[Bug 1787845] [NEW] Broken xdriinfo on Ubuntu 18.04 breaks driconf
Public bug reported: driconf doesn't work on Ubuntu 18.04. The reason is that xdriinfo fails with "Screen 0: not direct rendering capable." There appears to be a fix for this upstream: https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/xdriinfo/commit/?id=6273d9dacbf165331c21bcda5a8945c8931d87b8 Building my own xdriinfo from the upstream source code fixed the problem for me. Please consider updating xdriinfo for Ubuntu 18.04 to unbreak driconf. [Bug 939858] Re: Switch user does not work
I think the problem is that you're simply running out of video memory. Each user session runs in its own Xserver. Each Xserver needs video memory for various render and display buffers. A number of factors influence video memory usage: * number and size of attached monitors * virtual desktop size * driver features requiring additional video memory per monitor: - monitor rotation - tear-free desktop - OpenGL overlay - stereo 3D * 3D OpenGL applications * composite manager * 2D applications If the system has been running for a while, video memory fragmentation can also prevent successful allocation of the required buffers even if the raw amount of free memory would be sufficient. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/939858 Title: Switch user does not work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/939858/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 933509] Re: Incorrect Flash Player version
I have the same problem. The Shockwave flash 10.1 plugin is actually gnash. The Adobe flash plugin doesn't show up in Firefox at all. I found that running update-alternatives --config mozilla-flashplugin can fix the problem by switching the flashplugin alternative from gnash back to the Adobe flash plugin. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 830173 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/830173 I don't think this is the same as bug#830173. The complaint with 830173 is about the naming of the Gnash flash plugin and/or confusing update messages. My complaint is that my flash plugin alternative changed automatically after a flashplugin-installer update. I didn't even know I had an alternative flash plugin unstalled without some serious digging. The end user impact for me is an unexplained and severe loss in functionality. I believe the solution for this bug would involve a change to how the mozilla-flashplugin alternative is handled. I'm getting these symptoms ever since I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04. Before the update the system used to be very stable and stay up for weeks without rebooting. That looks like there is no fglrx kernel module installed for the -pae kernel. Normally DKMS should build the kernel module automatically when you boot your -pae kernel. If that's not happening for some reason, that may be a bug in DKMS. You can manually tell DKMS to build the fglrx kernel module for your -pae kernel with: sudo dkms build -m fglrx -v 8.840 -k 2.6.38-8-generic-pae sudo dkms install -m fglrx -v 8.840 -k 2.6.38-8-generic-pae Then reboot to the -pae kernel. Thanks, Beat, for following up. [Bug 763005] Re: Fglrx with Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes Unity/Compiz plugins to crawl
@robinl: What about the sync-to-vsync setting in CompizConfig Settings Manager (AKA ccsm)? As already reported by other users, this seems to be the main problem leading to poor compositor frame rates on Ubuntu 11.04 with fglrx, regardless of raw hardware performance. Some users with low end or integrated graphics are still experiencing lag even with sync-to-vsync disabled in ccsm. See Nick's report above for example. That's why I was suggesting to try the other vsync and tear-free options in the Catalyst Control Center. You have a fairly powerful discrete graphics card, so I would not expect your system to be affected by long lag as reported by Nick. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/763005 Title: Fglrx with Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes Unity/Compiz plugins to crawl -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

But it took me several hours to figure out what was happening, in which I found out more than I ever wanted to know about ID3 tags before realizaing that the answer was as simple as file permissions. [Bug 661411] [NEW] Multi-core load balancing not working properly after suspend to disk
Public bug reported: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860, 4 cores, hyperthreading Symptoms: After suspending to disk load balancing of processes across CPU cores is not working properly. Runnable processes have to share a CPU core even if idle CPU cores are available. This is particularly noticeable when running parallel builds (e.g. make -j8 ...). They take much longer and the GNOME system monitor applet shows that most CPU cores are idle when there is enough work to keep them all busy. A simple test to visualize the problem is to run (while true; do true; done) (while true; do true; done) in bash and look at the CPU usage in top. After a fresh boot, the two subshells run with 100% CPU usage each, so each gets its own core to run on. When running this experiment after a suspend/resume cycle the two subshells run with 50% CPU usage each, so they're made to share a CPU core, although idle CPU cores are available. Steps to reproduce: * Boot system * log in as normal user * run the following command in a terminal window running bash: (while true; do true; done) (while true; do true; done) * In a second terminal window run top and observe two bash processes at the top, each running with 100% CPU usage (each bash gets its own CPU core) * kill the two bash subshell processes * suspend to disk * wake up the system * Run the same command as above: (while true; do true; done) (while true; do true; done) * In top the two bash processes run with 50% CPU usage (the two bash processes apparently share one CPU core, although idle cores are available) Expected result: load balancing should continue working after resuming. The two bash subshells should each run with 100% CPU usage. Actual result: load balancing is broken after resume. The two bash subshells have to share a CPU core even when idle CPU cores are available to balance the load. [Bug 609938] Re: fglrx fails build on 2.6.35-10-generic
This happens every time Ubuntu updates their kernel and/or Xorg version and leaves the old fglrx driver in place that was never designed to work with those new X.org and kernel versions. Maybe one way to save users this kind of trouble in the future would be to add versioned dependencies to fglrx to make it conflict with kernel or X.org versions newer than what was in the last stable Ubuntu release. This way, if a user explicitly or implicitly updates their X.org or kernel to a new major version, they'd be forced to uninstall fglrx first. -- fglrx fails build on 2.6.35-10-generic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/609938 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 617881] Re: package fglrx-kernel-source 2:8.593-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build
You're trying to install our Legacy driver on a current OS. That's not going to work. The last Ubuntu version supported by the legacy driver was Ubuntu 8.10. Your RS690 (Radeon X1200) is not supported by the current proprietary driver. So your only option on current Ubuntu versions is the open source driver. In my experience it works well on RS690 including desktop effects. [Bug 623544] Re: package fglrx-kernel-source 2:8.593-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build
The 8.593 driver you're using is the last one that works on R5xx-based cards, such as your X1600. However, that driver doesn't support any Ubuntu version newer than Ubuntu 8.10. On Ubuntu 10.04 your only choice for a graphics driver is the open- source Radeon driver that ships with Ubuntu. That driver should give you desktop effects. It may not work very will with games though. I recommend you uninstall fglrx. Having fglrx installed breaks the Radeon driver. Looks like a version mismatch between the kernel module and the user- space X driver. [Bug 561292] Re: Resume from sleep fails / extremely slow with fglrx
The fglrx driver saves all used video memory to system memory before suspending. When you suspend to disk all that memory also has to be swapped out to the swap partition. If you have a graphics card with lots of memory and not a lot of available system memory, the saving of video memory will cause a lot of paging. This will affect your performance on suspend/resume. If your swap partition is too small that may cause suspend to fail completely. Three factors that will have a big impact on your suspend performance: 1. amount of video memory (reported by amdcccle) 2. amount of available system memory (reported by free, 2nd line -/+ buffers/cache) 3. amount of available swap space (reported by free, 3rd line) Some rules of thumbs: 1. You should have about 1GB more system memory than video memory, more is better 2. You should have more swap space than system memory, typically by a factor 2 Possible remedies (depending on your situation): 1. make sure your swap partition is big enough, typical recommendation is 2x amount of RAM 2. get more RAM (always a good idea and a cheap option to improve overall system performance and responsiveness) -- Resume from sleep fails / extremely slow with fglrx https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/561292 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
