[Bug 92088] Re: this does not work with dell 1390

2007-09-08 Thread Alex Mayorga Adame
FWIW

Here's how I got rid of the bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw"
not available or load failed. messages with my
Broadcom Corporation Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-PCI Card (rev 01)

 wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o
 sudo bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware ./wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o
 sudo ifconfig eth1 down
 sudo ifconfig eth1 up

After that the dmesg errors disappeared.

[Bug 138366] Re: Login Screen Lacks Alterable Keyboard Layout Option

2007-09-08 Thread Roel Huybrechts
Similar bugs have been reported to the developers of GDM:
* the default keyboard should be the default keyboard for gdm:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=414571
* Provide a means to change the keyboard layout from gdm login screen?:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=307926

I added this report as a comment of that last bug.

** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu)

I'm using gutsy for a week. Since my last dist-upgrade from 8th August
2007 kontact crashes on login and can't be started after login even if I

Re: [Bug 571] Re: The 64bit mplayer binary/package can't use the 32bit win32codecs to play *wmv files.

2007-09-08 Thread Iwan
"" I've ran x86_64 on my laptop from 2004-2006 without ever needing what
you're asking for. I couldn't play all weird codecs out there, but most
of them and all I really wanted to see worked OOTB. Stop spreading FUD
please. ""

I ran 32bit for a long time and almost decided to run XP or Slackware
again, because mplayer did not play all the formats I wanted to play
under 64bit Ubuntu. I used to make a 32bit binary on Slackware, since
Ubuntu did not allow for cross-compiling, these days I use a 32bit
machine in my living room. The first thing friends who decided to test
Linux wants me to do, is to install something which will play all
their media files. They don't care if they can run a Beryl cube even,
PCs are mostly for entertainment these days. Lately everyone has been
using .flv and things mplayer can play, not .wmv or .rm though .flv
did not work 100% for quite some time, which is why I just use mplayer
svn, Ubuntu has failed its users in providing 100% media support,
instead settling for 70% which is just not good enough.

[Bug 138367] Re: abcde fails to tag m4a (aac) files

2007-09-08 Thread Kristian Erik Hermansen
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ faac --long help
Freeware Advanced Audio Coder
FAAC 1.24

Usage: faac [options] infiles ...

Quality-related options:
-q Set default variable bitrate (VBR) quantizer quality in percent
(default: 100, averages at approx. 120 kbps VBR for a normal
stereo input file with 16 bit and 44.1 kHz sample rate; max.
value 500, min. 10).Set quantizer quality.
-b Set average bitrate (ABR) to approximately kbps.
-c Set the bandwidth in Hz (default: automatic, i.e. adapts
maximum value to input sample rate).

Input/output options:
  - If you simply use a hyphen/minus sign instead of an input
file name, FAAC can encode directly from stdin, thus enabling
piping within other applications like foobar2000 (see example
below). The same works for stdout as well, so FAAC can pipe its
output to other apps such as mp4live (streaming live AAC
content).
-o X Set output file to X (only for one input file)
  -PRaw PCM input mode (default: off, i.e. expecting a WAV header;
necessary for input files or bitstreams without a header; using
only -P assumes the default values for -R, -B and -C in the
input file).
-RRaw PCM input sample rate in Hz (default: 44100 Hz, max. 96 kHz)
-BRaw PCM input sample size (default: 16, also possible 8, 24, 32
bit fixed or float input).
-CRaw PCM input channels (default: 2, max. 33 + 1 LFE).
-XRaw PCM swap input bytes (default: bigendian).
-I Input multichannel configuration (default: 3,4 which means
Center is third and LFE is fourth like in 5.1 WAV, so you only
have to specify a different position of these two mono channels
in your multichannel input files if they haven't been reordered
already).
-raw AAC output mode (i.e. without ADTS headers, needed when
directly using the AAC bitstream in a MP4 container like e.g.
mp4live does; -w uses this mode automatically).

MP4 specific options:
-wWrap AAC data in MP4 container. (default for *.mp4 and *.m4a)
  --artist XSet artist to X
  --writer XSet writer to X
--title X Set title to X
--genre X Set genre to X
--album X Set album to X
  --compilation Set compilation
  --track X Set track to X (number/total)
  --disc X Set disc to X (number/total)
--year X Set year to X
--cover-art X Read cover art from file X
Supported image formats are gif, jpg, and png.
--comment X Set comment to X

Expert options:
--no-tns Disable TNS, temporal noise shaping, coding.
  --no-midside Don't use mid/side coding.
  --mpeg-vers X AAC MPEG version, X can be 2 or 4.
--obj-type X AAC object type. (LC (Low Complexity, default), Main or LTP
(Long Term Prediction)
--shortctl X Enforce block type (default: both; 1 = short only; 2 = long
only).

Documentation:
  --license Show the FAAC license.
  --helpShow this abbreviated help.
  --long-help Show complete help.

Using manual partitioning to assign mount points to several already
created partitions, the XP system is not detected regardless of whether
the NTFS partition is mounted during the install.

[Bug 138366] Login Screen Lacks Alterable Keyboard Layout Option

2007-09-08 Thread Satoshi Tanabe
Public bug reported:

I chose Dvorak as my keyboard layout during installation. Now I can use
Dvorak everywhere including the login screen. I really like it.

Now, if multiple users want to use my laptop (this hasn't occurred to me
yet), shouldn't they be able to type their passwords using their own
keyboard layouts?

How about letting the user click on his/her username (just like Fedora
7's login screen [1]) and loading each person's keyboard layout settings
automatically?

[Bug 138365] release notes link fails to link

2007-09-08 Thread GabrielGrant
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Left clicking the "release notes" button does not appear to cause
anything to happen. Right clicking allows the link to be copied to the
clipboard, but when pasted is
"http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/ReleaseNotes?os=ubuntu&ver=7.10&lang=${LANG}";

[Bug 58981] Re: After loading X on terminal keboard hangs

Really, since we reserve tty1 for a text login, we should simply search
for SCREEN_02 onwards, and simply ignore SCREEN_01.

I'll patch in my tree to avoid this problem, and add documentation to
the handbook to explain the reason why.

[Bug 138362] BCM43XX Doesn't associate after restricted-manager installs its driver

2007-09-08 Thread Jamie Jackson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: restricted-manager

Dell D620; Gutsy Tribe 5; Dell 1390 Wireless (=BCM4311); x86

I'm Live Booting Gutsy Tribe 5. It detected my BCM4311 in the restricted
drivers manager. I installed what it wanted me to ("Firmware for
Broadcom 43xx Chipset Family").

Using NetworkManager, I can see my AP, but can't associate. I was able
to connect with Fiesty via fwcutter and ndiswrapper (respectively).

Attached is output from:
"sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog | grep NetworkManager > syslog.txt:
...it shows before, during, and after I try to associate.

I'm seeing a lot of
Sep 9 03:34:27 ubuntu NetworkManager: Activation (eth1): waiting for
device to cancel activation.
Sep 9 03:34:27 ubuntu NetworkManager: Error getting killswitch power:
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.KillSwitch.NotSupported - Access type not supported

...which seems like a problem, but don't know how to interpret.

Apologies if this bug report is misguide or misplaced, as maybe it
belongs upstream? I don't know, I'm just hoping to get it fixed for the
Gutsy release, since this device causes so many headaches when it has to
be configured manually.

Note to self: I used latest bzr version of restricted-manager as
suggested by Matteo in https://bugs.launchpad.net/restricted-

[Bug 134134] Re: [gutsy] no default application for ogg files

2007-09-08 Thread GabrielGrant
A couple notes: First, as of today's daily desktop live image, this is
still a problem...are we expecting to merge the upstream patch before
beta freeze?

Second, does the patch also address .spx files? "fables_01_01_aesop.spx"
from the Examples directory on the live cd throws the same error when
double-clicked. If the patch was already included upstream and this
wasn't addressed, I suppose I should open a new bug.

Thanks,
-Gabriel

[Bug 13199] Re: Drag n' Drop directories from File-Roller is somewhat tricky

2007-09-08 Thread amano
This would be great, if it could be included for Gutsy.

Since it just adds a protocol, regressions don't seem to be probable.

Maybe Sebastien should consider this patch for inclusion since it fixes
a big regression because up until Edgy Eft dragging and dropping files
from FileRoller to the desktop at least partly worked. For all those
switching from the Dapper LTS this would be a new regression.

And yeah, thanks for your patch, Amos. Sometimes wonders DO happen.

I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do, but this patch makes

[Bug 138358] Kmail cant send via Google-Smtp: Message: Credentials Rejected

2007-09-08 Thread Kefin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmail

Until yesterday everything worked fine (for about 2 weeks i'm using Kmail aus
my Mail client).
Today i always get this message when trying to send a mail via google mail:

"Credentials Rejected" --> followed by some number.
"The Server doenst support plain authentification"

Infact, plain-auth is the only auth-method the google smtp server supports.
Sending Mail via Opera and Thunderbird is flawlessly. (with the same config:
tls: 587)
I tested the other 2 configuration alternatives describend on googles help site
(ssl:25;ssl:468)
but that didnt work neither.

I even got the message, the server wouldnt listen on these ports, what
is actually not correct.

I cant help myself. do you have suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Kevin

[Bug 134918] Re: Misleading error message - software source for package is not enabled

2007-09-08 Thread Jamie Jackson
I had the same issues with Tribe 5 and the bcm43xx. I'm not exactly a
new user, but I even had a head-scratching moment over the "The software
source for package is not enabled" message. I'd agree that a
new user would be hopelessly lost.

Solution A sounds great from here (if only because I understand it, in
comparison to solution B).
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedManagerImprovements2

> A possible solution: give a shortcut to "Software Sources" inside the
message. This way, the user could at least know where to go. Then it's
just a simple matter of checking off the check boxes.

Well, there's also the "Update" step, which might not be intuitive.

In any case, I hope that *some* improvement is made by the Gutsy
release, even if it is a more instructive message.

...and now I've gotta go off and file a bug for the bcm43xx simply not
working (can't associate with listed APs in NM).

[Bug 138357] Gutsy Tribe 5 update-manager gives "Could not calculate the upgrade" error

2007-09-08 Thread Niranjan
Public bug reported:

alternate installation cd, the update-manager fails and gives a "could
not calculate upgrade" error.

[Bug 120302] More attempts, no success

2007-09-08 Thread fuzzyBSc
I just tried patching and building alsa as specified here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/116326/comments/75

No joy with either internal speakers or headphones. I can change volume
as before, and this apparently works. Everything appears to see the
card, and attempts to play normally. I just don't get any sound. Note
that under windows (Vista) the mixer arrangement for this machine is a
bit complicated, with separate controls for the front panel and main
speakers. I only see two volume settings under Ubuntu: Master and PCM.

I should also mention that whenever I rmmod and then modprobe snd_hda_intel
from the command-line, I get this sort of thing:
[ 23.984000] si3054: cannot initialize. EXT MID =
This message also appears in the boot-up dmesg output.

My laptop is nearly identical to matheuu's.

[Bug 138355] Gutsy, Nvidia, KDE, Compiz => screen blanks to white

2007-09-08 Thread Bruce Miller
Public bug reported:

Whenever I try to start KDE, the screen flashes and blanks several times
before coming to rest on a blank white screen. I have no reason to doubt
that KDE has actually loaded: for example, Alt-F2| kate produces a
brief burst of activity on the mouse pointer. But with a blank white
screen, all I can do is do restart the X server or drop to a virtual
console.

I originally raised this behaviour in the discussion under Bug #88152. I
believe, however, that this is a different problem. It appears to be
unique to KDE. I am able to use Gnome and XFE.

[Bug 133857] Re: In gutsy, kontact now crashes on startup (SIGSEGV)

2007-09-08 Thread João Pedro
I confirm this bug too.
I've just upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy today, and after that kontact crashes
on startup.
I don't think the problem is in Basket since it wasn't installed, and the
problem remains after install it.
I could only open kontact after edit ~/.kde/share/config/kontactrc so that it
didn't start in the summary view.
Now, i'm able to start kontact, but it crashes when i try to change to summary
view, if specialdatesplugin or todoplugin are enabled, but not always...
Problems with summary view?
I've got the latest version of kdepim (3.5.7enterprise20070904-0ubuntu2).

[Bug 138353] gkrellm disappears when nautilus is killed while using compiz

2007-09-08 Thread Kent deVillafranca
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gkrellm

When using compiz, killing nautilus will cause gkrellm to disappear.
gkrellm is still running, it just doesn't show up anywhere. Killing
gkrellm and restarting it will cause it to show up again. This is on
Gutsy, but the problem also occurred in Feisty (using Beryl instead of
compiz).

To reproduce: use compiz, start gkrellm, then bring up a terminal and
enter "killall nautilus". gkrellm will disappear from the desktop, but
will still show up in the process list. If gkrellm isn't set to allow
multiple instances, trying to start gkrellm won't make anything show up
until you've killed the existing gkrellm process.

2007-09-08 Thread m0eman
I'm not sure but it may be a kernel issue, when I tested I was using
kernel 2.6.22-10.30, and I just now tried with kernel 2.6.22-11.32.

I should finish my sentence, I tried with kernel 2.6.22-11.32 and it
still reports the wrong disk size.

[Bug 106209] Re: fsck Unable to resolve UUID

2007-09-08 Thread jerrylamos
Comment preceding asked about the UUID on the swap partition. I use the
same swap for all three Ubuntu's. Looking in /etc/fstab on each, the
swap UUID came out the same for the three installs; I wasn't paying that
close attention, but I'd conclude format didn't change the UUID for the
swap partition. After some activity like downloading updates the swap
does show "Used". Next install I'll look a bit more closely at the
swap UUID.

Trying several Linux distro's and levels of Ubuntu, sometimes they don't
work very well at all on one or another of our computers. Sure saves a
lot of grief having a backup Ubuntu so the computer isn't dead
altogether.

Now it can be messy, for example Tribe 4 blew up partway thru install
but after botching Grub so I had to use CD Live to re-install Grub, but
as soon as that was fixed my other partition was running fine.

How do we get Install to consider some means where the boot of the existing
system doesn't always fail? The current Ubuntu Tribe 6 boot message after the
fsck fail says a maintenance shell is being started, use Control-D to resume.
That doesn't work. "Exit" does. Is this a new bug for launchpad?
Jerry

no could you please provide the version of the software you're running.

if you execute the following command does make any difference:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ amixer -c 0 sset "Master",0 100%

[Bug 57146] Re: [prism2.5] doesn't associate for network-manager with hostap_cs

2007-09-08 Thread Andrew Jorgensen
The wext driver should be used with current versions of hostap but that
doesn't appear to be the problem. There is some interaction between the
driver and the firmware that is failing in some cases now. Probably the
next step would be to go back to versions of the kernel that worked and
compare them with versions that don't work.
