[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494699] Re: Does not support current Lucid kernel (2.6.32) or xserver (1.7)
I guess I might be looking at things a little to simple, just because I know the landscape of graphics card driver issues on Linux and can make an informed choice doesn't mean that someone new to Linux does. However, someone new to Linux shouldn't be installing an alpha or beta release of a Linux OS. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560911] Re: Switch user -> Log out -> Black display until reboot
I have this problem, too. All I can think of adding is that it only happens when you are trying to return to the first user that logged in, and it doesn't matter which user it is. I've set identical permissions to two users, and have done the following: Log into userA; switch to userB; wait on B; log out userB; blank screen. I repeated that swapping the users, and got the same result. Log into userB; switch to userA; switch back to userB right away (this works fine); wait on B; log out user B; I get to the user login screen as per normal function. This means I cannot just log in and then walk away leaving stuff unfinished, because my other user could log in for a few minutes, and then I'd be left with an unusable session :( If it's any use to have more logs or other files posted, I'd be glad to do so. -- Switch user -> Log out -> Black display until reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/560911 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494699] Re: Does not support current Lucid kernel (2.6.32) or xserver (1.7)
If nvidia are so much better than ATI then where is the kernel-mode- setting support in their driver. Its a small thing but on my laptop using the nvidia driver the bootup (however brief) looks the crap compared to the open source ATI driver on my desktop machine. ATI seem interested in making the open source driver work. They are providing hardware specs and the development of the open-source ATI driver has been improving in leaps and bounds IMHO. I have desktop effects working beautifully, the plymouth startup on lucid looks so much better using the open source ATI drivers than it does using the closed nvidia ones. I think the open source drivers are definitely a much better solution and for now the quickest way to absolutely kick-ass drivers designed properly by the open-source community who know the Linux kernel and drivers a lot better than a hardware manufacturer. The fact that the closed ATI drivers are sub-standard makes me believe even more in the open-source drivers. Let the hardware people make the hardware and the software people make the software. ATI obviously aren't that good at making Linux drivers so it makes a lot of sense for ATI to open the hardware specs and let Linux drivers experts create the drivers. So for that reason I'm sticking with ATI for the time being and waiting to see what the near future holds, but my experience with open source and Linux thus far tells me that I would rather use open-source that put up with buggy closed software/drivers. -- Does not support current Lucid kernel (2.6.32) or xserver (1.7) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/494699 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] [NEW] Backlight brightness on ThinkPad T510 can only be changed in Text Mode, not X
Public bug reported: The brightness controls on this laptop with NVS 3100m work while running Nouveau or when using a text mode VT, but not while running X and using proprietary NVIDIA drivers. About 3 weeks ago it was possible to force the nvidia driver to control the backlight by adding [Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"] to the "Devices" section of xorg.conf . While this allowed the backlight to be controlled, the increments were inconsistent and resulted in a buzzing noise from the LED backlight. Since this did not occur while running nouveau or when switching in text VT, something was wrong. However, adding this option to xorg.conf no longer works. I believe this is some type of regression. The ideal solution would be to apply the backlight control method used by text VTs to X, because it would work around this regression AND prevent the possibly hardware-damaging electrical issues caused by the proprietary nvidia driver's forced backlight controls (which are not enabled by default). This bad backlight behaviour has been confirmed on ThinkPad models T510 and W510 via http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T510 , and I mentioned it to a developer on the nvnews.net forums. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560122] Re: lucid beta2: impossible to install on notebook K50IN
There seem to be two or three bugs here - one is that the nouveau kernel module is trying to initialise your hardware, and fails. In a pleasant change of pace, it fails in such a way that the nouveau X driver doesn't try to work, so X then tries the other drivers we've listed as possible drivers for your hardware. Then, the possible second bug - rather than trying the -nv driver, X tries the vesa driver. Then, the the third bug - the vesa driver either doesn't know how to drive your display or doesn't know how to recover from whatever the nouveau kernel module has done. Since you can get to a terminal there are some things that you can try: 1) To see whether it's the fault of the nouveau module corrupting the GPU state, could you please boot the livecd, adding “nouveau.fakeparam=yes” to the kernel command line (near the “quiet splash” part is fine). That will cause the nouveau module to fail to load. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494699] Re: Does not support current Lucid kernel (2.6.32) or xserver (1.7)
Hey Rafal. It's great to hear that you don't have problems with Ati graphics. But a lot of users really do. Especially new Linux users. Other more advanced users have struggled like hell, tried everything, and they still ended up blank. Thats a fact, and there's no stereotyping in that. Surfing the net, you will find hundreds of pages describing those problems. Some of them new, and others as old as Ubuntu it selves. A lot of users with those problems turn to pages like this to find solutions, but the way things in here is described will only make them more confused (No disrespect to anyone). Its sad to see new users (not using Nvidia) drop Ubuntu like a pair of soiled trousers, because they can't find solutions anywhere. Especially if other people have the answers. The hole idea in Ubuntu is sharing, and its actually really disappointing when users with Ati problems look for solutions, all they find is page after page with the exact same problems they have themselves, but no answers on how to fix it. If they are lucky to come across a page with solutions, it still does not help them, because its so badly described that only a total hardcore Linux wizard maybe is able to get something out of it. Considering that you got yours working, maybe you could be the one to change all that? If you could write a detailed step by step instruction on how to make it work, that new users could easily follow, and put it on this page (and perhaps on some other pages too), a lot of people could really benefit from it. As I told in my first commend I have been using Nvidia all the time, except on the old Acer Laptop which is running fine with 8,04. I have never had to struggle with drivers, and therefore I have no solutions to pass on to others, except if they have an old Ati card to try out 8,04 or switch to Nvidia. But there is one thing I can do: Speak up, and write about the problem (like in my first commend) on all the pages like this that I come across. I could of course say: I got my a.. covered by using Nvidia, so I don't care. But the thing is that I do care. I really like Ubuntu, and I want to see it grow. So I'm gonna continue writing till someone like you for instance who has the knowledge, write one or more really great instructions, and make them as visible on the net as possible. Kinda hope for Jackpot this time. By the way, I'm not saying that Ati is junk. I actually think Ati kicks butt. Especially in Windows (pardon the nasty word). Its just a shame that so many Linux users have such a struggle with them. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556253] Re: [2.6.32-19 regression] Does not check lid status any more, external screen powered off
It's possible that the Intel driver could use the same trick the Nouveau module does. Nouveau also had lid-detect quirks, which they removed, and now the driver reports LVDS as “unknown” if the lid is detected as down. If there are no other outputs detected, the “unknown” status causes nouveau to try to bring up the LVDS anyway, and if there are other outputs connected the LVDS remains unactivated. This seems like a better behaviour to me. That still leaves the DVI powering off problem, though. -- [2.6.32-19 regression] Does not check lid status any more, external screen powered off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/556253 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561301] Re: [RV690] flicker on startup, dead black screen after some time with lucid
nomodeset kernel option does nothing (at least on my kernel build), but radeon.modeset=0 does help. Worked an evening on the box with disabled modesetting now and didn't see a freeze/crash. Only the mode detection is suboptimal... I have seen that in comparison to another Linux system I have on that box.. the image looked more crisp, less smearing on the LCD (that also covers the mode set using kernel modesetting). After manually fixing ip some tuned mode with slightly increased refresh rate (not 59.9 but rather 61 Hz or so) this is improved. The main "problem" here is that fglrx doesn't want to install on a kernel newer than 2.6.32. However we can't expect the Ubuntu devs to support other kernels than the ones shipping with Ubuntu. I would suggest you to file bugreports with the problems you have using fglrx on the official 2.6.32-kernel so these can be addressed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560570] Re: fglrx fails to identify attached monitor, displays blank screen
The log file just stops half way through the driver initialization. There's no backtrace. There are two possibilities: 1. the Xserver is still spinning at 100% CPU load in the background 2. the system crashed hard and didn't have a chance to write the complete log file to the disk You could try updating to the latest driver that was published on Saturday. That may fix your problem. -- fglrx fails to identify attached monitor, displays blank screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/560570 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560570] Re: fglrx fails to identify attached monitor, displays blank screen
Hello Felix, I'm enclosing the correct version of the log files, along with the xorg.conf file generated by aticonfig. There is a slight change of behaviour since updating gdm; now rather than stalling on a blank screen, X now stalls on the ubuntu 10.04 splash (screen white lettering on top of orange dots). I guess this is not rendered through fglrx, but please correct me if I'm wrong. As far as I can interpret the log files, I cannot see anything conspicuous apart from the driver mentioning that there is no device section for the pci dev at 1:00:1. This is the HDMI audio dev embedded in the card, as far as I can gather from the lspci output (also enclosed). The aticonfig --query-monitor output remains the same (not that it should change, I pressume) Hope this helps, and thanks a lot Manuel ** Attachment added: "Log files and Xorg.conf when running X with fglrx" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/43961837/logs_and_conf_with_fglrx.tar.gz -- fglrx fails to identify attached monitor, displays blank screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/560570 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561802] [NEW] [lucid] [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg During installation, bootup (plymouth) and while inside X, screen remains blank. Switching VTs yields no results (screen remains blank). This was done with today's daily desktop image, amd64: 10.04 (20100412). I've been able to isolate the issue to possibly somewhere in modesetting with the i915 driver, here are the tested cases: - Disabling modesetting with 'nomodeset' as a kernel parameter: boot messages visible in 'verbose', otherwise nothing on screen, X remains blank. - Disabling modesetting with 'i915.modeset=0' as a kernel parameter: results in a kernel oops, after briefly showing a simple "text" splash and showing corruption of that splash screen. X clearly never comes up, caps/scroll/num blink. - Disabling modesetting with 'nomodeset' and switching X drivers to 'vesa': nothing on screen during boot, up to a working, visible desktop.
