[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 408588] Re: [i865] Low screen resolution using Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 3, Alpha 4, and Alpha 5

2009-12-10 Thread JpJ 808
I think I'm having the same problem: I thought it was my monitor, but
now I think I'm discovering it's not having the proper drivers for the
Intel 82865G graphics controller. I'm a n00b, so I don't understand
where exactly to throw the "nomodeset" line, if that is the solution.

Please help!!!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)

2009-12-10 Thread Kevin Christmas
I'd really like to purge my systems of this failsafe-x nonsense. Is
there documentation some where that explain how to disable the
ironically named program? When I was bit by this bug, I didn't have
access to another computer to search for a solution. I didn't have a
console to read the logs. I didn't have a boot disc either. I had no
way of getting a boot disc. I was hosed. It was awful, simply awful.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495337] [NEW] Missing drivers from mesa package.

2009-12-10 Thread Ken Phillis Jr
Public bug reported:

The package fails to include some of the newer drivers built by the mesa source
package. I have checked the requirements, and installation and the files are
not installed... the some of the missing files are as follows:
/usr/lib/dri/EGL_i915.so
/usr/lib/dri/ffb_dri.so
/usr/lib/dri/i810_dri.so
/usr/lib/dri/r600_dri.so

File lists checked:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/i386/libgl1-mesa-dri
http://packages.debian.org/sid/libgl1-mesa-dri

as for checking to make sure this is true or not, i ran the following commands
to check...
sudo apt-get build-deb libgl1-mesa-dri
apt-get source libgl1-mesa-dri
cd mesa*
./configure
make && sudo make install

the result of this set of commands is the files i mentioned where
installed, however i have no clue what other files are missing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495334] [NEW] W500 w/ switchable graphics doesn't work with fglrx

2009-12-10 Thread Shaya Potter
Public bug reported:

so I have a W500 with both an intel and ati video card (switchable
graphics).

it works with the ATI driver in Windows, but it doesn't work with fglrx
in Linux. This is in Karmic.

relevant lspci

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650

though in truth its advertised as a FireGL v5700

when I install fglrx, it fails to find the pci id (I believe, don't have
hte logs handy), but worse fails really badly if one doesn't boot to
console, as it makes the console unusable (can switch to one and reboot,
but can't see anything)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)

2009-12-10 Thread David Benjamin
I am aware of this; I know the details of this problem, having
discovered it independently in the days I spent figuring out why Ubuntu
failed to boot on my laptop into either X or single-user mode.

If kdm was used, then this bug also occurred in single-user mode because
the configuration check occurs before the single-user check and returned
a non-zero exit status. The failsafe-x init script lacks a sanity check
to not run when booting into single-user mode, like kdm and gdm do have.
While it is true that this bug cannot currently be triggered, this
package is *failsafe* X. If care cannot be taken to make sure it doesn't
kill the system due to driver problems, extreme care should at least be
taken to ensure it does not break existing, more fail-proof, failsafe
methods.

If the gdm script ever accidentally returns a non-zero exit status from
a future change for whatever reason, this bug will happen again and we
will attempt to launch failsafe-x on single-user mode. This is
especially unfortunate; presumably if I'm booting into recovery mode, it
means that failsafe X already failed and launching it again only risks
further disabling the user's machine. It would be good engineering to,
for instance, add a check in failsafe-x's script. If not by listening
for the starting-dm event, at least do the same /proc/cmdline check that
gdm does.

Perhaps change the start on rule to

start on (stopped gdm EXIT_STATUS=[!0] and starting-dm)

But I don't know upstart particularly well, and I cannot test this on my
machine; any attempt to bring up failsafe X results in killing it.

Just FYI, I installed the xorg-edgers driver to fix this problem and it

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495092] Re: when using a live UBUNTU CD one quarter of the screen is only visible(on top-left corner)

2009-12-10 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 495092

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Thanks in advance!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495092] Re: when using a live UBUNTU CD one quarter of the screen is only visible(on top-left corner)

2009-12-10 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a
bug in xorg.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via
the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you
are having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 483857] Re: NVIDIA® GeF orce G 105M - 512MB, gives 6 screens, with nvidia d rivers version 180

2009-12-10 Thread Camilla Berglund
I have this issue on my Acer Extensa 5635G. Looking at the Xorg.0.log,
it seems that the proper mode of 1366x768 at 60Hz is being discarded
with this motivation:

Mode is rejected: This mode's horizontal sync end (1446) exceeds the
horizontal total size (1437).

After some experimentation, the fix (on my machine) was easy. Attached
is my entire xorg.conf, the important line of which is the
ModeValidation option. This disables the specific check that failed
above. See the documentation for the nVidia driver for details.

Note that I'm running driver version 190.42, but considering the nature
of the problem, this may well apply to the older version pulled in by
Jockey.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 471844] Re: X crash

2009-12-10 Thread Argyle
Today, 12/10/2009, I updated my Karmic test system to the most recent
versions of all software, including X and the kernel. During this
process, I released all holds on the jaunty version of xserver-xorg-
video-intel. I am sad to report that gdm remained in the restart loop
(despite the fact that I thought I saw a changelog indicating that this
problem was fixed). Once I broke out of the gdm service and started x
from the console, x seemed to function okay, except that I'm still
getting errors with the DRM device. These error persisted even after I
added the xswat x updates to my software sources. For my main system,
for now, I must remain with the hold, using the jaunty version of
xserver-xorg-video-intel. Please let me know if I can provide further
information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495252] [NEW] Login with GNOME or Failsafe GNOME session goes black then back to login screen

2009-12-10 Thread Ross Berteig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I allowed the most recent high priority updates to install yesterday, on
an otherwise up to date installation of Ubuntu Karmic. I didn't take
careful notes on what packages were being updated, but I do recall
mention of both the kernel (to 2.6.31-16 generic) and gdm.

After the updater completed, it wanted a reboot. After the reboot, my
GNOME sessions no longer start.

Both the normal GNOME session and the Failsafe GNOME session cause the
screen to go black, pause a second or so, then relaunch the login
screen. The xterm session does work, and from there I can see that
gnome-settings-daemon had an assertion failure. Searching for similar
bugs has not been particularly successful, although I did find Bug
#452184 quoted a similar assertion failure from an earlier version of
the gnome-settings-daemon. I'm guessing that this assertion failure is
causing a cascade of errors that result in the whole session exiting,
which gdm handles "gracefully" be putting the login screen back up.

The frustration level is pretty high, as the machine is effectively not
useful in this condition.

>From the GRUB menu, I have tried the available kernels (2.6.31-16, -15,
and -14). Of those, I got a successful login and session once on
2.6.31-14-generic, but haven't been able to repeat this since.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495253] [NEW] Failsafe mode uses Ubuntu specific branding unnecessarily

2009-12-10 Thread Twisted Lincoln, Inc.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The failsafe mode currenty greets the user with "Ubuntu is running in
low graphics mode," and offers the user options on how to proceed.
These dialogs all specifically reference "Ubuntu," rather than the
distro name noted in /etc/lsb-release.

This means that downstream distros that are based on Ubuntu have to
either create a package fork to rename them, or just live with the fact
that they are incorrect.

These messages should either display the proper distro name in /etc/lsb-
release, or simply use distro-neutral jargon like "System is running in
low graphics mode."

Re: fallback manager: fair enough.

Re: workspace switcher: If I switch back and forth manually, the
workspace switcher geometry remains the same (3x3). Only when compiz
crashes do I get the 9x1 geometry. Perhaps it is calling metacity as a
fallback manager with a different configuration somehow?

Actually, if I manually send a SIGSEGV to compiz.real, it doesn't change
the geometry. Weird. I'm out of ideas.

nVidia recently released a gold version of their v190 drivers, which I
just upgraded to. Hopefully I won't see this problem again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 487362] Re: xorg is eating up memory

2009-12-10 Thread Boerny
When plasmoid are loading data xorg memory goes up.
I use two micro blogging plasmoids. Before they do a reload of their data xorg
used about 94 mb. After they refreshed their data, xorg was using 220mb.
After some minutes top says xorg is using 362m RES mem.
xrestop
pixmaps 148544K

when the plasmoids refresh again:
top 476 RES Mem
xrestop: Pixmaps 211658K

after another refresh
top: 595 RES Mem
xrestop: Pixmaps 272511K

as the refresh rate of the plasmoids is 5min the memory is eaten up
quite fast.

But the plasmoids are not the only "programs" showing this behaviour.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 239621] Re: Screensaver disables visual effects

2009-12-10 Thread Chris Coulson
The crash handling in compiz calls the fallback window manager
(currently metacity by default), to stop it from crashing repeatedly. I
think you can change that locally in your preferences if you prefer too
though. The geometry of the workspace switcher is a window manager
specific preference, so if you launch a new window manager, then it will
use it's own preferences. If you want Compiz and Metacity to have the
same number of workspaces, you need to change their preferences.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 487362] Re: xorg is eating up memory

2009-12-10 Thread Boerny
i run xrestop on a Kubuntu with desktop effects enabled (Kubuntu 9.10
kernel 2.6.31-16-generic #53 x86_64 with nvidia 195.22) and on another
with desktop effects disabled (Kubuntu 10.04 kernel 2.6.32-7-generic #10
x86_64 with radeon xorg driver).

On both machines xorg was eating up memory. I ran xrestop on both and saw that
pixmaps uses a lot of the memory.
On machine with 9.10:
xrestop:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 239621] Re: Screensaver disables visual effects

2009-12-10 Thread wfaulk
Well, you could argue that a compiz crash shouldn't replace compiz with
metacity, unless it's crashing immediately. Also, the geometry of the
workspace switcher shouldn't change.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 239621] Re: Screensaver disables visual effects

2009-12-10 Thread Chris Coulson
It's not a screensaver bug if compiz is crashing. And the information
you've provided shows that it is probably crashing somewhere in the
NVIDIA driver, although you've not provided a full backtrace. I'll
reassign it for now though. There's generally not much anybody can do
about crashes in the proprietary NVIDIA driver anyway though

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 239621] [NEW] Screensaver disables visual effects

2009-12-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Steps to reproduce the error:

1) working normally with visual effects set to "Extra"

2) activate screensaver via lock screen gnome panel applet

3) unlock screen, entering password

4) workspace appears, but visual effects are set to "None"

The visual effects can be set to "Extra" again, no problems, just
boring...

I am using ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (desktop), updated to 2008/06/12. I
use the nvidia drivers (nvidia-glx-new 169.12+2.6.24.13-18.41).

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484020] Re: [i845G] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning

2009-12-10 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
> Can we have a discussion on how things got to this point in the first
> place? Why did Karmic ship with such a fatally flawed Intel driver? Who
> made the decision that this code was suitable for a stable release?

I don't think such a discussion would be very fruitful [*]. What could
indeed be a fruitful discussion would be one about how to avoid
shipping an LTS in April with the same stability problems. Such a
discussion should take place on the ubuntu-x mailing list
(https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-x) and not on a bug
report.

I'm not an expert on xorg, but it seems that the batchbuffer dumps we
have sent upstream so far has not triggered any response. From
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24825 it seems that what
will be needed is that somebody affected by these problems get their
hands dirty and do some git-bisecting in order to find where the
problems were introduced. Brian Rogers has already started on that bug
report, but has only come as far as finding that the problem does not
occur with kernel 2.6.30, but is there in 2.6.31-rc1 - irrespective of
intel driver version. A first step would be to make sure that this is
also the case here, and then try to identify the commit that triggers
the freeze. My impression is that this would give the upstream
developers something to work on.

[*] Here is my impression in case you find it enlightening: First, I
don't agree that the intel driver has become flawed recently. It has
improved a lot over the recent iterations (we had some freeze bugs
like this on i9xx that are now gone). The problem seems to be one
introduced in the kernel (maybe a change there triggered a
long-existing bug in the driver). Second, there seems to have been
very few people testing Ubuntu development releases on i8xx chipsets.
There was a call for testing on the ubuntu-x mailing list back in
April, with some - but not overwhelming - response. Bug reports for
freezes on 845G and 855GM only started ticking in late October, see
[1] and [2] for lists. At this time, we were already in final freeze,
and since these bugs are hard to fix, it was at the time unrealistic
to get it fixed before the release. I think that it was only well
after the release that it became clear that a lot of people had this
problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 487575] Re: xvfb depends on HAL and fails to start

2009-12-10 Thread Andrew Agno
I've seen this, and it appears to be due to having /etc/dbus-1/system.d
/xorg-server.conf from xserver-xorg-core. After uninstalling xserver-
xorg-core, things work again. Of course, if you need both xserver-xorg-
core and Xvfb, then this won't work for you--you'll probably have to
edit the dbus config.
