comparing it to The Match Game. He said that if the prizes were actually
any good (which famously they weren't due to the Beeb not wanting to spend
licence-payer's money on them) they'd all have to concentrate, which
wouldn't be right. I think that's always been the way.

Probably the biggest game show on British TV now is Pointless (I love this
piece, written from a US perspective -
http://gameological.com/2012/05/british-game-shows-pointless/) and last
week the rollover jackpot had swollen to its highest ever total (which as a
daytime show on the BBC isn't much, around £25,000, it goes up a thousand
pounds a day), but the game was still played in the spirit of it just being
a bit of fun. And that's the way I prefer it. I'm much more engaged if I
like the contestants or the questions are on a subject that interests me.
I'm not winning the money so I don't care how much they're winning. I'm
more interested if they're playing for £1000 on Manic Street Preachers
singles than £25,000 on Robert Downey Jr films.

When The Weakest Link began and took off in the UK (which it did to the
extent that when it started in the US, the BBC showed the first US edition
unscheduled, almost immediately after its premiere in the US, because it
was such a novelty), there was a huge number of "nasty" game shows
following - Shafted was one of them - where contestants were encouraged to
rubbish their opposition and stab each other in the back but none of them
really caught on. I guess in the end it doesn't really ring true because,
at the end of the day, it doesn't matter so why take it seriously? As the
losing contestant on many a British game show has pointed out, they'd had a
lovely day regardless.

And of course if a format isn't engaging it doesn't matter how big the
prize is. In 1995, when the limits of the size of prizes were finally
lifted by the broadcasting authorities, Raise the Roof began which offered
a house as a prize, by some distance the biggest prize ever offered on UK
TV, and it got a lot of publicity, but the show completely flopped because
the format was as boring as they come.

I TiVo Gene Rayburn & Co. every weekday morning at 5:30 from GSN and enjoy
it with my breakfast.

Kevin's right: The simplicity of both the set and the game make it much
more fun to watch. The "glitz and glamour" of the more recent game shows
quite honestly give me a headache and I find no joy in watching them
(although GSN does seem to rerun a lot of those in the daytime hours).

Reading Kevin's post, I realize that the only elaboration "Match Game" had
was the revolving platform with the contestants on one side and the Super
Match on the other, the neon sign with the amount of the exact celebrity
match question, and the stylized (?) titles at the top of the show which
looked like it was illuminated with a set of Christmas tree lights. Almost
too cheesy to *not* be fun.

Mandel's latest show, based on a UK series, was doomed from the start
because, to succeed, you have to exhibit the very worst aspects of
humanity.

The other, big problem (I have), is that lots of these game shows aren't
about "How Much Can I Win?" but "How Much Can I Keep From Losing?"
(Million Pound/Dollar Money Drap, Cash Pump (Israeli(?) format) and one
from FOX called 'Dont Drop the Cash (or somesuch))

It isn't fun to see these schlubs START with (say) cash and piss it all
away over the course of 15-30 minutes.

2013-02-22 Thread Mark Jeffries
As far as I can tell, "Take It All" was not a direct adaptation of a
British format, although the "Prisoner's Dilemma" gambit is or has been
used by a British game show (and by GSN's old "Friend or Foe?", which was
uncomfortable enough with the low stakes cable jackpots, despite the fact
that Lisa Kennedy Montgomery tried to keep things relatively light). I
would say that the craziness was thinking that Secret Santa could be turned
into an hour-long game show.

Re: [TV orNotTV] NBC Bringing Back Fun Prime Time Game Show?

2013-02-22 Thread Kevin M.
When I was in college in the mid 1990s, CBS did a "special" series of
prime-time installments of "The Price is Right." The only difference
between the nighttime show and the usual version were slightly bigger
showcases, and Bob Barker wore a tuxedo. No celebrities... no false
sense of tension... just a fun show. For many of my college friends
and I, it was appointment TV. For that matter, so was "Where In The
World Is Carmen Sandiego?"... one of my roommates and I used to
schedule our classes and our work schedule so we could watch Carmen on
our lunchbreaks.

One of my favorite shows of all time continues to be "The Match Game,"
reruns of which I continue to watch regularly. The problem is that
gameshows got too elaborate. Even a simple premise like "WWTBAM?"
contained so many melodramatic lighting and music cues that it was
unwatchable. Two years ago when I started teaching game-design
students the basics of the industry, I began by asking them what the
most profitable game of 2011 was. Some would list the latest Grand
Theft, others WoW or Arkham Asylum, then I'd reveal it was Angry
Birds. Angry Birds was developed for less than $100k and made over
$300 million in its debut year. Other games made that much, but their
development costs were prohibitively more, and their licensing and
marketing budgets through the roof. A simple premise that is fun CAN
work. But network brass really likes the idea of overly glitzed,
overly complex showpieces that make their network a bright shiny
object they can stare at.

Mandel's latest show, based on a UK series, was doomed from the start
because, to succeed, you have to exhibit the very worst aspects of
humanity. And viewers want to root for people to win on game shows.
The show might as well have been hosted by that mentally defective
jackass who hosts "The Apprentice."

I would like to see fun game shows rise again; they are certainly
better than reality TV, and most are genuinely family friendly.

[TV orNotTV] NBC Bringing Back Fun Prime Time Game Show?

2013-02-22 Thread Mark Jeffries
The Peacock has put an 8-ep order for "Hollywood Game Night," with what
producer Sean "Just Jack" Hayes (whose company produces "Grimm" for NBC and
"Hot in Cleveland" and "Soul Man" for TV Land) is promising as A-list
celebs playing games with civilian contestants (like in the 60s when the
prime time "Password" would attract the likes of Jack Benny or Jimmy
Stewart to play the game)--Jane Lynch is hosting and considering that NBC's
last attempt at a big-money, overblown production, screaming contestant
show (Howie Mandel's "Take It All") was a bomb, this would be welcome:
