[ubuntu-in] question about gradual slow down in Ubuntu system
Hi recently ran a live version of simplymepis to see what it looked like it booted quickly and ran through its load up of KDE very fast , working on it was quite good to - ran multiple operations - word processor, spreadsheet, internet a music player etc. Sometimes the system would slow down , i guess waiting for the cd to catch up with the commands. this is on my laptop which is running Ubuntu 8.10. I am finding that ubuntu is slow to boot up and when i open multiple functions the CPU usage goes up like crazy - on of the dual cores reaches 100 % and the average is very high - like 40 - 50 % (when i noticed) generally things seem slow. RAM is about 1.5 GB and Swap is 2.8 GB Processor Dual Core t2400 at 1.83 MHz. hard Disk is pretty full at about 90 + % *** My root is about 75% used (5.3 GB used). I won't say i have extraordinary amounts of software installed. My desktop use bars have a fair bit of icons on them, my desktop is medium clean ( i know in windows things slow down when the desktop is stuffed but thought that is not a problem in Linux) *** When i use openoffice (version 3) sometimes when some specific functions are happening the system almost freezes - like when pasting images into writer, or pasting a section of a web page - with links etc, or when i am manually scrolling and selecting cells in calc spreadsheet. ** Am wondering if anyone else has seen / felt such slowdowns and what could be the causes. Also what can be done to improve speeds. ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Hi Just an additional solution for folks who want to count both numbers and text in a series in open office calc =COUNT(C1:C9) + COUNTIF(C1:C9,">*") seems to do the trick. the first counts only number and the second counts only text entries and both then get added up to give one figure hope some one else finds this useful regards ram ramnaraya...@gmail.com wrote: > Hi > > Am posting something related to openoffice ( have already posted to > openoffice forum and done a google search, and am still to find a > solution so am posting here as well, in case someone can help. > > Query is regarding counting random text in a series - i just need to > know how many cells in a series have any text or number entry > > Eg i have rows with entries like NL1 NL2 till say NL 36 > another row with another set like LL1 to LL60 and then NIC1 NIC2 etc > > so each row has multiple text entries (not same) > > i need to do one thing basically - from a series find how many of the > cells has any entry in them (text or numbers) > > to find how many have a particular text seems easy i use the funtion > =COUNTIF(C19:C26,"FOO") and this seems to count the number of entries > with foo > > but i want to know how to count for any random text > have tried *.* , simply . etc no operator seems to work > > any ideas tips. > > I tried searching but have not got any positive links > > thanks > ram > -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
[ubuntu-in] Color Templates in Ubuntu (openoffice
Hi) There are a lot of color sub tools in open office - like highlight, background, font color etc etc The problem is the colors are very limited, i think its possible to add colors but thats a time consuming process and second if you upgrade then these colors are lost I have posted a similar query on openoffice forum but know that individual distro makers also fiddle with the color template (which is why we get ubuntu reds browns and oranges) so am wondering if there is a easier way to add colors to the various sub tools in openoffice. thanks ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
[ubuntu-in] error while booting
Hi Just a while back i got an error while booting up. I tried to note down the entire error message was but have missed parts of it - what i have is here There was a message gdm failed to load because of some ??? Its related to my /dev/sda7 partition which happens to be my root section Further it seems that my /tmp had become write only and logs could not be written to this section. so i ran fsck from the root terminal that popped up after all the error messages Anyway some of the error message that i wrote down were Unexpected inconsistency , run fsck without -a -p, manually after which i got a whole lots of questions entry linc-6d75-0-12bf 7c 998e14a in /tmp/orbit-ram (73388) has deleted unused inode 74681 fix (y) Block bitmap difference (216067 - 216073) etc etc Fix (Y) free block count wrong from group 6# (4519 counted = 4528) fix (Y) above message came for blocks 9 and 10 similar messages about Directories Count etc all fixed at the end it said in caps "FILE SYSTEM MODIFIED" then on trying to reboot it got stuck with messages in red "Failed to load authorization key /root/.plse-cookie read only file system" /tmp read only file system It then came back to a blue screen with a long message again saying GDM failed to start x server - so panicking i tried to switch to a different terminal and reboot which i did with sudo shutdown -r now and it rebooted back normally. *** So what could have happened and where can i find the error logs / startup logs if any what diagnostics can i fun *** I let Ubuntu run its automatic fsck every once in a way which it does Recently installed kde but have not changed my desktop manager from gdm to kdm (as yet) *** would be grateful for advice thanks ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
[ubuntu-in] OT: Help in Openoffice (how to count text in series)

Query is regarding counting random text in a series - i just need to know how many cells in a series have any text or number entry Eg i have rows with entries like NL1 NL2 till say NL 36 another row with another set like LL1 to LL60 and then NIC1 NIC2 etc so each row has multiple text entries (not same) i need to do one thing basically - from a series find how many of the cells has any entry in them (text or numbers) to find how many have a particular text seems easy i use the funtion =COUNTIF(C19:C26,"FOO") and this seems to count the number of entries with foo but i want to know how to count for any random text have tried *.* , simply . etc no operator seems to work any ideas tips. [ubuntu-in] Problem with open files while shutting down
Hi have been noticing a problem if files are open when a computer is shutdown. Now, am not sure what used to happen earlier but 'thought' that if files were open and shutdown was implemented the OS asked what to do with open files esp. indicating if a file(s) was in unsaved condition and continued with shutdown only after the open files unsaved files were attended to. However, now , Ubuntu just shuts down a computer without asking what to do with the open files and the next time we start up and try and open a particular file, it says 'try and recover the file(s)' (only for open Openoffice files) am not sure what it does to other files. [ubuntu-in] What software do you like -
Hi For sometime have been meaning to write about some software that we use and really like and sharing it with others. There was a discussion on the Ubuntu forum (global) but thats many pages long but felt we could do with something similar sharing here. So here's my first contribution CATALOGING SOFTWARE: (FOR INDEXING / ARCHIVING) Had searched for a long time for a piece of software that would index my various Hard Disks, CD's DVD's etc for a few reasons: 1. to make it easy to track down elusive files without having to insert / attach each individual disk / media. 2. as a kind of time line snapshot. 3. To share information of commonly accessible disks 4. As a lightweight backup - atleast we know what we lost ;-) 5. To help sort , find duplicates and manage 6. Helps in remote management - esp to help people find stuff they don't know they have on their computer. So the search too me to many different software gwhere, gtktalog and *cdcat* for me gtktalog did not work - something wrong with the graphics ghwere worked but the archive files it made were very big and a big problem was one cannot add to an existing catalog or archive - *cdcat* is what i am using now *cdcat* can be installed through synaptic - its available in the universe repository of Ubuntu. cdcat - it needs to be started up from command line but once it starts up it works really well - the files it produces are in .hcf format , one can export and well as import ( a feature lacking in gwhere) The archive file size it produces are much smaller than gwhere's. The beauty of cdcat is its fairly simple interface - very quick to index as well as in searching. Once you make a Catalog you can keep adding to it or rescanning the same media. You can edit comments for each category / media (node as they call it) Its got a nice search function - after a few uses one gets used to it and it makes it easy to find stuff. It automatically shows up hidden folders (like when you scan your /home/user folder it contains a lot of hidden stuff including .Trash, so it makes you know what you have ) gwhere does not allow you to search for iso files - which may not be a big thing but is a drawback. cdcat allows you to search a location for saved catalogs and asks you where to store a saved catalog - this is good because you can keep your archives in a obvious place and make it part of regular back ups. It allows you to maintain a lending library of sorts, so you can keep track of what you have lent someone. A few drawbacks of cdcat are - it does not get added to you applications menu - you have to make a "launcher" or run it from a terminal. It doesn't allow you to set a default file path - so you have to manually navigate to the location where the catalog files are stored (or are to be saved) All in all cdcat is part of my essential ubuntu package. ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

[ubuntu-in] OT: Something to think about (Ethical Man is reborn)
Off topic, but relevant in a larger context, I apologize in advance for posting this article to the Ubuntu List. *** Ethical Man is reborn http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/ethicalman/2009/02/ethical_man_is_reborn.html We all know the green mantras. Change your lightbulbs, recycle, fly less, buy a hybrid car, turn down the thermostat. The list goes on and on. ethicalman_logo203blog.jpg But here's the rub. On their own they are never going to be enough to stop global warming. I know it is green heresy but it is true. How do I know? Because I am the BBC's Ethical Man and my family and I spent a year doing everything we could think of to reduce our carbon emissions. We did all the big stuff. We stopped flying, got rid of the car and changed the way we heat and power our home. Here's a snapshot of our ethical year: But we only managed to cut our carbon emissions by 20%. That's right, just 20%. Remember, according to the scientists we need to cut our emissions by 80% by 2050 just to keep climate change within two degrees centigrade of current world temperatures. Clearly even the best efforts of ethical men and women on their own will not be enough to prevent global warming. So the BBC has given me a new and bigger challenge, nothing less than to save the world from climate change! I'm going on a 6,500 mile trip around the nation that brought the world the motor car, the aeroplane, the suburb, the drive-thru hamburger joint and the hot tub, in search of solutions to the biggest problem on earth. Each American is responsible for 20 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, more than twice that of the average European. But America is also the most innovative and powerful nation on earth and, what's more, has a president who says he is serious about tackling global warming. The idea is simple. If we can solve global warming here, we can solve it anywhere. We've sketched a rough schedule. We'll be starting in a small town in Michigan called Muskegon, and then we'll trace a giant circle round via Detroit, Washington, Texas, California and back to Muskegon. We've lined up all sorts of people to speak to but we need more. We want to meet people who are already trying to find the answers the world needs. Who do you think we should be talking to? Do you have any ideas about how we might make the massive changes to our societies that will be necessary to cut greenhouse gas emissions? Do you know anyone who is working in their garage on some crazy invention that might just save the world? And I've got another, rather more personal request. Because I'm travelling as the BBC's Ethical Man I've been ordered to keep my environmental impact to an absolute minimum. Of course I'm going to fly from Britain, but after that my producer Sara insists that I have to get around in the most low carbon way possible. I have downloaded the Greyhound bus timetable and am looking at what trains I might catch... but how else can I get around? Please click the Ethical Man Feed button in the right hand column and subscribe to my RSS feed. Then you'll be alerted to any new blogs. I plan to post regular reports as I travel around America, and want to stimulate a vigorous debate about whether we can, or indeed should, attempt to build a low-carbon economy. You can find out more about my last Ethical Man project here. And you can follow my progress across America via the Ethical Man Facebook group and on Twitter. *** For Your Kind Information ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

[ubuntu-in] Some more problems with Hindi and openoffice
Hi am facing some problems with using hindi (Devanagari) while typing out open office documents main problem - when i use the keyboard indicator icon to switch between English and hindi (Ind wallah) the writing begins all right - but if i make any changes in the font - like bold, italics, underline then the typed material gets converted into blocks. To rectify this i have to select the text and choose Lohit Hindi font to make it visible again. Second if i type a document and don't use bolding, italics or underline but keep the font option to ooo.org's default then it appears on the screen but while printing it appears as block characters, again to rectify this i need to select the content and change the font to Lohit Hindi So whats this problem and how can i get a permanent solution. Am wondering if there is any way open office (or my system) knows i am typing in hindi and automatically selects Lohit Hindi (or any other Unicode font) for the duration that keyboard selection remains at Ind(Hindi / Devanagari) Third - has any one got the open office hindi dictionary extension option working, if so what version of open office and how does it work. would appreciate your help thanks ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
[ubuntu-in] OT (but def happy OT ; -) - Internet Explorer security alert
Internet Explorer security alert http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/technology/7784908.stm Users of the world's most common web browser have been advised to switch to a rival until a serious security flaw has been fixed. The flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer could allow criminals to take control of people's computers and steal their passwords, internet experts say. Microsoft is investigating the problem and preparing an emergency software patch to resolve it, it says. Internet Explorer is used by the vast majority of the world's computer users. "Microsoft is continuing its investigation of public reports of attacks against a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer," said the firm in a security advisory alert about the flaw. Microsoft says it has detected attacks against version seven of the browser - its most widely used edition. But the company warned that other versions were also potentially vulnerable. As many as 10,000 websites have been compromised since last week to take advantage of the security flow, said antivirus software maker Trend Micro. The websites have been mostly serving up programs that steal computer game passwords, but the flaw could be "adopted by more financially motivated criminals", a Trend Micro security researcher said on Monday.
