[Bug 822486] Re: Mouse and keyboard no longer work after upgrading to 11.04

2011-08-10 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
(Copied from
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11139820#post11139820)

Here's how I solved this problem:

Boot the 11.04 Live CD.

Switch to a terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F1.

Follow these instructions to mount your HD and get all the necessary
/dev entries in a chroot enviornment:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-...e-from-livecd/

Next, edit /etc/default/grub and comment out the line
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0

Run update-grub

Reboot. Now the SHIFT key *will* bring up the grub menu; hold SHIFT
after your BIOS POST.

Select an older kernel. For me, 2.6.38-8 worked.

Your keyboard should now work. Go and do an update with the update
manager to get the latest kernel.

Edit /etc/default/grub and put the line GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 back in.
Run update-grub. Reboot.

Worked for me. Your mileage may vary.

[Bug 822486] [NEW] Mouse and keyboard no longer work after upgrading to 11.04

2011-08-07 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Public bug reported:

This computer worked perfectly with 10.10.

After upgrading to 11.04 today the mouse and keyboard no longer work.
At the login screen, I am unable to do anything: Holding SHIFT or ESC
during boot does not bring up the GRUB menu; Ctrl-Alt-Fn does not switch
to a terminal; nothing works. Plugging them into different USB slots
doesn't work.

However, I am typing this with no problem from the Live CD, so I know it
is not a hardware problem. Also the keyboard works fine in the BIOS
settings screens. But once the kernel boots, not even the Caps Lock
light works.

Comparing (what I believe to be) relevant files between what's on my
hard drive and what this Live CD is using reveals no interesting
differences.

I have found other reports of this problem (e.g.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11129795) but did not find any
relevant bug reports or solution anywhere.

[Bug 696690] [NEW] pulse sometimes fails to initialise with webcam (w/ USB mic) plugged in.

2011-01-02 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Booting up, or resuming from suspend, pulse will very often (though not
always) fail to initialize if a webcam with a USB mic is plugged in.
This behavior was never observed with 10.04 and is new since upgrading
to 10.10.

With a Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 webcam plugged in, this appears in
/var/log/user.log:

pulseaudio[2310]: module.c: Failed to load  module "module-alsa-card"
(argument: "device_id="1" name="usb-046d_08c5_7F4AED81-02-U0x46d0x8c5"
card_name="alsa_card.usb-046d_08c5_7F4AED81-02-U0x46d0x8c5" tsched=yes
ignore_dB=no card_properties="module-udev-detect.discovered=1""):
initialization failed.

Pulse will continue to fail until the webcam is unplugged, at which
point (or shortly thereafter) pulse will successfully start up.

Once pulse is initialized, I can reconnect the webcam and it functions
properly (both video and the microphone).

[Bug 489872] Re: [ASUSTeK Computer INC. 1000] /resume failure

2010-04-23 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Hi Jeremy

I don't remember when exactly, but some kernel update solved that
problem (the laptop is now running 2.6.31-20-generic). I haven't had a
failed resume in a long time.

So, feel free to close.

Thanks.

[Bug 394940] Re: g++ does not produce valid precompiled headers

2009-12-29 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
> is this reproducible with gcc-4.4/gcc-snapshot from karmic and lucid?

Yes (for 4.4.1 anyways):

$ g++ --version
g++ (Ubuntu 4.4.1-4ubuntu8) 4.4.1

$ cat > pch.h
#include

$ g++ -c -x c++ -MT pch.h.gch -MD -MP -MF pch.h.dep -o pch.h.gch -O3
-fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -W -Wall
-Werror -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -msse2 pch.h

$ file pch.h.gch
pch.h.gch: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped

The problem seems to be the -x switch:

$ g++ -c -x c++ -o pch.h.gch  pch.h
$ file pch.h.gch
pch.h.gch: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped

$ g++ -c  -o pch.h.gch  pch.h
$ file pch.h.gch
pch.h.gch: GCC precompiled header (version 013) for C++

  -x Specify the language of the following input files
   Permissible languages include: c c++ assembler none
   'none' means revert to the default behavior of
   guessing the language based on the file's extension

[Bug 394940] [NEW] g++ does not produce valid precompiled headers

2009-07-02 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Public bug reported:

Source package: gcc-defaults

Problem:

g++ 4.2 and 4.3 does not produce valid precompiled headers. To
reproduce:

$ g++ --version
g++ (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4) 4.3.3

$ cat pch.h
#include

$ g++ -c -x c++ -MT pch.h.gch -MD -MP -MF pch.h.dep -o pch.h.gch -O3
-fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -W -Wall
-Werror -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -msse2 pch.h

$ file pch.h.gch
pch.h.gch: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped

The above is incorrect; it is almost as though g++ missed the -c option
and tried to link the header file (or something like that?) Of course,
trying to use this header fails:

$ cat foo.cpp
#include "pch.h"

$ g++ -c -o foo.o -O3 -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -ffunction-sections
-fdata-sections -W -Wall -Werror -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -Winvalid-pch -msse2
foo.cpp
foo.cpp:1:17: error: pch.h.gch: not a PCH file

The above problems also occur with g++-4.2:

$ g++-4.2 --version
g++-4.2 (GCC) 4.2.4 (Ubuntu 4.2.4-5ubuntu1)

However, if I install g++-4.1, everything works as expected:

$ g++-4.1 -c -x c++ -MT pch.h.gch -MD -MP -MF pch.h.dep -o pch.h.gch -O3
-fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -W -Wall
-Werror -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -msse2 pch.h

$ file pch.h.gch
pch.h.gch: GCC precompiled header (version 013) for C++

$ g++-4.1 -c -o foo.o -O3 -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -ffunction-sections
-fdata-sections -W -Wall -Werror -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -Winvalid-pch -msse2
foo.cpp

[Bug 175643] Re: Heavy samba usage causes kernel OOPs

2007-12-18 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Here is a list of things I've tried to get around this... none helped:

- Unplugged discs from the motherboard and plugged them into the Adaptec
controller
- Installed a different NIC (Intel 82541PI Gigabit), shutting off the one on
the motherboard
- Switched all partitions from xfs to ext3

Any ideas on how to get this thing stable are greatly appreciated.

Sorry, hit commit too soon.

The commonalities with that linux-kernel bug report are:

- We both have SMP systems

samba  3.0.26a-1ubuntu2.2

1) Share your home directory with a WinXP machine. Say your home directory is
mounted as Z: on the WinXP machine.
2) Sync a very large Perforce depot on to Z:. This is usually enough.
3) If the sync succeeds, build a very large Visual Studio project via Z:. This
will certainly kill it.

Now, I had a similar problem with Fedora Core 8 (see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=419911), so this is either:

- a common kernel bug
- a hardware issue

The hardware is a brand new quad core machine.

[Bug 155483] Re: emacs22-gtk and emacs22-x do not display menus

2007-10-24 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
It's the emacs-extra package:

$ grep -C 3 bar-mode /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/emacs-extra/emacs-extra.el
(defun down-a-lot () (interactive) (scroll-down))
(global-set-key [C-mouse-4] 'down-a-lot)
(global-set-key [C-mouse-5] 'up-a-lot)
(menu-bar-mode nil)
(set-scroll-bar-mode nil)
(when (>= emacs-major-version 21)
  (tool-bar-mode -1)
  (blink-cursor-mode nil)
  (require 'zone)
  (setq zone-idle 300)

This toggles the menu bar and the scroll bar, and turns off the tool bar when
emacs-major-version is greater than 21.

It also turns on zone, which was another nasty surprise after the
upgrade (when zone kicks in, my laptop heats up to about 7000C).

Attached is a proposed patch.

** Attachment added: "Turn on the menu-bar, tool-bar, and scrollbar; do *not*

[Bug 155483] Re: emacs22-gtk and emacs22-x do not display menus

2007-10-22 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
It seems somewhere something in /etc/emacs/site-start.d/ is now hiding
the menu bar, scroll bar and tool bar.

I had to set these variables in my .emacs to get these things back.

'(menu-bar-mode t)
'(scroll-bar-mode (quote left))
'(speedbar-frame-parameters (quote ((minibuffer) (width . 20) (border-width .
0) (menu-bar-lines . 0) (tool-bar-lines . 0) (unsplittable . t)
(set-background-color "black"
'(tool-bar-mode t))

[Bug 155483] Re: emacs22-gtk and emacs22-x do not display menus

2007-10-22 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
In the screenshot you see there is no menu ("File", "Edit", etc...) nor
menu bar (icons that represent "open file", "save file", etc).

The menu does appear very briefly while Emacs is "booting up".

[Bug 121966] PS3 Fiesty: Running X Windows on a system with huge tables enabled causes massive disc thrashing

2007-06-24 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Public bug reported:

On an up-to-date install of Feisty on PS3, enable huge tables with:

mkdir -p /huge
echo 10 > /proc/sys/vm/nr_hugepages
mount -t hugetlbfs nodev /huge
chown root:root /huge
chmod 777 /huge

When X (or the Gnome session) starts, the hard disc will begin
thrashing, top reports 99% CPU time spent waiting for IO completion, and
the system grinds to a halt.

Disabling X (ie, booting into console mode) with huge tables enabled no
such behaviour is observed (huge tables work, no disc thrashing).

[Bug 78369] Re: Evince does not print a particular PDF properly

2007-04-06 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
I have another PDF that does not print correctly with evince, but does
print properly with other PDF applications.

Unfortunately, this is my tax return, so I can't share it. :)

[Bug 49396] Re: Suspend does not work on my laptop (Dapper)

2007-02-10 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Any attempts to suspend with an up-to-date Edgy install on this laptop
result in the screen just locking. When I unlock with my password, a
pop-up informs me that suspend failed.

So, at least I don't need to reboot.

Just this (that I know of). Like I said, it prints fine with Gnome PDF
Viewer and Adobe Acrobat.

[Bug 78369] Evince does not print a particular PDF properly

2007-01-07 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

evince cannot print the following PDF:

http://www.networkwestmidlands.com/DirectDebit/Direct%20Debit%20form%2007.pdf

It does print properly using GNOME PDF Viewer and Adobe Acrobat.

No output on the console, but this appears in /var/log/syslog:

Jan 7 22:39:18 localhost hpiod: unable to write data
hp:/usb/DeskJet_895C?serial=MX92C1W0N7FB: Resource temporarily unavailable
io/hpiod/channel.cpp 63
Jan  7 22:39:18 localhost DeskJet_895C?serial=MX92C1W0N7FB: INFO: check device;
will retry in 30 seconds...

The printer then halts, and I have to power cycle it to get the paper out. The
output consists of a few centimetres of barely recognizable garbage.

On my HP Photosmart 8150 the results are similar, but the printer never
actually prints anything... it just seems to hang.

I'm on up-to-date edgy:

+ On an approximately weekly basis, at least one of my ext3 partitions on
  one of my many disks will become corrupt, remounted as read-only, and
  require repairs. This is an alarmingly high failure rate.

  I was reluctant to log this bug but now that it has occurred on
  different disks on various occasions I can't dismiss it as a bad drive.

  This began shortly after the upgrade to 2.6.15-26. Before that, no

[Bug 49392] Re: rt2500 wireless adapter unable to obtain IP address

2006-07-23 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Now network-manager refuses to start up. This started happening after
the latest kernel update, but could be a case of post hoc reasoning.

According to strace output (which I'll attach), it constantly polls some
file descriptor (14, in this case), which always returns "EAGAIN".

Using the nv driver actually performs worse; upon (attempted) resume,
the Caps Lock key does nothing, indicating dead kernel and/or X.

[Bug 49392] Re: rt2500 wireless adapter unable to obtain IP address

2006-06-17 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
Success.

I was able to obtain an IP address for my wireless card (using stock
rt2500 driver in the latest kernel) by adding

wireless-essid rtswireless
wireless-key

to /etc/network/interfaces

All previous attempts were using the ASCII key.

So, the bugs are now:

- Why doesn't ASCII key work?
- Why doesn't network manager manage my wireless interface anymore?

[Bug 49392] Re: rt2500 wireless adapter unable to obtain IP address

2006-06-17 Thread Ryan T. Sammartino
I'm not so sure this is an rt2500 driver problem anymore. I found an
old cvs tarball that I had used successfully under Breezy, compiled and
installed it, and I still can't get an IP address for my wireless
device. Perhaps the problem is elsewhere?

The latest kernel did not help; in fact, it seems to have made things
slightly worse... now the nm-applet won't let me configure wireless at
all (though command-line tools like ifup, iwconfig, etc. still seem to
not work in the same way as before... hope you unserstand what I mean).

I don't know how to answer that. Here is the output from iwconfig ra0:

Although if I run it again the ESSID will change to my neighbour's
