[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 528026] Re: Often freezes before GDM login screen appears

2010-04-05 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hrm. Intel drm is annoyingly terse during startup. I'll need to look
at the various drm.debug options in order to find out how to make it say
what it thinks it's doing.

Bug #535640 has been fixed, however. Do you still get the intermittent
freezes after suspend with the 2.6.32-19 kernel?

That would mean you were using nvidia-settings to change the screen
resolution. Is this correct?

If so, you need to run nvidia-settings as root in order to save the
changes you make. Does running “gksudo nvidia-settings” allow you to
save the X configuration file?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 496653] Re: [KMS][RV530] compiz very slow on AGP hardware

2010-04-05 Thread Tpugliese
I see this problem as well, but not 100% of the time. It seems that I
can get usable 3D performance with KMS if I reboot with
radeon.modeset=0, select "Normal" for Visual Effects, then reboot again
with radeon.modeset=1. It's still not great compared to when KMS is
disabled but much better than if I boot with KMS enabled then start
compiz after logging in.

I have been able to use this workaround twice now after running in the
slow desktop problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532727] Re: massive flickering of everything but background and netbook-launcher menu

Can you try a more up to date livecd to see if this is still an issue?

you had an issue with the powersave parameter for i915 but this should
be fixed by now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 555151] Re: Scrolling applet out of view kills X11 with signal 11

2010-04-05 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Would you be able to test this with at 10.04 Beta 1 (or Beta 2, coming

Lucid, so this may well already be resolved.

If you *can* reproduce this on the livecd, could you please make X crash

interesting logs to this bug? Thanks.

2010-04-05 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
It looks like the Intel graphics driver is failing to load properly due
to an AGP issue, which would be why adding i915.modeset=0 has no effect.
This is bug #542251.

I suspect that vga16fb might be messing the mode up. Does booting with
“blacklist=vga16fb” work any better?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 490946] Re: [i945gme] Xorg hardware-specific on Delll Mini 9 Inspiron 910 : playback choppy with H264

2010-04-05 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Isn't the problem here simply that the Atom N270 CPU in these netbooks
is insufficiently powerful to decode a 1280x720 h264 video stream in
realtime? There isn't any GPU video decoding acceleration available at
this point, and decoding that clip takes a full core of my
(substantially more powerful) Core 2 processor.

You can take video display entirely out of the equation by trying the
pipeline:

“gst-launch filesrc location=/path/to/file ! decodebin ! fakesink
sync=true”

If that can't keep up, then it's just your CPU being too slow; netbook
processors generally need GPU video decoding offloading to play decent-
sized videos at an acceptable speed, and h264 is a processor-intensive
video codec.

The xorg.conf file was created by the aticonfig --init command. The
catalyst application is unable to set a virtual resolution and keeps
hanging up. Overall the the functionality of the application is
somewhere around 70% working on this machine.

If you want to close this bug I am fine with that. I can open up
specific bug reports about the specific problems in the catalyst
application.

The main problem being that I need to run it as root and have to reboot
in order for changes to take effect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553401] Re: typo in some symbol files in xkb-data

2010-04-05 Thread K. Sethu
I started experiencing this bug in Lucid -Beta 1 (most likely after a
large number of updates on 31-03-2010 from the repos were taken in)
whenever I tried to add any of the Tamil and Sinhala keymaps. The Tamil
keymaps are under symbols file "in" with couple of them cross listed in
"lk" and the Sinhala keymap is in "lk".

The "include" lines in these from which trailing semicolons have to be
removed (as can be found with the grep statement given in bug
description) are :

/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/lk:  include "nbsp(zwnj2nb3s)";
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/in:  include "nbsp(zwnj3zwj4)";
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/in:  include "nbsp(zwnj3zwj4)";

I confirm that the removal of the trailing semicolons in the above three
solves the issue for the Tamil and Sinhala keymaps.

I hope this bugfixing gets into updates quickly since there are users
(atleast among Tamil users I know of) who exclusively depend on xkb-
extension keymaps for non-english typography.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 548710] Re: External Monitor does not display when X is running

2010-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Timuckun,

I notice that you have an xorg.conf which is setting the virtual
resolution, and your Xorg.0.log indicates it's discarding a lot of
possible resolutions because it's unable to fit them in. Please try
moving your /etc/X11/xorg.conf aside, which should resolve the issue.

Since it sounds like this is a user configuration issue needing
technical support rather than a true defect report, I will move this
over to the support tracker.

I tried the different installs, and I get the same thing regardless. It
works for anything from a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes.
Then the mouse buttons stop working and a few seconds later machine just
stops dead and won't accept any input from anything forcing me to do a
hard reboot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 548709] Re: [R423] gamma bug, display too bright when using VGA

2010-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Madko, read more carefully, I didn't say this was a cosmetic issue.
There are other issues where X refuses to even start up, or
crashes/locksup during use, and have no obvious way to work around it;
those are serious issues. This is just a regular severity X bug.
However given the number of people seeing similar issues, most of whom
are using DVI-VGA adapters, that ups the priority on this a bit.

Thanks, if the issue is resolved with an updated kernel, then that
suggests this was a bug in the drm that can be fixed with a kernel
patch, so retargeting to the kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 508699] Re: [K8M800] Xorg freeze / Kernel 2.6.32-10-generic freeze

2010-04-05 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Quite difficult, because I do not have ways to debug from an other system and
at the moment the system crashes my debugger crashes too :(
But as far as I advanced Windows loads, VGA graphics are initialized, User logs
on, then further graphics initializations are performed. Part of this is
installing an IRQ handler for the graphics adapter. Finally graphics resolution
is set to what the user adjusted it and then IRQs are enabled again.

Booting Linux from power off state loads the kernel and initdisk, Then
control is transfered to the kernel. There is *no* IRQ handler
installed. Calling X11 then enables the IRQ for the graphics adapter. As
soon as one IRQ is generated, the whole system freezes, because the IRQ
handler points to useless code.

If I've booted Windows (or systemrescuecd) before, the handler,
installed and initialized, handles the IRQ, as it did with Windows (or
systemrescuecd) running. Since both handlers do not call any other code
they work as expected even if the system changes.

I could not find any way to deactivate IRQ allocation for the graphics
adapter. But enabling memory testing wiped the installed handler. With
memory testing enabled it wasn't possible to boot Ubuntu 10.04 beta! The
system froze as soon as it tried to access graphics, generating an IRQ.

With an Vanilla kernel right from kernel.org I could make the whole
thing work too. Leading to conclusion that some patch from Ubuntu must
have side effects removing the IRQ handler install for the graphics
adapter.

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

With Nouveau enabled and subpixel font hinting enabled, fonts are
rendered "glitchily". See the attached screenshot.

Switching to "Best Contrast" or "Best Shapes" rendering solves the
problem (I'm using the GNOME Appearance Preferences dialog to make the
  changes.)

All levels of subpixel hinting (none, slight, medium and full) exhibit
this behavior. Enabling or disabling desktop effects has no effect. I've
tested this using up-to-date Lucid and with xorg-edgers, and both are
  affected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553784] Re: Radeon X1300 AGP: 3D performance much slower after upgrade to Lucid

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

First off, let me say that 2D performance is much better overall after
upgrading from Karmic to Lucid. User switching is especially fast and
much improved. 3D performance is really bad though. If I enable
"Normal" visual effects, the UI becomes unresponsive when moving windows
or doing anything 3D related. When I attempt to move a window, the UI
will freeze for 1-2 seconds at a time, update for a moment then freeze
again. Any animations from compiz results in the same behavior which
makes visual effects or any 3D applications unusable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 555298] Re: [Lucid] black screen when switching users

2010-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Alwin Garside,
radeontool can be used to assist in debugging this issue. To install it from
the command line, use this command:

sudo apt-get install radeontool

After installing it, you run it like this:

sudo radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_good.txt
sudo radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_broke.txt

Run it two times. Once when you have a working screen (for any driver),
and once in the broken case (either from the tty console or logged into
the sick box remotely). Attach both of those to this bug report, and we
can then forward this issue upstream. Thanks ahead of time!

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

When switching users in Lucid, often X will freeze up and just give me a
black screen with blinking cursor. When I try to go to the current
session with Ctrl+Alt+F7,8,9,etc. I either get black, distorted or a
  non-responsive unlock screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301958] Re: [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards

2010-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Or I should say, not considering unless it's done by debian. Basically
we want to try to stay close to Debian with this driver; if we are going
to carry any patches over debian they need to be short and easy to
review (and probably sent upstream to debian).

To reiterate Timo's comment #60, we need someone to isolate the specific
patches that resolve the issue. Pulling in mandrake's forked version is
not an option we're considering.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but neither gsynaptics nor mouse preferences work

2010-04-05 Thread Topher
Thanks for the tip Mary. I installed the patch. No luck! No touchpad tab
in mouse prefs, no synaptics driver installed. Perhaps our hardware is a
little different. Either way, I hope this bug isn't going to be as
thorny as it looks... I'm resorting to a piece of cardboard taped over
the touchpad just to type now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363238] Re: [RV100] very poor Xorg performance on various older graphics HW - XAA no longer works

a follow up: DRI was disabled because of not enough memory available. I
increased the video memory and things got worse. Both XAA and EXA gave
corrupted output.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554783] Re: Graphics Card Fan Suddenly Stopped While Using Computer

2010-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Fwiw, with my card I saw this set of symptoms happen intermittently for
a few months, with increasing frequency over time. With several
reboots, blowing canned air on it, etc. I could get the gpu fan to come
on and work properly. But eventually it just stopped entirely and
swapping out the card was the only option. I'd used the card pretty
heavily for several years so it wasn't a surprise that the fan would die
eventually. Pity though; aside from the fan that card had worked really
well for me.

Anyway, again please follow up on the upstream bug report on this issue.
I'm curious if your issue was indeed a hardware issue like mine or if
there is something more to be concerned with in the software code.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554783] Re: Graphics Card Fan Suddenly Stopped While Using Computer

2010-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
My initial guess would be a hardware problem (I had almost identical
symptoms on a 5xx card a few months ago, that went away once I swapped
it out with a new card), but just in case it isn't, I can send the bug
report upstream first and see what they say.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363238] Re: [RV100] very poor Xorg performance on various older graphics HW - XAA no longer works

2010-04-05 Thread arbeitstier
Hi all,
I just went through all the posts here but I experience another problem:
with XAA I get seriously corrupted graphics in some applications. Especially in
adobe acrobat the scrollbars are just garbage and the pop up messages from the
network manager are just random dots.
With EXA the rendering is fine but performance is poor as mentioned here in the
forum.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549658] Re: Available Resolution incorrectly listed

2010-04-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
This sounds like a modesetting problem so reassigning to linux since the
kernel does modesetting in this case.

As a workaround you could try booting with UMS. See
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting for directions on configuring
that.
