[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 418470] Re: USB Gamepad detected as mouse (Speedlink 360 style)

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi mahen,

I believe you should be able to construct an fdi file which enables all
these functions for you, although my own fdi-fu is not strong enough to
give you foolproof guidance. However, I think you can use the existing
.fdi's in /etc/hal/fdi/policy as examples. If you come up with an .fdi
you're reasonably happy with please post it here and we'll look into
including it for Ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 340344] Re: [jaunty] Provide header files and .pc file

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Ikezoesan,

We do not expose the input driver development headers because in theory
all the functionality applications need should be available through
input properties. Providing the headers would commit X to supporting
additional API layers which in fact may change upstream in ways we
cannot easily support (i.e. they may be changing the API without notice
and break your application as a result).

Instead, I would ask that you identify any functionality you need that
the current input properties do not provide and file bugs requesting
those capabilities be added.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 325581] Re: kensington pocket mouse model #72237 USB 0d62:1000 not working under 8.10

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks for posting this patch, I'm kicking myself for not seeing this
earlier. I would like to see this vetted by upstream since it changes
behavior for all devices not just this specific one, so it could
introduce regressions; for that reason I am going to hold off on it for
Karmic.

I think it might be ok to include for Lucid, however even more
preferable would be to fix this in the kernel so it's not necessary to
work around it at all. For that reason I've added a kernel task. If
the kernel team doesn't solve it directly, I'll look into the workaround
further hopefully before Lucid ships. If you don't hear from me within
a few months on this, give me a ping.

Sorry it's taken so long to get to this, but unfortunately the bug was
posted without enough information to troubleshoot. I am going to close
it at this time because of this. If you still see this issue with
current Karmic, please file a new bug using the command `ubuntu-bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 319228] Re: elantech touchpad displays oddly granular movement (jaunty)

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks for the reference. From that, it sounds like this requires a
modification of the kernel evdev driver code, so I'm refiling against
linux.

** Package changed: xserver-xorg-input-evdev (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu)

** Tags added: xorg-needs-kernel-fix

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-10-14 Thread Denham Coote
I must be a complete idiot. I tried patching, as per #256. All seemed to be
going ok.
Got the same errors as #236. Proceeded to install. Rebooted.

Windows still take 5 seconds to restore.

Am I missing something?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 448865] Re: GTK+ apps do not render in Kubuntu 9.10 beta

2009-10-14 Thread Giovanni Masucci
The bug has been fixed by intel (I attached to thi bug report the url to
the upstream bug report).

Well, here is the final situation:

bug comes with:
intel 2.9 + qtcurve <= 0.68
intel fixed it in their main branch (proper fix), while the qtcurve mantainer
found a workaround and included it in qtcurve 0.69.

So to fix this we can:
1) backport the fix from intel
2) update qtcurve to 0.69
3) both 1 and 2

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 449196] Re: High Xorg CPU usage?

2009-10-14 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
Interesting... Sometimes gnome-system-monitor shows me up to 50% CPU
usage (e.g. if I move my mouse around very fast), but at the same moment
ps shows 8.5% usage of /usr/bin/X. Does that mean that GSM doesn't give
reliable information here? What could cause such a difference?

And, btw, I don't know if 8.5% is still a lot or not (seems to be, but
who knows).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363041] Re: Redraw issues

2009-10-14 Thread pauls
I am testing this in karmic alpha plus updates and do not have the
artifact rendering problem. I'm using the stock karmic nvidia
185.18.36-0ubuntu5 and not the one from your ppa. Is the version in
your ppa for jaunty or karmic? If there's a jaunty version, I'd be
willing to try it on jaunty.

For now, I found the compiz settings > utility > workaround plugin >
check "X and GLx" which fixes it in jaunty.

regards,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451697] Re: Xorg pegs CPU, desktop performance suffers after Karmic upgrade

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Once you are done bisecting, to return your system to the original
state, you would simply reinstall the 2.8.1 package, the same way you
did before, and restart the system. This will overwrite the driver
installed via git.

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Since you were able to identify this cleanly as a 2.8.1->2.9.0
regression, a feasible debugging technique is git-bisection. This
procedure is documented here, if you'd be willing to give it a go:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 421842] Re: screen corruption and segfaults with radeon m6 ly

2009-10-14 Thread Luca Aluffi
Found new clue: if I generate a xorg.conf then set option "accelmethod"
"EXA", the "tartan" effect goes away and everything looks good. On the
other hand performances are poorer, even in firefox.

Maybe the trouble has to be in XAA method, which seems to be changed
from jaunty to karmic.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305301] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI

2009-10-14 Thread subchee
I'll try the new kernel from the PPA, but I think this problem is related to
the vga driver.

I don't want to disable the DRI, because when I did it, there were only 256
colors on my notebook and my desktop looked horrible. (I use screenlets and
without DRI they are ugly) And the performance is very weak without the DRI.
:-(

I wish I could code C++ :-)

Everything works fine here, I have gnome running from the Live CD. Actually I
writing this from the Live Session.

The screen still is black shortly after the ubuntu boot logo, but this looks
normal to me.
Sorry for the inconvenience. I think this bug is closeable.

I'd just like to note (for clarity's sake) that the version of xserver-

I had to revert to 2.8.1 in order to regain use of my laptop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451697] Re: Xorg pegs CPU, desktop performance suffers after Karmic upgrade

2009-10-14 Thread Kees Cook
To clarify, this is not bug 439138 since the CPU would idle when not
doing anything (and cryptsetup is not installed).

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I'd been using Karmic for the last couple of weeks and did an upgrade to
get latest last night. After a reboot I logged in and overall
performance was really lousy. Scrolling from within a window, dragging
a window around, typing within a window were glacially slow. Any time I
did any of the above things Xorg pegged the CPU. I tried rebooting
again, that didn't work. I also tried rebooting and using an older
  kernel, that also didn't work.

What managed to get everything back to normal was reverting from
  xserver-xorg-video-intel_2%3a2.9.0-1ubuntu2_i386.deb to xserver-xorg-
  video-intel_2%3a2.8.1-1ubuntu2_i386.deb. After another reboot
performance was as it was before the update. All other packages remain
  as they are.

- This is (apparently) not related to the cryptsetup version, I have the
- most recent (fixed) version:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 449196] Re: High Xorg CPU usage?

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Compare your process listing (`ps aux`) from this 25% case with the high
cpu case (if you can still reproduce the issue). Examine each process
listed in the latter case but not the former.

*Usually* high X CPU is caused by some other X client process making too
many requests of the X server. These cases aren't bugs in the X server
but rather in the client application (perhaps it's stuck in some loop
that makes excessive X calls).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 320639] Re: Touchpad movement problems in 0.99.3

2009-10-14 Thread dmgood
inability to do basic mousey things like rubber-banding and clicking
with precision is kinda like the mouse not working at all. This just
might be worthy of the coveted high priority sticker.

This bug is being reported all over the place. At one point, I was
playing with the gsynaptic stuff, and schemed what might be the matter.
Check out: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1234544

Or,
---pasty---
Hi!

Thanks for responding to my plight

Sadly, I lost the battle of Dave vs. the Touchypad... my kid's confuser
now has WinXP installed on it. Under Win, the touchpad works as
expected, so it is pretty certainly something is amiss afoot alas with
the linux driver.

Before calling no glory however, I was finally able to get gsynaptc
stuff working. This allowed me to watch the data-stream coming back from
the touchpad. The results were... interesting.

First up, the touchpad on this netbook is weird. The buttons are
integrated in to the touchy surface and not separate. When you touch the
area over the buttons, the driver reports the XY coordinates of the
touch.

When you click the button, the driver reports the touch before the click
occurs. As you start to press on the button and before it clicks, you
will see the XY coordinates of the touch moving a bit. The mouse cursor
responds by moving, thereby causing you to miss what you were tryin to
click on more often than not.

As to the drag thing being a drag... process is, click and hold the
button, then slide your finger over the surface. As you run out of
surface, pick up your finger and rinse/repeat. Except... as soon as you
lift your finger, the driver screams that the lower left corner is now
being touched (tis where you are holding the button), and the rubber-
band responds by jumping that way. This is why dragging is hosed.

Seemed the obvious fix was to get the driver to stop reporting touches
along the bottom edge of the pad. I spent a good bit of time playing
with xorg.conf setting trying to get the driver to ignore that area of
the screen... I never could get then the settings to do what I was
looking for.

Looking in the bug-lists, this problem is being reported in various
places. It appears that the smart folks are on the case. Perhaps someone
will crack this before too long.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451697] [NEW] Xorg pegs CPU, desktop performance suffers after Karmic upgrade

2009-10-14 Thread dmandell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I'd been using Karmic for the last couple of weeks and did an upgrade to
get latest last night. After a reboot I logged in and overall
performance was really lousy. Scrolling from within a window, dragging
a window around, typing within a window were glacially slow. Any time I
did any of the above things Xorg pegged the CPU. I tried rebooting
again, that didn't work. I also tried rebooting and using an older
kernel, that also didn't work.

What managed to get everything back to normal was reverting from
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2%3a2.9.0-1ubuntu2_i386.deb to xserver-xorg-
video-intel_2%3a2.8.1-1ubuntu2_i386.deb. After another reboot
performance was as it was before the update. All other packages remain
as they are.

This is (apparently) not related to the cryptsetup version, I have the
most recent (fixed) version:

cryptsetup:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2:1.0.6+20090405.svn49-1ubuntu4
  Version table:
 2:1.0.6+20090405.svn49-1ubuntu4 0
500 http://se.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages

I'd be glad to help debug this problem, but I probably can't do it during work
hours because my laptop is more or less unusable for work while in this state.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 449061] Re: [K8M800] Console screens unusable on Averatec 3280 laptop

2009-10-14 Thread Peter Belew
Just a few minutes ago, I tried switching to a console on this
Averatec 3280 laptop, and the text screen was normal - no flashing
colors. And the version of the driver is still

  $ dpkg -s xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

  Version: 1:0.2.903+svn758-0ubuntu1

So, as I was beginning to suspect regarding my similar bug report for
a desktop system, the cause must have been a change in some other
package, which was updated with the past 12 hours or so.

One thing that led me to suspect this was the fact that the behavior
was different among the Alpha-4, Alpha-6, Beta, and current updated
systems, when I tried them earlier.

See also #448911.

I'm quite pleased with this, but it is a mystery so far.

I'll update this if any regression occurs! :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 320639] Re: Touchpad movement problems in 0.99.3

2009-10-14 Thread Michael Marley
Perhaps a better option would be to disable Xorg's acceleration for
Synaptics device only, rather than disabling the Synaptics acceleration.
When I disable Synaptics acceleration and use Xorg's acceleration, the
pointer is still extremely sensitive to small movements, and this makes
it hard to hit small buttons, links, and the like. Using the native
Synaptics acceleration with disabled Xorg acceleration (by executing
"xinput set-ptr-feedback "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" 0 0 1") the
touchpad feels the same as it would on a w!nd0ze system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451514] Re: xorg on radeon r200 is extremely unstable in karmic

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Does the stability return if you downgrade to an earlier version of
mesa? For your convenience we've packaged the prior version in the
x-retro ppa:

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-retro

If that fixes it, then this is indeed a regression. There was a bunch
of new 3D support added for R200's so perhaps this introduced some bug
or other for you. If that is the case, would you be willing to do a git
bisect to help isolate which change introduced the problem for you? If
you can, we should be able to get this solved for Karmic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451514] Re: [r200] xorg crashes in _mesa_PopAttrib()

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Also, upstream tends to prefer focusing on one bug per bug report, so we
do as well. I'm going to limit this bug report specifically to "crash
in _mesa_PopAttrib()". You had mentioned general stability so I'm
curious if you see other crashes besides this one; if so please create a
new bug report for each such bug. You can distinguish them by comparing
the backtraces.

One other thing that might be helpful in investigating this bug is to
get a full backtrace. Directions on doing so are available at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing. Thanks ahead of time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 258038] Re: Look into feasibility of using an alternatives system rather than diversions

2009-10-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Looking forward a few months, I'd like to not have this bug open after
Lucid. I think we need to come to a decision on it and either implement
it for the LTS, or else decide to stay with the current system and close
this bug.

This would be a pretty significant change, so might be a bit ambitious
for an LTS (really, I guess we should have done it in karmic, but way
too late now) but the benefit in terms of making it easier for users to
switch between drivers could well be worth it. I think doing this post-
LL would be detrimental since it would inhibit being able to backport
patches, drivers, etc. to the LTS, so if we do not implement it for LL I
think we should just decide not to do it (at least, not until the next
LTS-1).

I'm not 100% certain how to undertake this change, as it is a touch
beyond my packaging-fu, but Mario I assume you'll be at the UDS in
Dallas? Would you like to work out an implementation plan for it there?
