James

Your description is very vague, this aren't patches it's just the latest
Linux kernel. If you found errors related to this i think u can post
them here, but if they're another stuff you should open a new bug.

2012-07-13 Thread cgonzalez
I think you should get a beta of Ubuntu 12.10 - Quantal Quetzal

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

When it boots add the boot parameter

i915.invert_brightness=1

Install and then make the parameter permanent (as described on my
previous post).

If it works u can tell us...

2012-07-13 Thread cgonzalez
I know, i love Linux like most people from here, i participated a lot
send notices to Kamal about any update i found on the net, but it's very
sad that a bug that may have a lot of people frustrated with using
Ubuntu (and Linux in general), this kind of stuff must be critical at
the beginning not where someone find a solution.

2012-07-13 Thread cgonzalez
Now you mark this as critical, has been two long years living with this
f...er.

Anyway the user still have to add the kernel parameter
"i915.invert_brightness=1" to boot with a correct brightness. Maybe there's
some way to auto detect this chips and enable it by default.

[Bug 765438] Re: On startup, the backlight is off on laptop

2012-06-27 Thread cgonzalez
Has been 2 years, but now i found a solutionfor my emachines e725

here is kernel 3.5 rc 4 with all the i915 patches (i think):

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5-rc4-quantal/

install all the needed packages acording to your architectures i386 or amd64,
for example for amd64:
dkpg -i

linux-headers-3.5.0-030500rc4-generic_3.5.0-030500rc4.201206241635_amd64.deb
linux-headers-3.5.0-030500rc4_3.5.0-030500rc4.201206241635_all.deb

linux-image-3.5.0-030500rc4-generic_3.5.0-030500rc4.201206241635_amd64.deb

linux-image-extra-3.5.0-030500rc4-generic_3.5.0-030500rc4.201206241635_amd64.deb

then you have to add to kernel boot parameters:

acpi_backlight=vendor
i915.invert_brightness=1

you can make them permant by editing /etc/default/grub , editing this
line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor
i915.invert_brightness=1"

then run:

update-grub2

now you have your brightness working as on kernel 2.6-idontremember...

this patches has been liying around for a couple of months is a shame that no
one from the canonical team, test them and create a ppa...

Currently i'm running rc9 and also tested the 3.1.0-999.201110171146

i can only control the brightness with the parameter
acpi_backlight=vendor, and also the backlight control is inverted.

[Bug 207749] Re: Compaq Presario F500 nvidia problem in Hardy

2008-04-28 Thread cgonzalez
Ok

I solved IT, installing the latest drivers won't work either

i have to roll back to the 100.14.19 drivers, these seems to be working fine,
no garbled consoles (i don't have a system hangs yet either)

firstly uninistall the ubuntu nvidia driver in the restricted hardware
app...

the follow this guide to clean the system(
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490 )

If you wish to install the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver on a Debian
GNU/Linux or Ubuntu system that ships with Xorg 7.x, please ensure that
your system meets the following requirements:

* development tools like make and gcc are installed
* the linux-headers package matching the installed Linux kernel is installed
* the pkg-config and xserver-xorg-dev packages are installed
* the nvidia-glx package has been uninstalled with the --purge option and
the files /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx and /etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel do not exist

If you use Ubuntu, please also ensure that the linux-restricted-modules
or linux-restricted-modules-common packages have been uninstalled.
Alternatively, you can edit the /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules or
/etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common configuration file and
disable the NVIDIA linux-restricted kernel modules (nvidia,
nvidia_legacy) via:

DISABLED_MODULES="nv nvidia_new"

Additionally, delete the following file if it exists:

/lib/linux-restricted-modules/.nvidia_new_installed

Now donwload this drivers set
(http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_100.14.19.html)

go to the console (crtl-alt-f1)

stop gdm
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

go to the driver download folder, and do

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1.run

don't donwload the kernel modules, compile it ... reboot and Voila

another nvidia nightmare solved for me

I have the same case here, in 3 presario f564la notebooks.

Consoles with garbled graphics, xorg working fine, but when the computer

Some times the laptops just hangs, i have to power off manually...i
don't see nothing in the logs, maybe is nvidia related too

[Bug 207749] [NEW] Compaq Presario F500 nvidia problem in Hardy

2008-03-27 Thread cgonzalez
Public bug reported:

Hi

I think some thing got broken in hardy, i have two notebooks compaq
presario F500 MODEL F64LA

they are the same model but in the bios they show two different uuid (i
don't know what it mean)

GN282LA#ABM
GN282LA#30D3

The proprietary nvidia (nvidia-glx-new) driver was working fine in 7.04 and
7.10. But 8.04 beta it show graphics corruption when
switching to console (crtl-alt-f1 ...) and when shutting down X. The corruption
appears only after when the nvidia drivers are loaded-

Sometimes if you switch back to X, the systems just hangs. i have to
power off the computer.

When i tried to use vga=792 (and other different modes) other strange
things happends, firstly they show the ubuntu logo but not in the center
off screen, the logo was in the upper left corner, and when switching to
console no characters was visible, just a blank screen with the flashing
cursor. The cursor moves normally i can type text and the console seems
to be working.
