[Bug 822486] Re: Mouse and keyboard no longer work after upgrading to 11.04
(Copied from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11139820#post11139820) Here's how I solved this problem: Boot the 11.04 Live CD. Switch to a terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F1. Follow these instructions to mount your HD and get all the necessary /dev entries in a chroot enviornment: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-...e-from-livecd/ Next, edit /etc/default/grub and comment out the line GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 Run update-grub Reboot. Now the SHIFT key *will* bring up the grub menu; hold SHIFT after your BIOS POST. Select an older kernel. For me, 2.6.38-8 worked. Your keyboard should now work. Go and do an update with the update manager to get the latest kernel. Edit /etc/default/grub and put the line GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 back in. Run update-grub. Reboot. Worked for me. Your mileage may vary. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/822486 Title: Mouse and keyboard no longer work after upgrading to 11.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/822486/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 822486] [NEW] Mouse and keyboard no longer work after upgrading to 11.04
Public bug reported: This computer worked perfectly with 10.10. After upgrading to 11.04 today the mouse and keyboard no longer work. At the login screen, I am unable to do anything: Holding SHIFT or ESC during boot does not bring up the GRUB menu; Ctrl-Alt-Fn does not switch to a terminal; nothing works. Plugging them into different USB slots doesn't work. However, I am typing this with no problem from the Live CD, so I know it is not a hardware problem. Also the keyboard works fine in the BIOS settings screens. But once the kernel boots, not even the Caps Lock light works. Comparing (what I believe to be) relevant files between what's on my hard drive and what this Live CD is using reveals no interesting differences. I have found other reports of this problem (e.g. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11129795) but did not find any relevant bug reports or solution anywhere. [Bug 696690] [NEW] pulse sometimes fails to initialise with webcam (w/ USB mic) plugged in.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio Booting up, or resuming from suspend, pulse will very often (though not always) fail to initialize if a webcam with a USB mic is plugged in. This behavior was never observed with 10.04 and is new since upgrading to 10.10. With a Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 webcam plugged in, this appears in /var/log/user.log: pulseaudio[2310]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-card" (argument: "device_id="1" name="usb-046d_08c5_7F4AED81-02-U0x46d0x8c5" card_name="alsa_card.usb-046d_08c5_7F4AED81-02-U0x46d0x8c5" tsched=yes ignore_dB=no card_properties="module-udev-detect.discovered=1""): initialization failed. Pulse will continue to fail until the webcam is unplugged, at which point (or shortly thereafter) pulse will successfully start up. Once pulse is initialized, I can reconnect the webcam and it functions properly (both video and the microphone). $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.10 Release:10.10 $ uname -a Linux ubuntu 2.6.35-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 2 02:41:37 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ apt-cache policy pulseaudio pulseaudio: Installed: 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu21.1 Candidate: 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu21.1 Version table: *** 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu21.1 0 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-updates/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu21 0 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages $ lsusb Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:c01d Logitech, Inc. [Bug 394940] [NEW] g++ does not produce valid precompiled headers
Public bug reported: Source package: gcc-defaults Problem: g++ 4.2 and 4.3 does not produce valid precompiled headers. To reproduce: $ g++ --version g++ (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4) 4.3.3 $ cat pch.h #include $ g++ -c -x c++ -MT pch.h.gch -MD -MP -MF pch.h.dep -o pch.h.gch -O3 -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -W -Wall -Werror -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -msse2 pch.h $ file pch.h.gch pch.h.gch: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped The above is incorrect; it is almost as though g++ missed the -c option and tried to link the header file (or something like that?) Of course, trying to use this header fails: $ cat foo.cpp #include "pch.h" $ g++ -c -o foo.o -O3 -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -W -Wall -Werror -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -Winvalid-pch -msse2 foo.cpp foo.cpp:1:17: error: pch.h.gch: not a PCH file The above problems also occur with g++-4.2: $ g++-4.2 --version g++-4.2 (GCC) 4.2.4 (Ubuntu 4.2.4-5ubuntu1) However, if I install g++-4.1, everything works as expected: $ g++-4.1 -c -x c++ -MT pch.h.gch -MD -MP -MF pch.h.dep -o pch.h.gch -O3 -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -W -Wall -Werror -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -msse2 pch.h $ file pch.h.gch pch.h.gch: GCC precompiled header (version 013) for C++ $ g++-4.1 -c -o foo.o -O3 -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -W -Wall -Werror -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -Winvalid-pch -msse2 foo.cpp $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 9.04 Release:9.04 $ apt-cache policy g++ g++: Installed: 4:4.3.3-1ubuntu1 Candidate: 4:4.3.3-1ubuntu1 Version table: *** 4:4.3.3-1ubuntu1 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status $ apt-cache policy g++-4.2 g++-4.2: Installed: 4.2.4-5ubuntu1 Candidate: 4.2.4-5ubuntu1 Version table: *** 4.2.4-5ubuntu1 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/universe Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status $ apt-cache policy g++-4.1 g++-4.1: Installed: 4.1.2-24ubuntu1 Candidate: 4.1.2-24ubuntu1 Version table: *** 4.1.2-24ubuntu1 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/universe Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status $ uname -s -r -v -m -o Linux 2.6.28-13-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 2 07:55:09 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: g++ -- g++ does not produce valid precompiled headers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/394940 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 155483] Re: emacs22-gtk and emacs22-x do not display menus
It's the emacs-extra package: $ grep -C 3 bar-mode /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/emacs-extra/emacs-extra.el (defun down-a-lot () (interactive) (scroll-down)) (global-set-key [C-mouse-4] 'down-a-lot) (global-set-key [C-mouse-5] 'up-a-lot) (menu-bar-mode nil) (set-scroll-bar-mode nil) (when (>= emacs-major-version 21) (tool-bar-mode -1) (blink-cursor-mode nil) (require 'zone) (setq zone-idle 300) This toggles the menu bar and the scroll bar, and turns off the tool bar when emacs-major-version is greater than 21. It also turns on zone, which was another nasty surprise after the upgrade (when zone kicks in, my laptop heats up to about 7000C). Attached is a proposed patch. ** Attachment added: "Turn on the menu-bar, tool-bar, and scrollbar; do *not* turn on zone mode." http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10162755/emacs-extra-menu-mode.patch -- emacs22-gtk and emacs22-x do not display menus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/155483 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 78369] Evince does not print a particular PDF properly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evince evince cannot print the following PDF: http://www.networkwestmidlands.com/DirectDebit/Direct%20Debit%20form%2007.pdf It does print properly using GNOME PDF Viewer and Adobe Acrobat. No output on the console, but this appears in /var/log/syslog: Jan 7 22:39:18 localhost hpiod: unable to write data hp:/usb/DeskJet_895C?serial=MX92C1W0N7FB: Resource temporarily unavailable io/hpiod/channel.cpp 63 Jan 7 22:39:18 localhost DeskJet_895C?serial=MX92C1W0N7FB: INFO: check device; will retry in 30 seconds... The printer then halts, and I have to power cycle it to get the paper out. The output consists of a few centimetres of barely recognizable garbage. On my HP Photosmart 8150 the results are similar, but the printer never actually prints anything... it just seems to hang. I'm on up-to-date edgy: $ dpkg-query -l evince Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name VersionDescription +++-==-==- ii evince 0.6.1-0ubuntu1 Document (postscript, pdf) viewer ** Affects: evince (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Evince does not print a particular PDF properly https://launchpad.net/bugs/78369 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 53102] Re: ext3 partitions are getting corrupt more often than they should
** Description changed: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-26-686 - One an approximately weekly basis, at least one of my ext3 partitions on + On an approximately weekly basis, at least one of my ext3 partitions on one of my many disks will become corrupt, remounted as read-only, and require repairs. This is an alarmingly high failure rate. I was reluctant to log this bug but now that it has occurred on different disks on various occasions I can't dismiss it as a bad drive. This began shortly after the upgrade to 2.6.15-26. Before that, no problems (that I can recall). + + [Edit: Cleaned up some typos] ** Tags added: corruption ext3 -- ext3 partitions are getting corrupt more often than they should https://launchpad.net/bugs/53102 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 49392] Re: rt2500 wireless adapter unable to obtain IP address
Now network-manager refuses to start up. This started happening after the latest kernel update, but could be a case of post hoc reasoning. According to strace output (which I'll attach), it constantly polls some file descriptor (14, in this case), which always returns "EAGAIN". -- rt2500 wireless adapter unable to obtain IP address https://launchpad.net/bugs/49392 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 49392] Re: rt2500 wireless adapter unable to obtain IP address
Success. I was able to obtain an IP address for my wireless card (using stock rt2500 driver in the latest kernel) by adding wireless-essid rtswireless wireless-key to /etc/network/interfaces All previous attempts were using the ASCII key. So, the bugs are now: - Why doesn't ASCII key work? - Why doesn't network manager manage my wireless interface anymore? -- rt2500 wireless adapter unable to obtain IP address https://launchpad.net/bugs/49392 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 49392] Re: rt2500 wireless adapter unable to obtain IP address
I'm not so sure this is an rt2500 driver problem anymore. I found an old cvs tarball that I had used successfully under Breezy, compiled and installed it, and I still can't get an IP address for my wireless device. The latest kernel did not help; in fact, it seems to have made things slightly worse... now the nm-applet won't let me configure wireless at all (though command-line tools like ifup, iwconfig, etc. still seem to not work in the same way as before... hope you unserstand what I mean). -- rt2500 wireless adapter unable to obtain IP address https://launchpad.net/bugs/49392 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
