[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544869] Re: Suspend fails to resume on Dell 8600 / ATI video
After a bit more testing, I've noticed some further subtleties. When I get a black screen (as opposed to the weird marbled one that gets brighter and brighter) on resume from suspend, I do in fact get a mouse cursor. What's more, the mouse switches to a text insertion "I" bar when I hover it over the spot where the password entry box should be displayed. Also, it doesn't seem the CPU is being loaded - no hot air blowing out. Finally, with the black screen I can switch to another TTY. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544741] Re: [X700] KMS, amd64: reboot or freeze while trying to launch system > preferences > appearance
Okay the panic message shows this is a fault in the kernel drm code, so I'll forward this to the kernel team. From your backtrace (thanks for including a screen capture!) it seems to have to do with the drm's edid code. EDID is data from your laptop monitor which communicates its resolution and refresh rate capabilities, so perhaps something in how your laptop monitor's EDID is structured is causing the kernel some confusion. ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => New ** Summary changed: - [X700] KMS, amd64: reboot or freeze while trying to launch system > preferences > appearance + [X700] KMS, amd64: Kernel panic while trying to launch system > preferences > appearance ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Milestone: None => ubuntu-10.04-beta-2 ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu Lucid) Importance: High Status: New -- [X700] KMS, amd64: Kernel panic while trying to launch system > preferences > appearance https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544741 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Hi Lionel, well at least turning off KMS sounds like it's working around the issue. Would you mind reproducing the issue, taking a photo of the screen and attaching it? You've described the corruption quite well but sometimes being able to see what the screen looks like provides a strong clue about what's gone wrong. Also, please run `apport-collect 545096` - this will attach your dmesg and various other files useful in debugging X issues in general. In addition to that, there is a tool called avivotool (provided in the 'radeontool' package that can be used to help get an idea of what is going on in the gpu registers. Run it two times, once when you're reproducing the issue (you might have to ssh into the box to do this): avivotool regs all > regdump_broke.txt And then again with your graphics configured to display properly (e.g. using -vesa or nomodeset): avivotool regs all > regdump_broke.txt ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world ) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545096 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546087] Re: Boot hangs for 20s with mouse cursor visible over startup screen
That's the intended behavior, your machine just boots too fast to see the progress dots for very long. once you see a mouse cursor plymouth is already stopped so there is no progress bar to update, the "hang" is the rest of your desktop loading. You still see the ubuntu logo during that time because with KMS drivers it is copying that picture over and displaying it displayed while the rest of the desktop loads. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg When booting Lucid, the screen first stays black for a while, then I see the startup screen with Ubuntu logo and the red dots after about 10s from Grub. However, those dots don't change color like on shutdown and the mouse cursor is visible (and movable) on top of it. It hangs like that for 20+ seconds, though it should be done according to bootchart. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546917] Re: fglrx fails to install in lucid
May be helpful: I recently (as in 5 minutes ago) muddled through installing fglrx on a home-spun Karmic using the Lucid kernel. After initial installation, I found that X was terribly broken, flickering and near unusable. I booted a LiveCD (aka the best tool EVER) and inspected my xorg.conf. No problems there. I traced the issue back to a blacklist in /etc/modprobe.d. Seems radeon likes to blacklist fglrx and fglrx likes to blacklist radeon, so I was running basically without a driver for a short time. I removed both blacklistings (#commented out), reinstalled fglrx driver from the latest download from ATI (10-3), then rebooted. This time I manually configured my xorg.conf to get rid of any reference to radeon, and Presto! Prior to all that miscellany, I had been getting similar errors to those you describe. I wish I had written down all of the individual steps I took, so that they could be repeated better, but I am new to debugging. Cheers! Roger, agreed. Besides, this is probably most likely a graphics driver issue with regards to some of the work that is being done in the Linux kernel (the modesetting and such). It is quite likely that it will take the newer kernels to really address this issue anyway. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546678] Re: [lucid] nouveau driver fails to switch virtual terminal
So, I got the ASCII version of Plymouth and then GDM fired up with no trouble. Was able to switch VTs to the console (Wooot! 1680x1050 console!) and back to X again. Thanks! :) Switching VTs after a resume from suspend still seems a bit funny. Hi WeatherGod, Quick question, since we are so far into 9.10 with April 29, 2010 being the launch date of 10.04 (IE: 4 weeks) ... perhaps we should look into how it's running in the alpha / beta versions of 10.04 rather than the current 9.10 ? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395932] Re: [i855] (Needs intel 2.10) No Xv support for 82852/855GM (KMS bug)
Well, there was a set of discrete Xv fixes which went in after 2.9.0 was cut but before the massive refactoring work for removing UMS hit. It comprised 17 patches total, which I've unified into the patch attached here. $ diffstat debian/patches/102_xv-fix-8xx-video.patch drmmode_display.c |9 i830.h|3 i830_driver.c |2 i830_video.c | 1513 +- i830_video.h | 20 i915_video.c | 33 - i965_video.c | 48 - 7 files changed, 755 insertions(+), 873 deletions(-) This is mostly confined to the i8xx code, but there are some changes to the 9xx video code, which alter the algorithmic logic, so I can't say with 100% certainty that the changes are going to be regression-free for 9xx, which makes me reticent to pull this in for Lucid. There is also a lot of refactoring going on, which probably accounts for most of the size of the patch, and unfortunately also makes it tough to review in detail. But... Since this backport was pretty straightforward, I've gone ahead and packaged and set up a PPA of this here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/white If 8xx users can test this and say that it gives a perfect fix to Xv support (i.e. no secondary issues), AND we can get some 9xx users to verify it causes no regressions, then we can look at including this in Lucid. Argh. vga16fb strikes again! The only reason your system is booting at all is because you seem to have 2 monitors plugged in - for some reason vga16fb doesn't kill nouveau in that situation. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nvidia-current I cannot install the NVIDIA 195.36.15 driver. I've just reported a duplicate error after upgrading to Lucid. After restarting the system a message popped asking me to chose among couple of options to boot (start in low-graphic mode, restart x, reconfigure, etc...). I picked "start in low-graph mode" and when the os was loaded the same error occurred in the upper right angle in the tray. When I clicked it, it was about to report the error again, so I interrupted it. Then I started system-appearance-visual effects and chose "extra". Then as again the driver was downloaded and installed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 322921] Re: At startup, can't drag windows between dual monitors
Francis, you cannot be sure this is /exactly/ the same bug, as different underlying issues can cause identical symptoms, especially when dealing with X. However, I will reopen this issue for now, and assign it to xorg. (It is very unlikely that this is an issue with gnome-display- properties.) Anyone experiencing the issue, please execute the following command in a terminal: apport-collect 322921 This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance. ** Package changed: ubuntu => xorg (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => Incomplete -- At startup, can't drag windows between dual monitors https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/322921 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

upgraded vesa driver in Lucid today and this is still a problem. Am I the only one experiencing this? It seems as though it should be pretty reproducible since I'm getting it on multiple sets of hardware. Is there anything else that is needed? I gave the lspci -vvnn info (http://pastebin.org/115539) on the 16th and haven't heard anything back. Having to install a mainline kernel is a pretty ridiculous workaround for an average user. The ATI proprietary drivers for this hardware do not support the version of X in Lucid, so that's an even worse workaround. -- X does not behave properly with the -16 kernel in Lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539350 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 322921] [NEW] At startup, can't drag windows between dual monitors
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Ubuntu 8.10, Gnome 2.24.1, 2.6.27-11-generic, 64-bit. I have a Lenovo T61 laptop with a 1680x1050 LCD screen and Intel X3100 graphics adapter. I have an external DVI monitor plugged in via a docking station, also running at 1680x1050. My system is configured to use these two monitors simultaneously in a dual-head configuration, and I set this up entirely using the "Preferences -> Screen Resolution" tool. My problem is that when I boot, I can't drag windows from the external monitor (on the left) to the laptop's LCD (on the right). I can drag them partially onto the laptop screen, but they seem to hit some kind of barrier which prevents me from dragging them all the way onto the screen. I can "fix" this issue by going into "Preferences -> Screen Resolution", and dragging the external monitor so that it is on the right of the LCD, then clicking apply. Once this takes effect, I drag the external monitor back so that it is on the left of the LCD, then click apply again. After that everything works fine until I reboot again. I've attached the output of "xrandr". It is exactly the same before and after I do the monitor-position shuffle to fix my issue. Is there any other information (config files, log files) I can provide to make this an easier issue to track down? ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Incomplete ** Tags: dual monitor screen -- At startup, can't drag windows between dual monitors https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/322921 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
