kernel-image + dependencies (restricted-modules) only. The 2.6.19 kernel
seems to fix this issue..

2006-12-16 Thread Steve Kowalik
Ah ha. That doesn't require that you rename the postrm, it requires that
you understand what the -a option does for debhelper scripts. :-)

-a acts all on architecture-dependant packages, of which xfonts-dosemu
isn't. :-)

Add -i to the dh_installxfonts call, and it should be good, sans the
postrm change for a much smaller debdiff.

[Bug 75850] Re: gaim should use gnome-keyring for passwords

2006-12-16 Thread Richard Laager
Luke, I like your formula...

(This is on top of Luke's comments, which I agree with 100%.)

For *me* to not strongly object, I'd have to know that the double-
prompting I was seeing with NetworkManager using gnome-keyring was
fixed, or a NetworkManager bug. Ethan has the same problem with gnome-
keyring and NetworkManager.

For me to support this *in Ubuntu*, I'd like to see gnome-keyring
integrated, using pam_keyring to unlock the keyring with your account
password. I want to package pam_keyring for Debian & Ubuntu, but the
latest version depends on pam >= 0.99. I have a bug filed about that
against both Debian and Ubuntu, I think.

[Bug 76091] kmilo-legacy needed to display brightness changes, zoom, etc, on Thinkpad T41p

2006-12-16 Thread Andreas Ntaflos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeutils

First: the volume keys (volume up, volume down, mute) work fine.

Using a Thinkpad T41p with Kubuntu 6.10 I had to install kmilo-legacy
and enable it in the KDE control centre. That apparently was the only
way to get on-screen display messages for brightness changes, Thinklight
toggles or Fn-Spacebar (zoom, configure for ksnapshot). Prior to that I
made sure the nvram module was loaded, that udev assigns it the correct
group and permissions and that my user was part of the nvram group:

crw-rw 1 root nvram 10, 144 2006-12-17 06:26 /dev/nvram

This bug has probably been reported already (a forum post on
ubuntuforums.org indicates that) but I couldn't find it, I'm afraid.

This starts another problem: the generic kmilo plugin apparently
interferes with kmilo-legacy when changing volume; the volume bar jumps
around quite a bit, e.g. from 100% to 73% to 86%, and so on in that
fashion. This problem is related or similar to bug #61822 and bug #51537
(most Thinkpads have hardware sound mixing and do not need any software
mixer to change volume or mute) and a very unfortunate situation.

[Bug 69954] Re: Firefox crash dialog gives confusing dialog

2006-12-16 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
"OK" is the standard term for the "OK, I've read that" button in error alerts
in Gnome (as well as in Windows and Mac OS).

It's not a wonderful term, and over the past few years I've occasionally
wondered about changing it to something else, but the best alternative I
can think of is "Apology Accepted", which is a bit dodgy. :-) And if we
did change it, we should change it in Gnome in general, not just apport
in particular. So for now I think this should be left as it is.

[Bug 75850] Re: gaim should use gnome-keyring for passwords

2006-12-16 Thread Luke Schierer
To not strongly object, I would have to see that the patch author had
considered the case of a user switching between gnome and not-gnome, and
had handled it in a sane way. This would minimally have to be handled
in the case of one such transition.

To gain my _support_, the patch would have to additionally be able to
handle multiple such transitions, for example the user who has a .gaim
directory on a usb key and moves between home and work, where one is
gnome and the other not.

[Bug 75850] Re: gaim should use gnome-keyring for passwords

2006-12-16 Thread Mark Doliner
Pros: Gaim would no longer store plaintext passwords in
$HOME/.gaim/accounts.xml

Cons: Exactly what Sebastien said, it adds extra dependencies and forces
people to enter their keyring password when running Gaim.

It would definitely have to be an optional feature, since Gaim is not a
Gnome application, and that complicates things some. I'm not very
familiar with the Gnome keyring daemon... but what would happen if the
keyring daemon isn't running? The patch would need to make sure that
Gaim falls back to doing something sensible, and possibly even warning
the user. I'm particularly concerned about the case where someone
switches between Gnome and non-Gnome.

I'm not opposed to adding support for this, and it sounds like other
Gaim developers would be ok with it if it were done REALLY well, but the
discussion on the gaim-devel mailing list about it was too short to
really draw a concensus.

[Bug 76079] Wireless silently fail when the PC is not authorised to connect to AP

2006-12-16 Thread merc
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Sorry, I am not entirely sure which package this applies to.
Here is the problem.
I have a Modem/router Netgear DG834G and a laptop with Ubuntu Feisty on it.
It works beautifully - wireless and everything.

However, here is the problem. My router is configurable so that only
pre-specified MAC addresses can connect to it. Yeah, it's very unsafe,
but it's an overkill since there aren't houses around me.

If my laptop is NOT in the list of approved MAC addresses, wireless
networking will fail. And that's fair enough. HOWEVER, the problem is
that it will fail QUIETLY, without telling me why or without even giving
me an error message.

If I do the very same thing with my Apple iBook, then a nice dialog box
nicely tells you that the connection to the AP could not be established.

I am not exactly a newbie; however, I was silly enough to forget about
the MAC address issue (in fact, I thought I had disabled it) and spent
hours and hours trying to figure out why it didn't connect.

I really, really think having a message explaining that the connection
could not be established is a _must_ here. I am not sure why this isn't
happening already - maybe not many people use such a lame protection
method? Well, I am not a big fan of "quiet fails", so I thought I'd
report this bug.

Which package is involved here? Is ther a daemon that handles this?

Thank you for listening :-D

Merc.

[Bug 52167] Re: DSL configuration is suboptimal.

2006-12-16 Thread Michael T. Richter
That spec seems to be missing the point entirely. The issue isn't just
that it's CLI vs. GUI. It's that the CLI thing itself requires the user
to try out about a thousand different ways to connect and provides no
useful feedback (of any kind!) when it fails. Any sane user would
rather have a CLI system that works and does the Right Thing (whatever
that right thing may be) over a GUI system that is confusing,
frustrating and poorly-documented.

In short, the issue isn't the UI, it's the functionality proper.
Pppoeconf doesn't work, out of the box, for any system I've ever used it
on. I'm sure it works for some people somewhere, and I'm sure that if
you're really tenacious you can make it work on any system anywhere, but
when MICROSOFT can make something complex work simply and quickly
out of the box, not to mention every router box in the world, and Linux
can't? It's time to make Linux catch up with what the rest of the world
has been able to do for years.

Linksys, incidentally, has a lot of GPLed code for their router and DSL
boxes. Linksys routers, by coincidence, are easy to connect up to DSL
setups. Perhaps a quick peek at ftp://ftp.linksys.com/opensourcecode";>ftp://ftp.linksys.com/opensourcecode
could make this happen quickly?

[Bug 62471] Re: Enabling SSL makes apache2 segfault

2006-12-16 Thread Scott Henson
Are you running php? It would seem that apache2+mod_ssl+php causes some
problems. Or at least that is what Ive been able to glean from google.
I'd also check that /dev/urandom is working as apache seems to be dying
just after accessing it.

[Bug 76078] EACCES in usb backend very difficult to diagnose

2006-12-16 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

(Till, I've discussed this bug with you briefly in the past)

When there is a problem with device permissions in the usb backend (and
potentially with other CUPS backends), such as bug 76077, this does not
result in any failure or error message. Jobs sit in the print queue in
job-printing state and stay there indefinitely. No error is logged in
CUPS error_log, syslog or displayed to the user at any time. The
backend can be seen running, but not doing much.

This seems needlessly complex to diagnose using strace on the backend.
It should simply fail and report an error to the user so that the
problem can be fixed.

** Affects: cupsys (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 76077] Permissions on /dev/usblp* don't agree with cupsys

2006-12-16 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

/dev/usblp0 on my feisty system is 0660 root/plugdev, which results in
cupsd not being able to write to it (cupsys : lpadmin lp dialout scanner
ssl-cert). This is a regression from Edgy.

Than you for this bug report. Unfortunetly, this happens for all
applications because applications are to be run as "kdesu in the
run command (in the K menu). This is the proper way to run the command
as super user graphically.
