[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 408588] Re: [i865] Low screen resolution using Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 3, Alpha 4, and Alpha 5

I'd really like to purge my systems of this failsafe-x nonsense. Is there documentation some where that explain how to disable the ironically named program? When I was bit by this bug, I didn't have access to another computer to search for a solution. I didn't have a console to read the logs. I didn't have a boot disc either. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)
I am aware of this; I know the details of this problem, having discovered it independently in the days I spent figuring out why Ubuntu failed to boot on my laptop into either X or single-user mode. If kdm was used, then this bug also occurred in single-user mode because the configuration check occurs before the single-user check and returned a non-zero exit status. The failsafe-x init script lacks a sanity check to not run when booting into single-user mode, like kdm and gdm do have. While it is true that this bug cannot currently be triggered, this package is *failsafe* X. If care cannot be taken to make sure it doesn't kill the system due to driver problems, extreme care should at least be taken to ensure it does not break existing, more fail-proof, failsafe methods. If the gdm script ever accidentally returns a non-zero exit status from a future change for whatever reason, this bug will happen again and we will attempt to launch failsafe-x on single-user mode. This is especially unfortunate; presumably if I'm booting into recovery mode, it means that failsafe X already failed and launching it again only risks further disabling the user's machine. It would be good engineering to, for instance, add a check in failsafe-x's script. If not by listening for the starting-dm event, at least do the same /proc/cmdline check that gdm does. Perhaps change the start on rule to start on (stopped gdm EXIT_STATUS=[!0] and starting-dm) But I don't know upstart particularly well, and I cannot test this on my machine; any attempt to bring up failsafe X results in killing it. -- Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. Looking at the Xorg.0.log, it seems that the proper mode of 1366x768 at 60Hz is being discarded with this motivation: Mode is rejected: This mode's horizontal sync end (1446) exceeds the horizontal total size (1437). After some experimentation, the fix (on my machine) was easy. Attached is my entire xorg.conf, the important line of which is the ModeValidation option. This disables the specific check that failed above. See the documentation for the nVidia driver for details. Note that I'm running driver version 190.42, but considering the nature of the problem, this may well apply to the older version pulled in by Jockey. ** Attachment added: "xorg.conf" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36673713/xorg.conf -- NVIDIA® GeForce G 105M - 512MB, gives 6 screens, with nvidia drivers version 180 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/483857 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 471844] Re: X crash
Today, 12/10/2009, I updated my Karmic test system to the most recent versions of all software, including X and the kernel. During this process, I released all holds on the jaunty version of xserver-xorg- video-intel. I am sad to report that gdm remained in the restart loop (despite the fact that I thought I saw a changelog indicating that this problem was fixed). Once I broke out of the gdm service and started x from the console, x seemed to function okay, except that I'm still getting errors with the DRM device. These error persisted even after I added the xswat x updates to my software sources. For my main system, for now, I must remain with the hold, using the jaunty version of xserver-xorg-video-intel. Please let me know if I can provide further information. -- X crash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/471844 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495252] [NEW] Login with GNOME or Failsafe GNOME session goes black then back to login screen
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I allowed the most recent high priority updates to install yesterday, on an otherwise up to date installation of Ubuntu Karmic. I didn't take careful notes on what packages were being updated, but I do recall mention of both the kernel (to 2.6.31-16 generic) and gdm. After the updater completed, it wanted a reboot. After the reboot, my GNOME sessions no longer start. Both the normal GNOME session and the Failsafe GNOME session cause the screen to go black, pause a second or so, then relaunch the login screen. The xterm session does work, and from there I can see that gnome-settings-daemon had an assertion failure. Searching for similar bugs has not been particularly successful, although I did find Bug #452184 quoted a similar assertion failure from an earlier version of the gnome-settings-daemon. I'm guessing that this assertion failure is causing a cascade of errors that result in the whole session exiting, which gdm handles "gracefully" be putting the login screen back up. The frustration level is pretty high, as the machine is effectively not useful in this condition. >From the GRUB menu, I have tried the available kernels (2.6.31-16, -15, and -14). Of those, I got a successful login and session once on 2.6.31-14-generic, but haven't been able to repeat this since. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg The failsafe mode currenty greets the user with "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode," and offers the user options on how to proceed. The crash handling in compiz calls the fallback window manager (currently metacity by default), to stop it from crashing repeatedly. I think you can change that locally in your preferences if you prefer too though. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 239621] Re: Screensaver disables visual effects
It's not a screensaver bug if compiz is crashing. And the information you've provided shows that it is probably crashing somewhere in the NVIDIA driver, although you've not provided a full backtrace. I'll reassign it for now though. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484020] Re: [i845G] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning
> Can we have a discussion on how things got to this point in the first > place? Why did Karmic ship with such a fatally flawed Intel driver? Who > made the decision that this code was suitable for a stable release? I don't think such a discussion would be very fruitful [*]. What could indeed be a fruitful discussion would be one about how to avoid shipping an LTS in April with the same stability problems. Such a discussion should take place on the ubuntu-x mailing list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-x) and not on a bug report. I'm not an expert on xorg, but it seems that the batchbuffer dumps we have sent upstream so far has not triggered any response. From https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24825 it seems that what will be needed is that somebody affected by these problems get their hands dirty and do some git-bisecting in order to find where the problems were introduced. Brian Rogers has already started on that bug report, but has only come as far as finding that the problem does not occur with kernel 2.6.30, but is there in 2.6.31-rc1 - irrespective of intel driver version. A first step would be to make sure that this is also the case here, and then try to identify the commit that triggers the freeze. My impression is that this would give the upstream developers something to work on. [*] Here is my impression in case you find it enlightening: First, I don't agree that the intel driver has become flawed recently. It has improved a lot over the recent iterations (we had some freeze bugs like this on i9xx that are now gone). The problem seems to be one introduced in the kernel (maybe a change there triggered a long-existing bug in the driver). Second, there seems to have been very few people testing Ubuntu development releases on i8xx chipsets. There was a call for testing on the ubuntu-x mailing list back in April, with some - but not overwhelming - response. Bug reports for freezes on 845G and 855GM only started ticking in late October, see [1] and [2] for lists. At this time, we were already in final freeze, and since these bugs are hard to fix, it was at the time unrealistic to get it fixed before the release. I think that it was only well after the release that it became clear that a lot of people had this problem. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 487575] Re: xvfb depends on HAL and fails to start
