[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544869] Re: Suspend fails to resume on Dell 8600 / ATI video

2010-03-25 Thread Martin Spacek
After a bit more testing, I've noticed some further subtleties. When I
get a black screen (as opposed to the weird marbled one that gets
brighter and brighter) on resume from suspend, I do in fact get a mouse
cursor. What's more, the mouse switches to a text insertion "I" bar when
I hover it over the spot where the password entry box should be
displayed. Also, it doesn't seem the CPU is being loaded - no hot air
blowing out. Finally, with the black screen I can switch to another TTY.
None of this is possible when I get the weird marbled screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544741] Re: [X700] KMS, amd64: reboot or freeze while trying to launch system > preferences > appearance

2010-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
Okay the panic message shows this is a fault in the kernel drm code, so
I'll forward this to the kernel team. From your backtrace (thanks for
including a screen capture!) it seems to have to do with the drm's edid
code. EDID is data from your laptop monitor which communicates its
resolution and refresh rate capabilities, so perhaps something in how
your laptop monitor's EDID is structured is causing the kernel some
confusion.

Hi Dana, okay, radeontool might be useful in debugging this. After
installing it, you run it like this:

radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_good.txt

radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_broke.txt

Run it two times. Once when you have a good, working screen (for any
driver including -vesa), and once in the broken case (either from the
tty console or logged into the sick box remotely).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world )

2010-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Lionel, well at least turning off KMS sounds like it's working around
the issue.

Would you mind reproducing the issue, taking a photo of the screen and
attaching it? You've described the corruption quite well but sometimes
being able to see what the screen looks like provides a strong clue
about what's gone wrong.

Also, please run `apport-collect 545096` - this will attach your dmesg
and various other files useful in debugging X issues in general.

In addition to that, there is a tool called avivotool (provided in the
'radeontool' package that can be used to help get an idea of what is
going on in the gpu registers. Run it two times, once when you're
reproducing the issue (you might have to ssh into the box to do this):

avivotool regs all > regdump_broke.txt

And then again with your graphics configured to display properly (e.g.
using -vesa or nomodeset):

avivotool regs all > regdump_broke.txt

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546087] Re: Boot hangs for 20s with mouse cursor visible over startup screen

2010-03-25 Thread Robert Hooker
That's the intended behavior, your machine just boots too fast to see
the progress dots for very long. once you see a mouse cursor plymouth is
already stopped so there is no progress bar to update, the "hang" is the
rest of your desktop loading. You still see the ubuntu logo during that
time because with KMS drivers it is copying that picture over and
displaying it displayed while the rest of the desktop loads.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

When booting Lucid, the screen first stays black for a while, then I see
the startup screen with Ubuntu logo and the red dots after about 10s
from Grub. However, those dots don't change color like on shutdown and
the mouse cursor is visible (and movable) on top of it. It hangs like
that for 20+ seconds, though it should be done according to bootchart.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2010-03-25 Thread The Founder
Hi WeatherGod,

I have the proper hardware for the test (I think I'm the one that
submitted the bug in the first place) . I will do a complete format and
install the alpha version this weekend. I publish the results here.

Crossing fingers!

Best Regards,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546917] Re: fglrx fails to install in lucid

2010-03-25 Thread David Mack
May be helpful:

I recently (as in 5 minutes ago) muddled through installing fglrx on a
home-spun Karmic using the Lucid kernel. After initial installation, I
found that X was terribly broken, flickering and near unusable.

I booted a LiveCD (aka the best tool EVER) and inspected my xorg.conf.
No problems there. I traced the issue back to a blacklist in
/etc/modprobe.d. Seems radeon likes to blacklist fglrx and fglrx likes
to blacklist radeon, so I was running basically without a driver for a
short time.

I removed both blacklistings (#commented out), reinstalled fglrx driver
from the latest download from ATI (10-3), then rebooted. This time I
manually configured my xorg.conf to get rid of any reference to radeon,
and Presto!

Prior to all that miscellany, I had been getting similar errors to those
you describe. I wish I had written down all of the individual steps I
took, so that they could be repeated better, but I am new to debugging.

Cheers!
Dave

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2010-03-25 Thread WeatherGod
Roger, agreed. Besides, this is probably most likely a graphics driver
issue with regards to some of the work that is being done in the Linux
kernel (the modesetting and such). It is quite likely that it will take
the newer kernels to really address this issue anyway.

Plus, it still leaves open the possibility for backporting the fix to
Karmic and/or Jaunty.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546678] Re: [lucid] nouveau driver fails to switch virtual terminal

2010-03-25 Thread David Coles
So, I got the ASCII version of Plymouth and then GDM fired up with no
trouble. Was able to switch VTs to the console (Wooot! 1680x1050
console!) and back to X again. Thanks! :)

Switching VTs after a resume from suspend still seems a bit funny. I get
back to X fine, but then switching VTs the first time results in a black
screen (with a very brief/dark flicker of the intended screen). Flicking
between VTs once more seems to get it back working again - though this
looks like a separate bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2010-03-25 Thread The Founder
Hi WeatherGod,

Quick question, since we are so far into 9.10 with April 29, 2010 being
the launch date of 10.04 (IE: 4 weeks) ... perhaps we should look into
how it's running in the alpha / beta versions of 10.04 rather than the
current 9.10 ?

It's just that I suspect that even if it's completely solved for 9.10
tomorrow , the second 10.04 shows up, the bug will as well.

Best regards,
Roger

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395932] Re: [i855] (Needs intel 2.10) No Xv support for 82852/855GM (KMS bug)

2010-03-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, there was a set of discrete Xv fixes which went in after 2.9.0 was
cut but before the massive refactoring work for removing UMS hit. It
comprised 17 patches total, which I've unified into the patch attached
here.

$ diffstat debian/patches/102_xv-fix-8xx-video.patch
 drmmode_display.c |9
 i830.h|3
 i830_driver.c |2
 i830_video.c | 1513 +-

 i915_video.c | 33 -
 i965_video.c | 48 -
 7 files changed, 755 insertions(+), 873 deletions(-)

This is mostly confined to the i8xx code, but there are some changes to
the 9xx video code, which alter the algorithmic logic, so I can't say
with 100% certainty that the changes are going to be regression-free for
9xx, which makes me reticent to pull this in for Lucid. There is also a
lot of refactoring going on, which probably accounts for most of the
size of the patch, and unfortunately also makes it tough to review in
detail.

But... Since this backport was pretty straightforward, I've gone ahead and
packaged and set up a PPA of this here:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/white

If 8xx users can test this and say that it gives a perfect fix to Xv
support (i.e. no secondary issues), AND we can get some 9xx users to
verify it causes no regressions, then we can look at including this in
Lucid. Otherwise, 8xx users can use this ppa or

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546678] Re: [lucid] nouveau driver fails to switch virtual terminal

2010-03-25 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Argh. vga16fb strikes again! The only reason your system is booting at
all is because you seem to have 2 monitors plugged in - for some reason
vga16fb doesn't kill nouveau in that situation.

Can you try booting with the “blacklist=vga16fb” kernel option - to do
that, go to the GRUB menu (you may have to press shift early in the boot
process to access this menu), hit ‘e’ to edit the boot options, and add
“blacklist=vga16fb” to the end of the kernel line, after “quiet splash”.

That should make everything work properly again. Could you please
confirm that?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2010-03-25 Thread TM Hart
To WeatherGod:

I made an additional test on the computer described in post #94. Wanted
to see if the cd-rom w/ the ISO file for U-9.10 would run after changing
the Visual Effects menu in U-9.04, which is in use on the computer.

Booted the computer from the hard disk. Went to:

System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects.

Chose the "none" option. Rebooted the system using the U-9.10 cd-rom.
Chose the "Try Ubuntu without change to your computer" option. It
loaded and ran fine. No freeze up.

Went to the System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects menu and
changed the option from "none" to "normal". It froze within seconds.

It seems that the setting on U-9.04 carries over to the ISO test
version. If changed to "normal" the computer locks up...

This is, unfortunately, an intrinsic hazard of xorg-edgers (which is not
supported ;)).

On each kernel ABI change there will be a lag before a new
linux-backports-modules package is uploaded. It's easily worked around
by booting into the previous kernel.

If these sort of issues bother you too much, you should probably not be
using the xorg-edgers PPA :).

 duplicate 533135

This appears to be a plymouth bug. I'm marking this bug as a duplicate
of the original plymouth bug.

Another work around, other than to boot with only one monitor plugged
in, is to use SysRq+Alt+K to kill everything when it's hung at the end.
GDM should then come up correctly.

2010-03-25 Thread TM Hart
To WeatherGod

An additional comment on post #94:

I booted the computer - which is described in #94 and uses U-9.04.
Made a change to the Visual Effects menu.

Went to System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects and selected
"none".

Then booted the system using the CD-ROM w/ the U-9.10 ISO file.
Selected "Try Ubuntu Without Change to Your Computer' and the demo ran
fine. No system freeze this time.

Went to the Visual Effects menu and selected "normal" and the system
froze w/ in a few seconds.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 548362] [NEW] Cannot install nvidia 195.36.15 - crashes system

2010-03-25 Thread doctordruidphd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-current

I cannot install the NVIDIA 195.36.15 driver. If I try to install the driver
downloaded from the NVIDIA website, first screen about building the module
proceeds normally. When the "Install 32-bit opengl drivers" screen appears, the
whole system crashes, and requires a power down with the power switch to
recover (no response to CTRL-ALT-DEL or ALT-SYSRQ-REISUB).
If I try to install the nvidia-current package, the installation appears to
work properly, but on reboot, the system freezes during bootup, before the
login screen appears, and requires a hard power down to recover. Note that the
190.53 driver, and all previous drivers, downloaded from the website install
and function properly.

OS: kubuntu-10.04-current updates, kernel 2.6.32-17 (problem exists on
all 2.6.32 versions)

green...@wolfenstein:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04

I have tried:

Booting and installing with and without nomodeset option (190 driver from
website requires nomodeset option to function)
Removing all traces of previous drivers, and nouveau.
Manually removing nvidia.ko from /lib/modules/2.6.32-17/kernel/drivers/video
The nvidia-installer-log file exists, but is empty after a failed 195 install
(crashes before cache flushes)
Contacting NVIDIA - they say to contact the distribution-specific packagers (so
here I am)
Modifying, removing, and reinstalling with nvidia-xconfig the xorg.conf file
Installing from the console with 'sudo service kdm stop'

Yes!!
It finally works! I've updated just few minutes ago and the update of
linux-backports-modules-nouveau from xorg-edgers PPA fixed it. Everyihing
works, an resolution is set right. Will it be incuded in official ubuntu
packages till final release? Here is dmesg and xorg.0.log in case that you want
to check it out.

2010-03-25 Thread novakov
I've just reported a duplicate error after upgrading to Lucid. After
restarting the system a message popped asking me to chose among couple
of options to boot (start in low-graphic mode, restart x, reconfigure,
etc...). I picked "start in low-graph mode" and when the os was loaded
the same error occurred in the upper right angle in the tray. When I
clicked it, it was about to report the error again, so I interrupted it.
Then I started system-appearance-visual effects and chose "extra". Then
as again the driver was downloaded and installed. After restart all was
working fine and the Nvidia driver was installed and fully available.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 547187] [NEW] Small graphics performance

2010-03-25 Thread pijanyadmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a radeon 9550 graphics card. Ubuntu 10.04

glxgears
295 frames in 5.0 seconds = 58.814 FPS
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.588 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.002 FPS
294 frames in 5.0 seconds = 58.664 FPS

Work such as Blender is impossible.

I installed the drivers from the repository:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu lucid main

In ubuntu 9.10 worked. The 10.04 is not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 322921] Re: At startup, can't drag windows between dual monitors

2010-03-25 Thread David Tombs
Francis, you cannot be sure this is /exactly/ the same bug, as different
underlying issues can cause identical symptoms, especially when dealing
with X. However, I will reopen this issue for now, and assign it to
xorg. (It is very unlikely that this is an issue with gnome-display-
properties.)

Anyone experiencing the issue, please execute the following command in a
terminal:

apport-collect 322921

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance.

** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 539350] Re: X does not behave properly with the -16 kernel in Lucid

2010-03-25 Thread DouglasAWh
upgraded vesa driver in Lucid today and this is still a problem. Am I
the only one experiencing this? It seems as though it should be pretty
reproducible since I'm getting it on multiple sets of hardware.

Is there anything else that is needed? I gave the lspci -vvnn info
(http://pastebin.org/115539) on the 16th and haven't heard anything
back. Having to install a mainline kernel is a pretty ridiculous
workaround for an average user. The ATI proprietary drivers for this
hardware do not support the version of X in Lucid, so that's an even
worse workaround.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 322921] [NEW] At startup, can't drag windows between dual monitors

2010-03-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu 8.10, Gnome 2.24.1, 2.6.27-11-generic, 64-bit.

I have a Lenovo T61 laptop with a 1680x1050 LCD screen and Intel X3100
graphics adapter. I have an external DVI monitor plugged in via a
docking station, also running at 1680x1050. My system is configured to
use these two monitors simultaneously in a dual-head configuration, and
I set this up entirely using the "Preferences -> Screen Resolution"
tool.

My problem is that when I boot, I can't drag windows from the external
monitor (on the left) to the laptop's LCD (on the right). I can drag
them partially onto the laptop screen, but they seem to hit some kind of
barrier which prevents me from dragging them all the way onto the
screen.

I can "fix" this issue by going into "Preferences -> Screen Resolution",
and dragging the external monitor so that it is on the right of the LCD,
then clicking apply. Once this takes effect, I drag the external
monitor back so that it is on the left of the LCD, then click apply
again. After that everything works fine until I reboot again.

I've attached the output of "xrandr". It is exactly the same before and
after I do the monitor-position shuffle to fix my issue.

Is there any other information (config files, log files) I can provide
to make this an easier issue to track down?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538691] Re: no versioned library symlinks provided for libGL

2010-03-25 Thread Scott Ritchie
The symlinks are identical to those found in /usr/lib for the native GL
library though. This isn't an ia32-libs request, it's a mesa one

** Package changed: ia32-libs (Ubuntu) => mesa (Ubuntu)
