[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 269302] Re: At the GDM scree, Dell 610 laptop screen remains on while on a docking station and with an external screen connected

2009-09-16 Thread Emmanuel Pacaud
The bug is still there using current karmic. I've seen on a fedora 11
box there's an access to the screen configuration dialog from gdm. Could
it be a workaround for this issue ?

On a side note, it breaks badly the quality of the visual boot
experience, as seen on the attached screenshot (which show the worst
case, usually I get the gdm wallpaper tiled with 1024x768 tiles on a
1280x1024 screen).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 431191] [NEW] Black screen

2009-09-16 Thread Patrice Vetsel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Before new upstart system was working great. After upgrade uptodate I had this
bug : #431178 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/431178 (see
here for attachments)..
So I use 20090917.1 amd64 live to install a fresh system. But now reboot after
reboot I'v some text errors at boot and screen go black. System seem to work
behind the black screen (I use ctrl+alt+del or I think that I can enter in
session +).
Recovery mode go black too so it's unusable

After many manipulations reboot/power off I came at prompt because of
corrupted file system. I do an fsck -y /dev/sda3 And after a reboot the
system works great now (instead of having an usplash progression bar
but it's another reported bug).

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 370292] Re: [i855] X freezing on intel 855GM

2009-09-16 Thread Mike Rose
Hi Nomnex,
I'm no ubuntu bugsmith, so I don't know if you should be asking for
advice or not here, but I'm happy to give it. :)

If you follow that link you talk about, it will give you instructions on
how to revert to the older version of the display driver. This older
version is still fine and I haven't yet found any issues. It is,
however, not very fast at 3D. If you're into gaming, I'd suggest
having/keeping a dual boot with windows as you won't get very good
performance out of the 855 under linux (well, under anything really, but
windows will be better). I also suggest you turn off visual effects
(system -> preferences -> appearance -> visual effects -> none) but you
can try without and see if it's fast enough for you.

It seems that this bug has been submitted upstream and for some reason,
subsequently closed, even though the bug has not been fixed.

It's the unfortunate state of affairs that some driver/software
developers don't want to hear about bugs in their code and seem to react
with derision towards anyone reporting. Possibly this is the case here,
I don't know. I can understand their frustration though, as it seems
that too many newcomers to linux don't understand how FOSS works and
treat the developers as if they *should* or *have to* help them. It can
be frustrating to both parties, however everyone needs to remember that
the developers are putting in their own time and effort for free and
have no obligation to do *anything* for *anyone*.

I have given up hope on this bug being fixed and will continue to use
the 2.4 drivers until it's time to upgrade my laptop. Hopefully these
older drivers remain compatible with future X changes until this time.

If you want to take this bug further, I'm sure someone else subscribed
to this bug report will be able to direct you in the right direction.
Just remember the point above; in this community, the developers are
considered gods and justifiably so. For a developer to fix this bug is
to do you a favour so try to avoid getting angry or frustrated if they
decline.

I hope this helps. :)

Mike

2009-09-16 Thread nomnex
@Mike Rose and everybody on the thread.

Hi, glad I found this thread. I am fairly new to Ubuntu and certainly
less experienced than any of you. I use Jaunty on a Panasonic Let's note
model CF-W2 I bought in Japan a few years ago (Intel chipset must be
very close to CF-R3).

I experience exactly the same symptoms: Random freezes (the machine is a
little sluggish a few minutes before). The mouse can move on screen. The
only way to recover is to operate a cold-boot.

It is very frustrating since I do love using Linux Ubuntu (vs. M$). Do
you mind if I ask for help on the thread? Do I have to follow a link:
Reverting the Jaunty Xorg intel driver to 2.4 - and if I do will I
experienced any graphic change - or do I have to install Karmic (but
reading the thread freezes still occur).

Sorry, I am not helpful to the thread, I only ask for advice/help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 431043] Re: After upgrade to 2.7.1, suspended machine resumes to gdm login screen

2009-09-16 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
KLEIN Stéphane, the packages from the x-updates PPA are not officially
supported. For a while after the release of Jaunty, we were interested
in bugs from this PPA since they couldend up in Karmic. Now, there is a
newer driver (2.8.1) in Karmic and we're only really interested in
problems that are present there (I guess the description on the PPA page
should be updated).

I'm closing this bug report, but it would be nice if you could test for
this problem in Karmic. LiveCD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.10/ (alpha-6 should be available
soon) and http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/ (daily updated, but
possibly less stable, one of those will be tested and become alpha-6).
If the bug is still present, please report it with the `ubuntu-bug`
command like just like you did with this one (preferably right after
such a restart).

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 429307] Re: [i965GM] video corruption when changing windows after suspend-resume

2009-09-16 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
As you understand, you have two different bugs here triggered by the
suspend cycle. Since this bug report originally is about the
corruption, I suggest that we focus on that here. It would be nice if
you could report the window manager problem as well as another bug
report.

Since the before-after files really are for seeing what changes during
suspend-resume and triggers the bug, we would need files for when the
corruption happens afterwards for this bug report. It's nice to have
the ones you already uploaded as well, since we can then see if
thebehaviour is different. Depending on how often the corruption
happens, you may have to run through the procedure a few times to get
before-after files from when the corruption is triggered. Just to make
sure, take a copy of Xorg.0.log also from the cycle when the bug is
triggered, so that we have a set of log files that are all from the
same run. The files you have should be good for the WM bug report,
though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368187] Re: [HD3650] Kubuntu: garbage screen

2009-09-16 Thread pvautrin
Pauli,

Unfortunately there's no such setting in my BIOS (GA-K8VM800M Rev1.x)

Now I'm confused about which memory area you are refering to.

iomem/ioports give the following memory areas (same in WinXP)

d000-dfff : PCI Bus :01
  d000-dfff : :01:00.0
d000-dfff : radeon
e000-e3ff : GART
  e000-e3ff : aperture
e400-e5ff : PCI Bus :01
  e400-e401 : :01:00.0
  e500-e500 : :01:00.0
e500-e500 : radeon
  e501-e5013fff : :01:00.1
e501-e5013fff : ICH HD audio

03c0-03df : vga+
9000-9fff : PCI Bus :01
  9000-90ff : :01:00.0
9000-90ff : radeon

And early in Xorg.0.log, I can see
(--) PCI:*(0...@1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc RV635 PRO AGP [Radeon HD 3650] rev
0, Mem @ 0xd000/268435456, 0xe500/65536, I/O @ 0x9000/256, BIOS @
0x/131072

So the 64M (e000-e3ff) is the AGP aperture, while the 256M
(d000-dfff) is a different area that seems to be called video RAM or
framebuffer according to these lines
(II) RADEON(0): Detected total video RAM=524288K, accessible=262144K (PCI
BAR=262144K)
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] framebuffer handle = 0xd000

Nevertheless, you mention a conflict between agpgart and acpi, and the
allocation error happens after "Using ACPI for IRQ routing", even with acpi=off
option.
So does this mean the bug is in acpi? Can we point the relevant devs to this
thread for comments/solution?

Thanks for your time

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 278260] Re: [i865g] ACER AL1715 inactive on boot 8.10 Beta

2009-09-16 Thread Red
I'm having a similar problem - the monitor goes into standby as soon as
X starts when using the "intel" driver, but when the default video
driver is used for X it works fine, but with no 3D acceleration (i
assume it's fallen back to the VESA driver). Unfortunately for me
there's no upgrade slots (everything onboard), so this is actually an
issue.

What I think may be happening is the card may not be initialising
properly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 286424] Re: nvidia-settings crashes when user clicks Save To X Configuration File

2009-09-16 Thread Shang Wu
Got the bug today with a fresh install Karmic (20090916)

Since in Karmic there are no xorg.conf file exists in the /etc/X11
directory anymore, nvidia-settins doesn't like that. :( (Tried create an
empty xorg.conf file, no good)

In the end, you will need to run:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

Then,

gksudo nvidia-settings

Everything will work after that.

Perhaps we should consider include the basic xorg.conf file when
nvidia-settings start to avoid this error.

the milestone simply indicates that they hope to have a fix in by the
beta release(a development milestone release). It could be in a daily
build this weekend, or prove difficult enough to fix that it misses the
milestone. Time will tell.. I'm hoping for this weekend.

2009-09-16 Thread Pauli
In #radeon irc channel we found solution for gentoo users with similar
problems. It was caused by commit a381287759b2b65e7de9fb35801c781cab016f10
(log: "drm/radeon/kms/r600: use blit for BO moves") in drm-next branch of
Airlied's kernele tree.

Reverting solves the problem until blit copy code is fixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 348332] Re: [RV250] Kubuntu: X Freezes with Radeon driver EXA/XAA Composite

2009-09-16 Thread Gerardo Campos
I have been having the freezes problem, at least every 30 minutes,

I tried all the following suggestions.

1. Setting to none the visual effects
2. Removing compiz
3. Updating the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to several recommendations,

Doing all of the above, reduced the problem to one freeze per day.

I found that updating the kernel to 2.6.29.6 fixed my problem, that
eventually allowed me to:

1. Restored /etc/X11/xorg.conf to the default settings
2. Reinstall compiz
3. Set visual effects to normal.

I have been running this for 3 days, and no freeze yet.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 430865] [NEW] Screen starts flickering when dkms autoinstalls nvidia on linux-2.6.31-5-rt

2009-09-16 Thread Nicolas Joyard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-185

Running Ubuntu 9.10.
When booting on the 2.6.31-5-rt kernel, dkms starts, displaying:

* Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.31-5-rt
*  nvidia (185.18.36)

The screen immediately starts to flicker. X is not started and I'm
directed to console login. Keyboard is very unreliable (about 1 on 10
keystrokes is actually passed to the console) thus I cannot login to see
additional logs. Pressing Ctrl-alt-del works and immediately stops the
flickering.

After rebooting to a -generic kernel, I can see the following in
/var/log/dkms_autoinstaller :

nvidia (185.18.36): Installing module.
(bad exit status: 10)
  Build failed. Installation skipped.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415846] [NEW] Asus M50SV Nividia Geforce 9500M brightness

2009-09-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: (unsure)

I have been helping installing Ubuntu on a laptop. The laptop had a problem
with brightness, in which the display is very dark. Fortunately there is a fix
for this.

Link to article:- http://www.linlap.com/wiki/asus+m50sv

The fix that works for ubuntu 9.04. is listed below. I have deleted the
bits that are not relevent.

The NVIDIA Geforce 9500M needs the latest version of the nvidia drivers
to function properly. However even with the new drivers its brightness
is still very dark. Until this fix is done.

On ubuntu have to change the sensor light level (light levels go from 0
to 15):

sudo -s
echo 15 > /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/ls_level

This line can be added to /etc/rc.local file to permanently fix the
issue.

Thanks everyone at ubuntu.

Viktor: See the subject line of the bug report "painting artifacts ...

You're reporting a completely different problem, because you aren't
_using_ an intel chipset.

ime, _this_ bug is fixed.

2009-09-16 Thread blubaustin
I did try it, sorry about the late response. I tried disabling DRI, and
etc as other have, and it did help a little but did not fix the problem
entirely. I do believe it is a DRI bug, I had a custom kernel on the
ubuntu 9.10 machine I was working with. It is now happily back to debian

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 238903] Re: [atheros] kernel hang while transfering files over the wireless interface

2009-09-16 Thread SlawekM
I've found recently that sometimes system does not hang, but wifi
connection is dropped unexpectedly instead. I'm sitting two meters from
AP and I'm the only user so it is not caused by signal strength or AP
overload. But maybe this could be a clue - when disconnection occurs,
/var/log/messages shows the following:

2009-09-16 Thread Martin Pitt
I tried https://edge.launchpad.net/~albertomilone/+archive/x-testing on
a live system (new mesa), and I still have the same problem.

When I remove /usr/lib/dri/r600_dri.so, GNOME session starts up, but
with metacity. So that would be a regression compared to Jaunty, where I
didn't get 3D acceleration on the r6xx, but at least compositing and Xv
worked.

Hi tweenk,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368187] Re: [HD3650] Kubuntu: garbage screen

2009-09-16 Thread pvautrin
Thanks Pauli,
I was recommended this option some time ago and indeed it restores display
(forgot to mention it on this thread).
This problem appeared when I changed motherboard. I was able to access
xorg.conf of my installation of Jaunty with Ctrl+Alt+F1. But the issue is that
I don't think it's possible to edit xorg.conf with a live CD, so this means no
fresh install for me.
Moreover, a number of 3D programs/applications fail and I suspect it comes from
this workaround situation.
Do you mean it's a bug in the BIOS? Any reason why Windows is not suffering
from this?

Windows has driers from manufactures who know how their hardware works (or
should know) so windows drivers have good chance of not hitting problems.

Problem is not bios but how AGP bridge and GPU work together when
reading/writing data to system memory with GPU.
