[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433974] Re: [i965GM] corrupt texture in phoronix-test-suite qgears2

2009-09-22 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
[0.00] Unknown boot option `i915.modeset=0': ignoring
is normal, and I think it suggests that adding module-specific options to the
command line may not be the canonical way of doing it - it's fast and easy
though. You can verify that KMS is used/not used by some modesetting messages
in the output of dmesg or by display names in Xorg.0.log being of the form
DVI1/DVI-1 and LVDS1/LVDS-1. Also the VTs typically look quite different in the
two modes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 400374] Re: X server freezes while the application is executing XQueryPointer

2009-09-22 Thread Dima Ryazanov
Oh interesting. _gdk_windowing_window_at_pointer calls XQueryPointer
multiple times, and has the following explanation for the grab:

/* This function really only works if the mouse pointer is held still
   * during its operation. If it moves from one leaf window to another
   * than we'll end up with inaccurate values for win_x, win_y
   * and the result.
   */

So who's at fault here? Gdk, for grabbing the server? Or Xlib, for not
providing better APIs?

It's not possible to attach a second gdb instance to ungrab the server.
Killing the program works, of course, but this isn't exactly a solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 400374] Re: X server freezes while the application is executing XQueryPointer

2009-09-22 Thread Karl Tomlinson
gdk_display_get_window_at_pointer() (or more specifically
_gdk_windowing_window_at_pointer) grabs with XGrabServer() before calling
XQueryPointer.

The grab can be broken by switching to a virtual terminal and killing
the app using gdk_display_get_window_at_pointer (or attaching to that
process with a debugger and calling XUngrabServer(Display* display),
though I don't know if you can do that if a debugger is already
attached).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 435011] [NEW] xorg takes 100% CPU, UI unresponsive

2009-09-22 Thread Dave Butcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I didn't know if I should add a 'me too' to Bug# 434416 or file a new bug.
My symptoms are similar, but my hardware and drivers are different.
I have an AMD 64-bit, originally running Intrepid, then upgraded (not a clean
install) to Jaunty when it was officially released. My recollection is that my
system was rock solid until about the third week of July 2009, when I
experienced my first crash, since then seemingly random crashes and seem to be
getting more frequent. There is no syslog message corresponding to the freeze.
When the freeze occurs, my computer appears totally unresponsive: Ctrl-Alt-F1
does not take me to a terminal, and Ctrl-Alt-Bkspce does not restart X, but
Ctrl-SysRq-R-E-I-S-U-B does reboot. I am unable to SSH into the machine during
a freeze, and it does not respond to a network PING.
I recently downgraded my Nvidia driver from 180 to 173, but this did not
improve anything. I've also tried booting to an earlier kernel (specifically
2.6.28-11-generic, which is earlier than my problems starting), but again no
improvement.
My machine froze again last night. I was running top through an ssh connection
at the time of the freeze-up, and have attached a copy of the screen to this
posting. Xorg is consuming 100% of the CPU, after about 20 hours uptime.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392039] Re: initramfs scripts hard-coded to load i915; blocks loading non-intel drm modules

2009-09-22 Thread Scott James Remnant
Things found out so far:

 1. The mystery of what loads the fbcon driver on i915 systems without
cryptsetup has been solved, the intel Xorg driver hardcodes a "modprobe
fbcon" into it

 2. The fbcon driver needs to be loaded when you have a framebuffer, but
can't just be a "depends" of the modules since the KMS ones (i915,
radeon, etc.) allow mode setting to be optional. A simple fix for this
is a udev rule in 80-drivers.rules with the others:

SUBSYSTEM=="graphics", RUN+="/sbin/modprobe -b fbcon"

 3. hooks/kernelextras could probably be massively simplified to just
add the kms modules, it should not "force_load fbcon" and should just
add it

 4. vesafb is in a special /initrd directory, this can probably go away
and be replaced by a manual_add_modules in hooks/kernelextras

 5. scripts/init-top/framebuffer can mostly just go away, we should let
udev load the graphics driver and thus fbcon

Unsolved things:

 a. How should we load usplash when it's included in the initramfs? If
we do this on a udev rule, that's fair enough.

 b. But then, how do we load vesafb if we don't have a different
graphics driver?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433974] Re: [i965GM] corrupt texture in phoronix-test-suite qgears2

2009-09-22 Thread Jonathan Wheare
This is not a suspend/resume bug. It is exhibited immediately after
boot.

I added the i915.modeset=0 line to grub, but saw the following in the
dmesg log:

[0.00] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-10-generic
root=UUID=68a3128f-f61f-4994-9314-d717846b87f4 ro quiet splash i915.modeset=0

[7.704159] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for :00:02.0 on minor 0

same result running the benchmark.

After I failed to repeat the earlier suspend/resume bug, I started
looking for some way of exercising the graphics subsystem. I had seen
some graphical corruption running vegastrike and WoW under wine, but the
phoronix test was simple and repeatable. Unfortunately I have not run
the test on this hardware before, so I cannot confirm whether it is a
regression. I am willing to roll the driver either forward or back if
that would be helpful.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433488] Re: calling GLX 1.3 function "glXCreatePixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported

2009-09-22 Thread Tormod Volden
>From #dri-devel last night:
idr, did you see the patch I posted for your GLX 1.3 warnings?
 tormod: I did.
tormod: Thank you for reminding me. I was going to commit that today.
great. what should the "buggy" applications do btw? for instance
compiz does not care about glx version and justs probes for the functions that
it needs
If the GLX version is not 1.3 or greater, it should not call those
functions.
tormod: I don't know what you mean by "probes for the functions that it
needs".
tormod: The only probe is to call glXQueryVersion.
 tormod: Or glXQueryExtensionsString.
sorry I don't know how this works, but I had a glance at the compiz
code and it checks for these functions
and since the messages appear, it is obviously using them :) and it works
compiz uses glXQueryExtensionsString, but also some getProcAddress
("glXCreatePixmap") magic
(http://cgit.compiz.org/compiz/core/tree/plugins/opengl/src/screen.cpp)
tormod: That magic is 100% wrong.
tormod: On the standard libGL, glXGetProcAddress *ALWAYS* returns a pointer to
something.
tormod: Even if you call 'glXGetProcAddress("baconisyummytoeat");'.
 Well, bacon *is* delicious.
 true dat!
:) but if compiz was doing things correct (TM) it would just not run
on r300 then?
tormod: It was doing things correct, it would continue to run when
non-essential functionality was not available.
tormod: Can it just not possibly run without some GLX 1.3 exclusive
functionality? I doubt it.
 yes I guess it would
It obviously does since we don't support GLX 1.3! :)
but it uses those GLX 1.3 functions with success?
Given all the bug reports that we've had from compiz and Wine calling GLX
1.3 functions that eventually result in either crashes or incorrect results, no.
Which is why I added the warning.
so compiz _is_ buggy? news at 11
Many of the GLX 1.3 functions are identical to functions added by
extensions (e.g., GLX_SGIX_fbconfig) that we do support.
Calling the GLX 1.3 versions just dumps into the extension functions.
Those cases happen to work by dumb luck.
 thanks for the explanations!

I fail to see how compiz is doing anything wrong here. We don't check
for the GLX version but we do check to see if that function exists
before trying to use it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 434894] [NEW] radeon driver fails to load - no Xorg (powerpc)

2009-09-22 Thread tournesolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libdrm-radeon1

In karmic, Xorg fails to come up and dumps me into a terminal because:

dlopen: libdrm_radeon.so.1: cannot open shared object file: no such file or
directory
 (EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//radeon_drv.so

(Xorg can be loaded with the framebuffer driver, but it is ugly and
weird.)

It turns out that the package libdrm-radeon1 was not installed
automatically although it should have been. Installing it solved the
problem. It seems that either a dependency on libdrm-radeon1 is missing
somewhere, or an automatic detection of the need for it is missing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 84278] Re: infinite loop with PrintScreen

2009-09-22 Thread Meryl
on hp compaq nx8220 with Ubuntu 9.04 I can reproduce this infinite
screenshot loop every time with the following condtions:

Usually I will also have many programmes open at once; terminal, the
Gimp, Open Office, Firefox with 12 or more tabs, Claws-mail and Gedit.
Then with a big Grep running: say on my entire home directory - so that
my processor is chugging away at full capacity - I might take a
screenshot of something and kappow!

Gnome screenshot consistently starts an infinite loop when these
conditions are present.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433974] Re: [i965GM] corrupt texture in phoronix-test-suite qgears2

2009-09-22 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Upstream is asking if this is a regression, i.e. has this worked before
on your hardware? Either with an older version of ubuntu, or even with
the same installation and UMS instead of KMS (i915.modeset=0 at the
kernel command line).

And just to make sure, unlike bug 429307 this bug doesn't need a
suspend-resume to be triggered, right?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432178] Re: [CX700] Mouse, keyboard, and power button freeze

2009-09-22 Thread captinkid
The mouse, keyboard and video card are currently frozen, I am
currently using an external USB keyboard to build the openchrome debug
driver.

I have saved the Xorg.0.log (current run with input freeze and
openchrome (non debug)) and Xorg.0.log.old.

Running with the command line interface is stable, however the input
freeze also affects the terminal and command line. External USB inputs
still function.

The inputs still froze while running X in vesa mode.

Jaunty would not install and boot reliably. It would freeze at random
points during the install process, and freeze seconds after X started.

Karmic installed properly, but it has the input freeze problem.

Is there any test I could run while it is frozen that would help
diagnose this issue?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392039] Re: initramfs scripts hard-coded to load i915; blocks loading non-intel drm modules

2009-09-22 Thread Steve Langasek
My understanding is that this only affects systems that have /usr/share
/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-top/framebuffer in the initramfs, which as
of alpha 6 only happens to systems that have cryptsetup installed.
Should this bug really be regarded as a critical beta blocker in that
case? Or have I missed other reasons why this bug would be affecting
people?

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/experimental/ubuntu jaunty main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu jaunty main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/staging/ubuntu jaunty main

and the bug still persists!

My today's report with screenshots etc:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434602
(It's a duplicate of this bug, because I didn't find this bug due to "fixed"
status.)

Screenshots of artifacts (see the link above) are from KDevelop 3.9.91

Note that the patches only fix the Screen mode (most used mode, only way
to get a decent precision with the devices), the Window mode still draws
off cursor. But it's by far the mode where it's important (even though
fixing the behavior in Window mode would still be a good thing).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 434376] [NEW] KDE kicker, menu and apps titlebar not viewable

2009-09-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

All was well with Karmic alpha1, the symptoms appeared after an update
in late June or sometime in July, I wish I'd remembered or made a note.
Recently I did a clean install of alpha 5 and no change. It appears to
be associated with the drivers associated with my Radeon 7200 (circa
2002) display adapter. The symptoms were eliminated when another display
adapter that was on hand, a 1997 vintage S3 ViRGE PCI was installed.
Details of the symptoms: Kicker panel is black with very thin vertical
lines of various seemingly random hues and shades of orange, yellow and
gray. When moving the mouse pointer along kicker panel the expected text
windows appear at the expected location of the icons. The Kmenu opens to
a crosshatch of similar lines with more variety of colors and when
applications are opened, the titlebar on open apps also shows symptoms
like the Kicker panel.

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 410267] Re: Pressure sensitive tablet: stylus paints off-cursor in Gimp and Inkscape

2009-09-22 Thread Loïc Martin
Matthieu's debdiff works for me on an Intuos3 tablet with either
Inkscape of the Gimp. Input 100% matches the cursor, with pressure still
there as expected.

It also seems to have fixed Bug #433121, which resulted on an immediate
Inkscape segfault that is not happening any more with the patches in the
debdiff.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433142] Re: geode driver do not display 1024x600 on (K)UNR Karmic

2009-09-22 Thread Rainer Oliveira
Hum
As a "workaround", is it possible to use the 2.10.1-2 version geode driver in
Ubuntu Karmic or Jaunty?
I tried to compile the driver from x.org, but it complains about xserver-xorg
and xproto packages "not found".

I saw in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
geode/+bug/234898 (i dont know how to use links) that q-funk made the
geode-driver 2.11.4.1 avaliable for jaunty, intrepid and even for hardy,
but can I (or you) made the 2.10.1-2 avaliable for Jaunty and Karmic? I
know it's not the best solution, but it would be good for me as a
workaround for my netbook until the bug is fixed upstream (jaunty is
much faster in my netbook than intrepid, and Karmic is even more).

Thanks again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver

2009-09-22 Thread Andrew Barbaccia
I have just opened a bug report in gnome since this still persists in
9.10 and seems to be vino specific.

A gconf option (/desktop/gnome/remote_session/disable_xdamage) has been
added to disable the xdamage extension which is a temporary workaround
although it requires more bandwidth. Enable the option through gconf-
editor.

Please limit comments on bug reports to items that are related to
development. Adding "me too", suggesting software alternatives and all
other rants should be held in the forums. :)

Hopefully this gets fixed before 9.10...
