[Bug 109550] Re: Black/unrendered windows in Beryl

2007-04-25 Thread flowingfire
Just a quick update: I did get the black box issue to stop in KDE with
the tip you gave. I started application after application and no black
boxes appeared. Performance of beryl is notably suckier, but it's a
small price to pay to rid myself of the blacked-out applications of
death.

So it's not just gnome your tip works in. Interestingly, I was sort of
able to reproduce the problem, but it wasn't quite the same. I got a
white box in Firefox with, like, 5 other instances open. So I don't
know what to make of that But the situation is vastly improved.

Thanks again for the tip.

[Bug 109550] Re: Black/unrendered windows in Beryl

2007-04-25 Thread flowingfire
I just wanted to thank you for being so articulate about the problem,
where others have been skimpier on the details. I too have this problem
and hope to see it's root-cause fixed. I love operating in beryl and
can't stand that black boxes hamper life at times.

These black boxes are about as welcome as the blue screen of death was
in Windows 98. :)

I'm operating Beryl in a KDE environment, so I don't know if your fix
will work, but I intend to try it out right now! I'm actually quite
excited to read it, because I'm getting sick of my AbiWord documents and
Firefox windows turning black. Ugh!

Peace.

[Bug 107372] Re: window turns black after minimize and maximize

2007-04-25 Thread flowingfire
I also have the window blacking out problem with beryl installed. Could
it be a problem with Nvidia cards? I have a GeForce 6150. Also, I'm
operating in KDE and not Gnome. My blackouts often happen when
opening something new, minimizing and maximizing, and having several
things open at once. All programs are fair game, though Firefox seems
to be the favorite application to suffer.

I discovered that shrinking the window size sometimes fixes the problem
too... but that's only sometimes.

I would think I don't have enough RAM installed, but I have 2 GIGS!!!
Shouldn't that be enough? I think I have sufficient video memory, too,
but I suppose the GeForce 6150 is kinda skimpy in that area... dunno

[Bug 104482] Re: Black screened windows after a while

2007-04-25 Thread flowingfire
I confirm that this problem happens to me also. On two different
installations of Kubuntu with Beryl Emerald, I had my applications turn
into big black boxes eventually. It seems like I can only have one or
two things open and visible. Then, everything else is a black box. For
example, a new instance of firefox or a text document or a AbiWord
document. Anything is game for getting blacked-out randomly.

I still have beryl installed, because I am a sucker for asthetics... But
it's really hampering my productivity.

[Bug 109199] Re: [nvidia-glx-new] Kubuntu Login "Slides Around the Screen" at 1280x1024 + 3 other errors with NVIDIA GeForce 6150

2007-04-25 Thread flowingfire
** Description changed:

The login screen is not static on my computer at startup or on any login
after a log-out. If I move my mouse to the side, the whole screen
slides over to that direction. There are four specific and related
errors that I will cover in this post.

  My system and hardware:
I'm running Kubuntu 7.04 feisty fawn. My graphics card is NVIDIA GEforce
6150. The resolution I have my card set at is 1280x1024, optimal for my
monitor. Processor: AMD 64.

- Problem 1: The login screen slides around. I move the mouse, the whole
screen moves, login fields and all.
- Problem 2: If I log out, the mouse disappears completely when I log back in.
I have to blindly wander my way around hoping the invisible mouse is somehow
over what I want to click. This is on EVERY logout-login. A complete restart
is necessary to undo this problem.
- Problem 3: The original out-of-the-box NVIDIA setup would not let my NVIDIA
6150 display beyond 800x600. Installing an NVIDIA package from ADEPT fixed the
problem promptly, but then all these errors start happening.
- Problem 4: When I click "test," in the display settings area, it gets stuck,
requiring a restart. All unsaved data lost.
+ Problem 1: The login screen slides around. I move the mouse, the whole

+ Problem 2: The original out-of-the-box NVIDIA setup would not let my NVIDIA

+ Problem 4: Perhaps unrelated, if I log out, the mouse disappears completely
when I log back in. I have to blindly wander my way around hoping the
invisible mouse is somehow over what I want to click. This is on EVERY
logout-login. A complete restart is necessary to undo this problem. (Please
note that this stopped happening any longer when I deleted the "virtual"
keyword from xorg.conf. I have no idea what that has to do with anything, but
now I have a mouse on login.)
+
+ NEW ADDITION: Also, it's notable that after I removed the "virtual"
+ keyword from xorg.conf, the login screen still slid around but not as
+ much.

I re-installed the first time this happened. After the re-installation,
all the same problems happened again, indicating to me that this is a
consistent bug that needs to be worked out.

Honestly, this release is so buggy I don't know what to do with it. I
like it enough to put up with the bugs, I guess... But please fix.

2007-04-25 Thread flowingfire
I deleted the "Virtual 1920 1440" line from xorg.conf. Unfortunately,
the login screen -still- slides around. It just doesn't slide quite as
much anymore-- it stops at a closer edge. Also, notably, the
disappearing mouse problem stopped happening. Related? Who knows. But
I think since all these errors happened together, I want to put them
here. And since one of your solutions fixed one of the seemingly
unrelated problems... well, you catch the drift... It seems like
deleting that line "half" fixed the problem, as sliding is still an
issue.

Of course, I understand that it's necessary to make sure one problem is
addressed at a time.

Honestly, I'm totally new to this Linux thing, and am hoping to replace
my Windows desktop. I don't even know what a restricted-manager is! I
just went into Adept Manager, because it seemed like the right thing to
do and selected the new Nvidia driver package, then installed it. Then
my screen actually lined up correctly at the right resolution. Yay.

I've learned the basics of the terminal quickly, but I also have busted
2 prior installations of Kubuntu. One time, I tried to install Java and
it broke all sorts of things rendering the operating system unusable.
Another time, I screwed up xorg.conf. Now, in my third installation, I
seem to have Beryl-Emerald, Kubuntu, and my Nvidia card talking to each-
other nicely... But my applications black out all the time I say
all this, because Ubuntu is advertised as basically for the common
user Uhh, I don't think so. I feel like I've stretched myself for
this OS, and I'm still getting nowhere ugh!

Public bug reported:

I am running Kubuntu 7.04 feisty fawn with NVIDIA Geforce 6150 graphics
set to 1280x1024. Processor: AMD 64 (4400+). Monitor: NEC Multisync 90

[Bug 109199] Kubuntu Login "Slides Around the Screen" at 1280x1024 + 3 other errors with NVIDIA GeForce 6150

2007-04-23 Thread flowingfire
Public bug reported:

The login screen is not static on my computer at startup or on any login
after a log-out. If I move my mouse to the side, the whole screen
slides over to that direction. There are four specific and related
errors that I will cover in this post.

My system and hardware:
I'm running Kubuntu 7.04 feisty fawn. My graphics card is NVIDIA GEforce 6150.
The resolution I have my card set at is 1280x1024, optimal for my monitor.
Processor: AMD 64.

Problem 1: The login screen slides around. I move the mouse, the whole screen
moves, login fields and all.
Problem 2: If I log out, the mouse disappears completely when I log back in. I
have to blindly wander my way around hoping the invisible mouse is somehow over
what I want to click. This is on EVERY logout-login. A complete restart is
necessary to undo this problem.
Problem 3: The original out-of-the-box NVIDIA setup would not let my NVIDIA
6150 display beyond 800x600. Installing an NVIDIA package from ADEPT fixed the
problem promptly, but then all these errors start happening.
Problem 4: When I click "test," in the display settings area, it gets stuck,
requiring a restart. All unsaved data lost.

Thank you for the support,
-New Kubuntu User who is hoping Linux is all it's cracked up to be.
